I have gained inspiration from these publications and others during my research. I have looked into different aspects such as type, format, layout, stock considerations etc. From ‘The Easy Handbook of Typography’ I really liked the title design with the use of the badge and ribbon aesthetic and it gave me ideas for my own title design. The ‘Little Spines’ publication gave me an insight into the varied options for binding and the creativity you can have with it. I liked the square format from ‘Ethics & Design’ and how the separate aspects have been linked together. The stock used on the cover is also attractive. Finally, I found the bright contrasting colours on ‘I Love’ really eyecatching and different, I also like how opposing pages in the spread are different colours, creating a further contrast.

Most of my research for this publication has been internet based, but I also felt I learnt a lot throughout the workshops and it helped put all the information I was getting into context. I found it a lot easier categorising my research as I was going through as it made incorporating it into the layouts in my publication much simpler as it was already in groups. I also asked for a sample back to be sent in the post from Benwells, I was really happy when it arrived as the samples were amazing and of such high quality. It was great to look through them and to be able to see the techniques in real life.
I really enjoyed creating the diagrams for my publication and I am happy with how they turned out. I wanted them all to be really cohesive as a set so when I was drawing them I made sure that they all fit alongside the same angle, not only with my proccess ones but also with foiling and binding etc. Even though this took more time, as some images needed adapting, I’m glad I bothered. The style of my illustrations also went through some developement: I changed from filling with block colour to a simple line, I think this looks a lot more professional and effective. The labelling has also been adapted, I think using a key with single letters is a lot better.

I started off my logo designs with a few drawings which I then developed in Illustrator. My initial colour scheme was CMYK but in my layout designs it was slightly to garish so I adjusted it to just use the cyan.

I initially started working with layout when I decided on my square format out of a few possible ideas. I then moved on to paper where I sketched a few examples for possible double page spreads. I found this made moving onto the computer easier, although I still experimented.
