Welcome
Welcome Throughout 45 years, the Jefferson Awards Foundation has celebrated 60,000 grassroots unsung heroes and trained over 20,000 young people to become service leaders in their own communities.
Welcome to the 45th annual Jefferson Awards National Ceremony! In 1972, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard joined forces to increase service in America through the power of celebration. We’ve been multiplying good ever since. Each year, the Jefferson Awards Foundation (JAF) gathers national leaders and local unsung heroes in our nation’s capital to honor their outstanding public service – amplifying their work and inspiring others to act. Our National Ceremony is one of the most important ways we uphold our mission of powering others to have maximum impact on the things they care about most. Over the last 45 years, our Champions and Media Partners have honored over 60,000 unsung heroes with Jefferson Awards. In addition, we have trained over 20,000 young people to become service leaders in their own communities – putting them on the path to college and career success. This milestone comes at a unique moment in our nation’s history, and uniting together in service feels more important than ever before. Thank you for joining us at this year’s milestone celebration.

PATRISSE CULLORS, ALCIA GARZA, & OPAL TOMETI OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE 35 YEARS OR YOUNGER Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi co-founded the Black Lives Matter network, a globally recognized organizing project that focuses on combatting anti-Black state sanctioned violence and the oppression of all Black people. Patrisse Cullors is an artist, organizer, and freedom fighter from Los Angeles, CA. A self-described wife of Harriet Tubman, Patrisse has always been traveling on the path to freedom. Growing up with several of her loved ones experiencing incarceration and brutality at the hands of the state and coming out as queer at an early age, she has since worked tirelessly promoting law enforcement accountability across the world while focusing on addressing trauma and building on the resilience and health of the communities most affected. Alicia Garza is an Oakland-based organizer, writer, public speaker and freedom dreamer who is currently the Special Projects Director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the nation’s leading voice for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States. Opal Tometi is a New York based Nigerian-American writer, strategist and community organizer. She is credited with creating the online platforms and initiating the social media strategy during the early days of #BlackLivesMatter. like any other college student. However, unlike the rest of his classmates, Bloom makes daily decisions involving sewer projects and sidewalk renovations. He was elected to serve on the Houtzdale City Council at age 18. To get elected, Bloom needed to run a write-in campaign. When he isn’t busy doing his school work, or participating in the local Lions Club, he sets aside 3 days per week to listen to residents and their concerns. Bloom hopes his young age will provide a fresh look in solving problems. His current project is fixing up the sidewalks along a busy downtown intersection that hosts annual holiday parades.
RICHARD BOEHM WJAR – PROVIDENCE, RI Richard comes from a family of fundraisers and volunteers. He started at age 5, helping his parents stuff envelopes for the Leukemia Society of Rhode Island (SORI) where they were founding members. His own service started on a dare at age 18, by participating in the Penguin Plunge, benefiting SORI. Over thirty years later, he’s still a supporter. In 2007, he started the Boehm Dinner/Comedy Show to benefit SORI. The event raised over $24,000 last year alone. To date, he has raised over $100,000 in support of the athletes of SORI and over $225,000 in total charitable giving. Boehm is a Battalion Chief/Training and Safety Officer for the Johnston Fire Department. DOROTHEA BONGIOVI NJ ADVANCE MEDIA – NJ STATE PARTNER Dorothea Bongiovi is the visionary behind JBJ Soul Kitchen, a community restaurant that empowers individuals by providing volunteer opportunities in exchange for a dining certificate and job training. With the motto, "All are welcome at our table," the JBJ Soul Kitchen embraces customers and volunteers from all over the world to sit together and contribute towards one common goal: spreading hope through humanity. Since its inception in 2011, over 50,000 meals have been served and 7,500+ volunteer hours have been provided. With great wisdom, moral strength, and determination, Dorothea brings people together to offer a hand up to those who need it most. JIM CAPPUCCIO WXOW – LA CROSSE, WI As an adaptive physical education teacher, Jim has changed the La Crosse
community by empowering students with special needs. He saw that special needs students enjoyed and benefited from physical activity, and he believed they’d benefit from being part of a team. That inspired him to develop the Adaptive Sports League in 2012, leading three other schools to start their own adaptive sports teams. Today, the schools have over 70 athletes competing in adaptive soccer, floor hockey, and baseball. Cappuccio also volunteers with adaptive swimming and skiing events in his community. Jim doesn’t just teach students how to play, he teaches them to believe in themselves.
MARY JEAN DEHNE THE FORUM – FARGO, ND She’s known to her students simply as Mama Dehne. A teacher “by both trade and passion,” Mary Jean has dedicated her life to ensuring her students succeed. In 2011, several students expressed fear that they wouldn’t be able to graduate without after school resources. Mama Dehne decided to take a leap of faith and left her job to form the Legacy Children’s Foundation. Her organization now supports over 50 students by offering homework tutoring, literacy exercises, music and art, and community service. Dehne has raised over $225,000 for the organization. “I am so blessed to be where I am now in my life,” a former student says. “I have become a confident, motivated and talented person. If Legacy never existed I think I would have given up on myself and that is scary.” DR. PATRICIA DERGES KOLR – SPRINGFIELD, MO For years Dr. Derges ran a successful candle company. Once she raised her eight children, she took on a new challenge – becoming a doctor in her ‘50’s. While in medical school, one of her first patients changed her life. When Derges told him he needed to have a tooth removed, he responded that he would pull it himself with pliers, because he couldn’t afford proper care. His words put her on a mission. That’s why she founded "Lift Up Springfield," a clinic that provides affordable medical, dental, and mental health care. "If you need help,” Derges says, “you come into our doors.” Every service is provided by volunteers. Service costs $5 a visit, but there is no charge if patients are unable to afford it. Donations keep the doors open and there are no requirements to come to the clinic. SUZY DEYOUNG ROTARY CLUB OF CINCINNATI, CINCINNATI ENQUIRER & WKRC-TV, LOCAL 12 – CINCINNATI, OH Nearly 20% of Cincinnati families face food insecurity while over 30% of food in the U.S. is wasted. Suzy sought to
address both issues when she founded La Soupe in 2013. Her mission is to “rescue” food to make nutritious soups for those in need. Local partners donate up to 1,000 pounds of produce each day that would otherwise be wasted, and over 400 volunteers make soup and distribute it throughout the community. Last year, the organization made over 100,000 meals and donated 38,560 pounds of fresh produce. 20 • Jefferson Awards Foundation

BRAD GOETZ KCRG-TV9 – CEDAR RAPIDS, IA Friends describe Brad Goetz as “the kind of guy that will not only give you the shirt off his back, but buy you a new shirt and some shoes, in case you need them, out of his own pocket.” His generous spirit has graced his hometown of Tipton, IA ever since taking over his family’s grocery store. Brad says his job at the store and his volunteerism go hand in hand. "It's kind of emerged,” he says. “I almost think it’s part of my job at the store to help out the community." Brad volunteers behind the scenes for his alma mater at the Tipton High School Theatre Department, where he teaches students about lights, sound, set building, and other technical aspects for the productions. He also volunteers at band and choir events, track and swim meets, and with numerous organizations across town. CHERYL GOETZ KSBW – SALINAS, CA Cheryl is one of the few tough enough to battle fires and floods, protecting thousands of acres of land throughout her three decades of service as a volunteer fire fighter. After joining the local volunteer fire brigade in Palo Colorado Canyon on the Big Sur coast, she found a gaggle of poorly trained personnel with cast off and cobbled together fire apparatus, little safety equipment, and antique tools. Goetz implemented new bylaws, policies, and procedures, and wrote grants for new equipment – raising millions of dollars to transform her brigade. During emergencies, she has been known to work for days on the fire lines without sleep to save lives and protect homes. Afterwards, she helps families with temporary housing, organizes donation drives, and gives out goods to disaster victims. TOM HANLEY WRTV – INDIANAPOLIS, IN As an elite-level track cyclist at Marion University, Tom won national
championships and was on a law school track. Then his life changed forever. Hanley and his wedding party were on a bus heading to their reception when the driver ran a red light. The bus turned on its side, and Hanley suffered two broken vertebrae and a traumatic brain injury. His best friend did not survive. Upon recovery, Hanley was determined to find a new path. He founded Nine13sports, an organization that provides kids the opportunity to ride bikes in PE classes across Indiana, Portland, OR, and Minneapolis, MN. Their programming features stationary bicycles with screens that allow kids to feel the resistance of going uphill and the thrill of downhills. In 2016, the organ organization impacted over 10,000 kids.
MIKE HANNIGAN & SEAN MARX CBS5 AND KCBS-AM RADIO – SAN FRANCISCO, CA Twenty-five years ago, Mike and Sean were selling copiers when they became inspired by the actor Paul Newman. “We felt that we could do what we were doing in corporate America, but add what Paul Newman’s company was doing with donating the profits to the community,” Marx says. They formed Give Something Back Office Supplies in Oakland at the forefront of the socially responsible business movement. Their concept was to sell office supplies and furniture, and give the profits to non-profits. Over the past 25 years, they have expanded their business from the Bay Area across the western U.S., donating 73% of their net earnings – more than $6.3 million – to non-profits chosen by their clients. DAWN HEIDEMAN WBNS-TV – COLUMBUS, OH In April 2015, the mother of one of Dawn’s students was murdered while driving her daughters to school. This motivated Dawn to start a special class to help those who have suffered from severe trauma, including violence, homelessness, abuse, and extreme poverty. Her goal was to offer encouragement, empowerment, and inspiration. Her program, Be The One, pushes students to stay in school, graduate, and make good choices. The class has grown to 66 students, all who participate in service projects in the community, ensuring they know they have the power to change lives. Dawn donates her own time and money to provide uniforms and supplies to those who need them. Her efforts are paying off; her students are improving their grades and attendance. JOHN HENNINGSEN WQOW NEWS 18 – EAU CLAIRE, WI Across Barron county, 1 in 5 people lack access to affordable
health care. John, a retired physician from Rice Lake, is working to change that. The Rice Lake Area Free Clinic opened its doors in 2010 to those without affordable insurance. He is also a founding member of the clinic who serves on the board. In helping others, Henningsen has found his purpose. This calling has taken him on medical missions around the globe, traveling to Russia, Kazakhstan, Africa, the Himalayas, Belize and the Caribbean to provide free medical care and education. He has also helped establish an AIDS educational center in Tanzania, and supervised over 20 residents and students on a humanitarian trip to India. 21

BILL HRNCIR LAREDO MORNING TIMES – LAREDO, TX In 2006, Bill suffered a stroke and was told he would never walk or talk again, but that hasn’t stopped him. Putting himself on a strict regimen of physical and speech therapy, Bill has made over 50 public appearances to bring awareness about strokes, becoming one of Laredo’s staunchest advocates for the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and support of stroke victims. In September 2012, Bill and his wife, Dee Dee, formed the Laredo Stroke Support Group to provide meaningful group encouragement and local networking support that matches survivors with the most appropriate caregivers and therapists. The organization provides necessary therapy services free of cost to local stroke survivors. He has said that the most important part of recovery is to be a survivor, not a victim. JAMES JARRETT WDTV – BRIDGEPORT, WV In 1965 James moved to Shinnston, WV to begin his career at Pfizer. He
soon joined the local fire department as a way to fit in and support his new community. His drive for perfection would cause waves of change in the department, causing a ripple effect throughout Harrison County and across the state. Jarrett, along with another firefighter, invented the first firefighter breathing apparatus in the area. The “Farrett” could be attached to a fire coat when entering structures, protecting first responders, enabling them to fight fires from the inside. Jarrett has dedicated over 30 years to the Shinnston FD, 18 years to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and 10 years to the Harrison County Health Department Board of Health. He has continually improved and modernized life-saving systems and procedures.

From biomedical services to disaster recovery efforts, he has responded to hundreds of local crises. In the last year alone, he worked 932 hours and was on call for 5,964 hours – averaging out to 3.7 hours every single day of the year, including nights, weekends, and holidays, because there are no days off in the world of disaster. He founded K-Tech Charities, which has since raised over $800,000 to benefit his community. For the past 15 years, K-Tech has collected and distributed baskets of food for the holidays, last year distributing over 4,000 baskets to families in need. K-Tech also manages the Pink Ribbon Open, a fundraiser which has raised over $350,000 for local women going through breast cancer treatment. He says, "Don't ever sell yourself short by saying, I am just one person. If you have a group of people together, you're pretty powerful." YANA KHASHPER WHEC – ROCHESTER, NY During her recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, Yana discovered
her love of the outdoors and founded ROCovery Fitness, a peer-driven, peer-led organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for those in recovery. As co-founder, Yana has touched the lives of countless individuals and their family members. While Rochester, NY fights the heroin epidemic, she is the light that shows recovery is possible. The organization is currently building NY State’s first sober, active community center to support healing and recovery by providing a sober place for those seeking safety and fun. Yana has connected people of all ages to the idea that sobriety can be worthwhile, showing just how much sober life has to offer. “We are more than our disease,” she says. “We are the faces of recovery."
JERRY KNIGHT KCWY-TV NEWS 13 – CASPER & CHEYENNE, WY Jerry Knight saw a need for faith-based guidance for
fatherless boys in his community, so he decided to take action. He founded Pop In The Shop in his garage, which teaches fatherless young men ages 7-17 how to build classic cars from the ground up. The organization then sells the cars and uses the proceeds to fix up the next classic car project. Always looking for an opportunity to serve the community with their skills, they have given fixed up cars to single mothers and done oil changes for needy members in their community. Knight’s determination to provide mentorship comes from his desire to offer guidance to those who need it, setting young men on the path to brighter futures.

ROY LOPEZ KBTX – BRYAN & COLLEGE STATION, TX Roy always takes life by the horns. It's a philosophy he shares with others as a senior academic advisor and recruiter at Texas A&M, where he helps students navigate the application and aid process. Lopez graduated from A&M in 1982. A son of Mexican immigrants, he didn't always see himself as belonging on the Aggie campus. It’s now his mission to ensure all students feel welcome. Roy searches not only for the most accomplished students, but also those who believe they have no hope. 25 years ago, Lopez and his dad created what's now a staple in downtown Bryan, Fiestas Patrias Mexicanas. The event draws thousands and raises scholarship money for students. JUDY MALLORY FOX 42 KPTM – OMAHA, NE Too often the arts are overlooked, underfunded, and undervalued. Judy is
dedicating her life to changing that. As ED of Arts for All, Mallory offers accessible and affordable classes in dance, music, acting, and art. “Within every one of us there is a little creative spark,” Mallory says, which is why it’s her mission to ensure all kids can access their own creativity. To expand arts programs, Arts for All has partnered with churches, businesses, and organizations throughout the community. Mallory has been a pillar of strength throughout her eleven years with the organization, despite facing tremendous hardship with a cancer diagnosis and other health issues. Yet Mallory’s passion for art has kept her going and her community buzzing with the sights and sounds of artistic self-expression.
MIKE MARTIN THE TOLEDO BLADE, BUCKEYE CABLE & WTVG – TOLEDO, OH As a child, Mike suffered severe polio that left him partially disabled on his left side and right leg, but it never affected his generous spirit. Mike volunteers at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where he is one of the few male certified coddlers for babies, most of whom are born prematurely. He is called upon at all hours of the day to calm and comfort them, until they fall asleep. Martin can also be seen roaming the halls with a large stuffed cat named Sylvester, his sidekick for 20 years. He started bringing Sylvester to cheer up the hospital staff, and it worked. He frequently left the stuffed animal on a gurney during a break, and came back to find him with new medical care, such as an oxygen mask over the cat’s face – a symbol of the care Martin provides. KEVIN MCNAIR PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, PITTSBURGH, PA Kevin co-founded 1 Nation Mentoring with the goal of helping young African-American men learn to see greatness in themselves with strong, positive role models. He was raised by a single mother and says, “I didn’t have any positive male role models. I made some bad mistakes. I stressed my family out while finding out who I was.” Attending college opened up his sense of possibility. That experience inspired him to teach young men how to overcome adversity, motivating them to embrace responsibility and transition into adulthood. He teaches them how to share their stories, improve grades, and give back to their communities. 1 Nation Mentoring’s motto is "Think great, Act great, Be great," and Kevin couldn’t be a better example. RANDY MILLS WDRB-TV – LOUISVILLE, KY Randy is the director of the Louisville Rowing Club’s Adaptive Rowing program, which seeks to bring rowing to those requiring specialized coaching or equipment. Now she develops and runs the school field trips, nature day camps and Arts programs, and manages marketing and volunteers. Nevarez has also helped with two levy campaigns for the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Allen, Auglaize and Hardin Counties. He says his motivation to give back is to see the smiles on the faces he helps. Because of his leadership and fundraising success, other children now have the same life changing opportunity to attend camp as Eric did. RHONDA ROGERS WPTV NEWSCHANNEL 5 – WEST PALM BEACH, FL As Director of Community Engagement at Prime Time Palm Beach County, Rhonda administers out-of-school educational programs for low-income youth, ranging from performing arts to engineering. The organization also offers counseling to help young people through difficult times. A champion of women and girls, she plans activities and workshops to guide young women's career and personal development. In addition, she engages with numerous community organizations. Rhonda encourages all people to volunteer by choosing something they like to do and sharing it with others. Her story proves why that’s such good advice. FELISHA RUEHMER WJBF – AUGUSTA, GA When Felisha got her cosmetology license in February 2016, she wanted to do more than cut hair, she wanted to cut down on the amount of people in dire need. She noticed that homeless people didn’t look others in the eye. Her mission was to offer them a sense of pride and the chance to hold their heads high by offering free haircuts. This effort inspired the name for Ruehmer’s now thriving mobile ministry called “Walking Tall.” In a little over a year, Felisha and her family have taken “Walking Tall” to 16 states and 27 major cities across the country. Over 1,000 people have benefited so far. Ruehmer’s reasons for doing this are simple: to help others with her unique skills. JENNIFER SAPP WFXL – ALBANY, GA Jennifer is the Founder of the Challenger League, a non-profit that strives to
enhance the lives of children with developmental disabilities and their families by focusing on their abilities, not their disabilities. It’s the first baseball league in the area designed for kids with special needs. After the League was founded in 2015, twenty-five families – from five different counties – registered within the first two weeks. Twenty-seven “buddies” volunteered to help at games and practices, allowing the parents to sit back and enjoy watching their children play ball. The Challenger League now offers more than 10 different activities, with 150 buddy volunteers and over 200 families participating.
DEE STURGEON KMEG & KPTH – SIOUX CITY, SD Every morning, West Middle School Teacher's aide Dee is one of the first people to arrive at work. Often there by 6:15AM, she looks forward to assisting students and building meaningful relationships with them. That passion has guided her to contribute throughout her community. Sturgeon has volunteered for Relay for Life for over 25 years, and she has served as a Special Olympics coach for over 30 years. Despite fighting her own personal battle with cancer in the past, she has remained dedicated to kids with special needs and lifting up the lives of others. “I just hope Siouxland can come out and support all these causes and help make it a better place," says Sturgeon. EMILY TORCHIANA WCIV-TV ABC NEWS 4 – CHARLESTON, SC Character attacks online made Emily want to die. A failed suicide attempt showed her why she should live. Emily is a young woman with a personal story of bullying, mental health issues and attempted suicide. When she began to talk about it, people listened. Over the past 3 years, Emily has given over 100 speeches across the country, offering hope for those with mental illness and thoughts of suicide. People telling her their stories led Emily to create The Invisible Illnesses website, a platform that allows people to be heard and encourages them to fight. The site and its Facebook page received over 325,000 views in the first 5 months. “Prior to hearing you, I had constant suicidal thoughts,” one young person told her. “Then I reached out to my parents – thank you for saving my life.” 28 • Jefferson Awards Foundation

TAMMY VESEY WQAD NEWS 8 – THE QUAD CITIES, IA/IL Tammy is an USAF veteran determined to lift up the lives
of young women in Rock Island, IL. In 2012, a few girls at Rock Island High reached out to her for help putting on a talent show. She saw this as an opportunity to change their lives. The talent show is now an annual event called “Heroes Among Us,” that celebrates Black History Month and heroes in the Quad City Area. She also built a mentoring group that completes community service, participates in educational seminars, and organizes a “Phenomenal Women” event. “We try to build the young ladies up, so that by the time they graduate, they know that they can do what they set their mind to,” Vesey says.
MARY LU WALKER WETM – ELMIRA, NY With a song in her heart and a smile on her face, Mary Lu has traveled the world to entertain and educate children for nearly 5 decades. In 1970, she began writing and performing songs for children. She’s recently begun singing to seniors as well, bringing life, levity, and happiness. She’s accomplished it all with a $2 guitar she bought from a second-hand store. Walker’s goal – no matter her audience – is to always connect with those present. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said: “Music is the universal language,” with Mary Lu that language is delivered, received, and experienced in perfect harmony.
RUSS AND SHEILA WOLFF WKOW – MADISON, WI Russ and Sheila have turned their grief into action since their daughter, Aly, was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer as a teenager and died at the age of 20. Her dream was to find a cure. They started the Aly Wolff Foundation to honor her memory. In 5 years, they've raised over $600,000 for the Carbone Cancer Center. That funding allowed scientists to grow neuroendocrine tumors. Russ and Sheila worked closely with doctors and researchers to make this groundbreaking research possible. The lab has also started clinical trials on humans, putting them one step closer to treatments and a cure to neuroendocrine cancer. Their resilience is leading the fight against the disease and carrying on Aly’s legacy.
Congratulations to Citizens Energy Group’s Mark Ryan for being named a Jefferson Award recipient. Mark’s selfless service to organizations including the Dayspring Center and the ALS Association demonstrate he is truly an unsung hero working each day to enrich the lives of others.

CATHY BATTLE HIGHMARK HEALTH, MONROEVILLE, PA Working with her husband, Pastor Phillip Battle Jr., Cathy is active in the community through their ministry, located in the Hill District of Pittsburgh. BRONX HIGH SCHOOL FOR LAW AND COMMUNITY SERVICE BRONX, NY The Bronx High School For Law and Community Service Jefferson Awards Students in Action Team is recognized for their community service work in the Bronx. This year, the Career Exploration Club came up with “Adopt-A-Block,” a program to regularly clean neighborhood blocks that have been neglected. “Adopt-The-Block’s” future goal is to expand to nearby schools and have students with different backgrounds and abilities understand what it means to give back and be part of the ‘bigger picture.’ CHICAGO ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL CHICAGO, IL Cougars in Action is a student led organization dedicated to public service and volunteering. Severe budget cuts have made it harder to complete projects outside our school, but it hasn’t stopped our club from persevering. Our most notable project is the Snack Shack. It's in its 5th year, offering healthy snacks and drinks during the school day at very affordable prices. While students learn about healthier food options by shopping at the Snack Shack, this project also hones our club members’ marketing, management, and leadership skills that will help them make positive impacts around the Chicago community and provide confidence in their future careers. CLEARVIEW REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MULLICA HILL, NJ Clearview’s SIA team took advice from last year’s National Ceremony and focused on expanding their major projects, involving more community members in each event, and mentoring underclassmen to continue activating service projects in future years. Their largest projects addressed food insecurity, covering student’s medical expenses, and global oppression of girls. The team is most proud of their Humanitarian Awareness campaign, which aimed to bring awareness to marginalized groups in order to create a more diverse and accepting school climate. Clearview SIA strongly believes that anyone can change the world. COCOA BEACH JR-SR HIGH SCHOOL COCOA BEACH, FL During the '16-17 school year, the Cocoa Beach SIA team impacted the lives of others, putting service above self. Their service projects included raising funds for a young girl in Uganda to purchase food, clean water, education and health services; creating a petting zoo for children with special needs; and raising over $1,400 for their annual “Secret Santa” project. The team also collected 200 lbs. of food, 700 lbs. of recycling, over 145 toys and gifts, 500 books, and served over 290 meals. They also volunteered at local beach clean ups with Habitat for Humanity. In total, the team tracked over 23,000 service hours, generating a financial impact of over $543,000. COMPTON EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL COMPTON, CA Compton Early College’s JAF SIA team has 20 students. SIA members recognize that service can often be nameless, faceless, and sometimes thankless, yet they are committed to serving their community while creating a lasting effect among those who are impacted by their service. Students meet once a week to create projects that will have the most impact on their community based on the needs of the community. This year our SIA team was recognized for three service projects: S.T.E.A.M. Family Night, Second Hope, and For Giving Sake, impacting 347 individuals. FISHERS HIGH SCHOOL FISHERS, IN The Fishers HS SIA team is recognized this year because of new and innovative projects that engaged not only the student body but the whole community. Our theme and philosophy this year was “Providing the Basics.” The three main projects that we completed this year focused on the basic human necessities of food, shelter, and water. Our first project was a canned food drive. We asked shoppers at a grocery store to buy cans to feed our community. For the shelter project, we collected books for veterans who provide shelter for us every day. For the water project, we hosted a movie night to provide clean water for Flint, MI.

PINE-RICHLAND HIGH SCHOOL GIBSONIA, PA Pine-Richland High School’s Students In Action Peer 2 Peer Empowerment team strives to promote positivity and acceptance within the school and community.
