Stalls & Knight SIDEWALK

Carbondale, IL

The Stalls & Knight house concept was to create a functional home that follows predetermined constraints regarding size and sustainability. The house is an inspiring icon for the neighborhood as well as city, to where green architecture is heading in the future.

Sustainability Biophilia- Research has shown that homes or workplaces with various views of the outdoor environment are more conducive to mental and physical health. The Stalls & Knight house provides many views of the outdoors to its occupants. Certified Wood Products – Wood that was harvested in a sustainable manner is deemed a “Certified Wood Product.” The Stalls & Knight house will be built using certified wood framing, siding, flooring, and doors. Construction Practices – Construction practices, such as increased recycling, reduction of site impact, low-VOC paints, and air quality maintenance can have a huge impact on the site’s sustainability. Cool Roofs – a reflective or non-black roof can reduce a roof’s temperature by as much as 100°F. By lowering the temperature of the roof, cooling the house can be significantly less expensive. Locally Sourced Materials – Materials from less than 500 miles away are considered “Locally Sourced Materials” and meet LEED Certification standards. Dual-Flush Toilets – It is estimated that a family of 4 can save 7,000 gallons of water per a year using dual flush toilets instead of traditional 1.6 gallon flushing toilets. Photovoltaics - A solar panel system can save hundreds a year on electricity. It reduces environmental impact and removes the house from the grid. Rainwater Reclamation – a rooftop drain and other gutters will lead to a cistern that will hold rainwater. This grey water will be used to flush toilets and water the garden and lawn.
