Celebrating Greatness Multiplying Good

WeLCoMe

Welcome Throughout 46 years, the Jefferson Awards Foundation has celebrated grassroots unsung heroes and trained and empowered youth to be leaders, problem solvers and impactful global citizens.

Welcome to the 46th Annual Jefferson Awards DC National Ceremony! Jefferson Awards were established in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard to celebrate greatness in service. Since then over 61,000 grassroots unsung heroes have been recognized with Jefferson Awards – and each of their stories has inspired others to serve. Through celebration, we multiply good. The Jefferson Awards Foundation is also committed to training and empowering youth to be leaders, problem solves and impactful global citizens. To date, we have provided over 25,000 young people with confidence in their ability to make a difference and the skills they need to do it well. We believe in public service not just because it improves communities, but because it changes the lives of those who participate. At a divisive time in our nation’s history, we believe it’s more important than ever before to unite in service and in celebration of the good we do for one another. Thank you for joining this celebration and for all the good you do.

2018 National Winners The 46th class of National Jefferson Award Winners has not only generated enormous impact on their own, but has inspired countless others to engage in service. From lifting up the next generation to championing the arts, these National Winners are leading the way. eLaINe WYNN s. roGer HorCHoW aWard For oUTsTaNdING PUBLIC serVICe BY a PrIVaTe CITIZeN Elaine Wynn has established herself as a savvy business leader, an indomitable crusader for children’s welfare and an influential philanthropist. Elaine co-founded Wynn Resorts in 2000 and helped guide the company’s expansion. Previously, she co-founded and led Mirage Resorts from 1976 to 2000. Just as her success in business is indicative of Elaine’s intellect, her humanitarianism is indicative of her heart. As a Trustee of the Elaine P. Wynn & Family Foundation, Elaine is personally and actively involved, with her family, in a variety of community organizations whose passions and priorities mirror her own. Elaine’s commitment to improve children’s lives through education has engaged her in numerous leadership roles at local, state and national levels. Over the past 25 years, in her home state of Nevada, the last four Governors have drafted Elaine into leadership positions addressing public education. Her devotion extends to higher education too. Elaine chaired for eight years the UNLV Foundation, and is also a past member of the Executive Board of the Consortium for Policy Research in Education. Elaine is a tireless advocate of programs and services for children who live in poverty. For nearly two decades, she has been actively engaged with Communities in Schools (CIS), the oldest and most successful stay-in-school organization in America. With a mission to surround students with a community of support, CIS will serve 1.5 million vulnerable children in more than 2,400 schools this year, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Elaine has been a member of the national board since 1999 and was elected chairman in 2007. She was also the founding chairman of CIS Nevada. Elaine’s enthusiasm for the arts is demonstrated by her participation on the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Board of Trustees, an appointment made by President Barack Obama in 2010. In 2011, she joined the board of The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

CHrIs LoNG oUTsTaNdING PUBLIC serVICe IN ProFessIoNaL sPorTs Chris Long is entering his 11th season in the NFL and his second as a defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles. Long won back to back Super Bowls in 2016 and 2017 as a member of the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles respectively. The first and only active University of Virginia football player to have his number retired, Long's record in the NFL is also impressive. Drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Long has accumulated 63.5 career sacks (40.5 of them during a 4-year span from 2010-2013). The former second overall draft pick is a four-time Pro Bowl alternate. In 2015 Long founded The Chris Long Foundation with the mission to help those most “at-risk” at home and abroad through focused programs in the areas of clean water, military support, and forwarding educational equity and opportunity for underserved youth. Long’s Waterboys initiative that unites fans, businesses, and NFL players to raise funds and awareness to provide clean water for East African communities in need has successfully funded 33 wells, providing water to over 125,000 people in Tanzania. In 2017, Long pledged all 16 of his NFL game checks to support organizations that focus on educational equity and opportunity and launched the Pledge 10 for Tomorrow initiative, continuing Long’s work to utilize his platform to inspire and engage fans to join him in creating positive change. In 2018, Long was named the recipient of the NFLPA’s Byron “Whizzer” White Community MVP Award for his positive impact on his team city and communities across the country. Long was born in Santa Monica, CA into a football family. The son of Diane Long and Pro Football Hall of Famer and NFL broadcaster, Howie Long, Long grew up in Charlottesville, VA along with his two brothers: Kyle, Pro Bowl guard for the Chicago Bears, and Howie Jr., Oakland Raiders player personnel executive. In 2013, he married his wife, Megan; in 2016, they welcomed their first child, Waylon.

aBBIe NeLsoN & PIa PHILLIPs oUTsTaNdING PUBLIC serVICe BY INdIVIdUaLs 25 Years or YoUNGer PAB’S PACKS is a nonprofit organization founded by teenagers Abbie Nelson and Pia Phillips with Abbie’s mom, Martha Dayton. Best friends since pre-k, both Abbie and Pia were diagnosed with life-changing diseases (Type 1 Diabetes and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Stage IIA) at the ages of 13 and 14. While hospitalized, the girls experienced a comfort gap for teenage patients and were inspired to find a solution to address the need. In 2014, Abbie and Pia created PAB’S PACKS in order to let other chronically ill teens know they are not alone. With the mission of providing comfort and encouragement, the girls designed cool, custom backpacks and hand-selected items that would enhance a teenager’s hospital stay. Since then, over 4,000 backpacks have been donated through partnerships with children’s hospitals and summer camps across the nation.

TONYA ALLARD WQOW-TV - EAU CLAIRE, WI   Tonya Allard became a Red Cross disaster volunteer over a year ago. In that

time, she has assisted with multiple family home fires and large-scale disasters, including the Chetek Tornado and the Southeast Wisconsin Flood. While already on assignment in Milwaukee for flooding, she learned that her own city of Arcadia was overrun by water. She immediately returned to her hometown – but not her home. Tonya spent 36 straight hours staffing the Red Cross shelter, helping those in her community who had literally seen floodwater sweep away the things they hold dear. Once the waters receded, Tonya stayed on as the after-hours volunteer fielding late night calls and personally dropping off emergency supplies.

FRANK AUSTIN WGXA-TV - MACON, GA  Frank Austin is a nonprofit advocate committed to empowering communities in Macon, GA. Working to strengthen his community through neighborhood revitalization and informative workshops, Frank draws on the latest business models to focus on five outcomes: Housing, Education, Economic Development, Reducing Crime, and Health. Through addressing policies and creating a master plan for sustainable land use, Frank has changed the economic and social landscape of the region. His work has bridged the racial divide, caused a 50 percent decrease in crime, increased community pride, and broken down social and economic barriers. Frank has personally taken the lead in 84 litter prevention activities, spearheaded seven community clean ups, and overseen 2,185 volunteers who have collectively contributed more than 11,000 volunteer hours to the community. STEVE BROSNIHAN WJAR-TV - BRISTOL, RI  Every Monday night, the banks of the Providence River light up in an inspiring display of love and hope for the kids in Hasbro Children’s Hospital – bringing smiles to their faces and capturing America’s imagination. The man behind those smiles is Steve Brosnihan. A cartoonist by trade, Steve has volunteered at the hospital several days a week for the past 25 years, sharing his talents and skills with thousands of ill children and their families. He teaches, entertains, and distracts young patients as they fight for their lives. He created “Good Night Lights” for those children, and keeps the program running as a purely volunteer effort. Steve brings joy and happiness and, most importantly, makes sure kids know they are loved. JAMES CAMPBELL, JR. AND MIKE THOMPSON WAOW - WAUSAU WI  James Campbell, Jr. and Mike Thompson

are co-founders of Never Forgotten Honor Flight (NFHF), a chapter which serves 12 counties in Wisconsin. Both work tirelessly on behalf of veterans. What makes NFHF unique from other chapters is that they host a pre-flight dinner and program the day of departure, featuring guest speakers and live local music. Since its inception in 2009, the NFHF has flown 2,563 veterans and 1,555 guardians to Washington D.C. so that veterans may see the memorial dedicated to their service. These veterans have included 1,011 WWII veterans, 1,063 Korean War veterans, and 489 veterans from the Vietnam era. Their 31st flight to Washington, D.C. took place on September 11, 2017.

CAROLYN CLOYD  JOURNAL GAZETTE & TIMES COURIER - MATTOON, IL  As Executive Director of the United Way of Coles County, Carolyn Cloyd leads a combined fundraising campaign for over 30 community organizations. The daughter of a WWII veteran, she is passionate about veterans issues and volunteers with the new Coles County Veterans Support Coalition and Run for the Fallen. Cloyd is also involved with the Honor Flight program, the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program, Mattoon and Effingham Rotary Clubs, Mattoon Kiwanis, and Support Our Survivors of Iwo Jima. In addition, she assists with Peace Meals and Pancake Day events for the Kiwanis Club, Arcola Alumni Association, and the Mattoon Public Works Advisory Board. In 2008, after losing her son, PFC Luke Cloyd, she increased her volunteer hours to help herself regain purpose. NATHANIEL COLEMAN, JR  WXOW - LA CROSSE, WI  Once homeless and living out of his car, Nate Coleman is now helping at risk youth through his boxing organization, The Good Fight Community Center. The center provides a safe after school place while teaching kids the disciplines of boxing to build confidence and self-respect. It also offers computers, tutoring, guest speakers, emergency food, and college prep courses to the neighborhood’s young people. Nate’s mission is to provide at-risk and disadvantaged youth with hope, encouragement, and a safe environment to develop personal goals, discipline, and values free from juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, truancy, crime, and gang activities. The Good Fight Community Center has grown to 90 members, ages 10 to 18, since opening less than two years ago. LORI COLLINS  WBBJ-TV - JACKSON, TN   Lori Collins founded Redemption Road Rescue to provide a safe haven for animals that have been mistreated or neglected. To date, the organization has rescued over 1,000 horses and 500 other animals from Arizona to Washington D.C. Redemption Road Rescue is fully operated by Lori and 59 volunteers who spend countless hours caring for horses, donkeys, mules, pigs, buffaloes, and other animals in need. In October 2017 alone, Lori rescued 35 malnourished horses. Her ultimate goal is to help these animals find forever homes. She’s done just that, benefiting both the animals and the people who care for them. Lori has donated a pony to a 6-year-old girl whose birthday wish was to give all neglected horses a home, and a horse to a therapeutic program for disabled children.

HOWARD DAVIS  KNIN – TV - BOISE, ID Through Kid’s First Cast, Howard Davis teaches children the values of fishing and the importance of taking care of our environment. Founded by Howard and a group of dedicated volunteers in 2011, Kid’s First Cast donates fishing gear to children and teaches them how to catch their very first fish. Their mission is to help build and sustain healthy communities by providing education, conservation, and outdoor recreation. Howard and his team organize free fishing events and believe that by helping kids learn the fundamentals and the ethics of fishing, they will also gain a sense of personal achievement, self-esteem, and confidence. NANCY EIGEL-MILLER THE ROTARY CLUB OF CINCINNATI, THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, WKRC-TV, LOCAL 12 CINCINNATI, OH 1N5 is not just another catchy name – it is a shocking statistic. 1 in 5 young people live with a

diagnosable mental illness. After losing her husband to suicide in 2008, Nancy Eigel-Miller experienced stigma in her own community. This moved her to leave her marketing career and join the Board of Directors of 1N5 to change the conversation about mental health, focusing on teen mental health issues and suicide. Since then Nancy has grown the program to 12 high schools and five universities, reaching over 87,000 young people in 2017. 1N5 hosts the annual Warrior Run marathon, and Nancy has raised over $765,000 to date. All proceeds go to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s suicide prevention program and participating schools.

TIA FECHTER KSBW-TV - MONTEREY, CA After moving to Monterey County, Tia Fechter noticed a terrible injustice for

homeless women in the peninsula – it was illegal for them to sleep in their own vehicles. In response, she helped change local ordinances to create a safe parking program throughout the county. By working with city councils, mayors, and other officials, Tia founded One Starfish Safe Parking & Supportive Services, which focuses on three goals for all homeless guests: finding housing, increasing income, and improving mental and physical health. Since its inception, One Starfish has seen over 50% of guests obtain housing, over 75% of guests increase their income, and 100% of guests improve their health. The organization has served over 100 guests and directed many hundreds towards other assistance.

KRISTY ROSE FOLLMAR AND SCOTT NEWMAN  WRTV - INDIANAPOLIS, IN Marion County Prosecutor Scott Newman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at age 39. He soon started improving, and Rock Steady Boxing was born. World champion boxer Kristy Rose Follmar taught and designed the classes. As the first gym in the country dedicated to fighting Parkinson’s, Rock Steady serves thousands of patients monthly, working on exercises adapted from boxing drills to improve quality of life – both physically and cognitively. There are now over 550 affiliates in the United States and across the globe. SUZETTE GARDENHOUR WJAC – JOHNSTOWN, PA After beating breast cancer, Suzette Gardenhour is using her strength to help other cancer patients. A band teacher at Conemaugh Township schools, she started Music Makes Us Stronger, a donor-advised fund that supports students, music-student alumni, and their children who are fighting cancer. Her love of music and teaching has allowed her to spend 30 years surrounded by song books, music stands, and students who inspire her to serve. The fund’s first fundraiser, a music department reunion and concert, was held in the fall of 2017 and received $9,000 in donations. This summer, Suzette will retire with the hopes of continuing her fundraising efforts. This November, the Music Makes Us Stronger fundraiser will be a vendor fair with performances by different musical groups. to support area law enforcement and first responders. He created “Back the Blue” branded items such as yard signs, decals, and apparel to fund the campaign’s annual Back the Blue 5K Run, which generated almost $7,000 in 2017 for local police departments to purchase much needed equipment. In addition, Tom supports the Albany Chainsaw Gang, a volunteer group that was formed after two devastating storms hit Southwest Georgia in January 2017. Through fundraising and donations, he was able to provide fuel, oil, gloves, chainsaws and other supplies needed for the clean-up effort. The group volunteered their time cutting down and removing trees that had fallen onto homes and into yards.

DIANE GRAY  KPIX-TV - SAN FRANCISCO, CA   While volunteering at a community center in her Bayview neighborhood, Diane Gray noticed many African-American students were struggling with school – leading to limited post- secondary opportunities. Diane sprang into action, founding “100% College Prep” to motivate students to always give their all. She recruited college students to serve as academic coaches, arranged monthly academic workshops, and engaged community volunteers. The program quickly grew into its own space and added computers, a library, classrooms and a kitchen with a cook to feed students while they focused on their studies. In addition, the program arranged college visits so students could see the potential for their own success. To date, more than 120 students have earned undergraduate and graduate degrees and hundreds more are taking part in the program, striving for college success. MELISSA GUERRA  LAREDO MORNING TIMES – LAREDO, TX  Melissa Guerra established a local Alzheimer’s support group shortly before losing her father to the disease in 2004. At the time of her father’s diagnosis, little was known about Alzheimer’s and how to care for those who were diagnosed. Despite holding down a full-time job and caring for her family, Melissa has been helping to fill that gap for over 14 years by sharing her experiences, healthcare resources, and insights with others who are new to caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. She was also instrumental in organizing the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Texas A&M International University. In addition, Melissa continues her father’s service legacy through volunteering with Habitat for Humanity as their local CFO since 2008. CARL T. HAYDEN, ESQ.  WETM -TV – ELMIRA, NY   Carl Hayden is a champion of volunteerism who is passionate about education. His dedication to public education formally started with his 1979 election to the Elmira City School Board, serving for four years, including two years as Board President. In 1990 Carl was elected to the New York State Board of Regents, serving a total of 12 years, including six as Chancellor. That service was followed by four years as Chairman of the State University of New York (SUNY). BILL AND TERRI HIMMEL THE TOLEDO BLADE, WTVG & BUCKEYE CABLE - TOLEDO, OH   After their daughter, Lily, participated in Gliding Stars, a skating program for young people with physical and cognitive challenges, Bill and Terri Himmel decided to start a chapter in their hometown of Toledo. While maintaining two full-time jobs, Bill and Terri arranged for ice time, recruited volunteers, and invited young adults with physical and/or cognitive challenges to learn to skate. Raising money for ice time, equipment and other needs, the Himmels grew the program to include 40 skaters, each assigned one or two volunteers. BOB & DENISE HOLSINGER KMEG-TV - SIOUX CITY, IA  Bob & Denise Holsinger have positively impacted the Siouxland community for nearly 20 years with their compassion, selflessness, and dedication. The couple founded Toys for Tots of Siouxland, a non-profit organization that collects thousands of new and unwrapped toys to give to kids during Christmas. As a hardworking, motivated, and ambitious couple, this project drives the Holsingers to enrich and empower the lives of those in need. They said it's their mission "to not only deliver a toy, but to deliver a message of hope to less fortunate kids." This year, Toys for Tots of Siouxland has served more than 600 families through seven agencies, impacting 2,750 children. To date, they have distributed toys to more than 60,000 kids across their community. PHIL JACKSON WPDE-TV - MYRTLE BEACH, SC   What started as a wetsuit drive morphed into teaching hundreds of local children how to surf. Now Phil Jackson is on a mission to support children in his community who don’t have access to recreational activities. In four years, Jackson's Surf Dreams Foundation has impacted hundreds of lives by teaching children how to surf and building a community of supporters. A recovering addict for 13 years, Phil credits surfing with saving his life. In order to give back, he hosts "Take a Kid Surfing Day" each summer, covering nearly all of the expenses. The organization also covers the fees for surf competitions, which participants have competed in across the east coast. VICKIE JASMANN KCWY-TV – CASPER/CHEYENNE, WY   Despite battling an incurable blood cancer that requires daily chemotherapy, Vickie Jasmann has dedicated her life to serving others. A former Marine, she has not let anything stop her drive to give back. She is a longtime supporter of Casper’s Relay for Life event, which was founded by her mother, and is always quick to help those in need. Vickie has fostered over 200 children, teaches Sunday School classes, develops fundraisers for the senior center, provides transportation for doctors’ appointments for those without the means, and does the grocery shopping for those who can’t leave their home. In August 2017, she even became a Certified Tourist Ambassador to welcome and support visitors to the community.

Some kids would give anything to go to school.

Thanks to the First State School at Wilmington Hospital, chronically ill youngsters can get a quality education even as they receive the medical treatment they need. The first school of its kind in the U.S., it’s a collaboration between Christiana Care and the Delaware Department of Education through the Red Clay School District. The First State School is one more way we’re partnering with the community to make a difference.

INGrId JoHNsoN NJ adVaNCe MedIa - NeWarK, NJ At 13 years old, Ingrid Johnson’s daughter was kidnapped and held captive for 11 months. Searching the streets of New Jersey and New York, with minimum support, Ingrid – a mother of three – used every instinct she could muster to find her daughter. Now she works tirelessly to ensure that no one’s daughter is a victim of human trafficking. She volunteers with Covenant House of Newark, works with the Newark and New Jersey Coalition against Human Trafficking, and has served on boards such as Nancy's Place, Communities in Cooperation, and the Sanar Wellness Institute. Ingrid has also testified before the New Jersey Senate to advocate for legislation to support laws and services to assist victims. Most important of all, she has given hope to mothers and fathers who are searching for their missing children. JeFF KLare WTGs-TV – saVaNNaH, Ga Jeff Klare works with heroes who face a stark reality when they return from the

battlefield. That’s why he founded “Be a Hero, Hire a Hero,” a nonprofit he started after 9/11 as a way to offer job resources to unemployed veterans and those with disabilities. His work has led to more than 11,000 people finding jobs over the last 12 years. Klare says the program provides additional resources to communities he feels are sometimes overlooked in the job market. Those who know Klare say that he lives every day driven by his passion for service.

roN LaUGHLIN KXLT – roCHesTer, MN Ron Laughlin travels hundreds of miles each week bringing Veterans to and from the VA Hospital in the Twin Cities. He is also active in his local veterans organizations and is a member of the Honor Guard for the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. Laughlin signed up for the U.S. Navy a month before he graduated from high school in 1961. At 17 years old, his parents had to sign for him. He served from 1961-1966, including a stint in Southeast Asia at the beginning of the Vietnam War. KYLe MCKaY WBNs-TV - CoLUMBUs, oH Kyle McKay has overcome his fear of flying, fear of public speaking, and fear of the unknown in order to advocate for people with Down Syndrome. It’s an issue close to Kyle’s heart, because Kyle himself has Down Syndrome. Ten years ago, at age 19, he became a board member of the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio. Since then he has raised over $50,000 – and performed at their Dancing with Our Stars fundraiser. Kyle is also a passionate advocate for employment opportunities and financial independence for people with Down Syndrome and other disabilities. He has lobbied elected officials, testified in support of the ABLE Act, and spoken publicly about overcoming the challenges of having a disability, negative labelling, employment barriers and other obstacles. MICHeLLe MCMULLeN WQad NeWs 8 - daVeNPorT, Ia & MoLINe & roCK IsLaNd, IL In 2013, Michelle McMullen’s son Jordan passed away at age 14 after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Jordan’s positive attitude brought so much joy to his classmates, teachers, friends, the media, and those throughout the Quad Cities Area that he inspired Michelle to start Jordan’s Joy, a nonprofit organization that helps children who are living with rare and life-threatening diseases. Jordan’s Joy does more than just raise money for families. It creates joy and memories so that children have something to look forward to and something to look back on. Recently, Jordan’s Joy surprised Noah Holton – a 13-year-old with a form of Cerebral Palsy – with a big check for a wheelchair ramp and a shopping spree at a video game store. BoB aNd BeTTY MITCHeLL WdTV-TV - CLarKsBUrG, WV Bob and Betty Mitchell have dedicated their retirement to feeding the hungry in their community. They began their journey to opening a food pantry in 2010 and currently reach over 50 households. On the third Wednesday of every month, people come from three counties to visit the pantry. The couple also personally delivers meals to those who are unable to visit themselves. Their church purchases food for the pantry out of pocket, but also relies on donations from local grocery stores, as well as their monthly allotment of USDA commodities. Volunteers from the church and other groups come each month to help pack the food boxes. In addition to their work at the pantry, Betty drives neighbors to doctor appointments and Bob goes on a yearly mission trip to Haiti. darYL Morse WJBF NeWs CHaNNeL 6 - aUGUsTa, Ga Daryl Morse founded ReStart Augusta to give beds to children, families, and veterans who do not have furniture. His goal to provide them with a sense of comfort, rest, and peace by creating cost efficient, sturdy, and comfortable beds from scratch. After discovering that he and his friends could create a complete bed frame for about $75, they began collecting donations for hardware supplies and bedding. ReStart Augusta works closely with the Augusta Warrior Project, local churches, caseworkers, and other support groups. Once a need for bedding has been identified, volunteers deliver the beds and set them up. Since 2014, Daryl and his team have made and delivered over 1,500 beds in the Augusta area.

With the support of family and friends, he was able to get back on his feet. In 2015, he founded VetHelp1 after seeing that government programs were falling short in supporting veterans in need of housing and employment. VetHelp1 helps veterans and those diagnosed with PTSD connect with community resources, find financial assistance, and learn job readiness skills. In addition, it is a sanctuary for veterans and has served over 13,000 meals to date. Kevin’s purpose is to lead by example, demonstrating that one person can make a difference. RICHARD PEREZ  WHEC-TV - ROCHESTER, NY   In 2003, Richard Perez received a life-saving liver transplant. Given a rare second chance at life, his mission is to educate others about organ donation and support families awaiting a transplant. Richard has helped more than 700 liver transplant recipients, 2,000 people who have undergone a transplant evaluation, and innumerable family members who have turned to him for assistance. From 2004 to 2010, Richard helped over 105 Rochester families avoid hotel costs and stressful daily commutes with his generosity. Most incredible of all, according to the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network, the percentage of registered organ donors has grown from 27 percent to nearly 40 percent of viable residents. And it’s all thanks to Richard. NICK PRICE WCIV-TV - CHARLESTON, SC   Several years ago, high school soccer player, Nick Price, was diagnosed with Pontine Glioma – a form of brain cancer that is so challenging, many doctors refused to even attempt to treat it. Many feared that surgery would lead to paralysis or worse. Eventually, an Arizona neurologist promised to make the Charleston teenager whole again and, six months later, he completed a successful surgery. Nick was back on the soccer field three weeks later, beginning a long recovery process. Inspired by how others helped him during his treatment and recovery, Nick founded the Nick Price Foundation to inspire others who are given the same devastating diagnosis that he received. The organization raises money to support families during treatment, and Nick regularly visits with brain cancer patients to provide emotional support. MARY AND ERNIE PRINCE WBOC-TV - SALISBURY, MD  Mary and Ernie Prince have dedicated their lives to helping veterans and senior citizens on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Epitomizing the idea of giving back and service, they spend the bulk of their week volunteering for the American Legion Post 64 in Salisbury. In addition, Ernie organizes fishing trips for recovering warriors from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital. Mary also volunteers with Women Supporting Women, a nonprofit organization that provides free services and support to all those who are affected by breast cancer. As a breast cancer survivor herself, Mary ensures those fighting the disease know they're not alone. Mary and Ernie are “a perfect pair. They go together like milk and honey," says Mike Powers, commander of American Legion Post 64. MARY LOUISE RESCH WACH-TV - COLUMBIA, SC  Mary Louise Resch helped launch Operation HP, a hunger prevention program through Harvest Hope designed to serve the military community. Eleven percent of clients at Harvest Hope Food Bank are veterans, and Resch has worked for several years making sure no one who has served goes hungry. She has brought in more than $100,000 for the Operation HP program, involving everyone from lawmakers to members of the military. In 2016, Resch provided more than 5 million meals for the hungry, and she doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. "It's all about making the change," she says. “One person at a time, one day at a time." JEN ROMÁN WKOW-TV - MADISON, WI  Jen Román has served the residents of Madison as Captain of the Fire Department

for 20 years. With too few women serving as firefighters, Jen has had to overcome numerous barriers to become captain. It's her mission to make it easier for women and girls to serve. That’s why she founded CampHERO, which helps girls develop courage, gain confidence, and build character while learning about the protective services. The program gives girls ages K-12 the chance to explore their interests and skills through hands-on activities taught by real police officers, firefighters, EMT/paramedics, and dispatchers. The girls knock down doors, put out fires, repel down buildings, and learn rescue and first aid techniques. So far over a thousand girls have benefitted from the program.

KAREN SCUILLI PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE - PITTSBURGH, PA  Following treatment for salivary gland cancer, Karen Scuilli experienced facial disfigurement and found there were no groups to turn to for comfort and support. Many individuals experience loneliness from the isolation, rejection, or despair that living with a “changed” face or body can bring. Karen set out to remedy that by founding Face2Face Healing, an organization dedicated to filling the gap between where medicine ends and patients are left to emotionally cope with and adapt to resulting disfigurement. Their mission is to connect individuals living with disfigurement, their caregivers, healthcare professionals, and educators to promote continued healing through outreach, interaction, activity, resources, advocacy, and education. Karen's goal is to empower disfigured persons to rediscover their inner beauty, restore their "voice" and confidence, and educate the public. RACHAEL AND CAMERON STALEY WLIO-TV, THE LIMA NEWS AND THE UNITED WAY OF GREATER LIMA - LIMA, OH Rachael and Cameron have a commitment to the special needs community in Allen County, Ohio. Rachael started the Allen County Abilities Baseball League (ACABL) in 2003, now operating in its 15th year. In 2016 the Lima Rotary Club awarded the ACABL with $100,000 to begin fundraising for the construction of a field designed for individuals with special needs. The field was constructed after fundraising an additional $200,000 from local businesses, including the University of Northwestern Ohio, who donated land for the field’s construction. Today, the “Rotary Field of Dreams at UNOH” serves over 100 special needs baseball players. JUDY TRAVIS THE NEWS JOURNAL - WILMINGTON, DE  For 14 years, Judy Travis and her “army” of volunteers have provided

personalized Christmas stockings to members of our armed forces in harm’s way. Judy founded Stockings For Soldiers, which features 1,000 volunteers from over 31 states. This year, the organization made and sent over 10,000 personalized stocking to troops in 17 countries. In addition, they sent 2,000 fleece blankets, 500 knitted hats, and over 10,000 personal greeting cards, many created by children at local schools. Judy’s efforts have also impacted the local community where 1,300 pounds of stockings were donated to K9 heroes and their handlers at local law enforcement agencies and local shelters. This eight-week community-based project is a labor of love for Judy and her volunteers.

DAVID TRAYNHAM TIMES UNION - ALBANY, NY   A pastor of New Horizons church for 26 years, David Traynham has courageously worked to address hunger, housing, employment, crime victimization, and clothing needs in his community. He is the leader of the ALERT (Albany Law Enforcement Reconciliation Team) initiative, which builds a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and transgenerational bridge between law enforcement and minority communities. Under Traynham's leadership, these groups have come together to collaboratively address racial and social justice issues. The goal of ALERT is to calm heightened tensions while educating and uniting communities and law enforcement by building mutual trust through partnership. To date, this initiative has met with the Albany Police, the District Attorney, the Sheriff, State Police, and the FBI. BEN WATFORD THE NEW BERN SUN JOURNAL - NEW BERN, NC  Ben Watford has been fighting racial injustices throughout his life by pushing societal boundaries and working to right wrongs along his path. A graduate of Howard University in 1957, he won the prestigious National Science Foundation scholarship to attend Tuskegee University. His drive to Alabama further instilled his desire to make a difference. Currently, he preserves history by overseeing the Crockett Miller Slave Quarters through the James City Historical Society. He also founded Community Artists Will Inc., using his artistic talent to tell AfricanAmerican history by creating a tribute to slaves who were denied a tombstone or grave marker. In addition, Ben has served numerous organizations, including the N.C. Human Relations Commission, Smart Start, and the Coastal Women’s Center. NIC AND HEATHER WEERS KCRG-TV - CEDAR RAPIDS, IA  Seven years ago, Nic and Heather Weers started Raider Marathon Running Club to help middle school students in their community reach their goal of running a mile a day. By the end of each session, their goal is for students to reach 26 miles – the equivalent of a marathon. The running club’s motto, “refuse to be average,” is taken outside of the club too, teaching children not to give up when things become hard, painful, or discomforting. The club has also helped students set and achieve lofty goals. Finally, it teaches the importance of teamwork, which youth participants demonstrate by cheering on their peers as they finish their own marathons.

Students In Action (SIA) is a unique youth service, leadership and recognition program that supports, trains and empowers today's youth to be leaders, problem solvers, entrepreneurs and impactful global citizens. SIA teams compete regionally for the honor of representing their region at the National Ceremony. Ambassador Schools have reached the highest level of excellence in the Students In Action program, having won the regional banner level competition two years in a row. 2018 WINNING aMBassador TeaM CLearVIeW reGIoNaL HIGH sCHooL MULLICa HILL, NJ Clearview Regional High School’s Jefferson Awards Students In Action team is dedicated to serving others and creating a meaningful impact in their community. Clearview SIA aims to make their community excited to engage in service by creating fun and easy ways for them to get involved in their projects. Their message this year was, “Tending to Our Garden,” in which they set out to nurture their garden of service so it could grow more abundant and impactful each year. They focused on mentoring underclassmen, building partnerships, and maintaining the dignity of their beneficiaries. Clearview wants to create a legacy of service and leadership, and pass down the skills they have learned from being a part of the Jefferson Awards Foundation. aMBassador TeaMs Blaine High School - Blaine, MN Charter School of Wilmington - Wilmington, DE El Camino High School - San Francisco, CA

Andrews High School is located in a rural community in South Carolina. Nearly thirty percent of the population in Andrews live in poverty, significantly higher than the national average of 14%. Beginning this year the state of South Carolina will give all 3rd-grade students the SC Ready Test, which measures their reading ability. If students fail to read at a 3rd-grade level, they will be held back. In response to this new test, and as a way to support improved literacy, the Andrews SIA team created “Step 4th to Reading," providing students with ten books each, for a total of 6,500 books.

BroWNsVILLe area HIGH sCHooL  BroWNsVILLe, Pa To bridge the gap between school and community, to restore the historic town of Brownsville, PA to economic and social prosperity, and to foster pride in the hearts of our people - This is the mission of the Brownsville chapter of Students In Action. This year’s group of young public servants set their sights on the Brownsville Free Public Library and committed to ensuring that this symbol of the town’s pride can keep its doors open. Through an in-depth investigation of community need, the group focused on creating a “Teen Space” at their library where students can study and socialize outside of school. In the years to come, Brownsville SIA will see this project completed. CHaMPLIN ParK HIGH sCHooL  CHaMPLIN, MN Champlin Park High School’s Students in Action team, the Leo Club, is

being acknowledged for their success in accomplishing this year’s goals: enhancing leadership skills, engaging student volunteers, and impacting the future of their community. They engaged with the Champlin Park community by holding school-wide service projects and spreading the message of the Leo Club through effective communication. Finally, through their many service projects, the Leo Club created a lasting impact on the world in which they live; throughout the year, 1,193 students accumulated 13,000 service hours, raising $14,000 and helping thousands of individuals.

CoNVeNT & sTUarT HaLL HIGH sCHooL  saN FraNCIsCo, Ca Convent & Stuart Hall’s SIA team had some significant impact this year: 48 team members engaged 85% of its school in volunteering, were responsible for generating a remarkable 8,082 hours of service and fundraised $28,000. Among several projects, One Less Hungry (OLH) was created by a former member in 2014 who wanted to aid San Francisco’s homeless population. Every month volunteers assemble an average of 200 lunch bags, experience firsthand the plight of homelessness within their city through interactions with the homeless, and positively engage with them. OLH has expanded from 8 students to over 50 students and parents. Through an innovative partnership with Replate, the 600 meals served in the first year have grown to 1800 meals this school year.

While they have a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer, they find it crucial to make sure every member feels accepted and heard. Their leaders take every member’s ideas and opinions into consideration to make each year better than the last. When doing this, they formulated new ways to make their annual events perfect and create new events. With teamwork and social media, their team was able to surpass their expectations and prosper further than they ever thought possible. Their team truly believes they made a significant impact on those less fortunate in their community due to natural disaster and they are glad to have put their determination, passion, and free time into Outreach for the Unreached. FIsHers HIGH sCHooL FIsHers, IN Fishers High School Students in Action team dedicated their efforts to creating projects based on community needs and their passions. After assessing needs in their high school, they focused on creating a more positive and accepting environment, placing happiness stickers and positive self-image posters on bathroom mirrors. They then concentrated on impacting their broader community through the Claire’s Cans project, providing food for a food pantry for six months. The idea of community expanded to the city of Indianapolis where they provided care packages for homeless. They further expanded their community to include both Puerto Rico and Ecuador, collecting $8,000 towards hurricane relief and soccer equipment for Ecuador’s youth to prevent gang activity. Each year their collaborative efforts have improved allowing them to benefit more organizations. Their goal is to continue to improve their community by creating leaders through service initiatives, volunteerism, and collaborations with other organizations and schools.
