A Letter from the Chair and the CEO DEAR THINK TOGETHER PARTNERS, THINK Together’s work is rooted in the belief that every student deserves an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and self-initiative. Our programs and services help expand learning opportunities in and out of the classroom so that all kids, regardless of background, neighborhood or family circumstance, have the opportunity to succeed. California’s schools continue to adapt to the challenges and opportunities presented by the new way education funds are distributed, the demands of more rigorous learning standards and accountability, and the hiring, developing and retaining of teachers as the economy recovers and baby boomers retire. Amid this dynamic and often challenging landscape, THINK Together is succeeding in deepening its partnership with schools and communities to achieve a shared mission: educational excellence and equity for all kids. We are humbled and grateful to share that in 2016, together with Principal’s Exchange, we served more than 130,000 kids at 451 locations across 45 school districts from San Diego to San Mateo counties. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR INCLUDE: • Starting fall of 2016, 80% of our district partners elected to increase their investments in our work to keep pace with state mandated cost increases and to expand learning opportunities for students through the allocation of locally controlled funds. New programs vary based on the needs of students in these districts, and include homework centers, small group tutoring, afterschool academies for kindergarten students, STEM enrichment and expanded high school internship opportunities. • THINK Together staff began delivering physical education during the school day enabling 8,000 kids to get their recommended exercise hours while releasing hundreds of teachers to participate in planning and collaboration time without increasing the demand for substitute teachers. • Our partnership with Principal’s Exchange entered its second year. Their work, which inspires effective teaching and learning, more than doubled its reach to 30,000 kids in 600 classrooms across the state. This fall, 135 of our afterschool program alumni took the next step in fulfilling their dreams by entering college. Our partnership with you helps to support kids in school and helps them graduate from college and get good jobs so that they can live healthy and productive lives and give back to their community. We are all working together to build the next-generation of the American Dream. WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTNERSHIP AND SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONTINUE AND EXPAND YOUR INVESTMENT IN THE AMERICAN DREAM. ERIC BODEN

at least three times per week. Using the Harvest of the Month curriculum, students learn about portion sizes, food choices and how to properly read food labels. Three times per year, we will have Family Health Nights where students will use mobile kitchens to prepare healthy recipes with their parents and teach them about the benefits of fruits and vegetables. Students are
encouraged to voice their desire for healthy foods at school, in restaurants and at home, thereby fulfilling our goal of encouraging healthy behaviors for students and families in our communities. We found statistically significant improvement in students’ overall knowledge of what it means to be healthy. Specific areas of growth include the number of students who enjoyed eating fruit, students who thought that eating healthy can help them do better in school, and students learning how to practice portion control.

THINK Together began in the early 1990s in a tough neighborhood in westside Costa Mesa. A group of incredible mothers reached out for help and community leaders came together to open the doors of Shalimar Learning Center, a space for the neighborhood kids to come after school, get help with their homework, and stay safe. Over 100 kids showed up on the first day. From those beginnings at Shalimar, THINK Together was founded as a non-profit in 1997 to expand educational support services for under-resourced kids like the ones at Shalimar. THINK Together developed partnerships with school districts in California to provide these services at school sites. Come join us in celebrating our 20th anniversary on April 27, 2017 so we can continue creating excellence and equity for all kids.
