Sam Spina's 2015 Portfolio Team Leader Orange Team/ Halloweenies
Self-Analytical Evaluation During this semester, I have taken on more responsibilities and challenges than in past years. This
year I am a team leader and I’m not going to lie it has kicked my butt a little bit. Designing pages is so much harder than I had at first thought them to be. Last year Madison Schwab made it seem like a piece of cake, but it is the exact opposite. I literally spend so much time in the yearbook room and I have no clue how I am behind. What am I doing wrong? I feel like I just need to prepare a lot earlier in advance, even though I tried to. This year my team is the orange team, aka the Halloweenies. We forgot to take a picture on Halloween and I have to say I’m kind of sad about it, but anyway… I have to say working with my team can be a struggle at times. I know all the members of my team and we are all in the same grade so I have little authority over them. They do not always take me seriously and I try to be somewhat strict, but they still don’t do what I ask them to do all the time. Ok, I’ll give you an example, I asked them to write a caption for a picture that had two girls reading the newspaper and I left them to work on it and about half an hour later I went back to see their progress and there was none. They told me that they could not write a caption for it because they didn’t know the names of the people or have a quote from them. I just about lost it. They were lik we can’t just write these two girls are reading the newspaper and I was like no you can’t. You have to find the names of the girls and elaborate on what they are doing because they’re not just reading the newspaper. They ended up not writing the caption. Or another time when I asked them on deadline night to write a caption for these two pictures of JV Football and they literally never did it. They wrote a caption, that wasn’t even good, for a picture that I was never using. Julia Diede ended up helping me write the captions and thank goodness because what they gave me was trash. Let’s just talk about my team’s work ethics now. They all get their stuff done, but is it good? I would classify my team’s work as mediocre. Some of the work is very good and I’m super proud of them, but other times I just want to fall on the floor and stay there for months. I have tried to show them how to write proper captions, but it is just not clicking for them. My leadership skills can be improved slightly. I feel that since I know each of my members so well, I don’t want to be rude or mean to them and I see how some other team leaders treat their team and I would never want to treat them like that, but I do need to become a little more strict with them. They need to understand that when we are in yearbook, I am not their peer, but their superior. I also need to set a better example as a leader. Leaders do their best and set an example for those who follow them, and next semester, my team is going to look to me like I am a goddess. Ok, maybe not that far, but I am going to set a better example for my team by getting my work done on time and asking if they need help more frequently than I did this first semester. During this semester, I have expanded my knowledge in almost every aspect of yearbook. My Indesign skills were poor in the beginning of the year. I had trouble even moving photos around on the pages. Now I am able to design pages the way I want to. I still have things that I do not understand or know how to do, but I either figure it out or ask for assistance from my peers. During this project, I have learned more about photoshop than I knew before. Both Sam and Kim have helped me with my portfolio. I had the least experience with Photoshop and I felt like I needed to learn how to use it at some point either this year or next year. Designing my portfolio was a struggle in the beginning because I had no idea what my theme was going to be or how to design any of it. Photoshop has literally saved my life. I learned some of the basics while making this project and I can and will absolutely use these while I design my yearbook spread. Deadlines have to be one of the most stressful things I have ever endured. They give me the worst
Self-Analytical Evaluation headaches I’ve ever had and they stress me out to the max. I always say that I am going to have all of my spreads done earlier than the last, but that never happens. I work on my pages all the time and I come in after school a bunch of days, but I still never have them done when I want them to be done. I get in a state where I have no idea what to even do next and I think that is one of my main problems.next semester I’m going to write out a checklist for myself to follow. My teamwork skills do need improvement. I just have a strong disliking of teamwork because I do not trust other people to get their work done either on time or with the quality that I want. I am normally right when it comes to not trusting people. Most of the time the work is not up to par or is not even done. There have been a few instances when I had to either redo a mod or do the entire thing myself because my team did not do it correctly or at all. In order for a team to prosper, there has to be trust and hope. This semester I had neither. It was discouraging when I believed in my team and they let me down. I do need improvement trying to get my team to work together especially when there is tension between them, which is often. Next year I really want a team that has members I do not know so I will not encounter these problems again. One of the most important qualities that I have seen in yearbook is dedication. All the new members that took the class because they thought it was going to be an easy “A” have absolutely no dedication. They do not care about their work or how it turns out and in this class that is not an option. To be honest I do not think that my team is very dedicated and that is why we are having so much trouble. I am the only member on my team that has a serious dedication towards yearbook and no one understands that to pass this class you have to have a certain level of dedication. My dedication level has definitely increased from last year. I get excited to go to class and work on my pages because I realized that people are paying to see what I created. They are going to be critiquing and reading my pages and I really want them to look at my page and think that it is one of the best. I have spent a lot of time in the yearbook room and whenever people ask me what I’m doing after school or at lunch, my response most of the time is working on my pages. People who do not take yearbook or are even not a team leader do not understand that designing a page is so much harder than it seems. I takes me countless hours to get my pages to look the way I want them to. When we went to Orlando, there were so many classes that I wanted to take, but many of them were full, but I always had a few backups in mind. One of the classes I wanted to attend was full so I went to my backup which was a class about using snap chat as a source of advertisement. I learned a lot in this class actually, which took me by surprise. It was not only about using snapchat, but also other social media websites to advertise the yearbook and get the school population excited. Some of the ideas was to send out reminders on the social media sites or to make teasers of what will be in the yearbook. Another idea was to post videos of production night to our snapchat story to show how hard we work to make the yearbook the way we want it to be. I have used the snapchat many times and help run it. I have been posting about senior ads and ordering the yearbook before the price goes up. I have added many of the students and they all watch the stories that I post and I hope that I am making a little bit of a difference. Next year I will come into yearbook with more skills than I did starting out this year. In the future I will be able to take the basic skills that I learned last year and the new skills that I have learned this year and develop on those. I will always be constantly be growing and expanding my knowledge. After high school, I will use my yearbook skills to make myself unique from the masses. I will use my skills on my resume and future project. I know the efforts I am making now will impact my future for the better.

Reflection #1 The spread I am most proud of has to be pages 90 and 91. This pages was You being blank made us adventurous. This page had my favorite theme and I wish I YOU’RE could have fit more onto the page. On the page there is a wordle about JV football, A POET a flow chart for hiking, a top ten places to go, local restaurants, and a main story AND YOU about latte poetry. During the process of designing this page I have learned to DIDN’T use Photoshop to brighten pictures that are darker than they should be. This EVEN page for take me a while to get done and there were some last minute things that KNOW IT should have been done before the deadline. On deadline night I had my team go to cave creek and take pictures of the most popular restaurants. I should have had the pictures before deadline night but I am not a very on time person and I tend to procrastinate a little bit. I seriously need to work on that. Anyway, my team got the photos and the mod ended up turning out very nicely and it’s one of my favorite mods that I’ve designed. The next problem I encountered was having my 9 team write captions. They do not understand or want to make them, and when they do it is normally not on the correct format or is just not good. On deadline night I had asked them to write captions for two JV football pictures and they never got done. I had to rely on another team member from a different team to help me write the caption. It’s not that my team doesn’t do anything because they do but when I ask them to do something that I need then and there, that’s where they begin to show that they can not always be reliable. Chloe made the hiking flow chart and it is one of my favorite mods on the page. She made this mod all by herself and I came out really well done. Designing the page was a little bit of a struggle because there were so much to put on it. It does look a little cramped but it’s ok because there are a lot of pictures and everything on the page is interesting.

EVERY SCHOOL YEAR new students are braving their first day on campus, but no one ever seems to know what they are thinking or how they feel. Most new students are terrified of moving into a new school because they never know what to expect. Freshmen hear many rumors regarding “Freshman Friday” or how hard high school will be. Depending on the situation, some new students may be afraid to enter a new school while others are ready for a change. “When I was in middle school, my older brother would tell me all about Freshman Friday and that I would get thrown in the trash my first day of school,” said Ana Steinhilber, a freshman. Some new students talked about how coming into Cactus Shadows does not compare to going into any other school. “First Friday confused me at the beginning but I eventually figured out what was going on I found it to be super cool,” said Steinhilber. Freshman Camp occurs before school starts, where incoming freshmen get together and get ready for their first year in high school. They learn about the school, take a tour of the campus, and find their classes, all in a single day. “I was scared of going into high school because there are so many people and I didn’t know what to expect. Freshman Camp was a lot of fun and it definitely prepared me because now I love high school,” said Hannah Bryant, a freshman. However, some students did not come into their freshman year feeling nervous or anxious and decided not to go to Freshman Camp. Anthony Pagnotta, a freshman, thought it would be a breeze until his first day when he got lost. “I was trying to find E2020 but I was on the other side of the campus till I found two other kids to help me out. Now I’ve been all around campus and know my way around,”said Pagnotta. story by alexa hunter-wilson

I would have to say that the spreads I am least proud of are 32-33 and 40-41. Page 32-33 was you being outgoing makes us welcoming. I originally had to cover Chinese exchange students on my spread and I had the page laid out exactly the way I wanted it to look, but then later when I went to look at it, someone had moved everything around and gotten rid of some of my mods. I was actually a little sad that this happened because I like the way it looked before but now it just looks like a mess. There is barely anything on the page and I am going to have to go back and redesign it all and this time I really want it to stay that way. The other page, page 40-41, is just a wreck right now to be perfectly honest. But, I have gotten everything I need to finish the page and I am going to design it so well that everyone won’t know what hit them. I really love this spreads theme and I wish I had buckled down and gotten my work done on time along with the spread and I am really trying my hardest to do my best, but it just isn’t working out for me. It’s ok though, I got this. I am going to get everything done this week I promise, even if it kills me, which it probably will end up doing.

Reflection #3 My favorite picture that I have taken this year is of Alyssa Witzig and Alexa Dragone. It was taken before the big blue pep rally. Alyssa, a student council member, was assigned the job to get people pre-pepped for the pep rally. To do this, she used face paint to increase the student spirit. I like this picture because it is a very high quality photo. It incorporate the school’s spirit and shows how the students are involved with the school.
Reflection #4 Have I been an asset to the staff? Huh well I would like to say I have been, but I am very confused if I have been or not. I have really tried my best, but I feel like it has not been enough. I feel like because of this, many of the staff members do not like me anymore, but nearly tolerate me. I wish this was not the case because I really do try my hardest, I just have a problem with procrastination. I want the yearbook staff to like me and I want next year to be a better year for me. Better yet, I want the second semester to be better than the first. I have done my pages to the best of my abilities and I have tried to help both the team leaders and staff members with anything they need help with. I have helped some people with their projects and even with some of the deadline assignments. I want to help more, but I do not know what to help with. Many of the members of yearbook have helped me a lot this year and I really hope that I can use this knowledge that I learned this semester in future semester.
Reflection #5 Reflection #5 During this year, I have encountered many problems. Some have been with my team, some with members of yearbook, and others with myself. First off, with my team. I have not always been able to rely on them and sometimes that can become so frustrating. I try to present myself as their team leader, but since I have known them all for so long, they see me as just Sam. They know that they will ultimately get a good grade in the class because I am the one that grades them and I really do not want to see them fail. I also have a gut feeling that some of the editors do not like me. I don’t know why I have this feeling, but I do and I believe that it is either because of my personality or my page 40-41 spread, or both. Mr. Adamson even said that I was one of the worst team leaders because of that page and I couldn’t tell if he was joking or not. He probably wasn’t though. My procrastination has really impacted my life and I am getting really sick of it. I have no idea what I am going to do to change it, but I want it gone. Procrastinating has literally ruined my life. If these problems ever occurred again, I have no idea what to do. With my team I could lay down the law and tell them straight up that they need to start working harder and that half-assing their work is not going to cut it. With my procrastination issue, I could make myself a yearbook calendar and write down everything that I should be doing on that exact day. I definitely need to start to prepare myself for the next semester more and start my spreads earlier. It still hasn’t hit me how much time and effort goes into making these spreads and I think after this last deadline it was kind of like a punch in the face. It was absolutely a wake up call to get my act together and that will show in the next deadline. Overall, I think I am handling this situation as best as I can. I have talked to my team and told them that they do need to get their work done, but I feel as a team leader I have to set a better example for them. I am going to get everything done for next semester and set a better example for them, but for this deadline, I feel as if I could have done better. I did not get all of my work done and I feel disappointed in myself and I don’t want that. I know I try my hardest, but I also cause problems for myself that should not have occurred. My biggest weakness is most definitely procrastination and it is slowly killing me. I put stuff off because I think I have all the time in the world when in actuality, I don’t. I have barely any time on my hands and when I do it is either taken over by homework or I take the time to just relax or catch up on sleep. I normally put sleeping before anything during my free time and that is probably my biggest problem. Next semester, I will make lists for what I have to do and when I am going to get them done. I just need to realize that I do not have all the time in the world and I need to sit down and do my work when I have the time to.
All about me

“This is my first time ever doing a car wash and it was actually really fun. There was a lot of business and we made a lot of money” said Slockbower.
1 WHILE WASHING CARS, Kaitlyn Moore, a junior and Ryan Pogemiller, a freshman, look at the unceasing amount of cars. Starting out slow, it did not take long for the word of the Student Council car wash to get out. After the first hour, there was not a time when there was not a car waiting to be washed.
2 ASSIGNED A CERTAIN JOB DURING THE CAR WASH, Lauren Busbee, a junior, rinses off a car after other members had finished washing. With the temperatures reaching a high of ninety degrees, each group would quickly do their job so the next team could soon come in after to finish the car before the water or soap dried on the car.

I need an alarm clock in order to wake up at the appropriate time. It’s a struggle for me to get out of bed in the morning. Weekday mornings I hit the snooze button several times to get more sleep. I feel tired, irritable, and stressed out during the week. I have trouble concentrating and remembering. I feel slow with critical thinking, problem solving and being creative. I often fall asleep watching TV. I often fall asleep in lectures. I often fall asleep after a heavy meal.
3 SUFFERING FROM A DEPRAVATION OF SLEEP,
Sydney lee, a senior, falls fast asleep in her second period class. Working on individual work, Lee took the opportunity to catch up on the lost sleep she did not get the night before.
SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK ENDLESS homework leaves many students with no time to get the required amount of sleep. Nine to ten is the number of hours that each student should be getting per night, but many do not. If more than four of these questions are answered true, then you are technically sleep deprived.
HANDLING A JOB AND SCHOOL WORK can be difficult for many students. Tara Welsh, a junior, has found a way to do both. Welsh has been working at Oregano’s Pizza Bistro on Cave Creek road since July. “I’m always scheduled from like 4:45 to like 8 or 9 so if I know I’m working later shifts I’ll normally do my homework before I go to work, and sometimes I work in the morning so I’ll have the whole rest of the day to finish my homework,” said Welsh. Welsh got the job after her
FREAKIN’ WEEKEND
sister had to quit because she was starting college, so she already knew everyone who worked there. “Most of everyone I work with either goes to Cactus Shadows or another high school, or they’re in college. It’s really great because everyone’s pretty young and it’s like a big family,” said Welsh. Welsh absolutely loves working at Oregano’s. “Some of the things customers say over the phone or in person make my day. I always leave work in a better mood than before,”
THE weekend, the only time that we do not have to spend seven plus hours in a place where judgement is cast upon many and confusion is always a remaining feeling. Everyone does something different, but sometimes we all do something alike.

Many students dread answering the phone, but Welsh really enjoys it. “I love answering the phone, and greeting the guests and getting their orders done because it’s actually really cool to know the whole menu and like know everything that’s on it,” said Welsh. Welsh says her favorite things to get are, “barbeque chicken pizza, cheesy bread, Caesar salad, and the Zani Ziti. And don’t forget about the chocolate chip pizza cookie.”
