Stephen Bean Personal Statement I am an energetic individual with a strong desire for developing confident, morally minded people. I enjoy seeing those of different ages and from different backgrounds meet the challenge of being outside their comfort zones, all while in an environment that I know to be safe. I am enthusiastic about the outdoors and am continually excited by the opportunities this work provides. My passion is for long-term development and for the building of confidence in individuals. I have varied experience and qualifications gained over the last nine years, particularly in the areas of watersports, coaching, DofE, health and safety, and safeguarding.
Bean Outdoors From October 2015 I have made the decision to go freelance as this will best allow me to continue working in the above areas, while also increasing variety. I believe I am ideally placed, only an hour from both the Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks and only two hours from Snowdonia. I will, however, happily travel anywhere.

Stephen Bean Experience Senior Activity Instructor
Llain Activity Centre, Ceredigion March 2013 – Present
As Senior Instructor I am responsible for all technical advice for water based activities including kayaking and canoeing, all off-site canoe trips, the mentoring and development of instructional staff and for monitoring session deliveries, as well as advising on health and safety and risk assessments. My previous experience as an outdoor instructor was key in understanding the level of management required in a smaller team. I also drew on what I'd learned from observing other senior and chief instructors, as well as from training courses and technical advisers. My favourite aspect of this role is being able to practice and develop my coaching skills, including bringing the instructor skill level from basic Level 1s to experienced and talented Level 2s as well as guiding a significant increase in their personal paddling skills. Training and developing others has long been a passion of mine and this opportunity has confirmed it is indeed something I wish to pursue.
Outdoor Instructor
Abernethy Ardeonaig, Scotland Sept 2009 – March 2013
During my three and a half hears here I was involved in numerous Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, developing trainee instructors and was appointed evening activity coordinator. I also delivered aspects of the curriculum for outdoor education for young people and adults through the various onsite and off-site activities. Abernethy Ardeonaig is one of a group of four outdoor centres around Scotland and this enabled increased opportunities for working in different environments with different teams. Additionally, it demanded an awareness of the workings of other centres.
General Assistant / Part-time Instructor Abernethy Ardgour, Scotland September 2007 – August 2009 Here I worked alongside the centre's instructor training programme, assisting with the training of the students and instructing outside groups. I was also involved in front line customer service, upkeep of the centre, and catering, which has provided me with a good all-round understanding of the work that goes into a good outdoor centre. I also made use of my time here to further personal progression.

As a volunteer youth leader I've been able to use my skills in presentation and long-term development. It keeps me up to date with youth culture from a variety of backgrounds and in a less formal setting than work. I also help plan and prepare residential trips.
I was invited to attend the second day of the 2014 Global Leadership Summit. It was very inspiring and informative and gave me a lot to think about, especially in regard to working with customers as well as how they respond to businesses today.
As part of my gap year I was accepted on a six month placement in South Africa, helping with Outdoor Leadership Development Camps. This was my first real experience working with young people and I haven't looked back since.
Child Protection & Safeguarding Training I regularly attend these courses and have recently completed the Sports Coach UK Child Protection Course and CCPAS 'Facing the Unthinkable' Training.
Education
Higher Education Certificate In 'Mentoring Our Workplace' I explored the skills involved in developing and maintaining a mentoring relationship in a professional workplace, as well as the importance of the benefits of long term investment. In my work I was able to link this to the long term coaching programmes I'm currently managing.
Trainee Instructor Course A twelve month residential course which included six weeks of ski training in Switzerland and three months work experience around Scotland. As well as a number of instructor qualifications, I also gained confidence in my abilities and experience teaching and working in residential activity centres.
