A Majestic Return After a six-year face-lift, the 200-key Peninsula Paris reopens as one of the city’s grands hôtels
T
he Peninsula group burst into Europe this year by resurrecting one of the iconic palaces that made Paris the mecca of opulent hotels – the Majestic. Breathing new life into the belle époque architecture, the Hong Kong-based hotelier oversaw a meticulous renovation while infusing it with contemporary art worthy of a place frequented by the greatest artists of the 20th century (Gershwin, Joyce, Proust, Picasso and Stravinskyamong others). Today, Ben Jakober’s four-metre rainbow-encircled mirror installation reflects the hotel’s inner courtyard to hypnotic effect, while Xavier Corberó’s masterful sculpture Moon River – a thin-sliced marble disc atop a tower of seemingly precariously balanced boulders – overlooks the lobby in homage to the delicate balance of nature and, one imagines, daring endeavours. paris.peninsula.com ♦
