JEFFERY L

09.2016 - 04.2017

Hi, I am Jeffery Lu. I have always been interested in urban planning beyond the small island of Taiwan. I believe planning with humanity and sustainability in mind to make cities become more aesthetical, healthy and humancentered. I love to visualize planning process, I like statistical and spatial analysis, and I have a bit of humor and funny moves that bring joys to your office.

The “land use here does not mean zoning and allowed uses by the city government, but instead presents the current land use of every building. In this way, people can get a closer look of the Beverly Hills neighborhood, including the possible interaction between streets and people.

Zoning Overlay

Since huge part of Beverly Hills Shopping district is retail and commercial area, this map divides the retail and commercial into four subcategories, including office, retail, restaurant and the service. The office category is a place purely for desk task; the retail category is for selling any tangible products; the restaurant category includes bars, cafĂŠs, desert shops and any other eating places; and the service category includes spaces providing services, such as real estate telling companies, banks, hair salons and make up studios. Other uses include Institutional, residential, public space, construction, and vacant buildings. The reason for adding construction and vacant buildings is to show the flow of the urban form, displaying that the city does not remain static, sometimes it withers and other times a new life is born.

User Analysis

Beverly Canon Gardens is a public park located on the South side of the neighborhood, surrounded by The Montage Hotel and Bouchon Restaurant, while two sides of the garden are adjacent to North Canon Drive and North Crescent Drive, forming a rather long

rectangle. The whole garden is about two feet lower than the surroundings, and people need to take steps down to the garden from the buildings and North Beverly Drive. There are two different observations have been conducted in this park and produced into two

graphics. For the first is the user preference, the second is about the interaction between sunlight, shadow and garden users. The analysis applies frameworks from Whyte’s short film “The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces” in order to investigate the attribute

of public space that may be related to user/space interface. The framework includes Sittable Space, Sidewalk/ Street Relationship, Sun, Food, Water, Trees and Plants, and Triangulation.

User Timeline Physical Planning Class Skill Set: Illustrator Location: Beverly Gardens Park

There are much more sign visitors in this park than any other user groups, and they usually like to take pictures with the Beverly Hills Sign. Some of them would also like to take photos with the Morton Bay Fig Tree. Sign Visitors are usually shown in the day-time, while there are still more sign visitors than other user groups until 10 o’clock. There is an interesting interruption at 1 o’clock. It was a group of professional filmmakers shooting the scene of a couple taking pictures in front of the signs. Other user groups include Excersiers, Families, Sitting and Relaxing People, and Bus commuters. Exercisers are people who jog, walk with pets, yoga and do other forms of sports in this park. The peak time of exercisers is from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, when the weather is more amiable and the sun is not as hot as noon time. Families means parents with children playing in the park. Bus commuters include people who wait for the city buses at the bus station or try to hop on tourist buses. The amounts of bus commuters drop at night time due to lesser tourist buses come by.

Different stores have played with different materials in their façades to create and promote their own personalities. This to examine the texture perception and reflection of each store’s façade material.

4

Francis Ching analyzed that Use of highly textured materials likely to have higher senses of the enclosure. In the Rodeo Drive, We can see a spectrum of materials go from unity to diversity. When the texture is more simple and united, it is easy to create the feeling of elegance. There are also many textures with complicated patterns and decorations. Marbles are a common approach to staying elegant while the texture looks diverse, materials.

Built Colors Physical Planning Class Skill Set: Illustrator and Photoshop Location: North Rodeo Drive

North Rodeo Drive is wellknown for all the luxury boutiques. However, it is not only all the brands themselves make the street famous. The store façade colors may also play an important role forming the characteristics of Rodeo Drive. I take the section between Brighton Way and Dayton Way to examine which kinds of color groups stands out with more proportions. There are 19 stores facing North Rodeo Drive in this section, and the color range is based on used colors in each store façade. However, the percentage and proportion of the color groups are only based on the researcher’s visual estimation. The result shows that there are four groups or colors: gold, black, pastel, and others.

Urban Intervention Graphic & Information Class Skill Set: Photoshop Location: Third Street Promenade

Before

Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade consists of three open-air, car-free blocks that are anchored by upscale Santa Monica Place. As a living room for Santa Monica residents, and tourists around the world, there are three goals to achieve through this urban intervention. First is to promote Inclusivity; second is to make the street more fun and interactive; and third to create a continuous natural habitat with limited spaces.

Must Eat in Taiwan

It accepts its bloody past and stands bravely to face an uncertain future. The people are warm and friendly and the culture is cosmopolitan. Best of all, nature is knitted into the city’s very fabric with hundredyear-old trees, riverside paths and wooded hillsides laced with mists, and mysterious paths shoulder-to-shoulder with the urban sprawl.

Taipei is a tough little city whose beauty lies in its blend of Chinese culture with a curious fusion of Japanese, Southeast Asian and American influences.

Taipei is famous for its gentleness, its democracy, and its tolerance.

Small eats, and a lot of them, are the big thing in Taiwan. The culinary philosophy here is eat often and eat well. Sure, there is the internationally accepted three meals a day dining format, but why be so limited when you can make like the Taiwanese and indulge in gourmet snacking at any time of the day?

Vulnerability to Wind Storms in Taiapi City

Vulnerability Index

Windstorms and typhoons impact Taipei’s economy and properties greatly in the history. This study tries to assess the Vulnerability of Taipei City and locate the hot spots. The composition of Vulnerability is based on IPCC 5th report with three elements- Exposure, Sensitivity, and Adaptive Capacity. This study defines the approaches to these elements, rasterizes and analyzes every maps within an index. Finally, I produces the vulnerability map by adding up all maps.
