adaptive urban textile_ M.Arch 1 Tom Verebes parametric studio

This project questions the validation of China’s urban eradication to achieve “modernization”, and attempts to formulate a method, an adaptive urban system that could withstand this trend of urban eradication. By analysing precedents of MEGABLOCKS and the grid structures of different cities in China, metric information would be translated into parameters for parametric design proposal.

The conceptual design derived from our instinctive reaction of the current urban condition of our site. The endless amount of traffic producing a cacophony of noises that demands human to give way to the machines; speeding and rushing through regardless of pedestrian safety, and imprisoning us into a city block. The city grid became a jail for human guarded by killing machines.

1. The design is to propagation the site with fundamental units, or building typologies to form an open-ended collective urban fabric, in attempt to create an intricate and adaptive urban space through the repetitions and connective relationship of these fundamental units.

2. Much like the production of a piece textile, the repetition of interlacing fibre could create unlimited amount of patterns that contour and adapt to local conditions and parameters. 3. After analysing the programming and desire density of the site, the design aims to connect the 9 blocks as a whole while creating subservient but yet distinctive urban space. Liberating human from the imprisonment of the vehicle grid and provide highly charged space formed by the collisions of the units.

psychiatrist’s house_ a sactuary for the damaged soul of a psychiatrist where he/she could resolidify themselves.

a psychiatrist’s job is to observe, absorb, and guide the patients to the path of recovery, to help them realize much of the problems and fear are nothing but illusions that constraints them from moving on. Many of the patient’s problems are transferred to the psychiatrist themselves, so a sanctuary is needed to resolidify their damaged souls, a place for the psychiatrist to recover, away from the public. The house itself will encapsulate the virtue of a psychiatrist, to be considerate of the site and its neighbor, and finding new possibilities within the constraints.

ps ctgu water centre_ 2 week exercise with local Chinese students to develop a master plan for the university

The goal of this proposal is to maintain the existing landscape by integrating a water system into the sloped site and develope a complex for the advance study of water science. The recyclable water system will provide water for and facilities and experiments, to maximize the use of the natural terrain.

jilin vanke development summer internship in ACO Shanghai, worked with team to plan and develop a mix-use complex

The project was to plan and design a mix-use complex in the heart of the Jilin Vanke development. The complex includes 4 residential towers, 1 SOHO tower, 1 office tower, with commercials and public spaces. The design language derived from the local cultural activities. Jilin experiences long and cold winters, but people embraces the natural occurrence of frost and celebrates each year with Light and Ice Festivals.

Scarecrows Studio Intern for Toronto based installation artist, Thom Sokoloski

The Scarecrows was a large-scale public participatory water installation that allows residents to donate glass bottles, filled with their precious memories for the Scarecrows to watch over. Constructed from reclaimed wood and recycled materials, the three effigies float on the lake, unaffected by civilization and time.

false green personal installation art

The notion of “green” and “sustainable” has become a tread, but often they are not entirely understood by the general public, the end users. We even tend to consume such products while lying to ourselves that green is better.

60 48

False Green challenges such notion by contrasting nature with “biodegradable” green straws. ‘Planted’ all across a snow field, the green straws simulate natural grass growing out of earth, but the artificial material reminds one how unnatural it truly is.

61 49

peel The design derived from simple curiosity and habit, how we are attracted to light and the process of finding the source. Peel utilizes the tensile strength of paper and the solidity of wood to create a fluid and dynamic form that encapsulates the mysterious dual property of light.
