Mobius House

UN Studio 1998 , Het Gooi , Netherland “A house that would be acknowledged as a reference for the renovation of the architectural language

Main concept : A continuous and fluid circulation between social place, private place, and path of movement.

Program : two studios two bedrooms one meeting room one living room one verandah one kitchen one gararge one storage

Material

Glass - transparency The glass is used on north and south facade, featuring the transparency and reflectivity.

Alternating materials Glass and concrete, overlap each other and change the positions in the building. The lightness of glass and the density of concrete are continuously being juxtaposed and syncopated in alternating roles, creating a dynamic sequence of enclosure and exposure.

Concrete - solidity Concrete is used on masses, roofs and some interior furnitures, expressing solidity and density.

Curtain wall Creating the relationship between interior and exterior, natural and artificial.

In the daytime, the curtain wall reflects the surrounding forests on the south facade, tracing texture and color onto the surface and visually dissolving the form into the landscape.

When the interior is illuminated from within at night, the space is visually contained and isolated in contrast to the darkness of the landscape.

Enclosure / Private

There are four types of spaces in Mobius house, which are defineded by the proportion of materials. From the concrete mass to the space with glass outershell, the transparency increases and the privacy decreaces.

Conceptual Model Model A Four types of spaces in differnet proportion of the glass and concrete.

Model B Using concrete and glass to construct a series of masses. We can some overlapped spaces in different materials.

Model C

The form is desided by circulations, which are haphazardly lining in space and sometimes overlap each other.

Model D

Alike to model C, using vertical components to surround and divide different spaces.

Model E Start to put in some planes in small pieces.

Model F Construct a complete model with circulations and masses as a prototype of the final model.

Final Model

Stack the masses in different height, trying to mix a sequence of spaces in a group.

As the mass moves foward or backward; upward or downward, the group shows a interesting rythemin the space.

Some spaces are constructed with double layer of walls, providing appropriate privacy and transparency.

The masses are connected by a indirect route in center, which is covered with glass outershell and also serve as a path.

On the south facade, we can see the masses in different materials stacking closely, which strikes a great balance in the space.

CASE STUDY STAGE 3

Modeling

concept model A Utilizing four groups of folded plates to create twisted spaces and masses.

Making folded plates ups and downs to divide each spaces.

METAL × MUSIC Canon , For Alice , Pomp and Circumstance Marches

Original music Canon A harmonious music that can virtually soothe our weary minds.

Stacking Music I choose some sections from each music to mix into a new music, and try to overlap each part on them to create an effect that sounds like lots of music playing at the same time.

Pomp and Circumstance Marches

The march No.1 is featured for the encouraging sections of music

c.

For Alice A masterpiece composed by Beethoven.

concept model B

Use aluminum as frame and iron net as planes. By overlapping net can we create special visual effects while viewing from the top.

concept model D As the Aluminum sheet goes up and down, an interesting wavy space is yielded.

Using two materials with different transparencies on each facades to create spaces.

concept model C

Model

Overlap the aluminum and net to alter the transparency of the originals visually.

Stack the materials in numerous layers to emphasize the visual effect when viewing from the top.

Extend the model in horizontal axis and vertical axis.
