PORT FOLIO TIMOTHY JENG Bachelor in Architecture CAUP, Tongji University Selected Works 2014 - 2016

Hi, my name is Timothy Jeng and I am an eager learner of art, technology and design. Architecture is about making space, however spatial experience is subjective and personal to every individual; a successful design ushers people into it's narrative, a window where people will be able to interact with the space the way intended by the architect. I believe that architecture tommorow are shaped by the collective data of these interactions, making space we live in more dynamic and fluid. I am especially interested to learn and experiment more about the advance practice of architecture.

PREFABRICATED CONTAINER HOUSING Research in Industrialize Residential in China The urbanization rate of China has grown 200% since the Chinese economic reform led by DengXiaoPing in 1989. Cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin has achieved more than 80% (recorded 2013) of the population-in-province living in the city (with Shanghai peaking at 89.6%, resulting in 21.5 million people living in the metropolitan area). Even with government's house insurance policies providing a sufficient number of affordable housings to the market, the situation remains unchanged (with many reasons which will not be laid out in this research). The subject of this research is to look for an alternative approach to fast-built, environmental friendly and affordable housing prototype that might help relieve the housing problem. 10

While researching the solution that best accommodate the three qualities of the design (fast-built, affordable and environmental friendly), I came across the idea of using recycled shipping containers as the barebone for this design. Using shipping container as the barebone to design a new form of industrialized-mass-produced collective living can have a number of obvious advantages. First of all, being the largest container port in the world handling 33.62 million TEU alone in 2013, Shanghai produces 67% of the disposed containers on an annual basis; recycling these retired containers into a new cycle could prove a reliable solution in relieving the growing stress of container disposal. The second is the 12

maturity in the production, whether be the already exist standard in the manufacturing process or the modularity in different types of models; the maturity in the production will most definitely help reduce additional waste in the production as well as initial investment in infrastructure. The third is the transportability of the shipping container, which gives the resulted design to be prefabricated in a facility before assembly on-site. Standard dimension of the shipping containers come in three different sizes: a) The standard 20' container; 20'L×8'W×8'6"H b) The half-long 10' container; 10'L×8'W×8'6"H c) The double 40' container; 40'L×8'W×8'6"H However due to limited space, 10' containers would make poor choice due to the likeliness of increase time and costs in the manufacturing process; 40' container is ideal as a single unit (a single 40' container have approximately 27.6 sqm; combining two would make a 55.2 sqm apartment, which suffice the minimum requirement for affordable housing in China), however to create more flexible combinations, 20' container were mixed to diversify the space.

*SCw = Standard Container width | SCl = Standard Container length un = unit count (horizontal) / apartment

I took the idea from Capsule Tower in central Tokyo; by playing with the relative position of each capsule, Mr. Kisho Kurokawa created a series of gaps in between. This gives me the idea of changing the relative position of the containers to create additional spaces that can be either use for public or private purposes. Due to strict daylighting regulation in China, I restricted the positioning to only forward and backward; however this would become a challenge to stability when laying a 40' container on top of 20'. To solve the problem, I dissect the containers into basic modular units each with the size of 4' by

(y-axis) 8' (x-axis); then inserted the containers into a structural framework with 5 units wide and 10 to 15 units long, holding 4 containers in place with an extra unit-wide space left for public communication. Each modular array (1 service space + 4 Ă— containers) is a standalone housing unit that will work as a functional residential building, at the same time able to connect other housing units to form a larger cluster of housings. The expandability is only limited to structure strength (of how tall) and fire regulations (of how many unit sideways).

The various combinations of containers result in the various forms of apartment units. Most of the commonly seen size (45 sqm, 70 sqm, 90 sqm and 120 sqm) of a housing unit in shanghai can be produced with the right combination of containers; Unfortunately not all of the combinations are efficient use of spaces, this inspired me to create a set of typical (efficient) apartment units of different sizes as a guideline.

Typical apartment unit sizes from left to right: 110 sqm, 70 sqm, 55 sqm. (90 sqm apartment is left out for it's similarity to 70 sqm apartment.)

18

Project 01: Prefabricated Container Housing Design Research

Apartment units are dynamic combination of 40' and 20' containers. However floor plans are considered carefully to best utilize relationship between stories; a 20' container on top of a 40' will provide a terrace for the upper story resident, while a 40' container sliding 4' backward will give a standard balcony. With this attribute, the design could be made easily from a condo to an apartment or even to a multi-family residential.

To assess energy performance, the design is set to a existing neighborhood located in Minhang district, Shanghai. The 4Ă— housing unit apartment replaced the mid-rise residential in the neighborhood; this replacement will be use as benchmark to assess the design's Eco-performance in the real world situation. Using CFD software we can see in the diagram above the placement of the new apartments does not affect the area wind environment; this guaranteed equal air flow to the selected sample of study. To further look into natural ventilation of the design, I analyzed the typical layout of the three different size apartments: the 55 sqm studio, 70 sqm 2 bedroom, And the 110 sqm 3 bedrooms. In order to keep maximum expandability (as well 22

Further look into energy performance of the building will have to analyze the ventilation ability of individual apartment (of which I use the 3 standard plan as sample of study) as well daylighting performance in all seasons.

Visual range

The dimension of the containers are not ideal to daylighting performance (however, great for summer shading and winter daylight); to address the daylighting problem (and overheating during summer midday) active solutions (such as SolartubeÂŽ and thin film solar cell as blind) should be considered, within a reasonable range of price/performance.

standardized produce), the method of ventilation is limited to HVAC system as well modular window units installed to the two ends of containers. This attribute causes distinct air tunneling within the public areas, as shown in the diagram above. It is unclear of how much will the tunnel affects air flow in other areas of the apartments; however base on the result of the analysis, it will be unsurprising to see a few temperature drop in a hot summer evening. Daylighting analysis focused on the interior brightness during the day. The result of the analysis is expected (the dimension of the containers are not ideal to daylighting performance), the average illuminance (lux) of the interior falls somewhere around 350-400, with the minimum of 267 and the maximum of 600. In both the 55 and 110 sqm apartments, center part of the apartments have the dimmest brightness while both ends the brightest; the 80 sqm apartment has a relatively equal brightness due to the use of 20' container (if without an overhang). Despite the annual average daylighting performance being unimpressive, it still surpasses minimum requirement for the winter daylighting in shanghai.

The energy performance of the design is wanting, however a few of the active and passive strategies can be taken in place to improve the sustainability and the comfortness of the building; strategies include solar-powered HVAC (can be installed in gaps created by the structural framework), solartube (for enhancing daylighting effect), green roof, LED lightings etc. 7

The result of the research is satisfying, both the fast built and environmental-friendly criteria are responded accordingly; however, further research still required to evaluated the total production costs. Unfortunately, that is something I cannot address correctly at the moment.

The site is located in the New Portside District northeast from central district. The site is on a gentle down Huguo road with it's south-side facing directly towards the city center; at it's north are natural green land with a stream of water flowing across the site. After thorough study, the team decided to categorically divide the site into three different parts: the hotel area rolls out alongside Huancheng road covering the unblocked view towards both the city and the mountains west of the site, the shopping center (originally with a 12 stories tall apartment sitting on top) occupies the south-east Huguo Road to best utilize the commercial value and the high-end duplex residential sitting north-west of the more scenic corner of the site. 30

Inspired by the Shanshuihua, the traditional Chinese calligraphic painting, the language of the design is intended to express the abstract form of mountains and waters. The complex is separated into three relatively independent districts: hotel, commercial shopping center and high-end residential; each of the three parts have it's own expression to the Shanshui theme as response to the different purposes. Much like the in traditional Chinese garden, the solid part of the architecture are used to mimic the rich and lively shapes of terraces, the stone caves and the cliffs; the abstracted waters weaved into the expression of facades.

SHANGHAI SHESHAN CREATIVE CAMPUS Invited Competition from Vlinks Investment Group The Vlinks Investment is a real estate investment group focusing on rural tourism real estate development. The Creative Campus design competition is intended as commercial, office and residential mixuse, inspiring economic activities in rural Shanghai. The site is located in Songjiang, which is at the southeast corner of the Yangtze River Delta; it is sited at the foot of Sheshan (or She Mountain), with rivers surrounding the area that is only accessible through the bridges at top-right and lower-left corner of the site. The site is adjacent to the Sanguantang tributary and the Mingduyuan residential community is sitting north across a narrow stream. The objective of the design is to utilize the surrounding resources to create a place for working, living and recreational activities. 36

The inspiration of the campus architecture comes from native village of Shanghai (when it was still a small fishing village); the massive floor area is detached into smaller size spaces various accordingly to it's use and functionality. The spatial experience will be similar to walking in a small village, where rooms and rooms are intimate to each other serving similar function while distant when it's not. The exterior of the architecture looks similar to a small village sitting on a terrace; the first level is made up by clusters of offices loosely joint by semi-open corridors and courtyards, while the second level took the form and relationships of the traditional village architectures: clustered and spread out organically to its function. 38

39

The campus functions in two different operation styles; the first floor offices is intended as a mix combination of shares spaces for small companies and startups and the second floor is rented out to individual studios and middle-size businesses to operate independently. The campus hosts a variety of programs: from co-working office space to recreational spaces like gyms and yacht club and to studio apartments intended for shortterm renting as well as individual offices for individual studios and mid-size businesses. Lower level are designed to house the more flexible and more general-purpose programs as such as co-working office, gyms and operation office while the upper level for more stationary programs like apartments and offices. 40

Project 03: Shanghai Sheshan Creative Campus Competition

A bird-view overlooking the entire site. The volume of the architecture is reduced to fit in the scale of the surroundings.

Timothy Jeng | Portfolio

41

The concept of the design is to have small buildings sitting on an elevated land.

42

Project 03: Shanghai Sheshan Creative Campus Competition

The site is independent, only accessible by bridges.

It was used as farmlands before being re-purposed.

The floor would raise a giant mass in the center of nowhere.

Design slice the large volume into small dices of programs.

The lower floor is then covered by roof serving as a pedestal.

Cottage-like buildings are raised to look like native village.

Sitting close to Sheshan Mountain, the design is conceptualize to look and feels like belonging to the place; the rich insertion of open courtyards and greeneries are intended for users and residents in the near neighborhood to live closely with natural environment. Grided gardens are meant to look like farmlands in rural China and the small cottage-like offices like village buildings. Embracing the difference between urban and rural life style, the design invites nature into the architecture in order to feel closer to the environment; by reducing the existence of the form, the architecture will have minimum impact to the rural texture.

THM Ă— YUSHE STUDIO RETAIL / CAFE / OFFICE Interior Design Re-purposing to the Unused Exhibition Place THM, The Handmade Master is a retail brand selling handcrafted merchandise. The retail/cafe is a collaboration between the THM and the Yushe office; the shop is stocked with merchandise provided by THM while managed by the office. The design is a interior re-purposing to the first floor space of the Yushe office. Originally use as exhibition and reception, the project is intended to utilize the rarely-use exhibition space into a place for people working nearby to shop and relax; the second level remains the original working area for Yushe office. Along with another intern in the office and under the supervision of the project architect, this design is the very first project I worked on since joining Yushe. Now the cafe is also rented out to host small activities. 44

The interior is a near 100 sqm rectangular space, with 4.8m floor height and 3 exits to the street. The design aims to retain it's original program as reception for the design office, while adding new programs, a handicraft shop and a coffee shop, to the space. To achieve this, the team created a core service area that at one side as coffee bar and the other store counter/office reception; the space is divided into two main area: the front side retail (with staircase direct up to the office) and the backside cafe with a backyard garden. The spatial arrangement is defined by a folding wall, which is used for both displaying merchandise as well stock storage. The module divided the space into

The back of the retail space is the cafe side of the place. Access to the cafe takes effort; originally conceived as only an affiliated service available to regular customers (insisted by the THM), has been suggested and later quickly change to all customer facing. Additional exit is added through the backyard garden as a discrete entrance to the cafe; it became a regularly visit place for many of the people working nearby.

Shipping containers provide excellent framework for prefabricated housing units

Shipping containers provide excellent framework for prefabricated housing units

While the original floor height (4.8m) is great for hosting exhibition, it is hardly a space for customers to feel relax; the design attempts to create the feel of coziness by lowering the ceiling to a more humanly scaled height. The solution is to add a sectionally covered ceiling to the sitting and retail area; the ceiling is made up of three parts: 4mĂ—9m timber-frame structure made with 1mĂ—1m grid, LED downlights centered the grid and the translucent fabric covering for the ceiling. The result gives a tender touch to the space; not only do the linen ceiling with LED backlight provides ambient lighting, the soft fabric moves slightly with airflows. The linen ceiling is replaceable for periodic maintenance.

THE HANDMADE MASTER EXPERIENCE STORE THM's First Experience Store in Joy City Shopping Centre The Handmade Master experience store in the recent Joy City shopping center is the fourth time collaboration with Yushe. The founder of the shop wishes to create a place where customers not only can see the full expansion of their products, as well being able to participate in the production process. The Handmade Master experience store consists several types of activities including: shopping, crafting (showcase the production process), tutoring (learn how to make one yourselves) and exhibiting ideas (a small video or graphic showroom). The design intends to create a space where several of activities can happen simultaneously in one place; this would require an unconventional approach to the layout. The solution is a 3-dimensional parting to the space. 50

Majority of the merchandise are displayed on embedded shelves to the wall.

52

Project 05: The Handmade Master Experience Store Design

Even with 200 sqm to utilize, the spatial arrangement of the shop is challenged by the limited width. Most sections of the shop have an average of 7m-8m width with one section peaking at close to 11m and one less than 5.6m; more to it, the shop has up to 11 intersecting walls with half being non-perpendicular to each other. Conventional solution using shelves to section the space would further narrowing the space; the team intends to use level difference to arrange layout. Inspired by the phrase "down the rabbit hole", the design raises the floor to a few steps high then "dig" into the floor to create spaces; each rabbit holes (total number of four) contains different programs and activities.

53

The shop can be separated into three different layers of activities: the bottom layer is the experience and participation, whereas the middle layer is the circulation and top layer is a scenario display of the products.

54

Project 05: The Handmade Master Experience Store Design

The counter of the shop is designed to be quiet and low profile to reduce distraction of the shopping experience.

There are two places in the shop dedicated to showcase a real-life scenario of the products.

Tone of the shop is set to neutral-dark ambient to better highlight the products: using the 40% gray cement slab as dominating color for wall and column panelings, along with white maple as shelves and dark laminated wood as flooring. To express the brand culture, handcrafted wood and leather furnitures, decoration and lightings are used as decor to the space. The circulation goes around each of the "rabbit holes" in a sequential order: from the center hole to the topleft one then move down to the center-left then to bottom-left. Customers will be able to walk around and participate in the activities (handcraft workshop, design 101, design lecture etc.) Happening in the shop; the journey throughout will create an adventurous experience for customers to return the next time.

THE HANDMADE MASTER TIANZIFANG STORE Retail Store Located in the Shakkumen Neighbourhood The Tianzifang retail store is actually the third commissioned interior design project from THM. However, due to the change of business decision the design is suspended until the completion of the experience store in Joy City shopping center. The shop is intended as a boutique store selling finer products only; the founder wishes to continued the visual language of the Joy City shop as part of their new steps to rebuild the brand culture. The Tianzifang store is the second THM shop located in the Shakkumen neighborhood (the original one are poorly constructed as well designed); this interior design is seen as their next generation shop under the new visual guideline. The project completed and in use since January 2016. 56

Project 06: The Handmade Master Tianzifang Retail Store Design

The spatial arrangement is essentially formed by the three custom-made display modules.

The interior of the Tianzifang THM retail store is a 3.5m wide and 5.6m long rectangular space; the less than 20 sqm space is a challenge to creating the sense of focus when using conventional method. To make the shop more appealing, the team decided to add a core module as the central unit; the module is a combination of checkout counter and product shelf. By installing the core module to the center of the shop, the circulation will be more oriented and managed; this will provide organized movement to the shop. The construction of the interior is essentially defined by three customize display modules: the center counter/ shelf, the bottom-left corner display and the upper-right corner display. All three of the modules are designed to be used as both storage and display, with the exception of the upper-right module which is a storage space installed to the bottom of the embedded shelf.

Contrast to open layout in typical small shop design; the core module in the center of the shop allows circulation to be oriented and managed, thus making the spatial experience stronger and more appealing.

Project 06: The Handmade Master Tianzifang Retail Store Design

The space within the center module were use as part display and part storage.

The counter of the shop is designed showcase the process of handcrafting.

The use of the material is similar to the Joy City shop, though with the reduction of the darker wood floorings. Customers walking between the shelves can feel a strong sense of aloneness, the narrow corridors will prevent anyone walking in clusters; such is the ideal in the founder's mind, "the process of picking up something handcrafted should be very private, it is the moment where you found the items you look for speaks directly to you." The interior of the shop is designed be intimate to the products. Focusing on the quality of an actual store against digital shopping: instead of having a thousand products to choose from the customers will be able to touch and feel the item before making the final decision, thus making the process more intoxicating.

XIAOSHEJI JOY CITY RETAIL STORE Creating Inshop Circulation with Tree-like Installations Xiaosheji is another retail brand developed by the founder of THM. Similar to The Handmade Master, Xiaosheji focus on handcrafted jewelries as their product; unlike THM, Xiaosheji collaborates seasonally with young artists and designers. The shop wishes to create a platform where young artisans can have a place to showoff their work and at the same time promote the idea of crafting-yourself. The shop will have to be flexible for seasonal rotary of the products, as well having place to hold lectures in handcrafting. The design is inspired by <The Road Not Taken>; tree-like installations are placed in grid to create the sense of space, along with counter shelf and movable workbenches the interior is intended to be able to reorganized whenever need it to. 62

FREELANCE GRAPHIC DESIGN Selection of the Freelance Graphic Works After working 2 years in the Yushe office I felt the need of exploring more possibilities in design. I took the opportunity to work as a freelance graphic designer for a period of time. The following pages are a selection of projects I've worked on during this period: works including design in logos, VI and posters. Working as a graphic designer is an interesting experience; the method of approaching a design is a lot similar to architecture design, which is essentially the same process with some difference in methodologies and constructions. Visual experience of a webpage or a logo are not far from spatial experience of a museum or a living room; the key to create a good design is to think of the idea you want people to understand and try everything you can to elaborate it. 66
