Text by Berendt in German A powerful collection of black and white photographs of many of the legends of jazz but also includes images of the audience and gives a real feel for the times. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket and with the very scarce records which are also in fine condition. Laid in is a promotional brochure for the book and a signed card from Berendt. The best copy I’ve ever seen of this high spot of jazz photography books. SOLD
2. FUKASE, Masahisa Karasu (Ravens)
Tokyo: Sokyu-sha, 1986. First edition. A haunting collection of black and white photographs, many of which were taken from a train window as Fukase went to visit his childhood home after his divorce. The images of ravens mirror his despair. A fine copy in the original glassine with some creases housed in a fine cardboard slipcase. Signed by Fukase. Uncommon signed as Fukase was hurt in 1992 and lapsed into a coma from which he has not recovered. One of the true high spots of Japanese photography books. (Parr & Badger v1, 306) $6500

Jackson, MS: University Press of Mississippi, 1993. First edition. One of only 25 copies issued with an original photograph entitled “Jacob Girls.” Narrative by Lee Smith that accompanies black and white photographs of life in Appalachia. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket in a fine slipcase. Signed by Adams on the title page and on the back of the photograph which is printed on an 8” x 10” sheet with an image size of 7” x 9.” Very uncommon. $2500
4. ARBUS, Diane Diane Arbus
New York: Aperture, 1972. First edition. Posthumously released monograph on this influential photographer which was done for the retrospective of her career at the Museum of Modern Art. Edited and designed by Marvin Israel and Doon Arbus, who was Diane’s daughter. A tight very near fine copy with some faint offsetting to the front endpapers from a newspaper article from 1971 in a very near fine dust jacket with a minute tear to the top of the front panel near the spine. Tokyo: Shuei-sha, 1963. First edition. Legendary collaboration between two of Japan’s artistic giants. A collection of often surreal black and white photographs of Mishima in various poses often with bondage involved. Mishima supplies the preface. A beautifully constructed book that was done by Kohei Sugiura who was one of the more important Japanese graphic designers. A clean very near fine copy with a small Japanese book store sticker on the top corner of the rear free endpaper in a very good original glassine with some chips and tears to the spine ends and bottom front corner in a very good example of the publishers printed cardboard slipcase that has a good deal of wear to the edges and some scratches but is intact. 27. ISHIMOTO, Yasuhiro Chicago, Chicago
Tokyo: Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, 1969. First edition. His second major monograph. Foreword by Harry Callahan. While the book was released in 1969, the images are all from the 1950s and early 1960s and capture an innocence and grace that would soon be a memory in the turbulent later years of the decade. The influence of Ishimoto’s years at The Institute of Design is unmistakable but he has his own voice that is beautifully expressed in this body of work. A clean near fine copy with some minor bumping to the corners in a very good slipcase that has some bumping to the corners and has a split to the top edge expertly repaired. Lacking the scarce obi. Signed and inscribed by both Mandel and Sultan to curator Tom Garver in the month of publication. Laid in is a promotional announcement of the publication of the book that has also been signed and inscribed by both Mandel and Sultan. Additionally laid in is a typed letter from Larry Sultan dated 1975 to Garver talking about the early stages of this book. Easily one of the best possible copies of this book. A very near fine copy in a very near fine dust jacket. This copy was Lotte Jacobi’s personal copy and has been signed and inscribed by Cornell Capa, Mitchell, Ruth Bernhard, Barbara Morgan, Dahl-Wolfe and Carpron. A great SOLD copy of this important anthology.
40. OWENS, Bill Suburbia
San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books, 1973. First edition. His now classic first book. A relatively early photographic attempt to pull back the curtain on suburban life. Owens images are paired with brief captions from his subjects to ultimately form an ironic look at how suburban life might not be so wonderful. A clean very near fine copy in illustrated wrappers with a faint paperclip impression to the top of the front panel. Signed by Owens on the title page. Laid in but originally paper clipped to the front panel is an early typed letter from Owens to Thomas H. Garver who was a curator at the Newport Harbor Art Museum. In the letter Owens presents this book and talks about the images a bit as well as complimenting Garver’s work and asking about possibly doing a show. Signed by Owens and on Straight Arrow stationary. A great copy with a meaningful SOLD association. (Roth 224-225: Parr & Badger v2, 24)
