HOUSTON 2013 SEASON DASHINALL-TIME REVIEW RESULTS IN THE BEGINNING When NWSL launched in 2013, it marked the third attempt in 13 years to get a women’s pro soccer league up and running in the United States. Only two years earlier, WPS played the last of its three seasons, matching WUSA for lifespan. But NWSL came in with an ace up its sleeve that made things different — U.S. Soccer became a partner, funding the league office and joining forces with Canada Soccer and the Mexico Football Federation to pay the salaries of top players. That meant the first seven players on all eight teams were free of charge to ownership (though not all Mexican players wound up on regular season rosters), which became a key component in defraying costs for a league that began on a shoestring budget. The other key difference for NWSL was the inclusion of Portland Thorns FC, established by Merritt Paulson, owner of the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer. The joining of forces allowed the Thorns unprecedented resources and infrastructure for a women’s pro team to date. THE REGULAR SEASON Sky Blue FC came out of the chute to set the early pace. Their first-half success was centered around Australian Lisa De Vanna whose early season brilliance was highlighted by an astounding bicycle-kick goal against the Boston Breakers that would later earn a FIFA Puskás Award nomination (Goal of the Year). But the darlings of the inaugural NWSL season were undoubtedly FC Kansas City. Many scoffed at the hiring of a Macedonian-born coach with a mostly indoor soccer background. Unknown at the time was that Vlatko Andonovski arrived at his job interview with binders full of information about potential draft picks and when he laid out his vision for the club, he became an easy hire. He found Florida’s Erika Tymrak in the 2nd round and helped her become Rookie of the Year. Tymrak also formed a 2013 NWSL REGULAR SEASON STANDINGS Team
