The Story of Neihardt Neihardt was built in 1938, with its first hall, Carrie Belle Raymond hall, built in the fall of 1932. Raymond was designed by Davis and Wilson and cost $217,000 to initially create. Additions were added later to make room for about 600 students, but the original facility housed 170 women and a room cost $60 per semester, with a $26 monthly fee charged for board, fondly remembered as the“good ol’ days”.

Although it was originally known as the Women’s Residence Halls prior to 1973, Neihardt was renamed to what we recognize today at the request of its residents to the John G. Neihardt Residential Center. It’s been a place of home, friendship, family, and memories for years, and this tribute magazine aims to bring together a small collection of memories, photos, and stories that are united by our overwhelming love of Neihardt.

“Neihardt is my home. The community is family. There have been more times than I can count where a group of people have sat in the sunroom and talked until sun rise. The discussions had are always deep and insightful. I leave every one of those sessions with a new perspective and outlook on the world. Neihardt has helped shape me into who I am today, and I am forever grateful. Amanda Melcher 04

“Neihardt is a home away from home to me. I can always walk down a hallway and see someone I care about, smiling back at me, or giving it their all. Everything about Neihardt, from the study rooms that feel like a family living room to the wide open courtyard in the center of it all, feels like a home more than just an average dorm. I love it so much! Jenn Paulson 09

“Honestly, some of my favorite stories of me and a bunch of my friends gathering in the Love 2 lounge and procrastinating hardcore as well as playing Smash Bros. for the Wii U. We spent far too may days there, but let me tell you, I wouldn’t change it for a thing. Especially hearing good ol’ Michael Lembree make some very inhuman noises. But it was good fun and made me happy to be living in Neihardt, where I had people like me.” Zoe Battaglia 10

Time for Tea: A Collection of Submissions

“I have taken my shirt off in the public spaces of Neihardt more times than I can count. It’s been one hell of a year!” Maxwell Adams

“I’ve spent more hours in the study rooms here than I’ve spent in my actual room and I’ve slept even less this is fine” Nakita Nouth-Chea

“I remember grilling outside on the new grill and seeing people goofing off on the roof while some poeple threw shoes at their friends’ windows! That was nice.” Griffin Meeks

“There was some sort of tailgate going on one time so I was throwing my crocs at my friend’s window to get his attention. It didn’t work” Michael Lembree

“Neihardt been good to me. This is where my friends are and where I’ve met people who care. Its pretty awesome. This happens many ways.” Lincoln 12

“After enjoying their tea in the sunroom, a group of students join up to go to the Pine Room, the words “dungeons”, “dragons”, and “roll stats” flying off their tongues. Not long after poring through rule books do the students find themselves clad in the armor of a knight, able to wield the powerful magic of a druid, or taking to the shadows as a thief. Standing before their fearless leader, the students of the sunroom crew began their journey as the adventurers of the Crew of the Sun. Their heroic deeds in the city of Nighhearth, fighting against the evils of a terrible and powerful vampiric bard, will ring across the world in story and song.” Ryan J. Wallace 14

“Neihardt has the best dorm community I have seen. I have made so many close friends because of living there. The sunroom is the hangout spot whether it is Tea Time or just to hang out with friends. I remember staying up really late with friends just talking and getting to know each other. I’m gonna miss the community Neihardt would foster. Alex Molnar

Closing Notes Neihardt was built in 1932, and is scheduled to close in the summer of 2019. In the many years it has served UNL, it has touched many lives and sheltered many students from the whirlwind of university life. It has been a surrogate family for some, a source of friendship and warmth for most, and for all who lived in these halls, it’s been nothing short of a home. The floors may be separated, but our hearts are united, and although we may be scattered across campus, our memories will remain here, in the heart of Neihardt.

Because, after all, “home is where the Hardt is.

This project was created to tie together the memories of those who lived in Neihardt in the past few years, and is not intended for sale. Each photo, design, and image, with the exception of the t-shirt design, is courtesy of Jenn Paulson.
