BIO Jeffrey Halstead, B.Sc Architecture, is a recent graduate from Ryerson University. Jeff has been primarily working as a designer for NORR architects in Toronto, working throughout the design process at various stages of development. His interests currently lie in computation in architecture via parametric modeling tools such as Bentley’s Generative Components and Rhino’s Grasshopper. He was a recent participant in the 2010 Biodynamic Structures conference in San Francisco, and in Barcelona last March as a Nonlinear Systems Biology workshop participant at Smart Geometry 2010. He will continue his studies at a graduate level focusing on computation in architecture and fabrication methodologies.

SYNOPSIS
Parametric Investigation into design and fabrication methods
PROJECT BRIEF
Using Grasshopper, a parametric modeling tool for Rhino 3D, this project sought to define certain construction parameters and provide a final template for laser cutting that could be instantaneously updated if material or product size changes were made. Through the use of parametric modeling, relationships can be formed not only within the model itself but also with the construction process. Because laser cutting has limitations relative to capabilities, parametric modeling allows the designer to configure the member sizing, connection details, the amount of members needed for structural rigidity and the overall form based on how big or detailed the laser cutter is capable of.

SYNOPSIS
A SEED Bank located in the New York Stock Exchange
PROJECT BRIEF
Situated in the NYSE building central to the financial district of manhattan, the New York Seed exchange facilitates the distribution and storage of the peoples seeds. Obtaining and holding on to a source of sustenance, the bank serves as a protected vault and with drawl center resembling the functionality of an early bank. Instead of money, people who hold an amount of seed can use the facility as a laboratory to expiriment with their seed and also have a place to grow their small crops. The three functions of the NYSE - storage, trading, and growing, help to mitigate the flow and exchange of seed between citizens.

SYNOPSIS
Inner city farming project
PROJECT BRIEF
This project grew from the idea of parasitism in the city. The side and in-between space of downtown buildings becomes an available void to build in. This project investigates a specific site condition in Toronto. The “Toronto Life Square” building was built to generate revenue through commercial signage and public amenities such as “Star Bucks” and an “AMC theater.” The idea of the project was to provide an additional public amenity with no corporate affiliation. By creating a parasitic relationship with the Toronto life square building, this installation would be provided with sufficient infrastructure to survive off of and would in turn provide the host with two beneficial functions; a visual contrast against the stark façade comprised of massive advertisements and a place to grow and provide food.
GC CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE
Patented rotating growing cylinders allow plants to grow anywhere because of their hydroponic watering system. GC construction sequence illustrate the relationships of its skeletal framing and configuration when moved. Combined, these two ideas form a parasitic garden, fastening itself to potential hosts by configuring its shape to suite the hosts geometry.

To make a prototype of an interactive sun shading device for the second floor studio space at the CCA
PROJECT BRIEF
As a second skin meant to mitigate light and heat from overhead skylights in the CCA architecture studios, a series of scales move both independently and in sequence of each other to open up portions of the skin to allow heat out and light in. This interactive model is a full scale section of the overall skin. Twenty four styrene scales operate in response to touch and ambient light.

Robotic Painting
PROJECT BRIEF
This project is an expirementation with reproduction techniques. The artwork is based through the generation of tool paths from a GRASSHOPPER image sampler. This allows the artist to update and generate new brush strokes that can be sent to robotic equipment to mimic and reproduce the artist’s intent. however, the precision of the tool path generated by the computer software and the spectrum of imperfections of the machinery, allow for an interesting varience in the finihsed product.

SYNOPSIS
Tower competition on “Flat Iron” Type Site in Dubai
PROJECT BRIEF
This residential complex is comprised of high end units typical of Dubai’s shoreline. The form of the tower is led by the property line of the project. The concept of the unit was to create a range of module units that could be optimally arranged in the tower. Being as it is a tower and it is situated in Dubai, the obvious key features are dense core and large terraces. The arrangement of the terraces and unit-modules aids in breaking down the otherwise flush facade.

Solar glass roof retains function of typical hammam roof while providing energy gain and visual connection with sky at night
PROJECT BRIEF
The “Peace Route Ramla” project entailed a revitalization process of major aspects of the historic portion of the city of Ramla. This project focuses on retrofitting the hammam and especially the reconstruction of the hammam’s main feature, the dome of the main water room. A special insulated patterned glazing unit maintains light levels throughout the day while distorting and bending direct sunlight.

PROJECT BRIEF
Our modern days have created street conditions that are not environmentally or pedestrian friendly. One common characteristic in such urban environments is the absence of natural elements such as daylight and sunlight, greenery and soft cover. As an attempt to reduce the tremendous negative influence of these environments on humans, we propose an urban umbrella to contribute in rain collection in dense downtown cores of metropolitan cities. The main principle behind the design is to eliminate water run-off while still retaining pedestrian friendly environment on the ground level. These umbrellas will also act as rain collectors that assist vegetation to growth over the streets.

PROJECT BRIEF
This project challenged the team to execute a case study for a fictitious client. The task was to conceptualize and present an urban conscious department store that was multi-functional, inviting and useful. Because the store has a focus on reclamation, the materials used would be comprised of wood, steel, glass and shipping containers as a building module. The containers would function as gallery spaces and smaller clothing displays.

PROJECT BRIEF
This workshop introduced dynamic living systems for the development of novel computational design tools and material systems. Generative design techniques emerge with references to natural systems, not as mimicry but as trans-disciplinary translation of flexibility, adaptation and complexity. This approach examines the nature of nonlinear, emergent properties and loosely coupled modules. Through the analysis of biological design problems in specialized 3D designer micro environments, we were exposed to new modes of thinking through an understanding of how dynamic and environmental feedback specifies structure, function and form.

Investigation into the possible reciprocity between a greenhouse and its urban context.
PROJECT BRIEF
Parametric Investigation into the possible reciprocity between a greenhouse and its urban context. An interface that could mitigate the growth cycles of plants on the interior of the project through an awareness of the climatic conditions and the specific stage of growth individual plants are in. This dynamic condition would be achieved through light and heat gains and loss controlled through ETFE cushions implanted with a relaxation function and an inner screen to control direct light gains.
