There were also a lot of possibilities

about what I was including and

to push the brief further than just

version of what I already have.

The most difficult part of this brief was deciding on a theme for the design. To help with I looked back at the initial criteria that was given and the word ‘freedom’ jumped out at me. This then led on to the saying, ‘free as a bird.’ Once I had settled on this idea my work ran a lot more smoothly and I found that from doing my initial illustrations a more specific look of ‘tropical’ had been discovered. This helped the composition of my patterns as the introduction of the floral aspects added depth and more aspects to work with. Another problem I faced was how to apply colour. I couldn’t decide on whether to use block filling or a linear effect and also the original tones I used seemed too bright and garish which I felt would look too over powering on the products. Research really helped with this and I found that when I applied aspects of the ideas I had seen, everything seemed to come together. My favourite part of the process was applying my design to a variety of bags and cases. I enjoyed this because I liked seeing what I had created coming into context applied to products and viewing them as a colection. I feel that all of my pieces work well together and will appeal strongly to the young, female target audience that I had chose. I am very happy with the outcome of this project especially seeing it was the first one.

The second brief that I tackled was the Leeds College of Art Creative Networks and Leeds Brewery Brief. Again, this was a different style of briefing, even though we did have a written brief, I feel that most of the more important information we received was given verbally, that meant written notes was a must. I challenged myself to complete it within one day which I succeeded in. The name of the beer that was being used was ‘Hellfire’ which is what I used to focus my design choices when it came to colour and imagery. I aimed to

create a simplistic label that would stand out on a shelf or behind a bar without being too detailed and fussy. This is why I decided on a bold pattern on a red palette that contrasted with the crisp white type. I feel my strengths during this was that I completed it in a very short time scale, proving to myself that I should do it more often to get a greater amount completed. Although I feel that I could have developed a more unique design to improve the selling quality and have a stand out apperance that would stick in the audiences mind.

I feel that across all the briefs that I have done for this module the D&AD Batiste brief has probably been my favourite. The two previous projects were based on pattern and print which I think helped me a lot during this one. Not only did I have more experience in pattern design but also with coping with outside briefs and submissions and I think by this stage I was a lot more confident in these areas which helped me progress a lot faster through the process. I think the strongest aspect of this project was my mock ups as I feel they look very realistic and professional. I worked hard to ensure this as I thought it would be important when it came to presenting my work for judging as it would allow the audience to see my idea as clearly as possible. I feel I could have improved the web aspect of this project as I ran out of time to take it further. Therefore time management could have been better.

One of the main aspects of this brief that was highlighted was the need for the designs to be current and reflect fashion trends that are popular at the moment. So I started by looking on trend websites for fashion, print and colour, I also looked through magazines and took samples. The trend that appeared often and appealed to me the most was geometric patterns and prints. I felt they would be interesting to create and would also be very bold and eyecatching to attract the target audience. I started by creating the initial patterns and then manipulated them using composition and colour so that they related to the scents I had chosen. I kept the layout of the bottle very similar to the originals as I wanted them to retain the ‘Batiste look’, so that they could fit into the brand image. I am really happy with the look of all of the bottles and I feel that the patterns really enhance the feel of the scent so the audience can get a clear feel of each. I kept the promotional posters simple as I wanted the bottles to be the focus and remain clear to the viewers. One thing that I could have done further is to create a product range that would help to promote the new scents. For example, vanity bags, hair accessories and other scented products. I feel that this could have helped to create a bigger buzz for the new scents launch.

The challenge for this brief was to re-brand the perfume house L’Artisan Parfumeur and take its packaging into the modern day and create a revolutionary new look. Another aspect that had to be considered was that the fragrances had to be unisex, this proved to be more difficult than we first anticipated. Although after some deliberation it was decided that the best way to appeal to both genders was to incorporate abstract patterns. To research into the emotions that the scents would

This chocolate brief was from the website Design Crowd, where companies can post briefs that they would like to be completed. I chose this particular brief because most on this site are very specific and have very strange requirements of what they want, whereas this one seemed less constrained. A theme stated that the clients liked was ‘japanese’, so I researched into japanese pattern which inspired my final design where the set type could be applied onto. I think a strength of this brief was again the mock ups which allowed my concept to be clear and put the designs in their best light. I think I could of done better in developing my initial idea and pushing my initial design. I was going to take on another project from this website, but after looking through the other briefs and taken into account the confusing submission I decided against it.

I have found this to be my favourite module I have completed during this course as it has been hugely beneficial to the progress of my design practice. I have really enjoyed being able to choose my own briefs that I felt suited my interests or incorporated aspects that I wanted to improve to challenge myself. One skill that I hadn’t explored before this module was pattern and during this process it has been a part of every brief, which has demonstrated to me an area of interest that I hadn’t considered before. I feel the competition aspect also encouraged me to push my designs a lot further than maybe I would have done because of the drive to do well or win. My favourite brief has been Batiste as I was really happy with the end results and was one of the first times that I could imagine a piece of my design working successfully in the public domain. I really enjoyed creating the initial shapes and developing them into pattern, linking with scents and applying to the product. I was also really happy with my mock-ups as I feel they have a really professional look and help to sell the designs. I feel a strength through this module has been managing my own time. A lot of juggling was needed, not only to complete all the briefs in 503, but also to continue with the work in other modules. I feel I have been successful in this because of the deadlines I have met for submission. Another skill that has greatly improved is knowing how to present my work becuase of the large number of presentaton boards that I have created. I feel my boards are now very clear and aesthetically appealing for the viewer to look at. I can also now take much better photographs of my work which I have noticed improves presentation by a long way, I think I could improve on coming up with a greater number of concepts. I think because of the pressure of deadlines I quite often went with my first idea. Some projects got developed throughout the process but it could have been more time efficent to have done that stage nearer the beginning. Although, overall I am really happy with the work that I have produced during this time and am looking forward to continuing it into level 6.
