Common Topics in the TOEFL Speaking Test When we prepare for a test, we usually ask professors for the coverage of the exam, do advance readings, and memorize information. For students, this is the best way to get a passing grade on an examination. In preparing for an English proficiency test like the TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language, candidates do different kinds of practice tests and even enroll in TOEFL review centers. Thus, we see the importance of taking the TOEFL test seriously. In the TOEFL Speaking Test, candidates should be informed that it is not a simple question and answer type of test. The speaking test is composed of two different parts – two independent questions and four integrated questions. The best way to prepare for these two is to know the common topics in each task.

1.

Common Independent Speaking Topics

A candidate’s point of view and reasoning are both important in this task. The responses are based on an independent question where candidates need to provide at least two strong points with details. Here are some general topics in the independent task and common questions used. a.

Choose the teacher that you admire the most and explain why you admire him or her. Please include specific examples and details in your explanation.

2.

Common Integrated Speaking Tasks

In this task, the candidate should be careful in giving responses as their own points of view should not be a part of their answers. All responses should be based on the reading material and the lecture respectively. Common topics on this test are about school facilities, university construction, school policies, biology, psychology, economics, student life, transportation, and marketing. Reviewing on these different topics brings the candidates the familiarity and the advantage to know what to respond on questions for the TOEFL Speaking Test.
