How paper is made
The paper in this book was once part of a tree, for most paper is made of wood.
A drum removes bark, and drops logs into a chipper.
Tiny slivers of wood are tossed into a vat of chemicals and left to soak.
The chemicals soften them,
bleach them, and make them stick together.
After a while there is a wet sticky mass inside the vat. This is paper pulp.
As the pulp flows in a thin layer over a fine mess, water drips out of it.
Carried along on a moving belt, it passes..
...between heavy warm rollers. They press out more water and make it dry. As soon as it’s dry,
...it’s paper.
