01 JEMIMA CAROLINE LOUISE MANTON
5th Year: Railway Lane Clinic
“... [the] material basis for the production of space consists of a practical and fleshy body conceived of as a totality complete with spatial qualities (symmetries, asymmetries) and energetic properties (discharges, economies, waste)” - Lefebvre, ‘The Production of Space’, 1991. p. 302
Introduction Throughout the progression of 20th and 21st century consumerism, there has been a shift in focus from the idea of ‘status through materiality’ to an increasing focus on the ‘body beautiful’ as representative of social self-identity. This shift has subsequently been reflected in architecture, in the evolution of the market to the main street to arcades and malls and also in other sites of consumption; such as bars, day clinics, spas and gyms. 21st century medical science is now able to sculpt the status conscious human body into any form or veneer it desires. This consumption and display of the body beautiful partially relies on its architectural framing; specific spaces and sites will encourage or highlight consumptive behaviours relating to self and ego. Specifically, this project pivots around a discussion of Michel Foucault’s notion of the socially constructed Body. It dissects behaviours of public consumption and commodity, false facades and masques, and indulges in dissemination of ritual and theocratic lifestyle modification. Architectural elements focus on heightened awareness of self, of others, and of a critique of ‘measurement’ in a variety of ways.

RED MARKET CONCEPTUAL SKETCH EXPLORING NOTIONS OF CONCEALMENT AND REVEALING, COMMODIFYING OBJECTS AND PERSONS THOUGH GAZE, AND THE PIG.
015 JEMIMA CAROLINE LOUISE MANTON
MAIN BAR [TROUGH BAR] FINAL PRESENTATION THE MAIN BAR CANTILEVERS OVER THE VOID OF THE ARCADE AND IS SITUATED RIGHT ABOVE THE ENTRY TO THE CLINICS. THE BAR PUNCTURES THE MECHANISTIC AND DOMINATING SPACE WITH LUSH AND TACTILE ORNAMENTATION. THE BAR IS VEILED WITH ROPE CURTAINS THAT MASK AND CONSTRAIN THE SPACE.
MAIN BAR [TROUGH BAR] FINAL PRESENTATION THE ROPE ALSO SYMBIOTICALLY DENOTES A REVEALING AS THE CURTAIN IS MANIPULATED BY THE USER; PEEKING THROUGH THE ROPE CURTAINS INTO THE VOID REVEALS TO THE CLINIC AND ARCADE USER THAT THEY ARE IN FACT, BEING WATCHED.
017 JEMIMA CAROLINE LOUISE MANTON
THE ‘VEIL’ THE RED MARKET THE MAIN STAIR THAT EXTENDS FROM THE COUNTERWEIGHT TO THE ARCADE AND SURGERY BELOW IS VEILED BY A SUSPENDED MESH CANOPY. PASSING UNDER THE CANTILEVERED BAR SPACE, THE MESH CANOPY CONCEALS THE USER UNTIL VERY NEARLY, BUT NOT QUITE, THE END OF THEIR DECENT TO THEIR DESIRED DESTINATION
GATES TO THE CLINICS THE RED MARKET THE REDMARKET IS DESIGNED PARALLEL TO WALTER BENJAMIN’S 19TH CENTURY PARISIAN ARCADES AND PLAYS ON THE ASSOCIATED NOTION OF A STORE FRONTS ACTING AS FALSE FAÇADES AND MASKING OTHER PROGRAM [IT WAS WIDELY KNOWN THAT THE ARCADES PARADED AS MILLINERY SHOPS BUT TRULY ACTED AS BROTHELS]

4th Year: Urban design “We are bored in the city, to still discover mysteries on the signs along the street, latest state of humor and poetry, requires getting damned tired...” “Byproduct of the circulation of commodities, human circulation considered as a form of consumption, tourism comes down fundamentally to the freedom to go and see what has become banal. The economic planning of the frequenting of different places is already in itself the guarantee of their equivalence. The same modernization that has withdrawn the element of time from journeying, has also withdrawn the reality of space.” Gilles Ivain (aka Ivan Chtcheglov) ― Tom McDonough, The Situationists and the City: A Reader

Introduction Borrowing from the Situationist’s strategy of detournment, preexisting architecture within the central rail corridor of Newcastle is used to generate new urban scenarios, redefining the city as a site for ‘play’ and appropriation. The concept of detournment exists within the re-use of existing artistic and architectural elements to create a new ensemble. Any elements within the city can be used to make a new commodity. Within a Novocastrian context, the mutual interface of the two worlds of feeling- Newcastle as a city born from industry and this proposed High Speed Rail interchange results in a juxtaposition of these two independent expressions in combination supersedes the original and produces a new organisation to greater efficacy. The proposed site is master planned to inject a mix of transport, education, commercial, business and residential into prominent section of Newcastle’s CBD. The HSR interchange, located to the eastern end of the site (currently existing as an antique center will be reprogrammed to serve as Newcastle City’s new TOD site. This interchange will consist of a new HSR through stop, a newly relocated subterranean heavy rail station and a bus interchange. The interchange runs on a major east/west axis linking the station to the bus and taxi terminal through a covered public promenade. One precedent for this project is Gordon Matta-Clarks ‘Pier 52’ project, in which Matta-Clark reacts to urban gentrification and creation of the ‘non-ument’ in the form if a radical incisions. Detournment of space such as this occurs when an existing space outlives its original utility and reasons for which it was originally built. When this function becomes obsolete, the space is subject to re-appropriation The carpark structure has been given the new function of the business/law schools library and archive. The existing system and progression of ramps within the carpark lends itself to appropriation to the dewy decimal system of a numerical spiral that can expand and contract from 000-900 as the university’s collection updates. A similar model can be found in OMA’s Seattle public library. Hunter streets current building morphology has been retained but manipulated internally to created more appropriate spaces to accommodate the new university, commercial and retail. The architecture of this site aims to create emotionally moving situations rather than emotionally moving forms that merely exist as unitary objects within the city exhibition. It is meant to be an inversion of a societal prioritization of representation over experience. The transformation of the buildings will contribute to the alteration of the psychogeographical ambiance of Newcastle.
RAIL STATION AND BUS TERMINAL SECTION THE EXISTING ANTIQUE CENTER CARCASS HAS BEEN RE-APPROPRIATED TO SERVE IN THE MAKE UP OF THE NEW HIGH SPEED RAIL TERMINAL. THIS EXISTING FORM ALSO INFORMS SIMILAR ARCHITECTURE WITH IN THE ZONE WITH THE REPETITION OF THE TRUSS MOTIF AND SIMILAR USE OF BRICK.
043 JEMIMA CAROLINE LOUISE MANTON
RETAIL, COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL SECTION EXISTING BUILDINGS AALONG HUNTER ST HAVE BEEN MAINTAINED TO AVOID GENTRIFICATION. FURTHER FLOOR SPACE HAS BEEN ADDED ABOVE THESE BUILDINGS SIMILAR TO THE PRECEDENT OF ‘BEAR LANE’, LONDON. SELECT BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN REMOVED WITH THEIR FACADE REMAINING TO CREATE ABOVE GROUND STREETS AND ACCESS TO ABOVE SPACE. THERE IS A CONCENTRATION ON CREATING PEDESTRIAN SCALE STREETS AND ALLEYS THROUGH OUT THE SITE WITH TACTILE STREET ADDRESS.
UNIVERSITY LAW LIBRARY AND ARCHIVE SECTION THE EXISTING CARPARK ON SITE IS UNSUITABLE FOR RESIDENTIAL REALLOCATION, HOWEVER, THE EXISTING SYSTEM AND PROGRESSION OF RAMPS LENDS ITSELF TO APPROPRIATION INTO THE LAW LIBRARY AND ARCHIVE. THE SPIRALING RAMPS RUN CONCURRENTLY WITH THE DEWY DECIMAL SYSTEM ALLOWING FOR EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION FROM 000-900 AS THE UNIVERSITY’S COLLECTION UPDATES

Dissertation Urban Flâneuse: Sex and the City, consumer culture and the metropolis Abstract- The increasing presence of the flâneuse within the city construct can be attributed to her emerging involvement in public consumption in the early 19th century. Since that time, an inversion of traditionally gendered behaviours and spatial mappings has occurred, with not only the appearance of women in conventional patriarchal spaces, but the incidence of traditionally male attributed behavioural patterns. It is a 20th and 21st century phenomena of autonomous women using urban spaces to pursue pleasure in a way similar to that of the flâneur. This current trend in modernity relies and is derived from a persistent undertone of continuity in the realmof consumerism and exchange within social (urban) spaces. Many buildings and cities are highly codified and mechanistic, deliberately and systematically abstracting symbols from their historical and social context. Within the case study, Sex and the City (a reflection of contemporary society in the form of popular culture media), the protagonist of the series, Carrie Bradshaw interacts with Manhattan in a manner that signifies the intrinsic relationship between architecture, production, consumption, signification, representation and bodily experience within the city and it’s urban spaces. As contemporary urban flâneuse Carrie expedites her ability to reflect and inflect her independence and self-sufficiency within her own complexurban realm, a liberated female celebrating and demonstrating her independence through consumer culture, based on her own urban epistemology.

4th Year: High rise
“For thousands of years, it had been nature--and its supposed creator--that had had a monopoly on awe. It had been the icecaps, the deserts, the volcanoes and the glaciers that had given us a sense of finitude and limitation and had elicited a feeling in which fear and respect coagulated into a strangely pleasing feeling of humility, a feeling which the philosophers of the eighteenth century had famously termed the sublime. But then had come a transformation to which we were still the heirs.... Over the course of the nineteenth century, the dominant catalyst for that feeling of the sublime had ceased to be nature. We were now deep in the era of the technological sublime, when awe could most powerfully be invoked not by forests or icebergs but by supercomputers, rockets and particle accelerators. We were now almost exclusively amazed by ourselves.” ― Alain de Botton, The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work
