Final reflection

Jenna Layton Final Reflection Throughout this semester I have learned that genre doesn’t just apply to music. I learned that any kind of composition or work is considered a different type of genre. Along with these genres also come the conventions of the genre. These conventions are specific details that are contained in a certain type of genre. For example, Facebook is a social media website that allows people to be connected all over the world and post videos, pictures, and status and also create your own groups and events. These conventions are, for the most part, unique to Facebook, as you wouldn’t see someone posting an event page on twitter. Along with genre, I have also learned more about the so-called rhetorical situation. Because of this course I can now talk about the rhetorical situation and why it is important in being a skilled writer. The rhetorical situation is composing your writing in a way that would be most effective towards your audience. Understanding rhetoric is important because it shapes your paper into something that could be moving or persuasive by using logos, ethos, and pathos. There are also many other types of rhetoric that help shape a paper, such as, audience, tone, and arrangement. All of these factors of the rhetorical situation allow a writer to compose a well-written paper in the most effective way. The third project in this course has added to, challenged, and complicated my theories and practices of composing a paper. Before this course I would just write and only think about the requirements I needed to finish the paper and get my point across. However, this course gave me a whole different view when it comes to writing a paper. Because of this new knowledge, I now know how to make a paper interesting and moving. For project three I was able to come up with three different genres based off

of my research topic, littering. The first genre is a sculpture/garbage can with a bunch of littering facts and warning words pasted onto a garbage can. This garbage can will stand as a persuasive warning to throw away your garbage. The second genre I am creating is a comic book about a messy man named Joe who never picks up after himself and in the end The Litterman is going to make him pick up all the trash he littered and also inform Joe about what those objects could have done to our environment. This comic is a challenging genre as I do not read comics and I also am not very creative, but I thought it would be a unique way to present my research. The third genre I am creating is a General Surgeons Warning video about smokers and their cigarette butts. This was the most fun genre, but also complicated because I had to write the script as well as make the words go along with the different scenes of the clip. This was also very complicated as I do not know much about using iMovie or film making at all.
