By Kyle Salomon For the first time, the annual Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk took place in Jenks Saturday at the Riverwalk Crossing. Hundreds of people came to honor their loved ones. Heather Borsuk, Out of the Dark Suicide Prevention Walk Team Member, said the 2020 version of the event went well. “It was really amazing,” Borsuk said. “I feel like we have received nothing but positive feedback from the vendors, volunteers and participants. We spaced the time out, so people could come and walk if they were concerned about being in a group, but most of the participants still came during the 10 a.m. to noon time slot. We had about 500 walkers. I was impressed with how many people came out.” Borsuk said the support they received from local businesses was incredible. “We had a lot of support from so many businesses,” Borsuk said. “I would like to thank everyone at the Riverwalk Crossing and Mike Givens with Invisible Man Productions for hosting this event.” Here is list of the Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk Corporate Sponsors, In-Kind Sponsors, Volunteers, and Vendors: CORPORATE SPONSORS -Sonshine Foundation -Postal Annex -Forest Ridge IN-KIND SPONSORS -Burn Co. One Fire with Creek Nation was also there Saturday, and I am very thankful for them. There was a spirit of hope. The speakers were amazing.” CONT on pg 2

Hundreds Walk... CONT from pg 1 The speakers for the event were Mike Brose with the Mental Health Association, Aaron Ashworth with Veteran Mental Health and Emily Farmer with Teen and Young Adult Mental Health. “The amount of resources and vendors that were there were outstanding,” Borsuk said. “The resources, the hope and encouragement in the face of a pandemic was absolutely breathtaking. We fought really hard to and have it live and in person. It truly felt like people were blessed for being there.” Borsuk said they would like to have the event in Jenks again next year. “We have a tentative date for next year set up and we are just waiting to sign the contract if they will have us back at the Riverwalk Crossing,” Borsuk said. “We would love to have it their again. It is such a beautiful venue and such an awesome atmosphere.” Borsuk said the guest speakers all had touching messages to share, but one message stuck out to her from Saturday about the perspective on mental health. “It’s just like cancer or diabetes,” Borsuk said of the message that resonated with her. “Sometimes it is treatable, sometimes it is manageable, sometimes it is fatal. It’s just like any other illness, we just don’t treat it like that. If you ask a friend to go to the movies and they are home with the flu, they will say no, I can’t go I have the flu. Someone who is struggling with depression, doesn’t say I am depressed today and can’t get out of bed. They hide it. To have an environment and a place to be able to talk about it was something a lot of people took away. I feel like it was an opportunity for healing. It was a beautiful day, grueling but gratifying.”

VISITING JENKS? WE GO T YOU COVERED By Kyle Salomon Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather is shifting from the summer heat to the cooler temperatures, which creates some beautiful days in this area. Jenks is quickly becoming a landing spot for tourists from across the country, as more attractions are finding their way just west of the Arkansas River. If you are visiting Jenks, America for vacation or for an event, such as a wedding (cough, cough), here are some fun things to do while you are here: OKLAHOMA AQUARIUM The Oklahoma Aquarium has become Jenks’ main attraction throughout the past decade. This facility is the only aquarium in Oklahoma and gives you a feeling like you are next to an ocean. From local and global marine life, there are thousands of animals to see when you enter the doors of the Oklahoma Aquarium, including the largest Bull Shark tank in the world. If you are visiting Jenks, going to the aquarium is not a suggestion, it is a must-see attraction. RIVERWALK CROSSING The Riverwalk Crossing provides entertainment for all ages. Whether it is dining options at Los Cabos, Andolini’s or Burn Co. BBQ, or live music at the Riverwalk Amphitheatre, the Riverwalk Crossing has
you covered. All its stores and restaurants face the Arkansas River, so there is plenty of good views, while you are walking down the Riverwalk. A crisp fall evening is the perfect time to go and check out what the Riverwalk Crossing is all about. GOLF SUITES On the north end of the Riverwalk Crossing, you might notice a large net with a three-story facility on the end of it. That would be Golf Suites. Regardless if you are a golf fan or not, Golf Suites is a place to go for fun and entertainment. On top of the many golf game options, there is food, drinks, live music, and other forms of entertainment for people of all ages to enjoy. WALKING TRAILS Jenks provides its walkers, runners, and bikers with plenty of amazing trials to enjoy, while you are visiting our town. You combine with that beautiful fall weather and you have hit the jackpot. There are several walking trails that run along the riverfront by the Oklahoma Aquarium, which lead down into the Riverwalk Crossing area or there are plenty of walking trails and areas in the downtown corridor. Elm Street from the Creek Turnpike to 111th Street also provides a wonderful trail to walk, run or ride your bike. HISTORIC DOWNTOWN MAIN STREET There is just something special about a small-town main street and Jenks provides just that with its historic downtown Main Street area. Whether you are looking to shop, get some food or get some tasty desert, downtown Jenks has got you covered. Between the vintage stores, antique shops, local restaurants, desert places and coffee shop, you will not leave downtown Jenks disappointed.

VETERAN’S PARK, BARK WEST, PARK WEST, PARK CENTRAL You like parks? Jenks is the place to be. Veteran’s Park gives you a scenic walking or running trail that shows off the natural beauty Jenks has to offer. There is also a pond for anyone who is interested casting the line to fish. Veteran’s Park also provides a playground set, plenty of picnic tables and an ever-so-popular skate park. Bark West is on the south side of Park West. Bark West, as you might have guessed, is the dog park in Jenks. It is a fun place to bring your K-9 and let him or her off the leash, so they can run free and enjoy time making other dog friends. Park West has a lot of sports fields for people to enjoy a fun game of frisbee, flag football or a family softball game. Park Central is Jenks’ oldest park and is located on the northwest corner of the Main Street and Elm Street intersection behind the McDonald’s. Park Central provides basketball courts, a splash pad, and a playground for children to enjoy. Make sure to visit at least one of the parks Jenks has to offer while you are here. Jenks Prepared For ‘Physical’ Matchup With Broken Arrow
By Kyle Salomon Class 6A-1 No. 2 Jenks will take on Class 6A-1 No. 3 Broken Arrow at 7:35 p.m. Friday at Allan Trimble Stadium in both teams’ first game in district play this season. Both the Trojans and Tigers were set to open Class 6A-1 District 1 action last week, but due to COVID-19 situations, both games were canceled. Broken Arrow’s matchup with Westmoore was called off during the week due to the COVID-19 numbers on Westmoore’s team, but Jenks didn’t find out its game with Enid was canceled until about 35 minutes prior to kick off last Friday. The Trojans were on the field getting warmed up when the Garfield County Health Department called Enid Public Schools and instructed them to cancel

the football game between the Trojans and Plainsmen. Enid’s junior varsity squad played Guthrie earlier that week and a Guthrie player, who played in that game, tested positive for COVID-19 several days later, so any Plainsmen player, who participated in that junior varsity game could have been exposed. Jenks head coach Keith Riggs said even though the health and safety of the players, coaches, staff, and fans are the No. 1 priority, it was still difficult having to tell his players they weren’t going to be able to play. “The kids were pretty disappointed,” Riggs said. “Throughout a week of preparation, you slowly build up with your preparation and anticipation. The climax is really the start of the game. We were almost to that point and then find out you won’t be playing. It was tough to tell the kids. CONT on pg 11
Jenks’ Trip To Enid Ends In Canceled Game, Confusion The stage was set. It said 6:20 p.m. on the clock and the Jenks football team was dressed out in all-white road uniforms getting warmed up for its first district game of the 2020 season.
punches when things change and deal with it and keep moving forward.” To top off the confusion, Enid still went through with its Senior Night festivities for its players, cheer and pom and the band members.
In a world that has gone haywire, playing 48 minutes under the Friday night lights gives these young men a sense of normalcy that just isn’t there in day-to-day life right now.
According to Enid officials, the Garfield County Health Department gave them the “OK” to go ahead with those plans. However, the football game was to be canceled.
I had just made the two-hour drive from Jenks to Enid with my father and were walking into Dr. Bruce Selby Stadium. As we entered the gate, the Trojans were on their way back to the locker room.
It seems to me if you are worried enough about the potential exposure to COVID-19 from your players to cancel the football game, you probably should be just as worried about your senior players walking with linked arms with their parents, but what do I know? I can’t imagine being a high school athlete right now or for that matter, a high school student. Every day you wake up, you have no idea what you’re going to be told to do. You have no idea if that will be your last day in the classroom or your final day suiting up with your teammates.
I didn’t think anything of it. I just figured they were heading back for their pregame talk with their coaches before taking on the Plainsmen. Boy was I wrong. As we prepared to walk onto the field, I was met by Jenks Assistant Athletic Director Jason Culler and Athletic Director Tony Dillingham. They informed me the game had just been canceled. At first, I thought they were joking, but I quickly realized they were as serious as they could be. Culler told me Garfield County Health Officials had just called Enid to inform them they could not play the game because of a possible COVID-19 exposure from one of the Plainsmen players. Enid’s junior varsity squad played Guthrie’s JV this past Monday and a Guthrie player has tested positive for the virus since that game, so Garfield County Health Officials put the axe on Friday’s varsity district game.
The mixed signals these young people are receiving daily would drive just about anyone crazy, but they handle it well. Jenks is scheduled to host Broken Arrow next Friday in another district showdown. The Tigers’ game against Westmoore, which was scheduled for Friday, was also canceled because of COVID-19. No one knows for sure if the game will be played next week, but these young men will go back to work and prepare as if they are playing. To do that takes discipline. Much more discipline than I would have had at their age.
The stunning news came as a massive disappointment to Jenks players, coaches, staff and fans, as many questions were raised at the timing of the announcement. At 6:20 p.m., Jenks and Enid were both on the field preparing to open district play. By 6:23 p.m. the game was canceled, and these young men and their families were left wondering how and why. “It is really unfortunate for both teams, especially with the timing, just right before kickoff.” Jenks coach Keith Riggs said. “Both teams have prepared all week for the game. I know our kids are very disappointed. They were looking forward to their first district game. That is the situation we are in right now. It can change at moments notice. We have to be able to roll with the

‘Physical’ Matchup cont from pg 7 I know they were certainly excited for the opportunity to play.” Riggs said his players had come to grips with it Saturday and understood there is a lot they can’t control and all they can do is move forward and focus on what is next. “They have handled the whole year very well,” Riggs said. “They have held up well through it all. The things they had to go through in the spring and summer and the things we weren’t able to do, it would have been easy to sit back and blame others and complain about the circumstances, but they didn’t. They realized it was a blessing to do the things we got to do and to be able to play this season at all. Really, I believe they have come to appreciate even more knowing what a great opportunity it is to play football. They are trying to take advantage of every opportunity they can get.” Broken Arrow comes to town with a 2-1 record. The Tigers have wins against Bentonville West (Arkansas) 50-23 and Union 14-7. Their one loss came against Class 6A-1 No. 1 Owasso 32-6. “Broken Arrow is a very good football program,” Riggs said. “They are good every year. Just like the last few years, they are a physical football team. They want to run the football and control the line of scrimmage. They are very physical on defense as well. They want to play an attack style of defense. We both want to run the ball and control the line of scrimmage, so it is going to be a very physical football game.” Riggs said the Tigers have switched up their defensive schemes form years past. “They are a little bit unorthodox from what you traditionally see,” Riggs said. “They will have some snaps where all 11 guys are standing up and moving around to try and keep you from having an idea of where they are going to fit up front or what coverage they are in. They also like to move their DB’s around quite a bit. They really force you to make your decisions post snap instead of pre-snap, so it puts a lot of pressure on your offense.” With Jenks not having played a game in two weeks and Broken Arrow being a rivalry game, Riggs said it is important for his players to focus on preparation and not emotion this week. “It is a big game and we haven’t played in a while,” Riggs said. “It would be easy to let your emotions get the best of you, but you tend to make more mistakes when you are controlled by your emotions instead of your preparation. We are going to try and have a great week of preparation and have a good understanding of what Broken Arrow likes to do and go into the game prepared. When you are prepared, you have confidence and that is what we are going to need Friday night.” The Tigers are coached by David Alexander, who was an assistant at Jenks for several years prior to taking the head job with Broken Arrow.
