hammondsport pavilion modular multipurpose glazed pavilion + urban wall transparent layers + perspectival distortion + cantilevered viewing platforms

3

hammondsport pavilion the pavilion acts as both an urban wall and a connector. the viewer is disoriented through the stacked layers of transparent plexiglass, with distorted perspectives forced by the supporting “stick structure.

bottle museum house for broken pieces of bottles + exhibition space + bridge sliced volume extending through “stick forest”

situated above a rock quarry (the natural source from which the bottles are produced), the bottle museum acts as a bridge, supported by a seemingly chaotic structure. the visitor first must navigate through the “forest of sticks” before entering the museum. exhibition spaces are organised linearly, rhythmically interrupted by pools of natural light. first year design studio

the theatre lies horizontal when not in use, and gently tilts forwards when occupied, providing a view of the water before the screen descends. second year design studio

s creche (primary school) study/play analysis + indoor/semi-outdoor/outdoor programming + environmental design studies straw bale bricks + aluminium roof trusses + sliding doors + sliding ceiling panels + musical fence second year design studio

8

s creche (primary school) the letter ‘s’ is a continuous line, curved around two nodes. the s creche shares many of the letter’s dualties, by simultaneously containing and separating spaces. the design allows for private and public, indoor and outdoor, constructed and natural, educational and communal spaces, while also responding to the site and climate of cosmo city in south africa. straw bale bricks are the main building element, costing just 2% of a regular brick while being both durable and fire-resistant. the school is designed to be cheaply, easily, and quickly constructed by unskilled local labourers. second year design studio

new arts centre for columbia university the program is divided within two monumental urban bridges that swing out from a pivotal hinge—like a swiss army knife. below are terraces and urban plazas through which visitors gently descend to the park in the basin of the site. visitors and students alike are encouraged to use the public plazas. transparency allows the public to peer inside the academic facilities. third year design studio

<200m2 housing aggregation modular system + stacking + views lightweight, prefabricated units: bamboo + plywood each apartment unit has a floor area of less than 200 square metres, containing a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living area. units are prefabricated, and stacked on site so that the roof of the apartment below becomes the balcony of the apartment above.

single unit floor plan ~200m2

double unit floor plan ~450m2

12

<200m2 housing aggregation the final iteration of the stacking system results in an aggregation whose floors are never the same. a structural bracing system completes the building. some floors have inward facing apartment units ideal for introverts, while other floors have outward facing apartment units in different directions for extroverts, and those seeking inspirational views of the manhattan skyline. common roof areas are gardens to be cultivated and harvested by the community in an urban farming scheme. fourth year option studio

auditorium + peace studies centre the peace studies centre encompasses 7 religious study classrooms, an auditorium, a library, and exhibition spaces. the auditorium is the west wing, and the religious spaces are divided on two floors within the l-shape. the library and exhibition spaces are in the very south of the site. the first floor has been raised above the ground, such that the ground floor becomes a public plaza.

15

auditorium + peace studies centre the brief called for a total programmable floor area of 20,000 m2, the majority of which comprises the 7 religious studies classrooms, library, and auditorium. earlier iterations began by massing the required areas for each type of space, and organising them on the site. the original concept was a mille-foglie (italian thousand layer cake), but eventually grew into an elongated j-shape.

social music_instrument spatial musical instruments + stage urban parasite+installation+street furniture pipes are an absolutely fascinating object. they are structural, spatial, as well as musical. you can strike them, blow them, let the wind play them, or even speak into them. sound going into one end will be carried all the way to the other. the thesis is an investigation in the spatial qualities of sound. research thesis

spatial musical instruments + stage urban parasite+installation+street furniture this intervention is at once both a stage and shelter for street musicians. it attaches itself to existing street infrastructure (light poles, traffic sign posts). the stage comes in two configurations: an elevated stage for musicians who do not want to interact with spectators, and a lower one for those that do. when not in use, the chime array can be played by both people and cars going by as well as the wind.

social music_spectacle interactive urban stage interactive installation+musical stage+light show+traffic sensor times square’s central location, its iconic status, and the existing seating provided by the tkts booth present an ideal situation to test my ideas. the installation is a spectacular, interactive sound and light show that attracts not only the ears but also the eyes. sound rods are played by both air movement and physical movement. the light rods react to the movement of visitors and traffic alike, as well as decibel levels of local noise pollution. in this way, it not only entertains, but educates. it also reacts to changes in weather by changing its tuning when the rods expands in hot weather and shrink in cold weather. research thesis
