Just a Navigator I was cornered the other day and asked again firstly does hypnotherapy really work? And the next question what percentage of people will it work for? My short answer - It does if you want it to and doesn't if you don't want it to. However without explaining everything that happens in hypnotherapy I will now try to keep an explanation relatively simple. Firstly the hypnotic trance isn't a "Thing" It is a normal state of mind. We each experience it every day when waking or falling asleep. The only aspect of it that makes it a "Thing" is the role play interaction between the hypnotist and his subject. Secondly all hypnosis is self hypnosis. It is you that makes the changes to your behaviour, your lifestyle, your habits, your relationships, your attitude. As a hypnotherapist I simply guide you. You are driving the car - I am the Navigator. A successful outcome from hypnotherapy is ultimately down to you wanting to change. The same is true for other forms of therapy. Thirdly it really shouldn’t be thought of as a “Thing” – it is a therapy and therapy can go in different directions. For example, your reasons for eating the wrong food may be as simple as a bad habit or there could be deep seated emotional reason that became deeply anchored in your subconscious early in life. Trying to rationalise this consciously often doesn’t give you any answers or a solution I am a Therapist - I am helping you to change your perspective - a typical example is helping you to see things in a more positive light so that you think and act more positively going forward rather than negatively or in a self-defeating way. All of the thoughts that you have are completely your own. If I make a suggestion you will decide to accept or reject any suggestion or idea based on your own belief system. You will never do anything suggested to you that you aren't up for. As an example, If you are a smoker and have no intention or inclination to give up smoking then it is difficult to see how I can help you. You have to be ready to give up. I could possibly help you with your perspective and that might lead you into a contemplative state where you start to think about giving up. A few weeks later you may be ready to come back for a stop smoking session but you will generally have tried to stop on your own and have failed. Do not expect to go to a hypnotherapist to have your intentions or your motivation fundamentally changed - go to a hypnotherapist if you are ready to change but are struggling with how to change. With regards to the percentage success rate. If you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve, have tried to do it on your own and failed. You may find yourself repeatedly failing and unable to change despite consciously wanting desperately to do so. You are ready for therapy and there is no reason why it shouldn't be 100% effective. However be wary of any Hypnotherapist claiming a 100% success rate they certainly couldn't advertise that - the ASA would fine them for the privilege.
