third branch of first responders in this community. The Jenks Public Works Department is responsible for keeping the water flowing, the toilets flushing and roads operating here in Jenks. The Jenks Tribune’s Hayden Tucker wrote a feature article on the Jenks Public Works Department in the Oct. 25

HEARING FROM THE OWNER’S BOX Hello Jenks, America! I hope everyone has had a fun and exciting week here in our wonderful community. We celebrated the arrival of a new year on Wednesday when the clock struck midnight and I hope everyone did it in style, but most of all, was safe in their festivities. The weather has been a rollercoaster ride this holiday season with higher than usual temperatures, strong winds, some heavy rain and even a severe thunderstorm and tornado warning that threatened Green Country this past weekend. The sporadic weather is a simple reminder of just how wild and crazy Oklahoma weather can get, even in the middle of winter. There is a lot to be excited about as we welcome 2020 into our lives. New Year’s is always a fun time for me personally because it is the dawn of a new day. The slate has been cleaned and it is a good time to hit the reset button and focus on

Jenks Tribune is mailed weekly through the Jenks Postal Office and United States Postal Service to all U.S. Postal customers in the 74037 zip code.

being a better person in the new year than you were the year prior. Specifically, there is a lot to be excited about in Jenks this coming year. There are so many wonderful things taking place in our community right now, it is hard not to get very excited for what the upcoming year has to offer. The new year also brings with it many new year’s resolutions. Many people will make promises to themselves or those close to them about changing a certain area of their lives. While there is nothing wrong with new year’s resolutions, they

are rarely ever carried out through the entire year. I encourage people to focus on becoming a better person as a whole and don’t just focus on one or two areas of your life. Don’t give yourself an impossible task, but rather treat others with respect and kindness and show your appreciation for them and more than likely they will do the same for you. In my experience, happiness does not come from personal accomplishments, but from surrounding yourself with people who will lift you up and be supportive in any decision you make in life. January is typically a slower month in the newspaper world, so this year, we are hoping to generate some excitement around the Jenks community by offering half price ads throughout the entire month of January. We understand the holidays can take a toll on a business from a financial standpoint, so we want to make it a little easier for local

businesses to be able to purchase an ad or series of ads in the Jenks Tribune. If you are a business owner or know someone who is, I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity. Another series we are starting today is the Jenks Tribune Readers’ Choice Awards. We want to hear from you on what businesses you believe are at the top of their industry right now. There are 30 categories for you to fill out who you believe the best of the best is in Jenks. Go and check out Page 10A to see the categories for this inaugural Jenks Tribune series. With that I will close for the day. I sure hope you all have a fun, exciting, but most of all safe weekend here in Jenks, America. I hope you enjoy the Jenks Tribune. Thank you for reading. Sincerely, Kyle Salomon ksalomon@jenkstribune.com

GUEST COLUMN

MAIN STREET MATTERS WITH SARAH CLAVIN Welcome to a New Year, a new decade; a new opportunity to start over, start fresh, begin again. Like you, dear reader, I look forward to this time to reflect on the past year and to look forward with new eyes to the year that lies ahead. Generally, I set a few goals, and try to pick a word that can be my overarching focus for the next 12 months. Looking back over 2019 (and 2018 really), I was coming out of having babies and spent the past two years allowing myself, my fitness, and my career to come to the forefront of time. During that time, I was able to realize and achieve several lofty goals I had set for myself. It has been an incredibly exciting past couple of years. This year, I’m looking forward to turning my focus more “others” centered. I will continue to work on me, myself, and I, where there is always room for more and more common around the US and that there was a desper-

ate need for one in Tulsa. 23 years after the first facility opened, in 2019 the Millers decided to expand to the west side of the Tulsa area to serve communities that didn’t have quick and easy access to a year improvement, but I am ready to look for more opportunities to invest in others at church, at work, help the needy, homeless, underprivileged, and be overly intentional on raising my children to be more selfless. Personal goals aside, this year is also a VERY big year for our beloved Miller Swim School. It

is their 60th anniversary of teaching swimming lessons in the greater Tulsa area. WOW. In 1942, Rita and Larry Miller were working as educators in Tulsa Public Schools, and needed a little more income. So, with their summers “off,” they began managing neighborhood pools. In that time, it was common for parents to drop their children off at the pool for the day, neighborhood and Tulsa Parks Pools were densely populated during June and July. While supervising the pool, Rita and Larry were shocked to see how many children did not know how to swim. A perennial problem solver, Larry began teaching swimming lessons to the kids who came to their pool that summer. Their summer swim lessons grew from a site hobby, to a small seasonal business that operated May through July at multiple local swimming pools. One summer The Millers taught over 8,000 Tulsa

area children (and adults!) how to swim! Then in 1994, Rita and Larry decided to open a year-round swim education facility. As founding members of the United States Swim School Association (which grew into the International Swim School Association). The Millers learned that Year-Round facilities were becoming -round swim education program. Drowning statistics had been increasing year to year and it is at the heart of their mission to slow and eventually stop drownings from ever occurring. Here we are today, in January 2020, a year where we will not only celebrate our 1st birthday at the Jenks Miller Swim School, but we will also celebrate 60 years of educating families on the importance of swimming lessons, and water safety. Between you and me, this year is going to be a BIG one!
