Clean up faded or dead leaves, spray the undersides of remaining foliage with clear water to remove any spider mites or other pests, and apply fresh mulch to the soil surface to prevent tiny potting soil-eating fungus gnats from swarming in the house later.

• Reorganize and neaten your shed before winter. Most unused insecticides and fungicides quickly lose strength after first being opened - safely discard those you won’t be saving until next year.

• Pull up all annuals that have died back, cut back your perennials and remove all fallen leaves from the area to use as mulch. Too many leaves can retain water that could lead to root rot.

• Retain the seeds of all the vegetables and flowers you want to keep in your garden for next season. Keep them in a dry, air tight container (stored in a dark, cool place) until you are ready to plant them.

• One way to collect fallen leaves is to put down large tarps under the trees and drag them to a disposal area when the tarp is full. You can also use the tarp as a leaf bag substitute, easily dragging it around the yard as you fill it with leaves to be emptied in an area for compost preparation.
