Aeroponic Vertical Urban Farm

Unity Square

Location | Castleberry Hill, Atlanta, GA

Professor | Gustavo Do Amaral

Year | Fall 2024

The Castleberry Hill Mixed-Use Complex is a forwardthinking project designed to enhance community stability and inclusive while preserving the historic identity of the Castleberry Hill neighborhood in Atlanta. Inspired by the area’s industrial legacy and vibrant arts culture, the project integrates mixed-use programming, including familyoriented housing, community spaces and sustainable storm water management strategies.

This design prioritizes afford-ability, accessibility, and environmental sustainability. By blending modern interventions with Castleberry Hill’s historical architectural language, this project bridges the past and the future.

Project Development

Main drive for the building purpose is to create a space for community and let people gather into one space. Through the demographics of Atlanta and Castleberry Hill, it shows that a space was need to bring community. Another drive is the views the site is able to create, considering that there is art and the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Massing Iterations

Massing development was used to understand how the building would be affected in three dimensional. Considering topography, site context (weather and sun) and how people would navigate around the site. These constraints help develop the site plan and how the building will respond to nature.

Section

Lower level is parking garage for residents and visitors. Above that is the Plaza level, where the main commercial area is at, allowing people to come visit the building without disturbing the residents on the upper level. Residents level are given balcony that face the plaza to create a connection with visitors and other residents.

LEGEND

Fragment of Elevation and Section

When responding to the elements, bi-folds and operable windows were added to the building to allow residents to control how much natural sunlight would be allowed into their units and allowing natural ventilation the units. Upper level creates an over hang to shade the commercial areas for visitors and residents.

Alley Art Center

Location | Kansas City, MO

Professor | Bryan Gross Year | Spring 2024

Cultural precincts, containing art centers and performing arts venues in cities play a significant social and cultural role, bringing vitality to urban life and educating their citizens. Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District is already such a place, with art galleries, First-Friday events, a diverse restaurant scene, and state-of-the-art performing arts center in its Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

There are large venues that hold large capacities but does not accommodated smaller more experimental acts for smaller audiences. Therefore a smaller companion performing arts center is needed to accommodate smaller acts that provide more intimate and experimental performances.

SITE DEVELOPMENT

The goal of the project was to help developed the east side of the Crossroads and to become a landmark to encourage more development. Similar to the T-Mobile Center and the Kansas City Star, the Alley Art Center wanted to be its own but be part of local people’s life.

OUTDOOR SPACE

Outdoor space was developed in front of the building to provide landscaping into the east side of the crossroads. Building also provides shading to allow outdoor performances and seating are provided for everyday uses from the locals or visitors.

WALL DETAILS

Details were created to help understand how the metal facade is connected to the spaces inside its shell. This details also show the relationship between in the inside and outside of the building and helps understand the heights and widths that structure creates.

FACADE

The facade was created to help local artist have a canvas to paint on and help support their art. The metal facade acts as a sheet revealing the art under it. Keeping the metal simply, it helps highlight the art.

OVERALL

Alley Art Center goal was to be a landmark to the evolving landscape of the Crossroads and provides urban spaces to the public and allow artist and performance a place to grow and produce movement to the East side of the Crossroads.

Film Row Arts Center

Location | Kansas City, MO

Professor | Marianne Remboldt Year | Spring 2023

The arts center building is located in the heart of Kansas City’s Arts District. Surrounding buildings are the historical building of Kansas City’s Film Row and new modern buildings that are bringing people to the Arts District.

The purpose of the building is to allow people to learn about the past and future of the Arts District and Film Row while providing classes and workshops to the public.

SITE DEVELOPMENT

Establish a division between public and private areas on the site. This division influenced how the programs would be layout and where the building would sit on the site. It would also decide how the building’s floor plan would be layout.

25ft.50ft. 100ft.

1 | MASS

Simple mass of building.

2 | ALIGN MASS

Mass is angled to align with topography of site.

5 |ENCLOSED SPACE

Mass is pulled to create an enclosed spaces.

6 | CREATE SECOND LEVEL

Private and connection space is raised to create views.

3 | DIVIDE MASS

Mass is divided to create a public and private space.

7 | EXTRUDE MASS

Second floor is extruded to create additional rooms.

4 | MAKE CONNECTION

Create an indoor space to connect both main spaces.

8 | PULL ROOF

Creating openings to allow daylight into the private and main public space.

FACADE

The choice was in favor of representing theaters’ red curtains. The facade acts as louvers and helps control sunlight entering the building. It works as a way to determine which rooms need more sunlight.

Private Rooms - Closed

FACADE INFLUENCE

Many rooms, like the mechanical room, require little to no sunlight in the rooms; as only employees are allowed to enter those rooms. However, public spaces or offices need sunlight to provide a warm and welcoming aura to the public.

Aeroponic Vertical Urban Farm

Location | Kansas City, KS

Professor | Todd Achelpohl

Year | Fall 2022

Vertical Urban Farm is located in Downtown Kansas City, Kansas in the parking lot of the Merc Co+op store. The Merco is a local store that brings in fresh produce from around the area to the Downtown community.

The goal of the project is to provide fresh and local produce to the community year-round for areas that are in “food deserts”. This project would encourage more urban groceries, farmers’ markets, and other programs to be developed to help diminish “food deserts”.

SITE PLAN

Plan follows a linear organization, from the bay area in the west to the community park to the east, that goes from private spaces into public spaces. This idea of private spaces turning into public spaces mirrors the floor plan.
