Interior designer Zoe Murphy from Zoe Murphy Creative Office is a force for colour, art and unique design. Some of the most outstanding homes that we see at Jellis Craig are often those anchored deeply in individuality, and in no home is this more apparent than Interior Designer Zoe Murphy’s stunning (and recently sold by Jellis Craig Stonnington) heritage Toorak home.
We visited Zoe in her home to discuss her tips on how to make your bedroom a cosy retreat during all seasons plus how to style open shelving.

FEATURE ARTICLE
An interior designer’s guide: transforming your bedroom into a cosy retreat and mastering the art of open shelving.
How to style open shelving
The tried and tested rule of odd numbers resounds when styling open shelving. This is because things arranged in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable and effective than even-number things. Most of the time I don’t even realise I’ve used 3, 5 or 7 objects until I’ve taken a step back and taken it all in! Objects grouped in 3 seems to be the magic number, they really do flow and appeal visually.
Begin by placing three items on each shelf, then stand back and decide what, if anything, needs adjusting – standing back and reviewing the vignette after each movement you make is essential. Layering two items melds them together and they become one item – such as a book and a candle.
Objects are pleasing to the eye when they are arranged in triangles.
A group of objects with a variation of heights is also important for filling your space and adding interest. Trays and books are my goto grounders and the point at which I always start. When you have a group of small items – say a candle, ceramic bowl and object – they can look lost on a big shelf so using a big tray or a stack of books as the basis for this arrangement can be a wonderful way to start. This can also add one more point of interest to your shelf and can really help to pull everything together. Ensure you also vary the height of the items displayed – don’t feel limited by the size of an object you want to display, instead try setting it on a riser to achieve your desired height.
Whilst height and size variation in your decorative objects is key, it is important to maintain some consistency. I achieve consistency through colours. A steady rhythm of colour spread throughout your shelving will look cohesive. I like to colour group shelves in their tonal value, sometimes adding a contrast colour for impact.
How to make your bedroom cosy
A calm and cosy room starts with the colour you paint your walls and ceiling. I always opt for darker, moody colours as opposed to white or light colours. Dark moody blues and green greys are a luxurious way to create a calming atmosphere. Just like the rest of the home, layers of lighting are essential in the bedroom. Try to avoid too many overhead lights and instead keep light directional for tasked areas such as over drawers and cupboards. Wall lights are also a great choice for beside the bed for reading as they free up space on your side tables to allow for candles and books.
I always opt for a luscious floor to ceiling curtain in a dark colour which creates softness and cosiness. In my master bedroom I’ve chosen a dark, green opaque linen which blocks out light and the length is designed to pool on the floor – adding to the luxurious mood of the room. In terms of carpet, a high pile, soft, furry carpet is very inviting. I love the transition from floorboards throughout the rest of the home to high pile carpet in the bedrooms – it makes for the perfect transition from living space to sleeping space.
A hero art piece that is tranquil and soft can have a calming effect within the space. Finally, dressing your bed in warm linen matching sheets with a couple of sculptural cushions is a lovely way to finish off the room.

Behind the design:
A delicate control of visual thresholds
Discover a harmonious blend of Victorian elegance and contemporary innovation with this beautiful home nestled in the heart of South Yarra. We sat down with the current owners, Ruth and Cormac, to discuss the secrets behind the thoughtful build, lovingly designed to grow with their family and enjoyed throughout all seasons.
jelliscraig.com.au In Focus | Winter 2023 06
25 Fawkner Street, South Yarra
Ruth, together with her husband Cormac, desired a home that could meet their family’s growing needs and enjoy Australian indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Their pursuit of a larger home aligned perfectly with the arrival of 25 Fawkner Street, and commissioned architects Workshop Architects, to create the family home of their dreams.
The young family recently decided to relocate to Ireland to connect with their relatives but they couldn’t be happier with the outcome of the build and the time they spent and memories they made at Fawkner Street.
The modern extension was designed by Workshop Architects. What was the brief for this project and what aspects of the build were most important to you?
We worked with Workshop Architecture on our previous house, so we established a great working relationship with James and Peter, whereby we all understood and trusted one another. We asked them to design something with wow-factor, something striking and special – but also something that would work for us in a practical way as a family. They delivered both in spades and the renovation was shortlisted for the Houses Awards in 2018.
For simplicity, we wanted to work within the existing envelope of space from the 1980s extension. Peter had an idea based on Japanese architecture, which meant that you had to move around a space to see the different elements of it. As they said;
Circulation as the primary idea, it seeks to entice the occupant from one space to the next. Axial views are deliberately denied, inviting the viewer to discover that which lies beyond.
So, when you walk down the central hallway, you don’t see the garden immediately, you must move further to open the vistas. The opacity of the double-height windows creates a completely different feel when compared to ‘glass box’ renovations. Whilst our space is square-ish, the design creates a lot more visual interest and unique perspectives.
jelliscraig.com.au In Focus | Winter 2023 07
Tell us about the use of wooden panelling throughout the home and its significant impact on the overall aesthetic and atmosphere. Why did you choose that feature?
The first house we renovated in Nicholson Street contained light-coloured wood panelling with a darker wood contrast. That suited that house which was south facing with smaller rooms. When we came to Fawkner Street - with all the light and space that it had - I suggested to James that we reverse it. Melbourne experiences dark winter days and bright sunny summer days. The panelling creates warmth for the winter and a counterpoint for the light in the summer. The carpenters were masterful, and the staircase in particular is a special feature of the house.
Were there any unexpected discoveries or hidden gems that were revealed during the renovation process?
The house has a cellar! If wine is not your drop, the space is handy for storage and keeps everything very dry. We also co-opted it to hide away all our AV equipment, which is connected to the cabling that was installed throughout the whole house. This meant that we could use the storage in the house in a more effective manner. Also, under the stairs is a lovely big space which the kids made into a cubby at times, so we put a light fixture in there.
jelliscraig.com.au In Focus | Winter 2023 08
Were there any particular design considerations or materials used to bridge the transition between the Victorian house and the modern extension?
Yes! The old extension had double doors that lead through to the rear of the house. They were not original and were quite flimsy. Right at the very end of the renovation, James came up with the idea of the rolled steel archway in the hall. It was tricky to install, but I was delighted with how it came out and how it marks the threshold between the old and the new space. It was a brilliant idea, the cherry on top. Over the course of the two renovations, I learned that the thresholds really matter. Our architects worked hard to bridge those thresholds and make them appear seamless.
What are three words you would use to describe the property?
Design-led Multi-functional Spectacular
Can you discuss the overall impact the renovation has had on your daily life and the functionality of the home?
For the time we lived there it gave us a beautiful space to live and be in as a family. I am jealous of the new buyers of 25 Fawkner Street; they are lucky indeed.
The pool was a great space to play in with the kids, we spent hours in there. We also threw parties and opened up the whole house. On the AV front, we installed a speaker system that meant we could play music anywhere - including the pool speakers. Another useful aspect is the curtain we put around the mezzanine playroom. This makes it possible to be used by guests as a bedroom or for a sleepover with a gang of kids.
25 Fawkner Street, South Yarra is on the market with Jellis Craig Stonnington. See page 15 for more.

My Neighbourhood
with Adrian Petrucelli
What was your first job growing up and what prompted you to start your career in real estate?
At age 14, my first job was at Sanity music store. After doing well at upselling, and the service side of my role, my dad mentioned real estate may be a good career path. In year twelve, I gained experience during the school holidays at a real estate office in the CBD. I was lucky enough to get a job post-internship and spent the next five years working at that office which I really enjoyed. From there, I opened my own business which I then sold in 2017 to join Jellis Craig Brunswick and I haven’t looked back.
Tell us about a particular sale that has stood out to you over your career. What made it unique or memorable?
One of my first was a record sale for a penthouse in a popular building, in the heart of Melbourne CBD. At just 21, it felt amazing to have completed tough negotiations and reach such an exceptional price for my vendors so early on in my career. To this day, that result is still a record price for the building and that sale gave me a lot of motivation for future business.
The Jellis Craig Pascoe Vale office has just opened in June 2023 and the suburb has seen a 3.4% median house price increase in the March ’23 quarter, why do you think the suburb is experiencing solid growth and what are some notable features or characteristics of the area that are appealing to buyers?
We are delighted to share that Jellis Craig’s growth continues with the opening of our latest office, Jellis Craig Pascoe Vale. We sat down with Partner, Adrian Petrucelli, to discuss his local area and why Melbourne’s north continues to grow in popularity amongst families and investors.
Adrian Petrucelli Partner & Senior Auctioneer, Jellis Craig Pascoe Vale
In my opinion, the growth is affected by the unique affordability, location and accommodation of Pascoe Vale. The area is only a stone’s throw from Essendon, Moonee Ponds, and Strathmore and for almost half the price. Many buyers have been drawn to the area for this reason. Simultaneously, with great parks, schools, cafés, transport, and restaurants all at your doorstep, Pascoe Vale is only going to continue to go from strength to strength and become more popular for Melbourne’s residents.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their real estate career
Enjoy the ride. Work hard and be patient, it’s a great industry.

In addition to being an experienced sales agent, you have also developed your expertise as a skilled Senior Auctioneer, what are some of the challenges and conversely some of the attractions of calling an auction?
Being able to achieve the best price for my vendors is what I love about auctions. Building relationships with potential buyers and understanding their needs is also important. Not every home is going to sell under the hammer on a Saturday, but it’s a proud moment when you’re able to secure a great price during private negotiations. As a local, you are on the ground every day and able to stay up to date with recent sales, trends, buyers, and even changes to infrastructure or new builds that may affect suburb prices. Being a local auctioneer with the power of the Jellis Craig engine, I’m able to provide my vendors with the confidence I will achieve the best outcome possible on the day.
