Portfolio: A Magazine for the Graphic Arts 1-3 Cincinnati, OH: Zebra Press, 1950 & 1951. First edition. Three issues, the complete run of this legendary magazine edited by Frank Zachary and George S. Rosenthal and with art design and direction by Alexey Brodovitch. Each issue is free of advertising, which while it allowed for them to be more graphically pleasing, greatly decreased the financial viability of the magazine. Some of the highlights in Volume 1 include features on Paul Rand, E. McKnight Kauffer, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, and Saul Steinberg, Volume 2 includes an early focus on Ray and Charles Eames, along with articles on Joan Miro, William Steig, wallpaper samples and a look at the Container Corporation art series, Volume 3 includes a look at stereoscopy with 3-d glasses laid in, Henri Cartier-Bresson’s photographs of Asia, Jackson Pollock as photographed by Hans Naumuth and a look at Alexander Calder with images by Herbert Matter. Each issue ia in very good or better condition with all have some slight soiling and minor edge wear and some small creases or tiny tears with the second issue having some foxing along the spine. Still, a lovely set of what is widely considered one of the most important graphic design periodicals of the 20th century. It’s design and execution, with all of the various inserts and type changes and it’s use of different types of paper stock and paper colors, all continue to have a direct impact on magazine production to this day. $1250
