Clean Up – Gently! Avoid heavy yard work in the spring until the soil dries out – foot traffic and hard raking can compact or disturb soggy soil and damage tender, new grass shoots. Once the soil is good and dry, give your lawn a good spring cleaning to encourage grass growth and discourage pests and diseases. Remove leaves and fallen debris. Controlling Weeds Spring is the best time to prevent weeds by using pre-emergent weed control, which works by preventing weed seeds from germinating. Your first application should occur just as the forsythia bushes finish blooming – that should stop crabgrass and other weeds before they have a chance to grow. Mowing Sharpen the blade and tune up your lawn mower to make summer mowing a breeze! Begin mowing as soon as your lawn needs it – grass blades do best when you cut no more than a third of the blade’s length at a time.You dont want to scalp your lawn.

Clippings Your grass clippings are essentially a natural mulch for your lawn. Clippings are rich in organic compounds and will help feed your lawn, so don’t bother bagging them up. Just make sure you mow when the lawn is dry so the clippings don’t clump up. Shady Lawns Grass growing in the shade uses less water than a sun-bathed lawn. The exception, though, is grass growing beneath a tree. In these shady spots, the lawn is competing with tree roots for available moisture. You may need to water these shady lawn areas more frequently than ones that are shaded by a structure. Remember to water deeply to encourage deep grass roots. Grassy Plants. In early spring, give your ornamental grassy plants a good haircut to encourage it to grow again and to tidy it up.This means cutting all of the dead leaves and grassy tops right back to just above the crown. The grasses will love this and will send out new growth soon. Sod Newly sodded or seeded lawns need more irrigation than established turf. Water new sod lawns daily for the first week. Then, taper off watering to encourage grass to sink deep roots. For seeded lawns, twice daily watering ensures seedling success. Aim to keep that top inch of soil consistently moist. Keep up daily irrigation until you have mowed the grass at least once (twice is even better).

Europeans were afraid of eating tomatoes when they were introduced. Hernán Cortés brought the seeds in 1519 with the intent of the fruits being used ornamentally in gardens. By the 1700s, aristocrats started eating tomatoes, but they were convinced the fruits were poison because people would die after eating them. In reality, the acidity from the tomatoes brought out lead in their pewter plates, so they died of lead poisoning. Cats have fewer toes on their back paws. Like most four-legged mammals, they have five toes on the front, but their back paws only have four toes. Scientists think the four-toe back paws might help them run faster.
Kleenex tissues were originally intended for gas masks. When there was a cotton shortage during World War I, KimberlyClark developed a thin, flat cotton substitute that the army tried to use as a filter in gas masks. The war ended before scientists perfected the material for gas masks, so the company redeveloped it to be smoother and softer, then marketed Kleenex as facial tissue instead. That tiny pocket in jeans was designed to store pocket watches. The original jeans only had four pockets: that tiny one, plus two more on the front and just one in the back. The word “fizzle” started as a type of fart. In the 1400s, it meant to “break wind quietly,” according to English Oxford Living Dictionaries. Armadillo shells are bulletproof.
