FOUNDATIONS Message from the Superintendent Thank you for your interest in the Amphitheater School District. It is a privilege to lead a talented team of educators and dedicated staff. We are working together to prepare students for success in college, career, and life. We are preparing our children for a future that looks very different from when you and I were in school. Students today must be ready to take on the demands of a technology-driven workplace. They must have the ability to think critically, and work as part of a team to collaborate and solve problems. We realize that educating a child is not a one-size-fits-all undertaking. Amphitheater staff and teachers work with parents and students to ensure that each child has opportunities to grow and excel in all subject areas. Our rigorous curriculum is based on standards that provide a consistent framework to give students the tools they need to succeed. We are committed to the Amphi tradition that every student leaves prepared with the skills, knowledge and values necessary to meet the challenges of a changing world. We offer students many opportunities outside the classroom to pursue interests that build character, strength, and community. I invite you to look through these pages. See how teaching and learning begins with caring and curiosity. Sincerely,
Patrick Nelson Superintendent

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Cambridge AcademyTM Amphitheater High School offers this advanced college preparatory and internationally recognized curriculum. AHS is the only traditional high school in Southern Arizona that offers the Cambridge curriculum. The goal of the Cambridge AcademyTM is to make all students career and college-ready. Sophomores who demonstrate college readiness, and pass the necessary board exams can earn the Grand Canyon High School Diploma. This allows them to enter directly into community college or continue in high school, taking Advanced Placement classes that prepare them for admission to a four-year university. Students who complete Cambridge AcademyTM are not only set for success in academics, they have a comprehensive world view and an awareness and appreciation for the fine arts.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Advanced Placement Courses All three Amphitheater District high schools offer students the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced college placement through the Advanced Placement Program. By taking on the challenge of AP courses, students also better prepare themselves for academic success at the college level. Students in AP courses study a rigorous curriculum developed nationally by leading high school teachers and college professors. In addition to studying a subject in-depth, AP students practice critical thinking skills to demonstrate their own reasoning, analysis, and understanding. There are 30 AP courses available to meet the diversity of student interests. A sampling of the offerings include: English Language, English Literature, Computer Science, Environmental Science, U.S. Government/Politics, World History, Psychology, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Music Theory, Studio Art, French, German and Spanish.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS REACH (Realizing Excellence
Through Academic & Creative Help)
REACH teachers are certified and endorsed gifted specialists with specific coursework, training and passion for working with gifted children. At the elementary level, the cluster model is implemented to meet the special needs of gifted students. Cluster groups of gifted students are placed in particular classrooms with teachers supported by the gifted specialist. In middle school we offer students REACH/Honors Humanities taught by the gifted specialist. We also provide honors, advanced and elective classes to challenge gifted students. In high school the focus is on helping students with course selection, college and career planning and REACH/Honors Internship. Gifted students are encouraged to take advantage of Advanced Placement (AP) courses and academic challenges.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Amphi Academy The Amphitheater School District recognizes that some parents may be looking for new or different learning options for their children. As a result, the district has established blended learning academies. The Academy program offers online learning at the elementary, middle and high school level. The Academy staff consists of experienced, highly qualified Amphitheater teachers who are specialists in their content areas. The teachers selected for any of the Academy programs also meet the established criteria of excellence for online teachers. Amphi Academy at Donaldson combines the best of quality online instruction and face-to-face interactions in a Blended Learning model for students in grades 4 – 6. Students in grades 7 – 12 sometimes find themselves in a situation where they cannot attend classes on a traditional campus, and parents are faced with questions about the most appropriate place for their children to attend school. The Amphi Academy Online is an excellent learning opportunity for those students. Amphi Academy Online offers credit recovery and acceleration program options for students in high school.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS No Excuses University Amphitheater District has a network of schools that actively promotes a comprehensive model of college readiness to all students the moment they begin elementary school. No Excuses University schools subscribe to a deeply held belief that all children can and deserve to be successful, no matter what obstacles seem to be in their way. Instead of room numbers, classrooms are identified by college names, with flags representing the college or university hanging on the door. On Friday the students and teachers wear their adopted schools’ colors!

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) AVID is a college readiness system that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance. Students are admitted into AVID in elementary, middle and high school. In addition to their regular core classes, students taking this elective course have a strong focus on organization and teamwork. The AVID program helps students realize their full potential. Tiffany, who is in 8th grade says, “In 6th grade I was not an AVID student, so I didn’t have a plan of what I wanted to do with my life, or even if I was going to go to college. Since I’ve been in AVID, I know I am going to college to become a doctor.” AVID students may lack a college-going tradition in their families, and their success is critical to closing the achievement gap. The formula is simple - raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Special Education Amphitheater Public Schools Special Education Department has a continuum of Special Education services in every school to help children reach their highest potential. We employ proven instructional models to meet each child’s unique needs. Our specially trained teachers and staff help students set goals and then let them see the possibilities. Rillito Center is a place where students with the highest needs learn to be as independent as possible. It is a state-of-the art facility where students use assistive technology to enhance their learning; everything from tablets, to talking books. It is a place where the journey is a series of small steps, with many celebrations along the way.

ENRICHMENT Project Achieve Certified teachers provide expanded learning opportunities after school to support and encourage students’ academic success and build a positive connection to school. Students receive practical tools needed to succeed both academically and socially through high school and beyond. Typical before and after school activities include Breakfast Reading and Math Clubs, homework help, tutoring in math and reading, enrichment activities like sports and special interest clubs, and mentoring.
Fine Arts We know that involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, critical thinking and cognitive ability. We believe students must have many different opportunities to build on those skills. We are especially proud of our Fine Arts Program. Art and Music are offered at all levels, from Kindergarten through High School. Students may choose Band, Wind Ensemble, Mariachi, Choir, Drama, Orchestra and AP Music Theory. Our students consistently place at the top of regional, state, and national fine arts competitions. a b ou t mo r e n r a le To rts Fine Acontact: please

ENRICHMENT Clubs We know that students need opportunities to connect with other children outside the classroom. Joining a club gives children a comfortable place to meet others with similar interests. This often forms the basis for lifelong friendships. Our schools offer a wide range of free clubs for students who want to explore music, math, theater, community service, sports, science, reading, writing, games, problem-solving and much more. Please check with your school of interest for a list of clubs.
Amphitheater students have competed in Odyssey of the Mind for more than 25 years!

COMMUNITY Amphi Foundation Our community knows the importance of making sure children have the tools they need to learn. Since the Foundation began in 1983 it has focused primarily on services that help make it possible for students to attend school and participate in activities. The Amphi Clothing Bank, staffed entirely by volunteers, provides Amphitheater students and families in need with quality used clothing, shoes, and household items, in a clean, caring environment. The Foundation helps defray travel expenses for students competing in regional and national academic competitions. It helps underwrite athletic fee waivers so that every student with the desire has the opportunity to participate in sports. In 2007, the Amphi Foundation launched its most ambitious program, the 21st Century Classroom Technology Initiative, through a generous grant from BHP Copper Inc. The goal is to equip classrooms in every school with interactive, touch-screen SMART Boards, computers, tablets, and document cameras.

COMMUNITY Community Partnerships and Volunteers Community leaders know how important education is to build and maintain a healthy, prosperous generation of students. Amphitheater School District partners with many businesses and organizations in Southern Arizona to make that happen. Our students have important connections with leaders in science, math, engineering, community service, and the medical field. On the high school level, students may participate in an internship program. It gives them the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the field of their interest. We are fortunate to have a network of amazing volunteers. Many of them have spent years in their chosen careers, and they willingly share their expertise in our classrooms. They help students with homework, science exploration, math, career planning, and field trips. They help teachers plan classroom and school events. They are parents, retired people, working professionals, and college students; generously sharing their time and knowledge because they care about children.
The community is an invaluable partner in our students’ education.
Creating innovative learning opportunities - It’s an Amphi promise. 176585_Amphitheater_District_Brochure.indd 17

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS Interscholastic Athletics and Extracurricular Activities Our schools have a tradition of outstanding athletic programs. Students have earned state championships in many sports, including football, track, softball, wrestling, golf and swimming. Every year top athletes head to colleges and universities on scholarship. High Schools have club teams where everyone plays. Middle Schools also have intramural sports. Regardless of the level of play, we know student athletes gain valuable skills like teamwork and leadership. Our students learn that winning is important, but not at the expense of their well-being. Helping young people grow into solid citizens is what Amphitheater District Athletics is all about. m To learn
