About S H Raza

Syed Haider Raza Alias S.H. Raza (born 22 February 1922) is an Indian artist who has lived and worked in France since 1950, but maintains strong ties with India. His works are mainly abstracts in oil or acrylic, with a very rich use of color, replete with icons from Indian cosmology as well as its philosophy. He was awarded the Padma Shri and Fellowship of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1981, Padma Bhushan in 2007,and Padma Vibhushan in 2013.He was conferred with the highest French civilian honour, the Commandeur de la Legion d'honneur (Legion of Honour) on July 14, 2015. A strong colourist this painting of raza resonates the passionate hot colours of india with all their symbolic, emotive value. the strong colours and geometic shapes in the paintings are no affilation with any school but pre-occupied with imminent energies. THE 'BINDU’ His trips to India, especially to caves of Ajanta - Ellora, followed by those to Benaras, Gujarat and Rajasthan, made him realize his role and study Indian culture more closely, the result was 'Bindu', which signified his rebirth as a painter. The Bindu came forth in 1980, and took his work deeper and brought in, his new-found Indian vision and Indian ethnography. One of the reasons he attributes to the origin of the 'Bindu', have been his elementary school teacher, who on finding him lacking adequate concentration, drew a dot on the blackboard and asked him to concentrate on it. "My work is my own inner experience and involvement with the mysteries of nature and form which is expressed in colour, line, space and light". - S H Raza In Architecture ‘simplicity’ of geometry and materiality is fully of inversions: masses which suddenly seem weightless, materials which dissolve into immaterially; structures which reverse load and support; rays of light which reveal the realm of shadows; solids turn out to be voids

The painting titled suryodaya is illuminated by the gentle heat of the morning sun that rises along its left edge.recalling the palette of burnt sienna. ochre and umber that raza turned to in the mid 1980s to evoke the heat and passions of india, creating an entire ‘cilmate of experience’ for his viewers. Using the bindu encased in a sqare of color depicting the five element of nature as the epicenter of the piece, raza once agian turns to the metaphor of bindu as bija or seed - the essence of all creation, the source of all life, and the site of fretilization and germination ! Composed of a sreies of plane, the sculpturl piese is a spatially dynamic structure that seemingly shifts in form depending on the viewer’s vantage point. it stand on a 2m x 2m base , each of the triangular units. Sculpture The sculpture is three seperate stone pieces and assembled at site. While largely an abstract interpretation, the disgn represents theindia ideology.

SUN

It is widely accepted that a cube is the symbol of the earth, this folded-up cude sculpture represents the world of existence in the form of an abstracted space . The ‘space’ is contained within the cude. when the sides are unfolded, the part of the painting are revealed, an 2-meter tall outdoor intallation in cross maidan, mumbai, india. The sculpture is bulit with local techniques, organizing the light, exhibited items and scenarios by gaps between planes.
