Sex, Religion, Abortion and Justice presented by Rev. Rob Keithan, Director of Public Policy, Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice

Our society’s relationship with sexuality and reproductive freedom is deeply conflicted and passionately contested. And religion is almost always playing a role—whether or not we recognize it or want it to. What’s going to move us forward, and what does our faith have to do with it? What might our religiously-grounded vision of sexuality look like? See Rev. Keithan’s bio on page 2. Music: JUC Choir; Adam Revell, piano. Worship Associate: Bev Curtiss. 2 Explorations! 9:15 a.m. (M3/4) Deepening Your UU Faith by Participating in General Assembly facilitated by LeeAnn Dale and Barb

Scherer. JUC delegates at last years General Assembly will share their experiences in the hope of recruiting others to participate this year either virtually or on site in Rhode Island. Their enthusiasm for the experience is infectious. All questions answered!

Sunday, April 13 • 9:15 & 11 a.m. • Infant/toddler care provided.

On the Path presented by Rev. Dana Lightsey, Consulting Assistant Minister

This Palm Sunday we re-examine the notion of being on a path or on the way that Jesus mentions so often in the bible. Are there meaningful perspectives from Jesus’s teachings that are relevant for us today? What does it mean to be on our own path? Music: Lisa Bickford and Rebecca Shogren; Rev. Keith Arnold, piano. Worship Associate: Julie Excell. 2 Explorations! 9:15 a.m. (M3/4) Defending Environmental Rights in Guatemala with Rob Robinson and Stephanie Wells. See p. 5 for

Easter at JUC Spring is a beautiful time of year in Colorado. The earth slowly begins to sprout flowers through the frost. Cold melts into the promise of warmer weather and longer days. We make plans of egg hunts and family brunches. We might even don our best clothes and Easter bonnets. Spring and Easter are in the air, but what are we celebrating? As Unitarian Universalists, how do we understand this holiday? What questions are we, and our children, carrying? What questions do we want to ask, or answer, but aren’t sure how? The Easter story has been told for generations upon generations, and it is one we cannot ignore. This year, adults and children can explore our questions and seek meaning in this season through the following services: Maundy Thursday • April 17 • 6 p.m. (chapel) A contemplative service observing one of the holiest days of the Christian year, led by the UU Liberal Christians Group. Music, readings and communion will be included. To make room for all, we will offer the same Easter service Saturday night (with handbells) and Sunday morning (with JUC Choir).

Saturday, April 19 • 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 20 • 9:15 & 11 a.m.

Child care will be available Saturday evening; programming for children on Sunday morning includes an egg hunt for the tiniest JUCers (through Kindergarten), a canned food hunt for 1st–5th grades, and a youth service for 6th–12th grades.

In Evergreen: Sunday, April 20 • 4 p.m. Awakening led by Rev. Dana Lightsey You can help with the canned food hunt! Bring a canned food donation to church on Sunday, April 6, and talk to your kids (or grandkids!) about why we donate food to those in need. 1

Final Project of the Year: Multi-Media Music Rehearsals begin Tuesday, April 1 Performances Sat., April 26 & Sun., May 18

You may know Barb Bailey from her active involvement at Jefferson Unitarian Church with the Peace, Liberty & Justice Task Force or the Pastoral Care Group. As we say thank you and adieu to Vanessa Badolato so she can focus on her in-home preschool and her own family, we welcome Barb as our lead preschool teacher. Barb brings her knowledge of Unitarian Universalism and a fun and loving spirit to 4 and 5 year olds. The kids (and we) love her! Please welcome Barb in this new and exciting role!

We’ll explore the use of video and sound as we prepare songs and a video to share in the service on Sunday, May 18. Radiance Choir will also participate in the Spring Round-Up on April 26. LOV! (Living Our Values!) Packs of Hope Packs of Hope provides backpacks containing clothes and other basic items to children who are transitioning into foster care. Many of these children must leave their homes quickly and are unable to take any personal items. These backpacks contain the only possessions they may have for some time. Look for the LOV table in the commons starting April 6 to choose a backpack. Packs will be collected Sundays through April. (No pack collection on Easter Sunday, April 20.) Don’t worry if you can’t provide every item on the list; other volunteers will complete the packs. Everyone is encouraged to participate to the extent they can. Consider joining with someone to fill the pack together; a list of those looking for buddies will be kept at the table. Volunteers are needed for the distribution and collection table. Please contact Joyce McLaren (mclaren.joyce@gmail.com).

Wednesday, April 9 • 6 p.m. JUC will build our 14th Metro Denver Habitat for Humanity Home in partnership with other members of Jeffco Partners, at 11474 W. Mississippi Ave. in Lakewood. Along with the homes we’ve help to build here, we have contributed 10% of the funds we raise to build homes through Habitat for Humanity International in 14 foreign countries. This year’s overseas builds are in Nepal, Thailand and Mongolia. We will celebrate this achievement at our annual Empty Bowl Dinner on Wednesday, April 9. The theme will honor our international builds. We ask attendees to bring a crock pot of soup or dessert to share so that the money donated at the door can go directly to building our homes. International recipes are encouraged, but your favorite recipe for any soup is welcome. Defending Environmental Rights in Guatemala How have Guatemala’s indigenous people been impacted by mining and other commercial activities? How do they find out what is going on? Gain insight from Rob Robinson and Stephanie Wells, who have both offered their considerable knowledge and skills to help local environmental partners in Guatemala find answers and defend their threatened environment. Rob’s geotechnical team has evaluated the environmental impact of four precious metal mines in Guatemala on behalf of the indigenous communities living adjacent to the mines. Rob will talk about their work with partners Madre Selva and the Commission for Peace and Ecology, about the results of the evaluations and the mining company responses. Stephanie volunteers as a pilot for non-profit LightHawk. Ten years ago a flight over one of those mines took aerial photos that suggested extensive impact on adjacent communities. Stephanie works with partners particularly in Guatemala to give them the best aerial view of environmental issues that concern them. Encroachment on the rainforest impacts wildlife as well as local people. On one of her missions in January, Stephanie flew a local team over the jungle northwest of Flores in northern Guatemala to attempt to track endangered Macaws. Her presentation will touch on impact the aerial information can have for the partners she worked with. Both presentations will broaden our understanding of conditions in Guatemala.Contacts: Gretchen May (303233-6113; maygwinQ@centurylink.net), Margie Robinson (mcrobins@jeffco.k12.co.us; 303-278-0786).
