Fallen Jenks Police Officer Remembered Saturday By Kyle Salomon Jenks Police Sgt. Brian Crain passed away Feb. 23 of 2019 and Saturday, he was honored one more time at the Jenks Police Headquarters. End of Watch (E.O.W.) Ride to Remember arrived Saturday morning at the Jenks Police Headquarters to honor the late Sgt. Crain. The primary purpose of the E.O.W. Ride to Remember is to raise awareness of the law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2019. The riders are stopping at each agency that had a fallen officer that year. There were 146 police officers across 30 states that tragically lost their lives. Each year, this event will honor fallen officers and give their family, friends, and co-workers a chance to remember them by riding and joining their names. Along their journey, the riders are followed by a customized dually truck towing a 28-foot trailer with graphics depicting the fallen officers, their agency, and sponsors, who are helping support them. Jenks Police Chief Cameron Arthur said it was nice to see an event like this to honor Sgt. Crain and in a time when multiple police departments across the country are going through difficult times. “These people are doing a phenomenal thing,” Arthur said. “They are putting in their time and effort to go to all these states. Having everyone come together, officers, families, citizens, everything, it is just a wonderful thing and I could not think of better timing. It is just really a nice thing to see.” Retired police officer and End of Watch Ride to Remember Foundation Chairman Jagrut Shah said when he retired, his dream was to do something to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. “We wanted to do something for all the departments and families who have lost officers,” Shah said. “We want to be a support system for these departments and the families. We want to make sure that these officers and these families know they are not forgotten.” Arthur said Sgt. Crain was a great police officer, but an even better person. “I said this to his father a few minutes ago, and I said this at Brian’s funeral … over my 30 years of law enforcement, I could probably think of something about each officer that I would change or that might have a problem with a citizen,” Arthur said. “Brian is the only one I can think of that I wouldn’t change one thing. Everyone had nothing but kind words for Brian Crain. You could not say a bad word about the guy. He was always happy, always smiling and the ultimate family man. Brian Crain is Jenks, America. It always hurts to lose an officer, I have lost way too many in my career, but to lose that type of an officer is irreplaceable. It is great to see him honored again.”

Jenks Police Officer Runs With Special Olympics Athlete To Honor Tradition This year, the Special Olympics Games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the traditions of the games is to run the torch with the athletes. It is called the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Even though they could not do it at the Special Olympics this year, Jenks resident and athlete James Holder ran four miles Saturday morning with Jenks Police Officer Richie Gonzalez to symbolize the running of the torch.

The annual Jenks City Wide Garage Sale has been scheduled to start at 7 a.m. July 11. The original scheduled time was set for May, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed.

A main water line for the City of Tulsa was bored through June 17 in Jenks by FaSco Fiber Optics. The FaSco crew said the water line was unmarked and the line was supposed to be roughly 20 yards to the west of where it was located.

Jenks Elementary Student Honored As Outstanding AAA School Safety Patroller

Maya Lehwald, who recently completed fourth grade at Jenks East Elementary, was honored Thursday by AAA Oklahoma as the Outstanding AAA School Safety Patroller for the 2019-2020 school year. Maya was recognized in a socially distanced ceremony in front of her home and she received a Visa gift card and a commemorative plaque. Representatives from AAA Oklahoma and staff members from Jenks East Elementary will gathered at Maya’s home for a surprise celebration. Maya said she was surprised and honored to receive the award. “It feels really nice, but I believe so many kids at the school could have won this award as well,” Maya said. “When I saw I made it on to the Safety Patrol, I was so excited, but I wish the school year had gone a lot longer.” As a School Safety Patroller, Maya helped students attending after-school programs to keep control and maintain expectations for safety. She treated other students with respect and showed her peers how to demonstrate leadership and the characteristics of a standup citizen. AAA Oklahoma officials and Maya’s fourth-grade teachers came together to issue the following statement on Maya and her accomplishments. “She possesses excellent leadership skills, with teachers describing her as mature beyond her age. When Maya heard there would be an opportunity to be a School Safety Patroller, she took detailed notes on requirements and expectations – even inspiring other students to so as the advisor shared. Her attributes make her a leader in every sense of the word.

She comes to school with a positive and enthusiastic attitude, ready to accept the day’s challenges and has fun doing it. She strives to not only be better herself, but helps other students see their true potential. Maya helped students attending after-school care with the ability to keep control and maintain expectations for safety. Even during difficulties with many kids in one area, Maya remained calm and collected. Through it all, Maya was I control of the situation and confident in her leadership abilities. Maya leads with support and encouragement and has a wonderful way of being strict and on-task with an air of kindness and fairness. Maya treats other students with respect, leads by example and demonstrates the true definition of being a stand-up citizen. Even during distance learning, Maya has continued to display leadership in weekly video meetings. It is an honor to recognize Maya’s diligence and professionalism with the School Safety Patroller of the Year Award.” For nearly 100 years, AAA Oklahoma has sponsored and provided major support for the AAA School Safety Patrol by supplying training materials, recognition programs for service, and patrol equipment, including the familiar badge and belt. Over 1,750 patrollers currently participate in the AAA School Safety Patrol program in 80 Oklahoma elementary schools. It is the largest school-based safety program in the world with more than 679,000 Patrollers in 35,000 schools across North America and 30 countries. The School Safety Patrol provides a safe environment for child pedestrians and offers a wide spectrum of educational opportunities for children.

Tuesday Is Final Day To Enter Oklahoma Aquarium’s ‘Dive With The Bull Sharks’ Contest The last day to enter the Oklahoma Aquarium’s annual “Dive with the Bull Sharks” contest is at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. The drawing of the winner will take place at 5 p.m. July 7 at the Oklahoma Aquarium. Chief Marketing Officer Andrea Leitch will run the event with 2018 winner Jodi Cooper on site as well. This is the third annual “Dive with the Bull Sharks” contest the Oklahoma Aquarium has hosted. The Jenks-based aquarium has the largest collection of bull sharks in the world. The contest is held in association with “Sharklahoma”, a month-long celebration of sharks at the Oklahoma Aquarium in collaboration with the Jenks Chamber of Commerce. The grand finale of “Sharklahoma” will give one contest winner the opportunity to swim with the sharks in the world-renowned tank. The winner will wear a 40-pound, $6,000 chain mail suit and a GoPro to swim alongside scuba-certified aquarium staff. All contest entrants must be certified scuba divers, 18 or older, and provide their certification number on the application. The winner will receive an all-inclusive trip including transportation, hotel, and meal vouchers. The dive takes place on a date of the aquarium’s choosing in late July, so entrants must be available to dive on this date. The diver will be required to sign a liability waiver and complete a check-out dive prior to diving with the bull sharks. The contest is valid for U.S. citizens only.
