Secrets of Successful Multiplatform Journalists – Carolina Ballroom F-H with Allen Breed and Tim Rogers of The Associated Press

Journalists at all levels are expected to be and do everything these days; from photography to social media to videography... stories now need to be told in a variety of ways. Do you have the skills you need to succeed? Need some refreshers? Courtesy of The Associated Press, our instructors are experts who will lead a hands-on workshop to ensure you have the tools you need. Allen G. Breed joined The Associated Press as a news clerk in Louisville, Ky. He was named Pikeville, Ky., correspondent in 1991. In March 1998, Breed was named Southeast regional writer, based in Raleigh, N.C. He is currently a national writer attached to the News Features Department and has covered a number of hurricanes, including Katrina and Ike, and has assisted in the coverage of such national stories as the D.C. sniper case, the Columbia space shuttle disaster and the Deepwater Horizon explosion. He has also done original computer-assisted reports, including packages on physicians who grow tobacco and penalties for adults who left children to die in hot vehicles. Tim Rogers is the news editor for The Associated Press for South Carolina and North Carolina. He has worked in many capacities as an editor and reporter for the last 25 years which coincides with the rapid expansion of the capabilities of newspapers and traditional text journalists to deliver multi-format journalism to customers in a variety of ways.

10:45 – 11:45 a.m.

Enemy of the People? Why 'Real' Journalism Matters Now More Than Ever – Carolina Ballroom F-H with Dr. Chris Roberts of the University of Alabama

Nationally, trust in media is at an historic low. Are local newspapers tarred with the same image problems? If so, how do we improve our image and credibility? How does all of this impact the need for aggressive journalism? Have people quit listening to the press and written us off as the "Enemy of the People?" Join us as Dr. Chris Roberts, Associate Professor in the University of Alabama's College of Communication and Information Sciences, discusses the vital role of the Fourth Estate. Prior to his career in higher education, he worked at The State in Columbia, where he served as Sunday Business Editor, Investigations Editor and Database Editor. He also worked as Weekend City Editor, Technology Columnist and Database Editor at The Birmingham (Ala.) News. Roberts earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Alabama and received his doctorate from the University of South Carolina, where he served as an instructor and Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism.

Noon – 2:15 p.m.

Weekly Newspaper & Associate Member Awards Luncheon – Carolina Ballroom A-E

2:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Counselors Off The Cuff – Carolina Ballroom F-H

Join SCPA Executive Director Bill Rogers, SCPA Attorneys Taylor Smith and Jay Bender, Attorney Carl Muller and USC Media Law Assistant Professor Eric Robinson for a no-holds-barred discussion on legal matters. All general or specific topics/questions are fair game, but we suspect the conversation will include at least some talk of open government and First Amendment issues.

6 – 7:30 p.m.

President’s Reception – Atrium

7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Daily Newspaper Awards Dinner – Carolina Ballroom A-E

Following the Daily Awards Dinner, the Marriott Rocks at Midlands' Lounge and patio area will stay open for celebratory cocktails. Or venture out onto Main Street, where there are several bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Dear attendee: Welcome to Columbia, the venue for this year’s South Carolina Press Association Annual Meeting! This year marks the 145th annual gathering of SCPA. I chose Columbia for this year’s event due to its central location, which makes it convenient for most of our members. 106 Outlet Pointe Blvd. Columbia, SC 29210 (803) 750-9561 scpress.org 2016 - 2017 Officers President Ellen C. Priest

Congratulations to all of our award winners! Community journalism continues to be the main focus of SCPA’s 101 member newspapers. Their stories are read by millions of people each week, and newspapers remain the most trusted news source nationwide. There are no “alternative facts” here in South Carolina.

News & Press, Darlington

Vice President, Dailies Michael Smith Herald-Journal Spartanburg

Vice President, Weeklies Jane Pigg

This year’s 3,300 contest entries made the judges’ decisions particularly difficult and were representative of the outstanding journalism, layout and design, and photography happening each and every day at this state’s newspapers.

SCPA’s staff has continued to work hard this year. Members benefited from educational courses and seminars, stayed on top of legislative issues important to them, had access to legal advice, and benefited from revenue generated through its advertising networks. Be sure to thank the SCPA staff while here for all the hard work they put into this event, as well as everything they do for our members every day.
