Relevant Experience MUSIC BUILDING Value: £1.6m Client: Hymers College Cost per sq.m: £1,5895.70

Hymers College is the highest ranking independent school in Yorkshire for GCSE results and it has been an immense pleasure and privilege for Jefferson Sheard to design the Music Building as part of the College’s strategic vision of creating a school ‘fit for purpose’ in 2030. Hymers wanted to create an inspirational learning environment for its students which would be at once functional and stimulating. Furthermore, it was important for the space to be flexible in order to cope with technological advancements and the possible shift in learning styles. The purpose built £1.6m Music Building includes practice rooms, secure lockers in circulation areas and a recital hall to accommodate a full orchestra. A vaulted roof complements the surrounding Grade II Listed buildings, and open processional staircase with natural lighting penetrating into the heart of the building creates a dramatic ambience; this is an inspiring space designed to ignite creativity from the students.

The sustainable design of the building includes energy efficient heating and lighting systems with ‘intelligent’ controls, overnight cooling and natural ventilation as well as photovoltaic solar panels, helping to offset CO2 emissions. As part of this scheme to improve facilities for the school Jefferson Sheard also extended the sports centre to include changing rooms for the students, ensuring that all sport facilities are located on one site. “It’s fantastic to see a school invest so much money into creating a wonderful environment where pupils can be inspired and share their music. It was in the music rooms at my school that I discovered what I wanted to do with my life and I have no doubt that there will be students who discover themselves, their heart’s desire, in this new music centre.” -Dr John Rutter CBE

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE Value: £2.85m Client: Hymers College Cost per sq.m: £1,916.60

The £2.85 million project, which will comprise of a facility fit for the 21st Century to reflect the school’s architectural heritage and academic prowess, includes a multi-function hall, flexible teaching spaces and a library. Much care and attention has been paid to produce a design which will complement the school’s distinctive architectural style. The proposed use of terracotta, stone coloured mullions and brise soleil is a modern take on the stone mullions and terracotta detailing of the Listed Building and Memorial Hall. The relationship between the old and the new will be pushed even further as the school’s much-loved vintage gymnasium is to be refurbished as a contemporary multi-function space. The refurbishment will make use of the gymnasium’s double height volume, timber roof structure and distinctive character to create a modern, flexible, technology enabled, social learning environment and hub for the new LRC. “Jefferson Sheard were the only architects, at the initial briefing stage, to come and meet with me and chat through what we were after. When we saw their initial designs I was blown away because it was clear they had not only listened but had adapted my thoughts into something tangible.” -David Elstone, Headteacher

Relevant Experience APOLLO STUDIO ACADEMY Value: £0.5m Client: Apollo Studio Academy Cost per sq.m: £1,000

The Apollo Studio Academy is the first of its kind in Durham, and the innovative project called for an alternative spatial strategy to reflect the Academy’s curricula which offer new and exciting approaches to education through a mix of academic, vocational and project-based learning. The Academy, which serves 300 students, aged 14-18, is centred around a curriculum which has been developed in close consultation with local employers, and to reflect this, the Academy wanted the space to function less like a classroom and more like a professional working environment. The Academy is housed in the a previously undeveloped wing of East Durham College’s Peterlee Campus. The design, consisting of five learning studios, replaces the traditional classroom layout with a flexible, contemporary layout which has the feel of a ‘hub’ – a place for collaboration and the exchange of ideas – ideal for project-based learning. The main focus of the design is for open project learning area to be presented on arrival into the space. This area is adjacent to the new windows that are integrated into the existing façade.

The success of the space is down to the choice of furnishings along with the flexible architectural elements. The idea is to get as much transparency into the scheme so that there are not too many solid walls. Instead of walls, screens break up the open space. Coloured motifs applied in film to these screens provide an element of privacy, and the ‘cubist’ motif is an extension of the College’s branding, aiding visual wayfinding to the Academy through the College. For students and teachers, social interaction with peers is beneficial academically. Open-plan, informal learning areas provide individualised learning environments which also support collaborative activities, and their value lies in the way they encourage learning through dialogue, problem solving and information sharing. Seating and desks which can be easily adapted to suit both small groups and large was a significant part of the Interior Design strategy. We’ve provided a future-proofed design to accommodate technological change. The space is Wi-Fi enabled with power socket provision so that the Academy can be reconfigured if the curriculum changes over time.

“I am particularly pleased with the way the architects have maximised the available light. The space feels so light and airy; and we can already see the positive effect the new build is having on our students’ enthusiasm to learn.I’d like to thank the team at Jefferson Sheard for their valuable contribution in helping us set up this exciting new school. The school is going to have a fantastic impact on the lives of many young people over the coming years.” -Sally Hudson, Principal - Apollo Studio Academy
