Jenks Building Plan To Bring Sports Back Following OSSAA’s Vote By Kyle Salomon Last Friday, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association voted against the phased-in approach to opening athletics. The OSSAA board of directors’ vote was 7-6 against a proposed plan that would have eased schools into athletic activities. The vote opens the door for schools to begin hosting athletic camps and practices immediately. Jenks Public Schools’ Director of Athletics Tony Dillingham said he, his staff and the Jenks Public Schools’ administration are working hard to put a plan together that will put the safety of the athletes, coaches and everyone involved as the top priority. “We have to make sure that are kids are safe and we have to do everything we can to maintain that,” Dillingham said. “We will try to get back to some sort of normalcy as best we can and try and put ourselves in the position where we are able to come back in August and have regular academic instruction in the classroom and are able to start our fall sports.” Dillingham added that having the proper equipment will be vital for all Jenks athletics.
“Certainly, for us in a district of our size, I am certainly blessed to work with great administrators above me and to work with a great staff,” Dillingham said. “With what we have in place with our administrative leadership team, pandemic recovery task force, our emergency response team, they are all looking at plans to ensure safety and doing what is in the best interest of the kids.” Dillingham said every district across the state is working to put plans together following the OSSAA’s vote. “From district to district for everyone, it is determining whether we have the materials we need to make sure it is safe,” Dillingham said. “We have to finalize the plans and get them out to our coaches. The plan has to run through the administrative channels to make sure we are all comfortable with what are wanting to do.” Dillingham said there could be a finalized plan by the end of the week for how Jenks athletics will re-open. If the state’s regulations call for stricter policies, they will supersede the OSSAA’s Friday vote.
“We are all working to make sure we have the things in place that we need to provide a safe environment for our kids and our coaches,” Dillingham said. “We will continue to look at the CDC guidelines and make sure we meet every requirement before moving on to the next step and if we don’t, we stop.” The Jenks athletic director said they are working on a plan and a time frame for that plan and said he is fortunate to have the administration and staff Jenks employs in this process.

Jenks Public Schools Foundation launches ‘Trojans Together By Kyle Salomon The Jenks Public Schools Foundation has launched the “Trojans Together” program to help local businesses in their time of need. According to a news release on its website www.jenksfoundation.org/news/Trojans-together/, the Jenks Public Schools Foundation said it is hoping to give back to the businesses that have supported the JPSF throughout the years. “Over the years, the Jenks Public Schools Foundation has been fortunate to receive support from an incredible network of local businesses,” the release stated. “When we faced the need for funding, these businesses were there for us — immediately willing to invest in our Jenks students and teachers through their generous donations. Today, many of these local businesses are facing their own challenges when it comes to navigating the ‘new normal,’ which is why we want to do what we can to give back.” The “Trojans Together” initiative was created to give the Jenks community a chance to show gratitude and support for the local businesses that support the Jenks Public Schools Foundation by lending a helping hand during a challenging time. As part of the initiative, the JPSF said it is excited to provide the following directory of businesses. Business listings include supporters, who are currently open for business (or will be soon) and are ready to provide essential products and services to the community. “We are Trojans Together,” the release said. “No matter the challenge, no matter the call-to-action, we are here for each other in times of need — ready to lend a helping hand in any way we can to support our community.” BUSINESS DIRECTORY If you are a JPSF supporter and your business is not included in the directory, please contact the JPSF office at jenksfoundation@jenksps.org, and we will quickly update our list. Oklahoma Restaurant Association Raises $500,000 To Support Employees The Oklahoma Restaurant Association is supporting restaurant employees who have lost their jobs while the state continues to battle the pandemic. Even as some restaurants re-open, they do so without being fully staffed because of social distancing guidelines. ORA began its Hospitality Employee Relief Program at the beginning of the crisis, and to date has raised over $500,000 to help laid-off restaurant employees. Almost one in ten working Oklahomans are employed by the restaurant industry, and layoffs in the state have topped 65,000. In an industry with notoriously slim profit margins, restaurants have been hard hit economically since March. “Our goal since day one of this crisis has been to help in any way possible,” said Chandy Rice, CAE, Director of Education for the Oklahoma Restaurant Association. To date, the ORA has awarded 625 grants to laid-off restaurant workers thanks to generous donations including lead gifts from the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation in Tulsa and the Cresap Family Foundation in Oklahoma City. Their lead donations of $100,000 each launched the fund that has awarded grants in the amounts of $500 and $1,000. Applicants from the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas have reached more than 2,500 individuals during the application window. "Some have asked if we are going to stop now that restaurants are open. We won’t stop raising money until restaurants can return to their full capacity. Employees will feel the impact of diminished earnings for months to come,” said Rice. “We are exceedingly grateful to the many donors who did not hesitate to help. As individuals and businesses continue to give, it will enable us to award even more grants from our existing applicant pool.” The ORA thanks the following donors for their generosity to support Oklahoma’s restaurant workers during this difficult time: The Cresap Family Foundation, The Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation, Argonaut Private Equity Charitable Fund, Bank of America, Capital Distributing, Boston Beers, Corona Beers, Kathy Taylor, Krebs Brewing Company, ONEOK Foundation, Ricky and Lisa Burgess Giving Fund, Shiner Bock, The Vic and Susan Alonzia Charitable Fund, White Claw Seltzer, as well as various other individuals from across the state.
