Revelation Isn’t Sealed presented by Rev. Eric Banner, Assistant Minister

Sometimes revelation is understood to be something that only happened back then, and over there. But since our earliest religious ancestors, we have affirmed that it is the work of a free faith to test the claims of posterity, and to discover what was never known before, because we believe that revelation is not sealed. Music: Lorian Bartle, guitar; Jennifer Pauley, flute; Rev. Keith Arnold, piano. Sunday, April 19 • 9:15 & 11 a.m. • Infant/toddler care provided.

The Nature of Revelation presented by Rev. Wendy Williams, Senior Minister

Revelation can be one of those other-worldly kind of words, speaking only about the ethereal. What is being revealed to us in the here and now? Music: JUC Choir; Adam Revell, piano. ☛ Looking ahead to… Sunday, April 26: Questions presented by Rev. Eric Banner, Assistant Minister. No great revelation has

come to someone who was too busy to ask great and important questions. And while I don’t believe that simply questioning is an answer, I do believe that good questions leave us more likely to encounter newfound knowledge and understanding. So what kind of questions are useful, and what kind of questions leave us boxed in? Music: Resonate! Teen Choir; Adam Revell, piano.

Child Dedication Ceremony

Dear Members and Friends of Jefferson Unitarian Church,

Golden: Sunday, April 26 • 11 a.m. Evergreen: Sunday, June 7 • 4 p.m.

It has been a true pleasure serving Jefferson Unitarian Church for the past seven years as Director of Religious Education. I have valued my work and time here very much. As I work towards my Master’s level credentialing, I seek to broaden my understanding of faith formation from a district and regional view. As such, I have resigned from my position as Director of Religious Education at JUC.

Rev. Eric Banner will dedicate our newest Unitarian Universalist children into this free faith of which we are a part, and our church will dedicate itself to them. As a community, we raise our children up in the ways of love, compassion, and justice. This is a task for all of us, not just parents and teachers. On April 26 at the Golden Campus and on June 7 at the Evergreen Campus, we celebrate our dedication to our children. If you are a member family with a newborn baby or have older children who have not yet been dedicated into our community, you are welcome to participate in this ceremony. Please contact Rev. Eric Banner (ericbanner@jeffersonunitarian.org).

I am extremely enthusiastic about the future at JUC for children, youth, adults and families. Religious Education Ministry is one part of the church experience, and the work we have done together will pave the way for an even stronger and more sustainable Religious Education Ministry. You have a strong leader in Wendy Williams, who has assembled a fantastic team. Trust in this. I know I do. I will be winding up my responsibilities over the next few weeks, as well as taking the last of my vacation. Rest assured, I will be working with Wendy and all of you to ensure that all responsibilities of this position will be handled.

Golden Circle Worship & Luncheon Friday, April 17

I am grateful for my time and JUC and the opportunity to work with each of you. I wish you the best.

Loan Refinanced Successfully On Monday, March 30, your Board President and Secretary signed off on a new mortgage with great terms! Most important is a big thank you to DeDe Cross, who assisted me with finding potential lenders and navigating the path to success. More info: in order to build the chapel, religious education wing and fully remodel the Mills building (project completed in 2005), the church borrowed money to meet the difference in the cost from the funds raised by the capital campaign. The loan was due this month and required refinancing. Our current debt is just under $560,000, including a no-interest loan from a congregant, a loan at advantageous terms from the Endowment and Memorial Gift Trust Fund and the new loan with Bank of the West locked in for 15 years at a low interest rate! Our debt service is dropping by about 30% with this refinancing (if you want all the nuts and bolts give me a call). We are in the process of transitioning our banking relationship from Wells Fargo to Bank of the West, and expect to save money on fees as well. ~Carol Wilsey, Administrator

Religious Education Ministry Ashley Johnson, Director of Religious Education (ashleyjohnson@jeffersonunitarian.org; 303-279-5282, x18)

Showing Appreciation for Our Educators

Introducing the Communications Team

Within our community, the ones commonly identified as heroes, whether rescue workers, law enforcement, or even teachers, are often considered thankless jobs, with a salary much smaller than they deserve. And at JUC, many of the hardworking people who guide our children through our religious education ministry do so as volunteers. We try to do our best to provide our teachers with not only an outstanding curriculum for the kids, but also with the materials and support they need. So we are showing our thanks by hosting a teacher appreciation celebration on April 26 between services. It will be on the patio if it is nice outside, but will move inside to the chapel if late April weather doesn’t cooperate. Our vision for Religious Education Ministry expands the number of educators and assistants to ensure that the amount of work and time commitment isn’t too cumbersome for anyone. Part of how we plan to turn this vision into reality is by collecting registration information in the spring, so we know how many classes need these wonderful volunteers at the appropriate times. So please take a moment to genuinely thank those involved with shaping the faith and spirituality of our children, and help the ministry by taking a few quick moments to sign up for fall classes. See registration information below.

Have you noticed a greater effort recently to share the happenings of the Religious Education Ministry? It’s part of a new group of Jefferson Unitarian Church’s Religious Education (RE) Ministry called the Communications Team. We believe it is important to share the successes of JUC’s most prolific program. The RE Ministry touches more individuals than any other program in the church, and there is a lot to talk about! The classes and programs serve more than 250 kids. In 2014, Ashley Johnson, Director of Religious Education, brought individuals together to form a Religious Education Ministry Steering Committee. The Committee was built of several positions, one being Communications. Ayrolyn Keady was selected for the steering committee position, and she began reaching out to people who were interested in helping our ministry tell it’s story. Our goal is to tell the story of RE at JUC to four identified audiences: participating families (those who already have children or youth in RE), potential families (this includes anyone - members, potential members, visitors - who are not yet participating, but may be interested now or in the future), participating volunteers and staff (those who are currently giving time to make the ministry work) and potential volunteers (this includes people from all walks of life who are connected to JUC). We communicate with the congregation in a number of ways, from describing the Children’s Worship in the order of service, to creating engaging, beautiful bulletin boards and of course, in this space in the Crier. And with so many wonderful things happening in our RE Ministry, we hope to create other channels in which to communicate with JUC, and are always welcoming volunteers to our team.

2015 Bridging Ceremony and Worship

Sat., April 11 • 6:30 p.m. First Universalist Church of Denver (4101 E. Hampden Ave.)

Please Join Us for Our Last Children’s and Youth Choir Project of the Year: Family Choir!

Come support the district seniors as they bridge into the next phase of their Unitarian Universalist lives! JUC seniors Emily Flora and Max Pivonka will be in attendance. (Other JUC seniors, whose confirmation we did not have at the time of this writing, may also be participating in this worship!).

Rehearsals Start Tues., April 7 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. In this project, we invite choir members to bring one or more family members to participate in six rehearsals in preparation for sharing music in services on Sunday, May 17 (choir members who do not bring family members are welcome to participate also). This project is open to kids from K-8th grade and any family members who would like to come. Rehearsals will take place on Tuesdays starting April 7 from 6:30-7:15 p.m. For more information, please contact Sarah Billerbeck, Director of Music for Children and Youth (billerbeck@ comcast.net).

Successes After receiving a recommendation from Rev. Wendy Williams last year, JUC’s Max Pivonka was identified as a Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Luminary Leader. Because of this distinction, he had the opportunity to participate in a conference call with UUA President Rev. Peter Morales and UUA Moderator Jim Key on youth issues and the UUA. A big thanks to Max for sharing your insights to help serve UUs.

Sustainability Fair

Sponsored By Green Task Force and Food & Nourishment Task Force

The All Church Project has benefitted from great volunteer turnout lately! Each Sunday since early November, two JUC volunteers have helped serve at the Sloan’s Lake Community Church Homeless Breakfast, and several JUCers have donated healthy snacks for the sack lunches provided there. The Lumberg Elementary After School Reading Club is successful thanks to 17 tutors, 6 substitutes and a grant from the Taguchi Social Action Fund for much needed books. In the weeks and months ahead, there are still chances for involvement in the All Church Project. On Wed., April 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., Lumberg Elementary students will celebrate Earth Day by displaying their recycled creations. Simply stopping by to admire the Earth Day dioramas is a great way to support students from the Edgewater Community. Volunteers are also needed for set-up (2 to 3 p.m.) and clean up (6 to 7 p.m.) that day. On Thurs., April 30, help is needed from 3 to 6 p.m. with Lumberg’s Volunteer Recognition Party, and on Sat., May 16, volunteers are needed for the Edgewater Day of Service. If you are interested in learning more or helping with any of these events, please contact Jill Armstrong (jarm444@gmail. com).

Guatemala Scholarship Partners Update JUC members have been supporting education for Mayan students in Rabinal, Guatemala since 2007. We are able to ensure continuing support for students from middle school through their high school graduation because so many members of this congregation have made the commitment to automatic monthly donations. This month, funds have been sent to our local partner, ADIVIMA, to support the new and continuing scholarship students as they begin the 2015 school year. The new students will include five additional recipients supported by the Pioneer Foundation’s donation. Funds contributed to ADIVIMA by members of our partner UU Church in Arlington, Virginia, will support a tutor to work full time with the scholarship students. Thank you for your generosity! As part of the UUSC’s Blue Bucket campaign to bring water rights to people in the US and abroad, JUC raised $196.27.

After sharing a potluck meal, we’ll listen to short presentations by the groups about their mission, history, and typical meetings and topics. Bring a main dish, salad or dessert to share; beverages and paper products provided. Please sign-up at the Sign Up Site. Hosts: Buddhist Sangha & UU Liberal Christians Groups.
