Santos & Zurdo es un proyecto de musica del mundo fusion electrónica basado en Costa Rica. El grupo, compuesto por Santos G (Argentina), Zurdo (Costa Rica), y Luigi Jimenez (Costa Rica) combina los sonidos de la música de la India y el funk con diferentes corrientes de la musica electronica como el drum and bass, house, Hip Hop, Glitch, Down Tempo y muchas otras más.

En el 2006 Santos & Zurdo gana el premio ACAM (Asociación de Autores y Compositores de Costa Rica) por su album debút Souvenir (2005). Actualmente el grupo se encuentra en constante producción de material nuevo, realizando giras dentro y fuera de Costa Rica y listos para viajar a Europa, Sudamérica y Estados Unidos. Actualmente se encuentran grabando su siguiente disco.
Han hecho 17 giras internacinales incluyendo New York, Brooklyn, Miami y participado en varios festivales internacionales incluyendo “Burning Man” en Nevada,(U.S.A), “Moonshine Fest” en El Salvador, además de tocar conciertos en Guatemala, Nicaragua y Panama y decenas de giras por Costa Rica y los festivales mas importante del país incluyendo: Envision Festival (todas sus ediciones), Jungle Jam, Festival Nacional e Internacional de la Guitarra, Transitarte, Mundoloco, Festival Nacional e Internacional de las Artes y muchos mas.

Santos & Zurdo Gustavo Cerati, Rorschack (Nevada City California), Heroicos Sobrevivientes (con músicos de Los Redonditos de Ricota y Divididos). Además, un disco como solista (Exilio en Calle Blancos 2009) y decenas de colaboraciones con músicos costarricenses y centroamericanos. Actualmente reside parte del año en California, Argentina y Costa Rica, país donde se encuentra trabajando con nuevos proyectos, tanto a nivel de músico de sesión, como dando clases y talleres, además de presentaciones y giras con Santos y Zurdo.

Comenzó su relación con la música a los 12 años, aprendiendo piano y guitarra en forma autodidacta. Luego estudiaría Sitar y música clásica de la India con Sergio Bulgakov, guitarra jazz rock con Lito Epumer (guitarrista de Spinetta, Pedro Aznar,etc) además de música clásica y folclórica en el conservatorio Manuel de Falla en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. También estudió otras formas de música no convencionales.

Zurdo Santos & zurdo
Fernán Castro –secuencias, samlper, voces, guitarra-Inicia como artista en la calle, sus inicios son como backpack en el 2006 en Israel. Durante su viaje, y de manera inesperada sacaba su guitarra y se disponía a tocar su música, con el fin de recaudar dinero. Actividad que también ejecutó en Europa. En 2001 Comenzó en la agrupación “Parque en el Espacio”, y 2003 se dio la creación de Santos&Zurdo, esto como resultado de los intereses que ambos compartían. Han sido tantos sus años que han viajado por todo Centroamérica, con un total de 18 giras, y además se han hecho presentes en Estados Unidos, siendo en Burning Man Festival sus incursiones más importantes hasta la fecha en esa región.

Transformational Festivals of the World Desde el 2006 y hasta la actualidad trabaja con la agrupación costarricense Editus, en su proyecto “360”, y continúa sus proyectos con Santos & Zurdo, con quien desarrolla la grabación de las últimas piezas, ya con Luigi, integrante desde el 2010 en la agrupación. Además de sus proyectos como artista, dio inicio a la emisora de radio 104.7 Hit en el año 2010, la cual aún sigue al aire, con gran cantidad de seguidores, principalmente del público joven.

Mientras tuve el negocio de los vinos, logré formar junto a unos amigos una banda de salsa que se llamó La Pinguilla Band de Costa Rica, con el tiempo pasó a llamarse Son Urbano. Fue la primera banda seria que tuve, pues éramos una orquesta grande y de músicos jóvenes, todos teníamos cerca de 20 años y con una escuela musical bastante roquera. Tocábamos salsa clásica, de los 70’s, de la escuela de La Fania y Rubén Blades. Fue una gran escuela musical... ...Toqué después con Los Bespas, una banda de funk rock. Al mismo tiempo formé una banda de electro/rock llamada The Flying Pancake. Toqué con Felipe Pérez, cantante de 424, en su proyecto FLPPRZ Wagon. Formé junto a Lucho Calavera, cantante de El Parque, el proyecto Lucho Calavera y la Canalla. Actualmente me dedico a mis proyectos Patterns y Santos&Zurdo. En estos momentos me encuentro componiendo junto a Patterns lo que será nuestro nuevo album, y esperamos entrar pronto al estudio a grabarlo. Además, estamos grabando el material más reciente de Santos&Zurdo, el cual creemos que puede salir para el último trimestre de este año. También me encuentro grabando algunos proyectos alternativos, uno de ellos de trip hop junto al productor Charlie Fariseo, y finalmente trabajo como coproductor del Festival Envision.

Empezó a tocar a los 18 años de edad. Durante todo este tiempo ha tocado bajo eléctrico, el cual es su instrumento base. Además estudió un poco de percusión al investigar ritmos latinoamericanos. A los 20 años trabajaba como importador de vinos españoles y chilenos y distribuía algunos productos gourmet. Paralelamente se desarrolló también como asesor inmobiliario y estuvo trabajando en bienes raíces. Fue hasta los 26 años de edad que decidió enfocarse totalmente en la música.

Los Festivales de Transformación son una experiencia que vale la pena vivir, pues cambia la perspectiva de la realidad cotidiana y quiebra un poco el tipo de estructura en la cual hemos sido criados; es casi sin estructura por llamarlo de alguna manera. Al mismo tiempo nos permiten observar que hay diferentes maneras de vivir, de estar en sociedad, que podés aprender de los demás a nivel artístico, humano y espiritual, y conectar con la gente que te rodea sin ningún tipo de prejuicios o señalamientos... abrir tu mente, quebrar moldes, expandir tu conciencia. De envision a burning man Sobre Envision, cuéntenos sobre su participación como organizador y como músico. “En Envision, como coproductor me encargo de Costa Rica y Latinoamérica, soy buscador de talentos, y realizo todo lo que tiene relación con la prensa a nivel latinoamericano. Además de Relaciones Públicas y logística. Como músico me ha tocado vivir al mismo tiempo la producción del festival, como artista. Una de mis mejores experiencias este año fue ser invitado a un concierto junto a Tommy Sidecar, baterista y productor de Beats Antique, una banda norteamericana que admiro desde hace varios años. También tuve una gran presentación junto a Patterns y Santos&Zurdo dió uno de los mejores conciertos que ha dado como artista y dentro de la plataforma del festival.”

¿Cómo fue su experiencia en Burning Man con Santos&Zurdo? “Burning Man es una experiencia increíble, es un festival único en esencia y estructura, donde se puede experimentar con diferentes escenarios y géneros musicales, es un mundo totalmente diferente a cualquier cosa antes vivida. Con Santos&Zurdo nos permitió darnos cuenta de que nuestra música tenía un gran público a nivel internacional, eso nos permitió poder expandir mas nuestras influencias musicales en el momento de estar componiendo nuevos temas. También nos unió mucho como banda, como familia. En el momento en que tocamos ahí fue extremo, estábamos en una de las tarimas más importantes del festival llamada Fractal Nation, tocando viernes a la una de la mañana.... la temperatura era cerca de los cero grados... toda una experiencia.”

“I was born and grew up in Montana, USA where I lived until I was 18. I now live on coast of Northern California close to the ancient redwood forests of the Pacific Northwest. I started photographing at the age of 15 after my father had given me my first camera. I always enjoyed looking through nature photography books and became intrigued with discovering what it was that makes a picture impactful. I’ve worked since then, studying, experimenting, playing and exploring this art of capturing light to further push my creative potential. My initial love for photography came from the desire to capture the beauty in nature I saw around me while growing up in and around the pristine mountains, prairies and farms of Montana and Colorado. Today though, I practice almost all types of photography, from portraiture to landscape, macro to travel, I enjoy it all. Burning man and festival photography in general, have allowed me to encompass a little bit of each into the experience. “

I’m pretty sure Burning Man is the biggest festival I’ve been to. I remember watching the temple burn my first year and thinking how amazing it was to be sharing it with 40,000 people!. I’ve shot many music festivals on the west coast, but nothing with the international draw and diversity of Burning Man. It really brings an amazing collection of unique individuals and groups.

I can’t really imagine being a spectator and not taking photographs. I’ve shot the last five years and have so many treasured images I’ll always enjoy looking at. it’s hard for me to relate to just walking around seeing all the amazing things yet not photographing them, it would be hard. Although, with the amount of photographers at Burning Man, it is one of the festivals you could skip bringing a camera to and probably still see a majority of the festival later through others eyes.

As far as a priority for what I shoot, I make it a point to be up for sunrise and sunset light. Usually I’ll be riding my bicycle around as the sun rises or sets allowing me to freely slide my compositional elements around in the frame as I see fit from my peddling position. The bike is a wonderful element for positioning yourself compositionally in the vast expanse of the desert floor. The dust, and atmospheric
haze it creates, are probably my favorite part about shooting the event. The mix of artistically created foreground sculptures, temples, costumes and of course fire with the swirling dust and mountain light alchemically copulate into photo magic. It’s almost overwhelming the amount of shots that begin to present themselves as the light and dust mix with the festive energy.

Transformative is one word for it. I think it really depends on what you’re looking for when you go to something like this. If you want to just party and celebrate you can do that, but if you want to experience a space where you can be free and open about who you are and share with others in a rediscovery of your own inner desires, then you may receive a transformative experience.
Transformational Festivals of the World I think any festival can be transformative. Anytime you get a bunch of people celebrating together through art and music, you’re likely to experience new levels of awareness that carry with you and help improve your experience of life.

Marco Cochrane (born 1962) is an American sculptor born in Venice, Italy, best known for his large-scale steel sculptures of nude women. His piece Bliss Dance (2010) reaches 40 feet in height and, after being introduced at Burning Man,was given a location on San Francisco’s Treasure Island,where it remained until May, 2015. Bliss Dance will move permanently to The Park on the Las Vegas Strip starting April 4, 2016. It weighs more than 7,500 pounds.Truth is Beauty (2013) which rises to 55 feet,was a response to the rape and abduction of a childhood friend, will be moving to her permanent location at the San Leandro Tech Campus in the Fall of 2016. R-Evolution (2015), the third and final sculpture in The Bliss Project series debuted at Burning Man in 2015 and has not yet found a permanent home. Together Bliss Dance, Truth is Beauty and R-Evolution form The Bliss Project, a trilogy of sculptures of the singer and dancer Deja Solis.

The event organizers, and in turn the DMV, have set the bar higher for what it deems an acceptable MV each year, in effect capping the number of Mutant Vehicles. This is in response to constraints imposed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which grants permits to hold the event on federal property, and to participants who want to maintain a pedestrianfriendly environment. Vehicles that are minimally altered, and/or whose primary function is to transport participants, are discouraged or rejected.

One of the criteria the DMV employs to determine whether an application for a proposed Mutant Vehicle is approved is “can you recognize the base vehicle”. For example, if a 1967 VW van covered with glitter, dolls’ heads, and old cooking utensils can still be recognized as a VW van, it is considered to be “decorated not mutated” and is less likely to be approved. This criterion led to the exclusion of some “Art Cars”, which historically have been a staple of the event. There were over six hundred approved Mutant Vehicles at the event in 2010.

“ Con Burning Man 2015 apliqué para un proyecto formal de arte. El proyecto consistía en sacar 880 retratos en Polaroid durante los 8 días del festival. Con mucha sorpresa logré conseguir el aval de Burning Man y la ayuda de Impossible para el film. El proyecto no lo pude terminar, pues el desierto y sus condiciones son brutales para el equipo. Al tercer día ya ambas cámaras no funcionaban. Supongo que ese no es el lugar para un par de cámaras de 40 años. Sin embargo completé cerca de 200 retratos, 200 tesoros. Cada foto un recuerdo y una pequeña historia.” “With Burning Man 2015 I applied for a formal art project. The project was to draw portraits on Polaroid 880 during the 8 days of the festival... i could not finish the project because of the desert and its conditions, not good for the camera.”

Compré mi primera Polaroid en 2009 en el mercado de las pulgas en La Sabana por ¢4500 colones, no podia creer que todavía funcionara. Polaroid había cerrado en 2008 y no había film. Solamente quedaba un lote que fue comprado por Urban Outfitters, quienes lo vendieron hasta acabar existencias. Compraba film, lo más que podía, cuando tenía oportunidad y me fui enamorando del formato. Soy un perfeccionista y la Polaroid me permitía no pensar tanto en aspectos técnicos y solo disparar. Luego empezó la escasez y se volvió casi imposible conseguirlo.

“Tengo poco tiempo de haber comenzado a enfocarme con más seriedad en la fotografía. Tuve una novia fotógrafa, ella fue quien me despertó la curiosidad por la foto, en especial la foto análoga, incluyendo las polaroids. Ella me regalo mi primera cámara, una Holga de 120mm y comencé tomando fotos mientras la acompañaba en sus proyectos, eso fue en el 2008.”

“A principios del 2011 conocí de un proyecto que se había formado en Holanda llamado “The Impossible Project”. Los fundadores Dr. Florian Kaps y André Bosman se conocieron en 2008 en el evento de cierre de la fabrica de Polaroid, y decidieron poco tiempo después comprar la maquinaría de la ultima fábrica y empezar a fabricar film para las cámaras. Los primeros cartuchos se comenzaron a vender a principios del 2010.
For Burning Man 2015 I applied for a formal art project. The project was to take 880 portraits on Polaroid during the 8 days of the festival. With much surprise I was accepted and got the help of Impossible for the film. The project was not able to finish because the desert and its conditions are brutal for the camera. On the third day both cameras were not working. I guess that’s not the place for a couple of 40 years cameras. However I completed about 200 portraits, 200 treasures. Each photo a memory and a little story.

Cuando supe que había un movimiento para mantener con vida las Polaroids me interesó mucho. Me puse en contacto y he estado usando su film y colaborando con ellos desde entonces. En ese momento no tenía idea qué quería hacer con las fotos. Pero lo disfrutaba y empecé a acumular material. Me encantaba el aire de nostalgia y los colores del film. Me encantaba los resultados inesperados y el reto de buscar, reusar, las fotos que salían malas para formar historias y mosaicos. Nunca desecho una foto, ni siquiera las que salen veladas. Y salían muchas, las primeras versiones del Impossible Film eran bastante malas. El contraste y el color no era ni cercano a la calidad del film original y duraban hasta 5 veces más tiempo en revelarse. Además, solo vienen 8 fotos en lugar de 10 por cartucho y el costo era y sigue siendo de $25 por cada 8, lo cual es muy caro. Cuando tengo una idea para un mosaico de 24 fotos, y no queda bien, es una prueba que cuesta $75.”

Transformational Festivals of the World “2015 fue mi primer año en Burning Man. Siempre me llamo mucho la atención el festival, pero me costó mucho dar el paso. Había ido a muchos festivales y no me terminaba de convencer, pero un día simplemente me salió la oportunidad, cogi las cosas y me fui. El 2015 fue un año muy difícil para mi y pensé que me necesitaba renovar, pero siendo honesto fue más un escape que otra cosa. Nunca pensé volver, lo veía como algo que quería hacer una vez en mi vida, como cuando alguien decide ir a Machu Pichu o hacer una maratón Pero cuando llegué y comenzó a correr el tiempo todo cambió: ¡ese festival te toca!. A pesar de estar en el lugar más inhóspito que uno pueda imaginar, donde hace calor infernal o un frío inmanejable por las noches, donde hay constantes tormentas de arena y las duchas son un lujo, los sentidos están siendo excitados en todos los niveles, en todo momento. El escenario en el desierto es muy mágico, con los mejores amaneceres que he visto en mi vida. No existe un horario, no existe un plan. Todos los días uno se levanta y se tira al desierto a ver qué encuentra. Todo lo que comes y tomas es regalado, todo es inesperado y espontáneo. Todos los días fueron diferentes.La noche y el día ambos igualmente impresionantes pero en todo momento se respira la misma vibra. Nunca conocí gente más amable. En BM se te estalla la llanta de la bicicleta y hay al minuto 10 personas viendo cómo te ayudan. Y aunque explores todo el tiempo siempre a la vuelta ves fotos o hablas con alguien y terminas diciendo… ¿en serio?, pero ¿donde estaba eso?.”

Voy con venganza, ya que no pude terminar mi proyecto el año anterior. Me encantaron los resultados de los retratos, por lo que voy a dedicar parte de mi proyecto a eso. Pero ahora me estoy enfocando mucho en los mosaicos y ya tengo varias ideas de lo que quiero hacer este año en Burning Man. Es un proyecto muy ambicioso y difícil, ya que quiero hacer mosaicos grandes de hasta 49 polaroids. Todavía estoy en proceso y no he enviado el proyecto todavía. Quiero hacer más ensayos acá en Costa Rica antes de tomar la decisión final.

As long as I can remember, I always have been crazy about pictures. My dad was a real amateur photographer, taking many pictures of the family and putting them in Albums. He borrowed me his precious Minolta camera to take with me on vacation. I really enjoyed the framing and composing and was kind of surprised that I was able to take so many bad photos. Eventually I was hooked. I took on the digital age and made my switch to professional photography in 2010. Today I shoot with a Canon 5Dmark III. Besides my personal projects, my photography is focused on Events, conferences and weddings.

At the festival, i had no priorities to take to, I just shot what I wanted or was able to see at that moment. Standing in front of the stage, amongst the jumping crowd, with my camera in hand was a huge risk for my gear. I had to be aware all of the time to protect my camera from flag blows, all kinds of shocks and beer. But the results were rewarding.

I was there as a spectator but couldn’t resist the opportunity to photograph such a crazy scene. The difference between the spectator and the photographer is that the latter always sees with a photographic eye. You can’t help it, it’s there every time; some excellent light or an impressive composition, time to take out the camera and shoot. Maybe the spectator can enjoy it more, ‘unconditionally’.

Realmente no me sentía segura de mi misma para meterme de lleno a nivel comercial, pero a inicios de este año, en enero, es donde empiezo un nuevo proyecto con mi novio,en donde ofrecemos desde retratos más sencillos hasta trabajos más elaborados, como bodas, lookbooks, etc.

Me gustan las fotos orgánicas, naturales, llenas de mucho color, detalle, enfoque y movimiento, que reflejan lo cotidiano, la vida de los jóvenes, sus rutinas diarias, los viajes, paisajes, las nuevas experiencias, el amor, el sexo, las amistades, el mal comportamiento. Siento mucha afinidad por retratar mujeres, realmente creo que entiendo nuestro cuerpo, expresiones, y sentir, y combinar eso con moda, y buen gusto, es allí donde he encontrado mi fortaleza.

Participar como fotógrafa en Envision Festival ha sido toda una experiencia, ¡como bien dice su lema!. Recuerdo que el primer año asistí como aficionada, pues quería practicar en un evento donde el movimiento es algo constante, y fue todo un reto. Eso fue en el 2014 cuando apenas compraba mi cámara. Fui totalmente sola y estuve 2 días seguidos con únicamente un sleeping bag, dormía unas cuantas horas, y seguía disparando, tenía mucha adrenalina por estar ahí. El 2015 fue increíble, pues tuve la acreditación como parte del equipo de media, por lo que trabajé muy fuerte para sacar un album de al menos 400 fotos, y este obtuvo muy buena aceptación por parte de los asistentes. Este año 2016 fue algo diferente, ya que me permití disfrutar de la fiesta detrás y delante del lente, y muchas cosas cambiaron, pude experimentar satisfacción no solamente capturando momentos, si no que logré entender la felicidad que notaba en las personas cuando las fotografiaba, porque yo estaba ahí con ellos también.

Este año en el festival cambié un poco mi enfoque y decidí solo fotografiar mujeres: movimiento, atuendos, accesorios, etc. Algunos han criticado el album que de hecho aún no termino de editar, alegan que mi enfoque es solo a las mujeres, las cuáles son jóvenes sexys con rostros hermosos, en las boobs y el movimiento corporal. Soy artista y siempre me quiero superar, para mi no era satisfactorio volver a tomar fotos como las del 2015, ya lo había hecho, lo experimenté y supe como era, por lo que quería traer un poco más de mi estilo a este trabajo, y por qué no, dar de que hablar. Nunca se podrá quedar bien a todo el mundo, por lo que muchas personas tomaron el lado positivo de este trabajo y agradecieron la delicadeza, amor y pasión que le dedico a cada foto de manera individual. Realmente fue una oportunidad de experimentar y enfocar mi estilo a un evento, que bien sabemos hay muchos fotógrafos, pero donde es importante destacarse, y eso solamente se logra reflejando personalidad. Envision es tan llamativo para mi, ya que parte de la inspiración la encuentro en el

Afrika burn • Shanna Jones The Burning Man mantra of “radical self-reliance” is alive and well here at AfrikaBurn, a nine-year-old festival located in a desert area about 250 miles outside of Cape Town. Bring everything you need, as only ice is sold at the event, and according to its Eleven Principles, unlike Burning Man, this isn’t a barter economy, it’s a gift economy, “about giving without expecting anything in return,” it reads. There are dramatic art installations (including San Clan, its take on the Man) and mutant vehicles, but as the 10,000 or so attendees skew younger than Burning Man, expect fewer mellow meditation pits and more of a party atmosphere.

Afrika burn is the best party on earth!. A desert platform that allows you to express yourself in any manner that feels right for you, as long as you are respectful to the participants around you. You can wear anything you like, or nothing at all. There are no rules, other than the 11 commandments, which include “give without expecting anything back”, an urge to practise “radical self-reliance”, and “respect the environment by leaving no trace”. It’s an incredible experience to be a photographer at this festival, where in every moment of every day, you are delivered the most astonishing, beautiful, hilarious, crazy, extraordinary scenes that beg to be captured immediately.

Universo Universo Paralello translates to “parallel universe” in Portuguese. It’s the best, most concise way to describe the feeling of this utopian Brazilian music and arts festival that takes a New Year’s Eve celebration and stretches it into a 10-day psychedelic, trance music affair. Since 2003, thousands have clamored each consecutive year through the mountains of the Brazilian highlands to reach the sands of Pratigi Beach. The festival takes place here on a coconut farm near the town of Ituberá in the state of Bahia. Somehow untouched by the growing tourism around it, Pratigi Beach still seems like the most remote place on Earth, especially one designated for a rave at the end of each calendar year.

Yet, nestled somewhere along the mangrovesheltered, beachside locale, is where Brazil’s trance scene actually took root. Between the highly caffeinated matÊ tea and the hallucinogenic ayahuasca fertile in the Amazonian region, this type of electronic music seems native, almost natural.

A ideia de criar um Coletivo para fotografar os Festivais surgiu da necessidade de unir vários fotógrafos frequentadores nesses Festivais e colocar uma ordem para as publicações, criando com isso uma nova estética para a apresentação desse rico e vasto material produzido nos Festivais.

Nossa primeira experiência coletiva foi em 2011/12 para o réveillon no AHO Festival, de lá para cá fizemos diversos Coletivos Fotográficos. Além do Universo Paralello edições 12 e 13, temos quatro participações no Festival Mundo de Oz, Samsara Festival com 3 edições, Soulvision Festival com 2 edições, Heartdance Brasil 1 edição, Shivaneris 1 edição e na última edição em 2015 no Ritual Goa Gil.

Future projects are many. We are working on three very important actions for Coletiva.a.mente, but I can´t reveal them... soon everyone will know!.
Hidden away in the English countryside, this event has grown from fewer than 1,000 to almost 30,000 “gardeners” since its inception in 2004. Dance, play in the lake, listen to a Guerilla Science lecture, get in the middle of a paint fight, and bring your Wellies for the frequent sprinkles (and occasional downpours). Just don’t let the tame “garden party” name fool you: There are also plenty of debaucheries afoot in this camp, once described as a “forest rave” and “hedonistic haven.”

My name is Nick Caro. I am a freelance commercial photographer from the UK working both nationally and internationally. I currently live with my family in Rutland about 100 miles north of London where I lived previously. I have been a professional photographer since eight years ago. I shoot all kinds of subjects and styles. Much of my day-to-day work is commercial/advertising and editorial work but I also try to join my great love for music (especially reggae and dub) with photography.
I have been lucky enough to work with some great artists and clients including the Wu Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killer, UK dance music pioneers Orbital, Notting Hill Carnival reggae veterans Channel, One Sound System and dub legend himself Lee “Scratch” Perry. I’m currently working with the legendary reggae vocalist Max Romeo and UK producer Daniel Boyle on Max’s new album “Horror Zone”. I’m very lucky to be able to combine work and play in this way. Not many people have that luxury.

My first proper festival, like so many others in the UK I’m sure, was Glastonbury back when I was 17. Back then Glastonbury Festival was a lot less policed and controlled than it is today, and was perfectly usual for large numbers of people to jump the fence and get in for free. Some friends and I heard about the festival from our older acquaintances and decided we should hitch down to try our luck. After we finally got there we had a few miles of crawling through fields, hedges and ditches to reach the fence in darkness and finally found a guy with a ladder set-up against the fence and charging £20 per person to use it. Things have changed hugely these days though. Festivals are big business and massive changes to public safety and policing laws means that organisers have to be very serious about dealing with that kind of thing. Some say it’s spoilt the atmosphere of some festivals but fortunately for me I now get to go in the front gate and things are much easier.

My main subject to cover for Secret Garden Party is the Arts. This is basically documenting all the sculptures, installations and visual art pieces that get commissioned and built for the festival that year. Arts and visual spectacle have always been a very large part of the Secret Garden Party and are a big part of the landscape of the festival and the experience it creates. Because SGP is lucky enough to have a permanent home, some of the art pieces live on site permanently all year round but the majority are newly commissioned each year by the Arts curator to fit with that years theme.

It’s difficult to explain the concept of the Secret Garden Party without actually experiencing it for your self really. It’s a music festival on one hand but the music isn’t the defining thing. To me at least, the music is more there to provide the sound track to your experience. SGP is a participation festival. It’s very much about being involved. Roaming dancers and performers are everywhere, bicycle powered sound systems pull up randomly and a full-on dance party will just magically appear before you eyes. Mud wrestling and competing in the Dance Off are also always popular but the infamous SGP Sunday afternoon Paint Fight is always one to attend.

I guess in the UK we’d call this kind of event a “Boutique Festival”. SGP were one of the first-wave of Boutique UK festivals and their formula for putting on high production value visually stunning events with a great music programme for low (comparatively) crowd numbers to make the event intimate and memorable has proven a great recipe for success. The joke is of course, that the
Secret Garden Party is no longer a secret because it has become so well know and respected both in the UK and internationally. Last year a friend of mine who is one of the Directors for Splore Festival in New Zealand came over to the UK and attended SGP to get the lowdown and see what all the noise was about, so the reach and influence of SGP is quite astounding really.

Of course I’ll be going to SGP again this year. It’s been locked in my diary since SGP last year. I’m also shooting for an excellent up-and-coming electronic/dance music festival called Noisily Festival and for the sublime Wilderness Festival, both again, highproduction value, intimate festivals focused on being involved with a excellent musical programme. Definitely two other events to look out for if you’re in the UK this summer.
