President’s Report
I am proud to introduce you to the Belgian Blue 2012 yearbook, in which I know you will find a lot of interesting reading. As I write this address we have seen strong beef prices during the spring and early summer, unfortunately the prices have slipped in August. Fortunately for the Belgian Blues cross bred producers prices remain as strong as they were in the spring, making the Belgian Blue sires a sound financial investment for the Irish farmer. The Belgian Blue breeds attributes as a terminal sire are short gestation, ease of calving, docility, a carcass grade improver on any dam and a high meat to bone ratio. As a breed we are delighted with the excellent work being carried out on Belgian Blue crossbred progeny in Tully by ICBF. This research is being carried out on Belgian Blue progeny from a host of different breed’s of dams. This will show the true potential of the Belgian Blue Breed for lean meat yield, making it a very healthy eating option.
On the show front our breeders are continuing to display outstanding specimens of the Pure Bred BB breed. In the cross bred show ring the BB crosses are very dominant with some of the best show men choosing BBX as their preferred exhibit, that in its self is a great tribute to the BB breed to these I extend a big thank you.
In 2011/12 the society held classes for young handlers across Ossory, Tinahely and Tullamore, these young handlers are the breeders of the future, they have shown a fantastic interest in the breed, the breed will be in good hands in the future.
As a society we continue to increase our membership, thanks to a very hard working council and an excellent secretary, Mary Duggan. The main objective of the society is to increase our market share of the Cross Bred beef and dairy Market.
From a personal point of view it is a great honour for me to be elected President of the society. I would extend deep gratitude to Cyril Martin for the work he put in as President and wish him every success in his future breeding. Unfortunately we have lost some great Belgian Blue members, none more than Jim Mc Donald to his family we extend our sincere sympathy.
To conclude I wish every breeder of a Belgian Blue animals, whether it be pure bred or cross bred, dairy or beef, a successful year ahead and congratulate you on making a sound financial investment. Jarlath Duggan President

Italian Feedlots Demand Irish Belgian Blues (Farmers Journal April 2012)
Beef breed of preference in Italy The cross bred Belgian Blue weanling produced in Ireland is the beef animal of preference in Italian feed lots as they out perform on weight gain and carcass gain on the other cattle types (pedigree continental breeds) being finished in Italy. Because of the crossbred nature of the Irish Belgian Blue Weanlings being exported to Italy high levels of weight gain can be achieved, as they are coming of grass / store type of a diet responding very well on the intensive finishing systems in Italy, with the bulls and heifers being finished under 18 months. The Belgian Blue has a smaller stomach and therefore they will eat less than other continental cattle, giving them another advantage.

Market has growth potential The Italian market has potential to grow as the percentage of Irish beef being slaughtered is only approx 5% of the Italian factories. This gives the Irish weanling producer the opportunity to produce more weanlings for this market. Over the years the Irish Exporters have Italian Feedlots

The Italian farmers pay a premium price for Irish Belgian Blue cross bred weanlings, they can do this easily as when the cattle go to slaughter the Irish Born Belgian Blues are paid a

always paid a premium for the Belgian Blue weanlings being exported to the Italian feedlots over cattle for other markets.

Hardier The Belgian Blue cross bred is hardier than pure-breeds. The other cattle available to the Italian market are mainly pedigree continental cattle from France. The Belgian Blue weanlings are being finished on slatted units on approx half the farms in Italy. The Italian feedlot managers can confirm that the Belgian Blue cattle being imported from Ireland have no problems while housed on slats.

Vaccination The Irish exporter’s and the Italian farmers prefer to buy cattle that have been vaccinated as they have a greater resistances to virus and recover much quicker than non vaccinated cattle, with minimum effect on thrive. If these animals are done as calves they will have the added advantage while on the Irish farm.

NDC Liquid Milk Suppliers 2011 produce U grade carcass from the Dairy Herd with Belgian Blue Sire The Gowing’s family from Kilminchy, Portlaoise, Co Laois have kindly agreed to share their experience of using Belgian Blue on their Dairy herd with the Irish Belgian Blue Cattle Society.
The Top Liquid Milk Suppliers award at the 2011 National Dairy Quality Milk Awards was awarded to Michael, Kitty and Gerard Gowing, Kilminchy, Portlaoise, Co Laois.
The Gowing‘s first priority in their Dairy/ Beef operation is the cow. The cow herd is mainly made up of BF/HO cross cows to give a good sized cow, with an average yield of over 1800 and closer to 1900. The herd is split calving spring and autumn, this gives the advantage that the heifers can be calved down at approx 30 months. This is the preferred time as the preference is for the heifer to grow in frame rather than flesh giving a better cow type in the herd.
The Gowing’s were introduced to using Belgian Blue by their local AI representative 25 years ago. The Belgian Blue had continued to be used on the Dairy herd for their ease of calving, gestation length, carcass quality and docility.
Ease of calving, this is significant factor on the Gowing’s farm where the cow is the first priority in the herd. The light bone and the low birth weights are the main contributors to the ease of calving from the Belgian Blue sired progeny.
The Belgian Blue bull runs with the cows at grass when they have finished using AI for the replacements. The Belgian Blue AI bulls are selected with the use of calving figures, but the final decision is taken based on the information from the local AI representative. As the AI representative will have the information on how the Belgian Blue bull is calving within the Dairy herd.
Gestation length, the short gestation of the Belgian Blue gives the extra days milking and the lower birth weight from the short gestation contributes to the ease of calving.
Carcass quality, the Belgian Blue can add two grade’s over the dairy cow.

The Belgian Blue bulls off the Dairy herd were slaughtered recently at 24 months killed into U grade with a fat score of 2plus at a carcass weight of 479kgs. The steers and heifers kill an average of a 1.5 grades over the cow. The Gowing’s are very pleased with the carcass from the progeny of the stock bull especially with the length of the carcass.

Docility of the Belgian Blue this leads to easier management when handling especially with the heifers and steers, the bulls will always be handled with caution as is the case with all bulls.
Housing: The Belgian Blue progeny are housed and finished on rubber slats, the same as the other progeny being finished. The Belgian Blues have no issue with lameness when on slats. They perform the same as the other animals been finished.

Hall of Fame Award 2012 Eamonn Butler
The Belgian Blue Cattle Society in recognition to outstanding commitment to the Belgian Blue Breed wish to nominate Tipperary man Eamonn Butler as their recipient of the 2012 Belgian Blue Hall of Fame award. Eamonn has been a breeder for 25 years, Eamonn runs his pedigree Belgian Blue herd at Dolla, Nenagh, along with his main farming enterprise the Dairy Herd. He was on the board of Arrabawn Co op for a number of years.
Eamonn like many Belgian Blue Breeders started out with the purchase of his first breeding heifer along with his neighbour Dan Grace from Michael Woods, Drogheda Clonmore Gloria. Gloria proved a very valuable foundation female for the Dolla herd. The Dolla herd sold one of the earlier Irish Bred bulls into AI, Dolla Ian to Dovea AI Station. The Dolla bloodlines went on to form the foundation female for many new breeders.
Eamonn is a man that likes to keep out of the limelight but his contribution to the running of the Irish Belgian Blue Cattle has been enormous to the council and in the running of events be it Judging, stewarding or helping out new breeders over his years on council and as a active member of the society.

The late Jim McDonnell Ballygoman, Barntown, Co Wexford
The passing of Jim Mc Donnell one of life’s great gentlemen was met with great sadness across the Belgian Blue members who had the honor on knowing Jim.

of Belgian Blue cross breeding in the Wexford & South Wicklow area in the 1990s. This led to Belgian Blue topping semen usage in Enfield AI for a number of years. Jim Mc Donnell’s trade mark in breeding is widely recognized across Wexford & South Wicklow and indeed across the country.
Jim specialized in breeding quality weanlings for live export to Italy on the farm he bought in his adopted County Wexford. Jim bred prize winning crosses including the champion Belgian Blue cross at Carrick on Shannon in 2000 & 2001 exhibited by the purchaser Martin Ryan, Thurles. Jim commenced Belgian Blue pure breeding in the late 1990’s.
Jim joined the Council of the Belgian Blue society in 2001. Jim’s contribution to council has was enormous in organizing events, liaison with ICBF on behalf of the Belgian Blue Cattle Society. Jim’s technical advice on breeding has made a major benefit to our society members and to UK and Belgian breeders when on trips to these countries.
Jim Mc Donnell was reared on a mixed farm outside Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. He played with the Tipperary County Senior Hurling Team in the late 50’s winning a National League medal in 1959. Jim To his wife Margaret and family we express our played with U.C.D. winning a Fitzgibbon medal in sincerest sympathy on the passing of Jim. 1958. Jim excelled at the game, one of his friends said about Jim, he was a gentleman with the exception of the duration of his matches as a player. Jim as part of his support of Wexford GAA initiated the sponsorship by Wexford Creamery of Wexford G.A.A. in 1991. His education and career continued in agriculture with a Master in Agriculture Science and he worked with Agricultural Advisory Services, Cork Marts, I.M.P. and Wexford Creamery
While employed in Wexford Creamery, Jim established a unique breeding service to provide information, direction & superior imported genetics for dairy & beef breeding. The identification and importation of highly muscled, easy calving Belgian Blue Genetics from Belgium and the U.K led to a spectacular increase in the use

The female champion went to Castlecuff Evelin by Empire D’Ochain out of Castlecuff Ada bred by Denis Foynes, Clonaslee, Laois sold for €3000 to Aidan Barnett, Co Laois

This was the first of two spring sales for 2012. A small entry drew a big crowd with an unusual start to the day the IBBCS hosted a Shave or Dye in conjunction with the 2FM Radio, the number one choice of hair colour remained true to breed blue the sale with a commentary from George Candler the Auctioneer. A sum of €1121 was raised.
