SIERRA GALINDO PORTFOLIO 2014-2015
Self Reflection After being on the staff for coming onto three years now, I have learned many skills that better me as not only a writer and editor, but a better journalist. I have learned that deadlines are important in order to produce the paper. When a writer does not get their story, photograph, or sidebar in, it keeps the editor from being able to complete their pages and that slows down the production of the entire paper. Another important skills I learned was teamwork and communication. This is something I have certainly improved on from my first year on the staff. Last year, I hardly communicated with my editors at all, now as an editor I make sure to check in with writers and help them where they need it. Journalism ethics is one of the most important things I have learned while being on the staff. As a journalist under a public school administration, you have to be careful what you put into articles and sometimes make some hard decisions. You sometimes have to sacrifice your articles or parts of it for the sake of the school and sometimes other people. For example, when Wyatt Bush gave the dance show a bad grade, we had to change it because Wyatt did not understand the dance show, so he should not have even graded the event. Sometimes as a journalist, especially when dealing with a touchy subject, you might have to interview people that do not want to tell you anything. I had this happen to me when I was interviewing Ian Cordwell and Carrie Dyrek about the recall election and firing of the town manager. By the end of the interview, Dyrek just kept saying “I don’t know,” so I simply thanked her and Ian for their time, and left. When I am a professional journalist, I am sure I will have to deal with interviews like that one constantly, so having dealt with that will better prepare me. Dedication would have to be the second most important thing I have learned while being on the staff. Being a journalist is hard work and it certainly is not something for everyone. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to do it and if that is something you lack, you are going to have a really hard time making it in the real world. When I interviewed Mary Beth Faller of the AZ Republic for a project in English class, she told me “journalism is a calling, no one does it to get rich.” I completely agree, I work hard to be the best journalist I can be I hope that it is paying off. Advertising is a skill I do know a little about, but not enough to say I have any skills with it. What I have learned about advertising is that you want to try to emphasize the success of our paper and use it as a good marketing strategy. For example, you want to tell potential advertisers who reads the paper and how many people read it. If their business is targeted more for adults, talk about how students bring home the paper for their parents to read. You do not want to take no for an answer, but if they incessant on not purchasing an ad, make sure you get them to say “no” twice.
Reflection #1 My most significant piece of work this semester

had to be the article I wrote on Bike Week and The Hideaway Grill. I believe this piece is my best because I threw my entire being into it, and it was on something that I really love and am interested in. First semester, I assigned myself the article on the bond issue specifically to push myself out of my comfort zone and write a longer article, but for this article I chose it because I felt like I was the best person to write it. While I would not necessarily consider myself a biker, going to Bike Week is always fun for me

The Hideaway Bar and Grill, located “somewhere in Cave Creek,” is a bar that prides itself on being a relaxed environment where people make new friends. Mark Bradshaw, owner of The Hideaway, came to Cave Creek nearly 20 years ago where he opened up the bar. Bradshaw had been passing through Cave Creek for many years, tried many different careers, such as selling insurance, until one day he decided to open The Hideaway. Rick Stahl, General Manager of The Hideaway, had known Bradshaw since third grade. They had both tried other careers and worked in the hospitality before when they both decided to come together and work at the bar together. “It [Cave Creek] is an eclectic town. It’s fun to walk around and say hello to everyone, it’s just fun to associate,” said Stahl. In addition to owning and operating The Hideaway, Bradshaw also owns Cave Creek Tap Haus alongside his partner Jim O’Toole. Tap Haus is located a block down from Hideaway, and has also became a popular bar for bikers when it opened up in 2011. With 27 televisions, live music, and over 50 beers on tap, it makes the bar a great tourist stop said Rick Stahl , the as well. Bradshaw described the bar as “old Europe general manager of The meets New Orleans” to the Phoenix New Times. Hideaway Bike Week is a yearly event where all sorts of Motorcycle Clubs (MC) and vendors come to show off their bikes and products. Griz, a path maker who comes to The Hideaway every Saturday. Custom bike makers like Dirty Bird, MRI, Azzkikr, and CLS Cycles also attend to showcase their custom bikes and offer services such as radio installation. “It [Bike Week] is just crazy,” Hayden Sissingh, a junior said, “All you see is just miles and miles of bikes parked on the side of the road.” The bar looks out on a “sea of bikes” where people come out to show off their bikes and what they have customized. Stahl remarked that the connotation of a biker “just isn’t quite right.” “Some of the bikers that come are lawyers, doctors, politicians,” said Stahl, “it isn’t just like Hell’s Angels. It’s not that kind of bar.”

viewing Rick Stahl, the General Manager of The Hideaway, was the best part for me. He was not always a Creeker, but you could tell how much he loved the town and all of these bikers that come into the bar; he was by far the best person I have ever had to interview. Since this piece was a spotlight, I did not have to worry so much about facts and making sure everything was on point. It was an easy article to write since I knew so much about the subject, and I am glad I got to write it. 20

I loved front of the Islands restaurant at noon, spending the day shopping at stores and watching a movie at the AMC theatre are just some of the memories many students have from the Desert Ridge shopping center. However, businesses continue to close, making these memories more difficult to recreate. “Desert Ridge was the place that I could go if I just wanted to spend time alone with my friends,” Stephanie Haan, a senior said, “I remember feeling like a grown up back in middle school if I got to walk around the mall for a couple hours. The funny part is my mom would never actually leave when I was there, she would always be in Joannes or Ross until it was time to go.” Not all of the retail stores that have closed over the last few years have Desert Ridge to blame for their failures. Stores such as Wet Seal and The Disney Store were shut down nationwide. Over the last year, Wet Seal closed 11 stores in Arizona. The closest mall that has all these shops running efficiently is Arrowhead Towne Center in Glendale. “I wish they still had the Disney store there. It’s not like everyone has the money to go on a Disney vacation. Now if I want to get any kind of shirt or bag I have to buy it online,” Parker Long a senior said. New stores do not last more than a couple months. A few examples of this are Bath Junkie and Focus. There are many factors as to why these lstores closed; too high of rent, not enough business, com-
them, and even though they were pricey I still shopped there. Now the only real shoe store left at Desert Ridge is DSW, and personally, I don’t like their stuff nearly as much,” Haan said. The outdoor mart is looking more like a ghost town with every empty shop it adds on. It also appears that stores that have been at the mall for longer periods are closing as well. Aeropostale, which is currently closing down in other locations, first closed its doors at the Desert Ridge. “Stores closing at Desert Ridge hasn’t really had an effect on me, but I am a guy so I don’t do a lot of shopping. I never thought Desert Ridge was all that great. I like Scottsdale 101 better, there is more restaurants,” Cameron Horan, a Cactus Shadows alumnus said. Payless Shoe store was closed down and replaced with an AT&T store. The mall is also home to a T-Mobile and a Verizon store; this replacement most like done to encourage AT&T users to come to Desert Ridge. The Children’s Place is also rumored to be seeing its final days. Many claim that the reasoning as to why these two business lost their place in the marketplace is that their merchandise failed to impress customers. “My mom used to buy clothes there for my little brother all the time but then she stopped. She said that a lot of their shirts are ugly now and that they aren’t things she wants to see her three-year-old wearing out in public,” Long said.

Demands for a recall began when the council decided that there needed to be a change in administration and terminated the contract of former Cave Creek Town Manager, Usama Abujbarah, with a 4-3 vote. “As new council members, why wouldn’t they give the town manager, with institutional knowledge on every aspect of the town, at least three or four months before you make that decision?” Susan Clancy, candidate in the election, asked the Arizona Republic. Abujbarah filed a lawsuit against Cave Creek and the town council, saying that the vote violated Arizona’s Open Meeting Law. According to Sonoran News, since the lawsuit has been filed about $195,000 has been paid to Dickinson Wright law firm. Don Sorchych, Editorin-Chief of the Sonoran News, commented in an editorial that it would have cost the town less just to buy out Abujbarah’s contract of $120,000. Local news publication Sonoran News has also been drawn into the controversy, with Sorchych writing editorials about how “vindictive” the firing of Abujbarah was. There have also been allegations that Adam Trenk, vice mayor, told Abujbarah that he could remain town manager only if he agreed to “freeze out the Sonoran News.” “It’s not really politics anymore, it’s just mud slinging,” Keith Durkin, a senior and son of recall candidate Mike Durkin, said. “They [the town] are just going back and forth and trying to get all of these people out of office.” In order to recall someone, the people must fill out a petition for each person they want to recall. When filling out the petition, the person must state why they are recalling. After they fill out the form and they comply with the statutes, they are given certain paperwork from the town clerk and with that paperwork are petitions. Most people also form a political committee so that citizens may know who is in charge of the committee and who is recalling a council member. The committee then are assigned a number and are then given the petitions so that they may circulate them and get enough valid signatures on the petition. Only people who live within town limits and are eligible to vote can sign the petitions. The sitting council member who is being recalled is offered the opportunity to resign and if choose to not resign, they are then given time to write a 200 word statement defending themselves that appears on the ballot along with the reason they are being recalled. “It’s basically a redo of the last election,” Adam Trenk, vice mayor, said to the Arizona Republic, “This recall is unfounded.” The candidates that are up for the seats being recalled include Susan Clancy, Mark Lipsky, Dick Esser and Steven LaMar. Susan Clancy, who was a former member of the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) school board, is running against Adam Trenk for his seat on the council. Steven LaMar faces Spitzer in the race. LaMar was elected onto the council in 2009 and again in 2011. He also ran for a seat in 2013 but came out unsuccessful. LaMar was on the first commission and helped write the plan for when Cave Creek incorporated as a town. Mark Lipsky faces Mike Durkin. Dick Esser ran in the 2013 primary election, but withdrew from the general election. Now he is back running for council against Reg Monachino.

what is more important to do. Although this is still a problem for me, I havecertainly improved my time management skills since I not only have to worry about my regular school work and newspaper duties, but working at Firehouse Subs as well. What has really helped me stay organized was keeping a bullet journal. I just write down everything I have to, whether that be finishing an essay, getting an interview, or remembering to text someone back. All of this has really helped me stay organized, and manage my deadlines.

is possible to buy happiness. At least for some people. Research has shown that while some people believe purchasing items will bring them happiness, others prefer paying for experiences over items. “It’s hard to put a value on memories, at least things have a specific price tag,” Ryan Boyd, a senior, said. Many people are aware that life experiences might make them happier, but will still choose an item over an experience because they believe it makes better financial sense. According to sciencedaily, people are aware and can predict that paying for an experience will make them happier, but people do not understand the monetary value that can be put to an experience. For example, if someone came into money and had two options: to either buy a car or go on vacation, evidence from science daily suggests they would buy a car. People believe that following a vacation, they would have nothing to show for the money they spent. However, with the purchase of a car, it is an item they get to keep and relate to its cost. Of course, happiness is relative. While it may be seen as something felt in a moment it is also important to realize happiness could be a general feeling of positive wellbeing. “If you don’t spend money or save it for a specific
reason, it does little good just sitting around. Without something to buy, money is just paper,” Boyd said. Having fun is a way to achieve happiness, choosing to spend money on a concert, activity or vacation will provide a person with positive memories, whereas material things may not always be so sought after. The newest computer or next generation iPhone will not always be the newest, and the want for these specific items will fade. San Francisco State University conducted a study that revealed that people are aware that experiences make them happier, however they still believe that items have a better value. Furthermore, another Cornell study shows that when we buy something related to experience, we remain happy for longer periods of time, whereas the happiness from buying material items will fade quickly. Also, it is possible to have the same material items as other people, but experiences belong to individuals alone. “I went to California this summer, and even though a lot of people went to California this summer, nobody did the same things or has the same memories as me,” Lexi Covelli, a senior, said.
With material items, it is easier to second guess the purchase. Someone could buy a new computer and for weeks wonder if they should have gotten the smaller one, or the one with retina display, or the one that was purple. These thoughts do not make people happy, whereas memories are not so easy to second guess. People know what bands they want to see live, or where they want to go for vacation. Material items are more easily compared than experiences, and it is human nature to compare. If one person has a new TV and they see another person just purchased a newer TV with a larger screen, their purchase no longer seems as exciting. However, if two people go on vacation to the same place, it is difficult to compare because each person has their own and unique memories.

Take heed when TexTing while driving Texting and driving has become frequent in the lives of teenagers and even adults. Many people have done it, some of whom aren’t willing to admit it. However, many have taken the pledge to not text and drive. “I feel like even though we know the consequences of texting and driving, we still choose to do it. It’s not intentional, it’s just habit at this point for all of us unfortunately,” said Talia Ortiz, a senior. In their annual study, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 31 percent of U.S. drivers aged 18-64 reported that they sent, read, or looked at text messages/ emails while driving at least once within 30 days of the CDC poll alone. "I rear-ended someone once because I was distracted by my cellphone. Luckily, no one was injured and their car wasn't damaged, but my car had $1500 in damage. I learned my lesson after that," said Molly Gum, English teacher. The CDC also reports that drivers under the age of 20, who are generally the most inexperienced, have the highest proportion of texting-related fatal crashes at 27 percent. texting and driving, four states ban texting for novice drivers. Arizona and Montana are the only states who do not have a specific ban on texting and driving. According to distraction.gov, the official U.S. Government Website on Distracted Driving, an estimated 421,000 people have been injured in motor-vehicle crashes due to distracted driving which includes texting. At any given daylight moment in the U.S., 660,000 drivers use their cellphones while driving. In a recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, engaging in texting, dialing or calling on a cell phone while driving increases your chances of getting into a crash by three times. “I think that in order for teens to not be tempted to text while driving they should put their phone on silent and out of sight,” Abbey Roberts, a senior, said. However, earlier this year in July, the city of Flagstaff banned texting while driving and cycling. Coconino County has also issued a similar ban on texting while driving.

Shelby Nichols delves into the psychology of video games and what makes them so popular
When playing video games, people get to enter an entirely different reality than that of their own. Some would argue that is the reason behind its popularity; the ability to escape the real world. In a MacArthur Foundation survey of young adults age 12-17, it was found that 99 percent of boys play video games and 94 percent of girls, with little differences across ethnicities. “It’s giving you a whole different perspective on life,” Chris DiMarco, a junior, said. “It’s like a virtual reality that you can’t create with anything else.” Scott Rigby, with a Ph.D. in clinical and social psychology from the University of Rochester, helped to found a research company that was designed to examine what makes video games so addicting. The result led him to what is called, “the three basic psychological needs.” The first psychological need being “competence” or the desire to seek out control, or to feel mastery over a situ-
ation. People naturally like to find success in something and make accomplishments, video games quench that thirst whenever someone can level up or even finish a game. “I like playing video games because they have amazing graphics and because it is an escape into another world where you can hang out with your friends and not worry about real life,” Duncan Scheope, a junior, said. The second need is “autonomy,” the desire to feel independent or have a certain amount of control over actions. This theory is behind why imprisonment is a punishment and rules are disobeyed so often. To be in control of everything and make decisions is what is appealing about video games; they allow for an unlimited amount of free choices. Final need is “relatedness,” or the feeling of wanting to be accepted and make significant contributions to life. In a 2003 study, the University of Massachusetts Medical

School discovered that people with selfless actions generally have higher levels of mental health and overall less stress. In video games, the gamer is the main person of the game and has many opportunities to make significant contributions to the situation the game offers. "I can understand the appeal of video games to so many teens," Steve Weled, video gamer, said. "The real world can be hard and scary and video games help people forget." While video games are there for people as a means to escape from the real world, it can even help students discover what they want to do in the future. “I used to want to do something else with my life but then I started playing video games a lot and it made me want to design video games. It helped me decide what I want to do with my life,” DiMarco said.
VIVA LA PLUTO
On February 18, 1930, Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto as a planet, changing the solar system from having eight planets to nine. In 2006 the International Astronomical Union, a group that focuses on naming planetary bodies, declared that Pluto was not considered a planet. As a result, Pluto became known as a dwarf planet. However, A recent debate at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics concluded that Pluto is a planet. The public will know shortly if Pluto will be reinstated.
MARS NEEDS WOMEN
It is a common theme in science fiction: humans drive Earth into the ground, poisoning their planet and sucking up it’s resources like a dehydrated parasite. So they pack up their things and make a noble migration across the stars- giving them the opportunity to tarnish another one. Such a concept may no longer be fiction. Mars One is a Norwegian, non-profit organization convinced they will have humans on Mars by 2025. They expect to have astronauts on mars not only looking rather closely at orange rocks, but a functioning human colony: a stronghold and safe haven for when Earth inevitably falls apart. Many believe that a colony on Mars is crucial to human survival. Elon Musk, a young, multi-billionaire and CEO of SpaceX, accredited humans making no extra-terrestrial

Musk has also introduced the idea of bioengineering humans to be better adapted for Martian conditions. “If the only way I could get to another planet was to be bio engineered, I’d just take one for the team,” Sarah Nelson, a sophomore, said. New research has shown that humans may join the ranks of dead, one-planet-civilizations. A study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology showed that the first space pilgrims to arrive on Mars may only survive for 68 days- making the seven month journey only to be poisoned, by the mass amount of oxygen produced from vegetables. “Oh, I think I would go on a one way trip to Mars,” Robert

MAGINE an invention that would replace
all the asphalt roads in the nation with solar panels. This invention would be able to filter storm water, prevent icy roads caused by melting snow, light up when there is an obstruction in the road, and most importantly, generate more than three times the electricity the US uses. Now imagine this invention as something that has already been invented. Solar Roadways was created by an Idaho couple with an electrical engineering background. In 2009, the Federal Highway Association contacted the couple to build the first prototype. These solar panels are made with a durable textured glass and have been reported, through testing, to withstand around 250,000 pounds. “I think it would be worth the cost because it gets rid of all the extra costs, such as repainting, and it also has some great environmental benefits,” Natalie Neri, junior, said. If this invention were to replace all asphalt, the US would no longer have to rely so heavily on fossil fuels and foreign energy. Also, people with electric cars will be able to charge up anywhere on the road, leading to the same range as a gasolinepowered car. “We would be a self sustaining country, running off the energy they [solar panel streets] would provide,” Joey Meshinsky, senior, said.
Currently, this project is in its second stage of development, and has had multiple tests done on it so far such as load testing, traction testing, and impact resistance training, passing all tests listed above. An aspect of this idea with the intention of saving some money is what the creators call “cable corridors”. These corridors would store all cables so they are no longer susceptible to weather and would allow utility workers easy access to them. Since these would be under ground, there would be no more need for cell towers or wires having to be replaced from weather damage. Also, since these wires would run along all roads, there would be no more cell phone dead spots or areas with slow or no internet connection. “It is a really smart idea, but if it were to happen, it would take a lot of time to tear up all that asphalt and replace it with those solar panels, not to mention costly,” Meshinsky said. To cover all the streets in America, which add to roughly 29,000 square miles, would require around 5.6 billion panels, a cost of about 56 trillion dollars. As of June 20, 2014, a campaign to raise money through indiegogo has raised $2,200,341 with the original $1,000,000 goal. This money will go towards more testing of the product.

At age fourteen, Josh Alcorn decided to become Leelah Alcorn. Three years later, Alcorn committed suicide after being denied the right to change her sex. This caused the public eye to look at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. “When an individual makes the decision to end their own life, I think there are a multitude of factors at play that make it difficult- even impossible- to say whether or not it could have been prevented,” Molly Gum, LGBT support group advisor and English teacher, said. Alcorn did not have the easiest time when it came to being accepted for who she wanted to be. Her parents, who were very religious, refused to allow Alcorn to become a woman and shoved her into therapy also making her go to church more often. “I think that your parents are the people that you look up to the most and you want their acceptance the most, and when you don’t have that it can make you do some extreme things and I think that’s what happened in this case,” Amy Abel, a junior, said. Religion was a large part of Alcorn's life growing up. She lived in a house where she went to church every Sunday and being a straight man, in her case, was what she was raised to think was the only way to go. Her parents took her to Christian therapists, who she said in her suicide note were biased and
worked up The stress of school is getting students...
by GRACE ROWETT style editor
Twenty-first century students have come to the point of devastation if they do not get a perfect 4.0 GPA. In extreme cases, students will have meltdowns for hours because they have been trained to believe that they will never be good enough unless they have the perfect GPA. At a young age, high school students are suffering from the side effects of stress by getting increasingly bad headaches, chronic fatigue, and irritation. "Sometimes I feel like I can never catch a break because of all the school work I have. I always stress myself out too much and work myself up until I see my grade, and most of the time I'm not satisfied," Emma Smith, a senior, said. While a little bit of stress can be a good thing as it motivates a person to do better, too much stress can backfire. Almost 40 percent of parents in the United States have said their high schooler is experiencing loads of stress that they never even imagined was possible. According to USA Today, more -Riley Becquet than a quarter (27 percent) say they experience "extreme stress" during the school year, vs. 13 percent in the summer. 34 percent expect stress to increase in the coming year. “I always find that I barely have any time to balance everything in my life. I have a job so that takes up a lot of my time, and when I get home I always have homework to do. I don’t have time for anything else,” Riley Becquet, a senior, said. Between balancing school work, a job, a social life, and family life, stress can be overwhelming to a student. Unhealthy behaviors associated with stress can start early and continue through adulthood, according to USA Today. The habits and ways people handle stress are apparently setting themselves up for "a life of chronic stress and illness." "I either find it incredibly hard sleeping at night or I'm constantly exhausted, there is not in between," Smith said. A report on USA today states that stress seems to be affecting teen's performance in all aspects of life; 40 percent admitted they ignored their duties at home, 29 percent said they neglect work or school, 32 percent said they suffered from bad headaches, and 26 percent reported changes in sleeping habits.

told her that she was wrong for what she wanted to be. Alcorn thought that God did not make mistakes and she was going through a phase. “It makes me really sad because I can understand where her parents are coming from, being a Christian, and if you have completely orthodox beliefs in the bible then you feel a certain way about all the issues begin transgender. However, I also feel that the bible can be interpreted in different ways for different religions, for different people, and it makes me really sad knowing that her parents were not willing to try and understand the bible in a different way as it would relate to Leelah’s situation and it ended with her death,” Abby Walker, a junior, said. There has been a sudden increase in awareness over LGBT issues, which has opened doors for people to find help or someone to confide in without being judged. Support groups are in most schools and it shows people that there are others who can sit with each other and be there. Since her death, there has been a petition surfacing the internet called “Leelah’s Law”. Which bans conversion therapy, which is a type of therapy that focuses on changing the minds of homosexual or transgender people to becoming either straight or staying their current sex. The petition has received 114,767 , 14,767 more than it’s original goal of 100,000.

ACE Fitness claims that one workout session can generate as much 90-120 minutes of relaxation. This is due to the fact that while working out chemicals in the brain, known as neurotransmitters, are stimulated. This is said to be why after physical activity, most people have a low stress level. HE holiday season is over.
The delicious holiday food is gone, and for many the New Year’s resolutions have come and gone as well. According to Frobes magazine, the second most popular New Year’s resolution is to maintain health through diet and exercise. However, being physically active everyday can be easier said than done. It takes 21 days to make a habit, which means for everyone that hopes to become more in shape, day 21 will be the day it is no longer inconvenient and painful to exercise. Although many want to get past that 21 day and become more in shape or lose weight, there are many other benefits to exercise. “I think that I can do more and I am helping my body to be healthier,” Matthias McIver, a track and field athlete, said. One of the major benefits of exercise is an overall healthier body but according to research done at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise Donnell McClendon, a three to five days personal trainer at Pinnacle a week will add as Fitness, said. much as six years to ones life. In addition to a longer life, exercising for only thirty minutes a day also offers a healthier life which includes, healthier muscles including the heart, more energy throughout the day, better sleep and a reduced chance of catching common viruses. “The benefit of exercise is knowing that you’re giving yourself a healthy start or finish to a day that is usually driven by stress,” Donnell Mcclendon, a personal trainer at Pinnacle Fitness, said. Allison Zavesky started exercising towards the end of December as part of a New Year’s resolution. “I also wanted to have more energy and sleep better,” Zavesky said. Immediately after exercising Zavesky felt “tired and gross, but eventually I start feeling better about myself,” Zavesky said. Zavesky stated that since she started exercising daily, she has noticed she sleeps better and feels like she can do more throughout the day. If there is still some difficulty staying on track, here are some simple tips and tricks to keep going. Start working out Monday or as early as possible, this will set the day and the week off on the right foot. Find a workout buddy, this does not necessarily have to be someone to work out with rather someone that can simply call and make sure no workouts were skipped. Do not take more than one day off as long breaks will make it difficult to start working out again. If assistance is needed in order to increase health, weight loss or endurance, consult a trainer or a personal trainer. Lastly, try investing some money into a tip jar, after one day of exercise is complete place some money in the tip jar.

petrated against women. Within months it picked up steam and became a worldwide trend. Topics associated with the hashtag are the sexualization of men v. women, who pays for dates, who is allowed to have preferences, chivalry v. independence, and slut shaming. “I would rather pour scalding hot water into my eyes than follow the meninist page,” Cole Parker, a junior, said. According to Buzzfeed, a Meninist club had been set up a high school which aimed to counter the Female Society Club. Buzzfeed reported that a female student at the high school told them the club was started because the founders were reported for sexual harassment by several girls and “think that it’s funny.” There are also hoodies and shirts printed with the word ‘Meninist’ across the front that are being sold. Although the page and the hashtag sharply divide teens and young adults, many feminists have “hijacked” the hashtag, using it to point out how ridiculous they feel the antifeminists are.
_RYAN DENSON
Wyatt Bush discusses the origin of the hashtag. The hashtag is the trademark characteristic of the popular social media website Twitter. Used as a tool with trending topics, users may hashtag sayings or even one word to add emphasis on a tweet, or even to participate in a trending topic or joke. The hashtag has traditionally been a pound sign, used when making phone calls, telephone transactions, or even as a shortcut to the word 'number.’ The first use of the term "hash tag" was a blog post written by Stowe Boyd, titled "Hash Tags = Twitter Groupings," according to Ben Zimmer, chair of the American Dialect Society's New Words Committee. On July 2, 2009, Twitter began turning hashtags into hyperlinks in Twitter search results that contained the hash tagged word. This further pushed the idea of trending topics, introduced by Twitter in 2010. Trending topics are used to show hashtags that are popular. Hashtags have since made their way to other social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram, performing
almost the exact same function as they would on Twitter. One of the most unique qualities of hashtags are that they are spontaneous trends, and it is almost impossible to predict which trend is next. Often times, in the twitter accounts of young users, hashtags will be part of a joke. For example, when Chicago Bulls player Derrick Rose re injured his knee, the hashtag '#ThingsStrongerThanDerrickRoseKnee' was born. Viewed as juvenile and rude, these kinds of hashtags are an outlet for Twitter users to express whatever form of humor they possess. "I love using hashtags. I've seen so many gems and laughed so hard at some of the jokes," Trey Nicholson, a senior, said. "One of my favorite hashtags was on Thanksgiving. People were using #MentionFollowersYoureThankfulFor and it was a lot of love all over the TL (timeline)," Jesse Davis, a senior, said. Hashtags have become a huge part of our internet culture and look like they are to stay and adapt for many years. 17

#MENINISM Meninism and meninists are now front and center on social media. For those who may not be aware, some men have played on the word ‘feminism’ in an effort to mock or take stand against feminism. The popular hashtag #meninism began appearing in 2013 when a group of men started sharing jokes about men’s sex culture and sarcastically bashed feminism. But, since it’s initial creation, sides are split on whether to treat it as sarcasm, or a cultural phenomena. “I think it’s a mixture between people who don’t know what feminism is and people who know what it is but just make a page to mock it. If men really think they need a Twitter page to “fight for their rights,” I really don’t understand what rights are missing to fight for,” Mackenzie Coffman, a senior, said. The Meninist page on Twitter, @ MeninistTweet, has already accumulated over 700 thousand followers. It was created by two men and claims that the page is just a parody and “obviously” sarcasm.” The hashtag also went hand-in-hand with #YesAllMen, a trend that aimed to downplay the rape culture per-

NXIETY, sleeplessness, headaches, and acne are problems that often plague high schoolers, and essential oils may be a natural, viable solution. Extracted from the parts of a plant that keep it alive and protect it from disease, essential oils can theoretically do the same for the body that they do for plants, according to Melanie Giardini, doTERRA wellness advocate and certified holistic health coach. DoTERRA is a leading essential oils distributor. Since the age of the Roman Empire, these oils have been highly prized for their health benefits. DoTERRA offers supplements to help a wide variety of ills. "Essential oils do not cure disease, they do not prevent illness, they only help your body to heal itself," said Giardini. "Your body is perfectly able to heal itself." Giardini was afflicted with Lupus, an inflammatory disease affecting the immune system, fibromyalgia, a disease that amplifies the brain's perception of pain, and migraine headaches. Since beginning her use of essential oils, Giardini's symptoms have been greatly reduced. "I felt so incredibly blessed, like I'd been given a second chance on my life," Giardini said,"and it was one of those things that I felt I needed to share with other people." Western medicine is based on the direct treatment of symptoms, while essential oils are designed to work with the body to address root causes, according to the doTERRA website. “I have a lot of stress because I have a lot of schoolwork and after-school activities, and there’s a lot of pressure to do well. But nature does amazing stuff for people, so I’m sure the essential oils would help,” Hailey Otero, freshman, said. “Plus I love the smell of rosemary.” Rosemary oil is used as a stress reducer and to help solve digestive issues. Kaitlyn Gallen, a junior, said that essential oils have helped her improve her skin and manage breakouts. "They really get to the root of the problem," Gallen said. “IT’S GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD,” Jenna Spicer, a transformational Reiki master, said. Reiki is a form of healing that started in 1922 in Japan. It focuses on the idea that there is an unseen life force of energy that is believed to exist in everything. Reiki energy is said to come from a higher power. Reiki is difficult to explain. In order to help make things clearer, Spicer gave an example. “When a little kid cuts themselves, they’re told to kiss their wound and make it better.
That’s Reiki in it’s traditional form.”
Reiki is performed by a Reiki master by placing their hands above or on the body and sending love to the patient.
While receiving Reiki, the patient is in a sleep-like state. The idea is that the body will heal itself, and prevent illness. Reiki is the “belief that there’s this space for this special energy. Energy of love,” Spicer said.
Different from meditation, Reiki focuses more on healing. “I would say
that meditation is more of a state of mind and Reiki is a meditative state,” Spicer said. “Meditation is more just like emptying your thoughts but Reiki is more like focusing on healing and getting everything in your

After spending many hours researching Reiki she has learned the history and positive impacts of Reiki. “The number one purpose is to promote healing and love,” Spicer said. Reiki can be used “all the time and for everything,” Spicer said. She added “Instead of road rage I send them Reiki and love.” Reiki is separated into three levels: the first level focuses on healing of that person, the second stage on healing others and the third stage on becoming a Reiki master and

If the bonds fail to pass, the projects that were listed and set aside to be funded by the bonds will have to be paid for with other funds. It is unknown at this time how long it would take for the projects to be done. “Students expect to come to school and have a cool environment in Arizona or in the winter a warm one, so they expect the HVAC system to work,” said Burdick. “I think we want all our students to work and come to school in a safe environment, and parents expect when they send their students to school that there are certain safety knowns.” Another issue voters will decide on is who will fill the two open positions on the governing board. Bikers Against Child Abuse or BACA is an organization that breaks the stereotypes of bikers by helping children who have been affected by abuse. Their motto is “No child deserves to live in fear.” “I think it’s great,” Riata Wendt, a junior, said, “It shows that not all bikers are bad guys with bad morals.” This group helps children who have been abused sexually, physically, and emotionally. When a child has been affected by abuse, BACA intervenes to help make the child feel safe and secure. There are four levels of intervention. During a level one intervention, the bikers will go on a run to the child’s house. The child’s parents or guardians are present to show the child that the club is there to help them. They are then given a patch, stickers and a photograph with their new biker family. During a level two intervention, several members will go to the child’s home to stand guard and help the child and their family feel safer when they are feeling their most vulnerable. At a level three intervention, a formal letter is written to the child’s abuser on the BACA letterhead to explain that BACA will use whatever means necessary to keep the child and their family safe from the abuser’s harm. “What they [BACA] are doing is something else. I would have never imagined bikers helping kids out like this,” Elaina Rovenstine, a junior, said. A level four intervention is only used when the first three have done nothing to discourage the presence of the abuser. BACA will ask for the general area of the abuser’s residence and go on a “Neighborhood Awareness Run” where they will go to each house in the neighborhood to hand out stickers to the local children and give their mission statement and tell the neighbors how they function. When the address of the predator becomes known to the bikers, they will immediately leave to avoid any type of confrontation. In addition to interventions, BACA members will make court appearances with the child to help them feel secure, helping them give accurate testimonies regarding their abuse. "The biker image is what makes this work," Rembrandt, Maricopa County Chapter President, told AZ Central, "Golfers against child abuse does not have the same feel. their elementary and middle school years. Unfortunately, once a student moves up to high school, the parents start backing away and the school administrators start trying to involve themselves more than the parents do. The mistake that most schools make is confusing parental duties with the duties of the school by watching over their students on-campus as well as off-campus. Since schools get so involved in their students’ lives, it gives their parents the impression that they can slack off with their responsibilities. Parents nowadays are getting so used to having the school deal with everything that they do not know what to do when the time comes along for them to have to start stepping up to the plate. For the six on-campus hours a day, students are the school’s responsibility. Anything that goes on within that time period has to be dealt with by the school, and in some circumstances, the parents are called in to help deal with it. But as soon as a student leaves the boundaries of the institution, they are no longer the school’s problem. They either go back to their parents so the parent can fulfill their duties as they should, or they go off on their own way. The school has no reason or right to try and carry out their duties once the school day has passed. If a student is caught drinking off campus, it should be dealt with by the parents of the kid or by the police. It is not necessary for the whole school board to get involved and punish the kid for a decision they made outside of school. The only reason it would be acceptable were if these decisions that the student decided to make involving drinking affected their school life. This is when the school should step up and get to the bottom of it. More specifically, if the student that was caught drinking was an athlete, the school’s natural inclination would be to penalize them and not let them participate in sports until further notice. This approach is unfair to not only the athlete but to the entire team, because they have just lost a player. If the decisions a student makes at parties or any other event outside of school does not affect their grades, school life, and sports life, then the school should have no right to get involved in the situation.
to spoon feed us. The administration officially says it is intolerant of bullying and other infractions of school policy on and off campus. But saying does not make it so. My friends and I occasionally notice our peers talking about how they plan to take drugs or go drinking after they leave class, yet the teachers do virtually nothing about it (they conveniently claim not to hear). It is not occurring on school grounds, but it is a prevalent problem and it should at least be reported to the administration. Public schools are a state institution, and protecting minors ERIKA SODERSTROM PREPARES dessert as from violence, bullying, and consumption of illegal substances, a practice including steroids, is their responsibility. This means theyrun before Thanksgiving. She makes Crème Brûlée and Carmel Pie. 4ERIKA SODERSTROM should investigate violations of these laws and enforce them. Their policies do apply to us, on or off campus. If companies or sports teams can penalize athletes or celebrity endorsers for drinking too much, taking drugs, or domestic abuse (with several major cases of this recently involving AZ Cardinal Jonathan Dwyer and Ravens running back Ray Rice) why cant the schools penalize us? Aren’t we told that school is our first priority job at this age? Sure, I doubt any of the students at Cactus Shadows have multi-million contacts on the line, but if it is clear from their behavior that the parents cannot discipline their children correctly, shouldn’t the administration step in? Some people will claim that this, along with the security cameras, will further the administration’s “Big Brother” image, but if these issues go unresolved for too long, students may resort to handling the situation themselves. Think about the worst case scenarios on the nightly news broadcast - the young adult suicides and school shootings with bullying cited as a common factor. About a year ago, a 14 year old girl and 12 year old girl in Florida were charged with aggravated stalking and harassing another girl on Facebook, leading her to commit suicide. One of the girl’s posts read “"Yes IK I bullied REBECCA and she killed her self but IDGAF." Of course, the school didn’t know about it until she turned up dead, but in a fairer world, it should not have to be this way.

With this number of Americans avoiding gluten and meat, the usual Thanksgiving meal has changed for much of the population. “Being a vegetarian on Thanksgiving just means more sides for me,” Amy Abel, a junior, said. A vegetarian substitute for the main meal, the turkey, could be tofurkey, a turkey flavored piece of tofu. For a less traditional substitute, there is also a vegan loaf maker, which is meat loaf without the meat. Start by choosing a protein, such as a nut or seed, and add vegetables, liquid, herbs, and some carbohydrates. For healthier options that will cut down on the buttery and fatty meals often on the dinner table around this season is to roast potatoes instead of mash them. Cut the potatoes in thirds, add your favorite blend of spices and a little bit of olive oil and it is also a flavorful option. Stuffing is also an item that can be unhealthy when gravy is added to the top of it. A warm salad could be a perfect fit instead. Using ingredients such as butternut squash, brussel sprouts, edamame beans, black beans, and garlic can create the perfect fall inspired warm salad. Along with turkey and family, Thanksgiving conjures images of the traditional pumpkin pie. “I think I miss pumpkin pie the most because of my allergies. It just tastes like fall,” Ferry said. While pumpkin pie may be a recognizable dessert option for thanksgiving, it is not the only option. “Well I only started celebrating Thanksgiving four years ago. I didn’t really like the idea of pumpkin pie so my mom made me chocolate pie,” Sofia Ripa, Cactus Shadows Alumni, said. "Pecan pie, ice cream, lemon bars, cookies, jello dish, cheesecake. The baked apple brûlée introduces a rich dessert to a tangy fruit. The peanut butter pumpkin pie adds an uncommon ingredient to the usual pumpkin dessert. Also, the peanut butter pumpkin pie is a healthy alternative to an otherwise fluffy pie. For those who dislike pumpkin or cannot eat pumpkin, there are also some unique alternatives including cinnamon filled apple cider floats, sweet potato cupcakes, and sweet caramelized apple spice cake. OLD-WEATHER hats have evolved beyond the classic beanie, and these newly recognized accessories are quickly joining the mix of the typical winter wear such as scarves, jackets, and
boots. Although beanies and fur hats are a usual popular choice for head wear in the winter, fedoras, wide brimmed hats, and floppy hats have become more popular recently. Seen being paired with many outfits such as flirty dresses, vests, and tights, or skinny jeans and oversized cowl neck sweaters, these hats are a versatile statement piece that will be seen being worn by people of all ages throughout the winter months. “I think they [hats] are a great fashion choice,” Evelyn Bencomo, a junior, said, “They look good with practically any outfit, even on crazy hair day, they help hide the craziness of your hair.” Fedora hats best suit heart-shaped faces and girls can add this hat to her particular outfit to give the look an occasional playful twist. The most common way to wear a fedora for women is casually. A popular outfit would be to pair this hat with a long tunic and black leggings, a jacket,
and an oversized scarf. For men, a fedora is best styled with a trench coat or long coat along with a nice dress shirt and dark jeans. According to Fashionbeans, a fedora will best suit men with shorter face shapes since the tapered crown of the hat gives the illusion of length.

“It was about creating the space that you want to be at. You know, instead of trying to make something that you think people want, you create something you want. I’m a cyclist, I’m an eater, and I’m a drinker of coffee and beer, then why would I not want to create a space that accommodates that?” Kaolin Cummens, owner of The Flat Tire Bikeshop, said. Back in the summer of this year, Cummens moved his business to the old C4 building. After settling into his new location, he called his old friend Jon Oughterson and asked him if he would like to use the old kitchen equipment and run the restaurant side of the shop. “We have a one-year-old daughter so we were really not planning on opening a restaurant at all, but, you know, the opportunity presented itself and we just couldn’t pass it up,” Lauren Oughterson, co-owner of Local Jonny’s said. Jon Oughterson used to worked at C4 and knew the space prior to opening his new cafe. The name “Local Jonny’s” draws inspiration from the famous bike shop “Mellow Johnny’s” based in Austin, Texas. “We thought we’d do a play on words and copy that a little bit, but we then we got worried it would be infringing on somebody else’s idea,” said Oughterson, “My husband’s name is Jonny so it kinda just fit and it was something we went with from the very beginning.” Although the cafe is connected to the Flat Tire Bike Shop and sticks with the biker theme, they are more than just a cafe in a bike shop. “A lot of people come in here just expecting us to be just a coffee shop that happens to be in a bike shop, nothing special, but we, Jon and I, each of us have spent over 10 years in the restaurant business. Just working in restaurants, coffee shops, and bars, we just want it to be great, we just happen to be in the bike shop,” Oughterson said, “We do want to follow the bike theme and there are a lot of cyclists who come in and visit on their morning rides and stop in and get breakfast or a beer, but we don’t want to just cater to them. We want to cater to the entire Cave Creek community.” Upon entering the cafe, the first thing a person might notice would be the smell of all the different drinks; the cinnamon from chai lattes to the scent of a classic, black coffee. Local Jonny’s serves Fire Creek coffee, a company originally based in Cave Creek that moved to Flagstaff. “The space has a very cool and laid back feel, a lot more bikes in the front than other coffee shops in Cave Creek which I think is perfect, it also gives it a more local feel,” Erika Solberg, a senior, said.

“Even though fedoras are really cool, I just prefer to wear beanies, they keep my head warm,” Elaina Rovenstine, a junior, said. Wide brimmed hats are fashioned similar to fedoras, best worn with a simple dress, and the addition of a long jacket or fur coat works nicely. A hat similar to a wide brimmed hat would be the “pork pie,” the type of hat Walter White wears in Breaking Bad. Fashionbeans states that a pork pie looks best casual clothes and is suited well to men with shorter faces. These hats are more popular among men, but some women have taken fancy to this style of hat as well. Floppy hats are usually worn in the spring and summer, but have recently transitioned to fall and winter fashions. It is fuzzy, it is warm and it feels so rocker glam, it is this fall’s biggest trend – the “faux” fur vest. One can slip on a gray faux fur vest and witness how it can turn a simple shirt and an ordinary pair of blue jeans into a fun, unique look that works for any occasion. “Fur vests are an absolutely fabulous statement piece that can make any outfit look trendy and stylish. I adore the way some people style them,” Zack Mattocks, a senior, said. This vest is a good layering piece, and it is also a nice statement item that will catch the attention of others without making one look overthe-top. "I think they are really unique and can liven up a lot of boring outfits," Sarah Nelson, a sophomore, said. While it may seem that fur vests are limited and only go with a few select items, they are surprisingly versatile, able to coordinate with almost any outfit that one may choose to wear. “I n terms of fur, it is a little sad that an animal has to be killed for it, but the vests can look cute on just the right person,” Cameron Bender, a math teacher, said. A fur vest can be paired with a midi skirt and a floppy hat for a boho look, monochromatic pieces for an elegant and classic look, leather pants for an edgy look, or a chunky sweater or a flannel and leggings for a casual weekend look. Since they are so "on-trend," these vests can be found pretty much anywhere. From stores like Forever 21 where vests are priced anywhere between $25 to $40 to higher end department stores like Nordstrom where people can find vests in the pricier range of $80 to $100, but one will not be able to walk in without spotting a fur vest.
SPUR CROSS TRAILS PROVIDE ENDLESS LOCAL EXPLORATIONS by NICOLE NERI staff writer

Now that Thanksgiving is over and everyone has stuffed themselves sufficiently, it is time to find a way to burn off the extra baggage. Spur Cross Conservation Area provides guided hikes year-round for hikers of every skill level. Spur Cross is 2,154 acres of untamed desert, split into five segments: Elephant Mountain Trail, Metate Trail, Spur Cross Trail, Tortuga Trail, and Towhee Trail. About 15 years ago, the area was set to be a developed area. The community, including Senator John McCain, rallied to keep the area DECEMBER 12, 2014
natural and wild. “Spur Cross is a really great example of people coming together to preserve something,” Michael Murphy, a parent and an avid hiker, said. The area has a rich history, containing several archaeological sites and petroglyphs from the ancient Hohokahm Native American tribe. A quick history lesson: in the 1000s, the Hohokahms occupied much of south-central Arizona. Sometime in the 1200s, they mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind elaborate ruins and scattered petroglyphs as the only clues to their existence. On December 20th, there will be a 2.5-mile
Hohokahm Houses hike, which takes hikers to one of the mesa-top compounds of the Hohokahm tribe to explore the ruins. Scattered throughout the area are detailed petroglyphs and bits of ancient Hohokahm pottery. “My sister and I go out to Spur Cross quite a bit and one time we took a different trail and we found pieces of ancient pottery we think,” Cydney Brabec, a senior, said. It is best to attempt this hike with the help of a guide, because the northern part of the trail can be difficult to follow. Park ranger Kevin Smith even leads moonlight hikes. The next one is scheduled for January 5th from 6:00-8:00 pm.
“The moonlight hikes are perfect during this time of year. I went on one a bit ago with my boyfriend and we both loved it, despite our lack of hiking endeavors,” Elle Stanley, a senior, said. Cave Creek runs through the Spur Cross area, allowing large trees and a variety of desert animals to thrive. “It’s so unusual in Arizona to be able to hike next to running water,” Murphy said, “It’s really exceptional to be able to experience creeks in the heart of the Sonoran.” Upcoming guided hikes, hike difficulty ratings, and trail details can be found on the Maricopa County website under the “Parks” tab. 15

Feverish disco dances into the `70s
It was the era of big hair, free living, and, most importantly, music. Progressive Rock, Disco/Dance, ~SHELBY NICHOLS Punk Rock, and Funk and Soul were the popular genres of the ’70s and evident through culture of the time. From bands such as the Bee Gees and K.C and the Sunshine Band to Pink Floyd and Rush with some Ramones and the Jackson 5, this era was bursting with music that reflected the culture. The era started off with glam rock and singers such as David Bowie and T-Rex. This type of music was very theatriLIFE cal with lyrics that had a futuristic tone and references to sex and drugs. “I know a big movie from the ’70s was Saturday Night Fever and that was based on disco. So you could say that the music affected the culture because what was popular in music was being relayed on popular media outlets,” Allie O’Connor, a senior, said. “If a movie like that were to come out today the music would be like pop and rap and all the current trending genres.” Disco is defined as a genre of dance music containing elements of funk, pop, and psychedelic soul music. It happened to be the next major fad after glam rock, lasting from the mid to late 70’s. This type of music is thought to be one of the most influential for it led to changes in social life, movies and

The word guitar comes from the Sanskrit word “tar” meaning string. The history of guitars can be traced back over 4,000 years. The earliest instrument similar to the guitar are tanburs or “bowl harps.” The lute or oud brought to Spain by The Moors was used in Renaissance times. Other guitars used in Renaissance times were the four-course and five-course guitar. The six-course guitar was added to Italy’s “guitar battente.” The first ever electric guitar that we know today was the Rickenbacker Electro “Frying Pan” made in 1931. Whether or not you are a Parks and Recreation fan, you will love “Galentine’s Day,” a holiday where ladies celebrate ladies. The idea was originated by the Parks and Recreation main character, Leslie Knope. This holiday is a day where single girls and taken girls unite to eat food, exchange presents, and show each other just how special they are. “I think this holiday is the best idea. People get so caught up in Valentines Day and trying to be loved by their significant other, and they forget all about the most important people in their lives; their girl friends,” Allie Jorde, a senior, said. Traditionally, this holiday is celebrated on February 13, just one day shy of Valentine’s Day. Here is how to put together your very own Galentine’s Day soiree: Step One: Decorate. Fill up the party space with white lights, candles, lanterns, and garlands. Go for more whimsical and girly decorations to give the guests the full affect. Step Two: Invite all your clos-

Town council faces recall Continued from page 1 Demands for a recall began when the council decided that there needed to be a change in administration and terminated the contract of former Cave Creek Town Manager, Usama Abujbarah, with a 4-3 vote.

Food to Fuel
SIERRA GALINDO researches what food is good for working out. CULTIVATING MUSCLE MASS
When trying to gain muscle mass, eat foods rich in cholesterol and omega vitamins. According to Men's Fitness, the cholesterol found in egg yolks make them a serious muscle building food.
WEIGHT TRAINING
Before any training, it is important to eat carbohydrates says Bodybuilder.com. Carbs are the body's preferred fuel source, eating foods like oats or sweet potatoes are best.
RUNNING
According to Fitness Magazine, it is good to eat some yogurt and trail mix before running. The yogurt is easy on the stomach and the nuts in the trail mix give your body a little burst of energy.

south on the Loop 101 and take a right on Highway 60. Savor the skyscrapers you see, the streetlights and the cars surrounding you. Savor now, savor the present. In an hour, you won’t be here anymore. As you drive towards your destination, far from the metro, the years slip away. When you see the large castle sticking out of the flat desert landscape like a sore thumb, you’ve made it. Secreted away here, like some jewel of the desert, is the Renaissance Festival. Deep in the heart of Arizona, amongst the saguaros and the heritage, lies a European transplant entirely unlike everything around it. Thirty-acres of soil foreign to both land and time. Think of the Renaissance Festival as a convention for the medieval times, minus all of the bloodshed and death that made the times so medieval. A true
American tribute, it’s full of heart, if not entirely historically accurate. Pirates walk side-byside with knights, wizards speak quietly to paladins, and the royal family parades down the middle of the path waving genially at the surrounding peasants. Those who attend are encouraged to dress in full Renaissance style, a raucous party where all are included in the merriment. The festival is a veritable medieval amusement park. The complex boasts thirteen stages, all with their own lineup of acts. There’s puppetry that will send one rolling in the aisles (the Ded Bob Sho), daring acrobatics that will leave one breathless (Barely Balanced and Dextre Tripp), raunchy comedy that will make one very uncomfortable they invited their mother along (the Tortuga Twins), unbelievable hypnotism (Franko), falconry, and a show dedicated exclusively to one man’s prowess with
whips, fittingly titled ‘The

Firewhip Show’. All of these are free to watch with admission, and run throughout the entire day. “I loved wathcing the Barely Balenced show, where acrobats perform risky stunts together.” said Haley Wehner, a senior. If one wants to test their temper and their arm, they can par-
ticipate in the “Vegetable Justice” stand, where a man standing in a cutout of a tomato yells insults at you (and your family) until he’s quieted with a well-placed fruit. Apart from the performances the festival also boasts several locations where attendees can watch modern-day professionals practice medieval craft, such as glass-blowing and smithing. If that doesn’t suit the prospective adventurer’s fantasy, one can also watch any one of several historical reenactors live a completely accurate life in their own small village. There’s also several jousts that occur throughout the day, each set in a large arena seating hundreds. If watching doesn’t suit one’s fancy, the festival offers no shortage of things to do. Activities are plentiful and cheap, with favorites like knifethrowing, axe-throwing, archery, rock climbing, crossbowshooting,
dart-throwing, and the
ladder appearing Spotlight Jacob’s every twenty or so feet. All of the games are played with March 2015 real weapons, and all are accompanied by a skillful practitioner who facilitates the flow of cash, offers witty banter, and will “show you how it’s done” if you’re not quite up to par. All are perfectly safe, and a fine way to get into the spirit of things. Then there’s the food. Lord, the food. “Steak on a stake,” turkey legs the size of a forearm, freshly-cooked pizzas, mouth-watering bread bowls and many, many more delicacies. Stands for fresh fruit, beef jerky, pickles and other snacks dot the streets, and purveyors of fine chocolates, cheesecakes, and other sweets yell at you from their shops. All the food is cheap, all the food is filling, and all the food is fattening. It’s not uncommon to leave the festival several pounds heavier than when
one arrived. If one is willing to lighten the coin purse, there’s also the Pleasure Feast, a multi-course feast lush with dishes and alcohol, but this is only for knights and damsels 21 and older. The Renaissance Festival also doubles as an “artisan marketplace,” meaning that some of the best craftsmen and women in the state stop by to show their wares. Authentic and handmade weapons, pottery, needlework, jewelry, chimes, pillows, banners and wands are for sale at reasonable prices, and they’re all of a high quality. The Renaissance Festival is a truly magical place. With something for everyone and no one excluded, it’s the perfect fit for people of all races and creeds, where one can feel loved, accepted, and a part of the magic. To many, it’s just a bunch of people lounging in costume, to others it’s a home away from home.

OPINION
TEACHER’S PET It is not uncommon for students to see and talk to their teachers every day. They have to, considering the teacher is the one who provide their education. Likewise, it is also not unusual that students will form a friendship with their teacher. When a personal issue begins to affect a student’s class work, if they are on good terms with their teacher, they may go to the teacher for assistance. At that point, they open up to the teacher about what is bothering them and the teacher gives advice. When they befriend a student, it makes them easier to talk to. In turn, they understand their students better, making learning more fun. If a student does not like the person who is teaching, they are going to have trouble enjoying what is being taught. While there is a fine line of teacher-student ethics, a teacher can give advice without getting too personal. If a student isn’t clicking with their counselor, a teacher is the next best thing. Sometimes, a teacher can be a person they tell things to. For example, if someone can not talk to their parents or friends, they can have their teacher as a last resort. Or if someone doesn’t have any friends and just needs advice, they still have this teacher to be there for them to offer a different perspective or experience. A friendship is a state of trust and mutual support. Teachers are there for students during important stages in their lives and it is nice to have an adult to connect with. Being a mentor to someone could be considered a onesided relationship, where they provided most of the support and the student merely receives it. Personally, I still talk to many of my old teachers and since my mother is a teacher, I see them on a regular basis. When a teacher has positively impacted a student’s life, it’s normal for the student to want to keep in contact with them. An example of showing a teacher support would be if they were injured or had surgery, some students band together and give their sympathies, gifts or organizing a fundraiser if there is an issue with money. If friendship is a mutual trust and support, then the student can provided the same support for the teacher as the teacher would the student. For instance, when Gus Angeli was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Mantle-Cell Lymphoma, so many of this students joined together to help sell wristbands and organize fundraisers to help Angeli pay for his necessary treatment. He supported his students when they had trouble with class work and possibly even personal problems, and in return the students supported him in his time of need.

FINDING THE HIDEAWAY by SIERRA GALINDO Life Editor

THE ROASTERY OF CAVE CREEK has been around since 2010 when
David Anderson broke away from the Cave Creek Coffee Company and the Firecreek Roastery. Anderson has been roasting organic beans for 15 years. He sells to Arizona restaurants and places such as Whole Foods.

South by Southwest’s up and comng band, and it was a great opportunity to help with their success as they started their southwest tour at the Roastery" said Hollis Johnson.
THE PROCESS
The Roastery only sells roasted coffee beans that originally start as an unprocessed green color. With all the equipment located in their store, they are able to roast the beans at temperatures starting from 410 degrees and up. “Beans have a spectrum of how they should be roasted,” said Anderson. “If the beans get too dark, they begin to develop a burnt taste. Almost similar to a lot of big chain companies out there.” Many of the beans ROCC receives are from Central America, South America, and from Africa. Once the beans are roasted, the orders for wholesale are completed and delivered at the end of the week. “For any locals looking to learn more about coffee, it’s fun to stop
in there while Dave or Michael, his long-term employee, are working. They will go over the entire process of roasting and you learn a lot. The roastery has the most welcoming environment,” Erika Solberg, senior, said.
STAY A WHILE “For any locals looking to learn more about coffee, it’s fun to stop in there while Dave or Michael, his long-term employee, are working. They teach you the entire process of roasting and you learn a lot. The roastery has the most welcoming environment,” Erika Solberg, senior, said. At the Anderson and Johnson household, the only beans found are from their roastery, and they often avoid retail coffee companies such as Starbucks. Whether buying wholesale or small packages of coffee for the house, the Roastery of Cave Creek is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 7003 E Cave Creek Rd.
Indigo Crow is a chic restaurant that the owners brought from Corrales, New Mexico to the Stagecoach Village in Cave Creek. The restaurant has a nice, rustic feel to it. The exterior is made of brick and wood, and the inside has two stories. On the second story, there is mezzanine seating, so guests can look out onto the restaurant. Some of the booths are in an “L” shape, with a brown leather for the seats and a black and white zebra-esque design on the back. Another great decoration is the sign, the Indigo Crow logo with white lettering and backlit by a deep blue light. All of the servers were attentive and nice, I was greeted at the door and directly taken to my seat. Everyone working there seemed genuinely happy to be there and were willing to answer any questions about the food or the menu. The menu includes a variety of salads, meats, poultry and fish, as well as flat bread platters. I had the sun dried tomato and capicola flat bread, which came with mozzarella cheese, sun dried tomatoes, onions, and basil. This was delicious and prepared just right. Other dishes on the menu include the “Rack of Lamb” lamb chops, which is made with a raspberry-chipotle glaze, caramelized baby carrots, and parmesan risotto; the baby greens salad which comes with cherry tomatoes, sliced onions, garlic butter croutons, parmesan cheese, pecans, and a citrus vinaigrette. What sets this restaurant apart from other bars and cafés in Cave Creek is that it's not just a sports bar. Indigo Crow is a more chic place with fancier meals, "exotic" cocktails and wine tasting. It’s a nice change from the typical biker or cowboy bars that surround Cave Creek. Don and Regina Raber, the owners of the Indigo Crow wanted to "create a meeting place for family and friends to gather and enjoy great food, wine and spirits” and I do believe they have succeeded. Sunday through Thursday, it is open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Saturday, hours are from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Happy Hour starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
