Introduction

Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates is honored to present the Carl Carter Collection of paperweights and art glass at unreserved public auction. Comprising nearly 1,300 individual paperweights and 200 related vases, the Carter Collection is one of the most significant and thorough paperweight assemblages to be offered at auction in recent history. The collection will be sold in three sessions, the present session on April 22, 2021; the second session, which will include his antique weights on October 14, 2021; and the final session to take place in April of 2022. The collection focuses on vintage and contemporary examples, with a foundational subcollection of Paul Ysart paperweights, representing one of the most comprehensive collections of Ysart’s work ever assembled. Carl also placed a heavy focus on Gary and Doris Scrutton’s Parabelle Glass paperweights and has acquired an outstanding representation of the Oregon couple’s work. Also featured are many of the most influential and respected artists of the studio movement, including David Graeber, Paul Stankard, Rick and Melissa Ayotte, Gordon Smith, Ken Rosenfeld, Cathy and Colin Richardson, and Mike Hunter, along with a large selection of Saint-Louis weights. Carl diligently collected these works of art through various means including directly from the artists themselves and through many of the most renowned galleries and dealers in the country, including L. H. Selman Ltd., Leo Kaplan Ltd., William Pitt Paperweights, G. W. McClanahan, and Alan and Helen Thorton, among others. Carl was very meticulous about which examples to choose, as his selections include many of the finest and rarest specimens from each artist, including many unique or artist proof weights from artists such as Mike Hunter, Cathy Richardson, Chris Buzzini, Steven Lundberg, and Parabelle Glass. Additionally, Carl collected many of the most sought after forms in paperweights such as orbs, pedestalled, piedouche, triple-weights, sculptural forms, and cut and cameo examples. There are also many collaborative efforts within the collection including Rick and Melissa Ayotte and Cathy and Colin Richardson. Several examples are cut by the late Ed Poore, including works from David Graeber and Bob Banford.

A magnificent assemblage, the Carl Carter Collection includes some of the finest examples of paperweight art produced over a broad time span, from Classical French examples to contemporary work by living artists. The collection overall represents a veritable mosaic of the paperweight form, and its many examples highlight the technical and artistic evolution that has taken place in the field over the last two centuries.

Carl Carter: A Collector’s Odyssey

I have been collecting glass since I was a little kid and collecting paperweights in particular since 1985. I started learning about paperweights when I was shopping for art glass vases from a dealer who often set up at an Austin antiques show. The dealer had a nice selection of vases and paperweights, so I regularly attended these shows in hopes of finding a new treasure. During these visits, the dealer started talking to me about paperweights and showing me nice examples. I have always loved detail in all types of art forms, so to examine paperweights closely for the first time was very intriguing and exciting. Never before had I been able to hold so much beautiful detail in the palm of my hand and walk around with it. What collector does not love the feel of a paperweight in their hand? I was hooked on the paperweight art form. In large part because of this dealer, in 1986 a few like-minded collectors met together and decided to form The Paperweight Collectors Association of Texas. That dealer had a mailing list, thus making it possible to contact other people who might be interested in learning more about this art form and becoming part of a collecting group. Through these meetings, we learned from each other and shared with each other. Our meetings included getting to know various artists and learning about the different styles of paperweights. But most of all, we learned how difficult it is to make a paperweight, requiring a very high standard of skill and artistic creativity. Paperweights have enriched my life in many positive ways, the greatest of which has been getting to know the strong community of collectors, artists, and dealers associated with the art form. Forming “forever” friendships has been the best part of my collecting journey. I think some of the highest quality paperweights are being created right now, giving us the opportunity to communicate, even collaborate, directly with the artist. Sadly, we don’t really know the artists who made antique weights. They worked for “the factory”, and that is often the only name we know. Now more focus can be directed on the individual artists, allowing them to share their journey. We can talk to them one-to-one and learn about their specific skills and inspirations. One of my personal thrills has been the opportunity to make a few paperweights directly with an artist. Through this hands-on experience, I learned how difficult paperweights are to make.

If someone were to ask me to describe one very fun part about collecting paperweights, I would say it is the “hunt”. Finding a wonderful weight in a dusty little antique shop or at the bottom shelf of a glass case, or exploring a wonderful internet sale or auction, is thrilling, and that sense of excitement is part of what drives the collecting. Now the hunt seems predominantly done at home on the computer, but it is still very much a hunt. For collectors, the internet allows us to shop the world and better communicate with fellow collectors. Overall, I have learned that when there is a common interest, it will bring people together in a positive way. I sincerely hope you enjoy looking at my collection of paperweights and art glass. While it has been bittersweet to let the collection go, I am excited to know that these treasures will now become a part of other people’s lives. My hope is that these pieces will bring as much joy to their new owners as they have to me. Happy collecting! Carl
