We are one of only a few companies that provide turn-key manufacturing and installation services on all commercial playgrounds. AGE APPROPRIATE PLAY

Child development experts and parents agree play is an essential part of childhood. Outdoor play areas can help children develop physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. However children of different ages have dramatically different needs for developmentally appropriate play experiences. Having separate play areas marked by signage indicating each age-appropriate area is strongly recommended by industry standards. Guidelines have been created by organizations such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS) to help make America’s play areas developmentally appropriate, more enjoyable, and safer for all children.

AGES: 6-23 MONTHS

Play areas for children 6 to 23 months should offer places where children can have space to move and explore. Children of this age group are largely influenced by sensory development. They will explore their environment with their eyes, hands, feet, torsos and mouths. They are predominantly at ground or floor level during this stage and will need space to explore their area away from older peers. Appropriate play areas for this group should provide places to crawl, sit-up, pull-up, stand, and walk. Some examples of age appropriate equipment for a 6 to 23 month old child are:

AGES: 2-5 YEARS

Preschool aged children are new to the playground and will require an area of their own that is physically challenging but sized appropriately. Play areas for children ages 2-5 should offer challenges such as climbing over and under play elements. Their play area should have play activities that promote socialization and fine motor skills. Play areas for children ages 2 - 5 could include areas to crawl; low platforms with multiple access such as ramps and ladders; ramps with pieces attached for grasping; low tables for sand, water and manipulation of materials; tricycle paths with various textures; flexible spring rockers; sand areas with covers; and shorter slides. As dramatic play and imitation of older children begins at this stage, an area with adult supervision is extremely important for safe play. Some examples of age appropriate equipment for a 2 to 5 year old child are:

• Activity panels that promote fine motor skills

• Horizontal ladders less than or equal to 60” high for ages 4 and 5 only

AGES: 5-12 YEARS

School-age children range from 5-12 years old, and at this stage they are rapidly learning and building their skills. Developmentally they are moving towards more complex play and seek increased levels of physical challenges to remain occupied. They are constantly refining their fine and gross motor skills, coordination, balance and strength. They will also now have highly developed socialization skills and in turn they start to find creative ways to incorporate play elements into activities such as competitions, or elaborate imaginative games. Developmentally appropriate play areas could include: rope or chain climbers on angles; climbing pieces; cooperative pieces such as tire swings, slides and sliding poles; and open spaces to run and play ball. Their space should provide both physical and mental challenges to keep the older children occupied, engaged and out of trouble. Some examples of age appropriate equipment for a 5 to 12 year old child are:

Research shows that outdoor free play gives kids many valuable benefits, including the development of physical, emotional, social, and cognitive skills.

EMOTIONAL

Outdoor play encourages children to develop positive emotional skills that build self-confidence and self-esteem, such as risk analysis, conflict resolution, and imaginative dramatic play. During free play, kids can use imaginative or pretend play to experience different feelings or outcomes.

PHYSICAL

The physical benefits of play influence a child’s ability to learn reflexes and movement control, develop fine and gross motor skills, and increase flexibility and balance. Play is an integral part of children’s learning to crawl, walk, run, and jump. Each of these activities leads to improved physical health and fitness.

COGNITIVE

Play helps children develop language and reasoning skills and encourages critical thinking and problem-solving. It also helps their ability to focus and control their behavior. Experts from neuroscientists to child development researchers agree that play is essential for brain development.

CREATIVE

Allowing children to participate in childdirected play encourages creativity. Here, they’re able to role-play, create, and participate in dramatic plays, where they can experiment and understand social roles. Play helps develop each child’s unique style of creative expression.

SOCIAL

Outdoor play areas may be some children’s first social experiences. Social skills development plays an essential role in a child’s maturation process. The valuable lessons they learn on the playground will provide a foundation for socially adjusted, well-adapted adults.

LANGUAGE

Communication is an integral part of our lives. Through play, children learn language comprehension, productive expression, and nonverbal cues. Understanding and using language is an important first step in literacy and is the foundation for learning other subjects. ENGINEERED WOOD FIBER

Engineered Wood Fiber is the most popular and economical choice for playground surfacing, and it is used in almost 75% of surfacing installations. Its popularity stems from its low initial cost, natural look, and high shock attenuation properties. Also known as Kiddie Cushion, this ADA-compliant surfacing material is made from natural wood fibers and engineered specifically for the needs and safety specifications of the playground industry. However, maintenance is critical to keeping engineered wood fiber ADAcompliant. It requires ongoing raking and an occasional top-off during its lifetime due to compaction and natural decomposition.

EPDM Poured in Place Rubber is a popular safety surfacing material with several advantages over traditional surfacing systems such as mulch. The process consists of two layers, and it must start over a secure concrete base. This is then topped with a low-density rubber base as a cushioning impact layer. The rubberized surface can fit almost any area and forms one primarily continuous layer without seams or edges. This process is why EPDM is the best surface option for accessibility and ADA-compliant playgrounds. Pour-in-place rubber is one of the most expensive surfacing options available, but lower maintenance requirements for the product’s life usually offset this cost. Adventure Warranty

Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. warrants its products to be free from defect in materials or workmanship, subject to normal use and installation, for a period of 1 year from the date of delivery.

Within 1 year from date of delivery, Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. will repair or replace defective components free of charge. If merchandise was installed by Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. or an authorized agent, such repairs or replacements shall be performed free of charge.

If the merchandise was installed by the purchaser, the defective components must be returned to Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. or a service will be charged to cover labor. All warranties are void on equipment that has been vandalized or where the defects are the result of installation, modification or maintenance not controlled by Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. or an authorized agent.

This warranty does not cover cosmetic items such as scratches, dents, discolorations, weathering, normal wear and tear, or damage due to vandalism.

In the interest of playground safety, the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) provides a Third Party Certification Service whereby a designated independent laboratory, TÜV SÜD America Inc., (TÜV), validates an equipment manufacturer’s certification of conformance to ASTM F1487, Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use, except sections 7.1.1, 10, 12.6.1, 13.2, and 13.3; to CAN/ CSA Z614, Children’s Playspaces and Equipment, except clauses 9.8, 10 & 11; or both. The use of the corresponding logo in Adventure Playground System’s catalog signifies that Adventure has received written validation from the independent laboratory that the product(s) associated with the logo conforms to the requirements of the indicated standard. AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS

ASTM is an independent developer of technical standards utilized in testing a wide range of products. ASTM developed F1487-17 which covers consumer safety performance specifications and provides safety and performance standards for various types of public playground equipment. U.S. CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has created guidelines for public and home playground equipment. The CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook presents safety information for public playground equipment in the form of guidelines. The guidelines were first published in 1981, with revisions in 1991, 1994, 1997, 2008, and 2010. All of our products meet or exceed the safety standards set forth by this organization.
