Dutchess County Historical Society 2015 Yearbook In its 101st year, the Dutchess County Historical Society is publishing a collection of ground-breaking and delightful essays edited by Candace J. Lewis. This new volume focuses on the American Civil War and its impact on Dutchess County, New York. The topics of the volume’s essays range widely—from essays about the pre-war period and debates about the spread or limits of slavery—from primary materials such as observations by soldiers in their letters from the field and reminiscences many years later by men who had fought to modern commentary by contemporary scholars. Some of these stories are vivid and personal; some present new scholarship. Throughout the articles, there is an effort to throw new light on our understanding of this important period in our history as a nation. In addition, the book presents a section on the general history of the county with essays on a variety of topics such as the history of an apple growing family in Pleasant Valley, a Yiddish camp in Beacon, memories of a young woman who once worked as a secretary for Eleanor Roosevelt, and the genealogy of a family in Rhinebeck.
