Worn by the pilots and aircrew in the South Pacific who fought bravely from 1942 to 1945, the Black Eagle USN Flight Jacket became a staple of the squadron. The squadron kept their jacket handy even during the warmer months of the Pacific. Some modified their leather jackets by removing the fur collars and adorning them with hand painted nose art on the back, with flags symbolizing downed enemy aircraft and bombs indicating the number of missions the crew endured.

The B-6 short sheared sheepskin flight jacket was first introduced in 1939 and used extensively in the Army Air Force training command when pilots flew open cockpit training planes but needed a lightweight jacket for ease of movement. The precursor to the famed G-1, and J-1 flight jackets, the USN 371-J-1 was the first USN jacket issued to pilots as early as the 1920s, and into the 30s. Generally constructed of khaki cotton twill, or olive tinted Bedford cord cotton, navy pilots wore these jackets in open cockpit aircraft during the earliest days of the aircraft carrier.
