AGE APPROPRIATE PLAY

Child development experts and parents agree, play is an essential part of childhood. Outdoor play areas can help children develop physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. However, children of different ages have dramatically different needs for developmentally appropriate play experiences. Having separate play areas marked by signage indicating each age appropriate area is strongly recommended by industry standards. Guidelines have been created by organizations such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS) to help make America’s play areas developmentally appropriate, more enjoyable, and safer for all children.

AGES: 6-23 MONTHS

Play areas for children 6 months through 23 months should offer places where children can have space to move and explore. Children of this age group are largely influenced by sensory development. They will explore their environment with their eyes, hands, feet, torsos and mouths. They are predominantly at ground or floor level during this stage and will need space to explore their area away from older peers. Appropriate play areas for this group should provide places to crawl, sit-up, pull up, stand, and walk.

AGES: 2-5 YEARS

This group is also referred to as preschool aged children. They are new to the playground and will require an area of their own that is physically challenging but sized appropriately. Play areas for children ages 2 to 5 should offer challenges such as climbing over and under play elements. Their play area should have play activities that promote socialization and fine motor skills. Appropriate play areas for children ages 2 to 5 could include: areas to crawl; low platforms with multiple access such as ramps and ladders; ramps with pieces attached for grasping; low tables for sand, water and manipulation of materials; tricycle paths with various textures; flexible spring riders; sand areas with covers; and shorter slides. As dramatic play and imitation of older children begins at this stage, an area with adult supervision is extremely important for safe play.

AGES: 5-12 YEARS

School-age children range from 5 to 12 years old and at this stage they are rapidly learning and building their skills. Developmentally they are moving towards more complex play and seek increased levels of physical challenges to remain occupied. They are constantly refining their fine and gross motor skills, coordination, balance and strength. Schoolaged children will now have highly developed socialization skills and in turn they start to find creative ways to incorporate play elements into activities such as competitions, or imaginative and elaborate games. Developmentally appropriate play areas for school-age children could include: rope or chain climbers on angles; climbing pieces; horizontal bars; cooperative pieces such as tire swings, slides and sliding poles; and open spaces to run and play ball. Their space should provide both physical and mental challenges to keep the older children occupied, engaged and out of trouble.

EMOTIONAL Development

APS Series

The Adventure Playground Series (APS) are our flagship designs that have been engineered specifically for larger, high volume outdoor play areas. These systems are manufactured with heavy duty components and using the highest quality materials to ensure durability. APS Systems use 5” galvanized upright posts and our 4’ x 4’ vinyl coated perforated steel decking. They also utilize our Collar Lock AntiSlip Hidden bolt through tab connection system that allows for a safe seamless design.

The Enterprise Playground Series (EPS) is our most popular design series to date. EPS Systems are value engineered to be budget friendly modularly attractive structures with outstanding play value. They offer a slightly smaller footprint alternative to our larger APS design series. The main differences between the two lines can be found in the decks and post diameter size. EPS Systems are 3.5” galvanized upright posts and our 3’ x 3’ vinyl coated perforated steel decking. The Crawl & Toddle combines creative and fun elements of development for children 6 to 23 months old. It is available with Comfy Tuff or Coated Steel Decks and features a cruise rail, bubble panel, visual wheel, spinning shapes and three climbing activities. This exciting structure can accommodate up to 8 children and is perfect for the littlest of adventurers.

CRUISE-A-LONG

The Cruise-A-Long carries the same great benefits as the Crawl & Toddle, but with two climbing access points instead of three. Perfect for children 6 to 23 months and slightly smaller spaces, it will accommodate up to 6 children. The Cruise-A-Long is available with Comfy Tuff Platforms or Coated Steel Decks.

LEARN-A-LOT PLAYSTATION

The Learn-a-Lot Play Station is perfect for indoor or outdoor use, and provides a varietal addition to any play space. Learn-aLot is designed for children 6 to 23 months old and is available in a 2 or 4 panel option. It can also be configured in a square or zig zag layout, depending on your preference.

GAME CENTRAL STATION

Game Central Station is an exciting addition for any playground. With 5 interactive panels to choose from, your littlest adventurers will have plenty of developmental learning activities to entertain them. This unit features a steering panel, tic-tac-toe panel, shapes and motion learning panel, mathmatical racing panel and a bench/table station.

The Big Outdoors allows young tots to recognize familiar objects from their own backyards while promoting dramatic play as well as fine and gross motor skills. With recycled deck slats for flooring, The Big Outdoors provides a unique venue for exploring.

The ramped entryway of the structure features handrails so children can enjoy an easy transition to the first deck. TOT TOWN

The Tot Town is a traditional post and deck structure that meets all standards for both 2-5 year and 6-23 month age groups. It’s whimsical roof provides shade, which ASTM recommends for play spaces for children 6-23 months. Engineered Wood Fiber is the most popular and economical choice for playground surfacing and it is used in almost 75% of surfacing installations. Its popularity stems from it’s low initial cost, natural look and high shock attenuation properties. Also known as Kiddie Cushion this ADA compliant surfacing material is made from natural wood fibers that are engineered specifically for the needs and safety specifications of the playground industry. However maintenance is critical to keeping engineered wood fiber ADA compliant, it requires ongoing raking and an occasional top off during its lifetime due to compaction and natural decomposition.

LOOSE FILL RUBBER MULCH

Also known as Kiddie Nuggets this loose filled shredded rubber material is made of clean recycled rubber tires. It is ADA compliant and offers the best impact absorbing properties of all loose fill surfaces. However maintenance is critical to keeping this loose fill surfacing option ADA compliant. In the long run Recycled Rubber Mulch can be more economical than Engineered Wood Fiber as it drains well, does not decompose or blow away. This non porous material is also animal, insect, and fungus resistant. All of these factors contribute to saving money and maintenance over time.

EPDM POUR IN PLACE RUBBER

EPDM Poured in Place Rubber is a popular safety surfacing material that has several advantages over traditional surfacing systems such as mulch. EPDM offers a wide range of design capabilities as it comes in a large variety of color options that can be used to create artistic patterns, creative designs, and themed graphics. Consisting of two layers, the process must start over a secure concrete base. This is then topped with a low density rubber base that acts as a cushioning impact layer. Lastly the EPDM colored granules are mixed with a polyurethane binder and then the design is poured into place on site. The rubberized surface can fit almost any area and forms one primarily continuous layer without seams or edges. This process is why EPDM is the best surface option for accessibility and ADA compliant playgrounds. Pour in Place Rubber is one of the most expensive surfacing options available but this cost is usually offset by lower maintenance requirements over the life of the product. With proper maintenance it can provide years of fun, safe, accessible play opportunities for your kids.

ADVENTURE WARRANTY

Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. warrants its products to be free from defect in materials or workmanship, subject to normal use and installation, for a period of 1 year from the date of delivery.

Within 1 year from date of delivery, Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. will repair or replace defective components free of charge. If merchandise was installed by Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. or an authorized agent, such repairs or replacements shall be performed free of charge.

If the merchandise was installed by the purchaser, the defective components must be returned to Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. or a service will be charged to cover labor.

All warranties are void on equipment that has been vandalized or where the defects are the result of installation, modification or maintenance not controlled by Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. or an authorized agent.

This warranty does not cover cosmetic items such as scratches, dents, discolorations, weathering, normal wear and tear, or damage due to vandalism.

Adventure Playground Systems, Inc. reserves the right to make changes in designs, materials and price without prior notice. Previous purchasers shall have no recourse to such changes.

• 5 Year limited warranty for the first 5 years on all shade fabrics.

• 10 Year prorated warranty for years 5-10 on all shade fabrics.

• 10 Year limited warranty on all metal shelters.

• 15 Year limited warranty on steel frame, posts, clamps, and hardware.

WARRANTY ON PLAYGROUND PRODUCTS

• 15 Year limited warranty on steel posts, clamps, and hardware.

• 15 Year limited warranty on steel components including pipes, rungs, rails, loops, climbers and overhead ladders.

• 15 Year limited warranty on perforated steel decks

• 10 Year limited warranty on rotationally molded plastic components including rotomolded roofs, slides, and climbers.

• 10 Year limited warranty on HDPE plastic sheet components including all HDPE panels and climbers.

• 5 Year limited warranty on all Freenotes musical items.

• 3 Year limited warranty on all electronic music panels.

• 2 Year limited warranty on movable/motion plastic and metal components including independent events.

• 1 Year limited warranty on spring riders.

• 7 Year limited warranty on all site amenities (excluding dog park items) against structural failure due to defects in materials or workmanship.

• 5 Year limited warranty on specialty dog park site amenities and play events.

• 5 Year limited warranty on outdoor fitness equipment.

• 5 Year limited warranty on athletic equipment.

WARRANTY ON SURFACING PRODUCTS

• 15 Year limited warranty on synthetic grass.

• 8 Year limited warranty on polygreen foam pads.

• 3 Year prorated warranty on EPDM surfacing material.

• 3 Year limited warranty on polysoft surfacing material over concrete.

• 2 Year limited warranty on polysoft surfacing material under water.

• 2 Year limited warranty on rubber tiles/ rubber mulch.

INTERNATIONAL PLAY EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION

In the interest of playground safety, the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) provides a Third Party Certification Service whereby a designated independent laboratory, TÜV SÜD America Inc., (TÜV), validates an equipment manufacturer’s certification of conformance to ASTM F1487, Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use, except sections 7.1.1, 10, 12.6.1, 13.2, and 13.3; to CAN/CSA Z614, Children’s Playspaces and Equipment, except clauses 9.8, 10 & 11; or both. The use of the corresponding logo in Adventure Playground System’s catalog signifies that Adventure has received written validation from the independent laboratory that the product(s) associated with the use of the logo conforms to the requirements of the indicated standard. CERTIFICATIONS & AFFILIATIONS

AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS

ASTM is an independent developer of technical standards utilized in testing a wide range of products. ASTM developed F1487-17 which covers consumer safety performance specifications and provides safety and performance standards for various types of public playground equipment. All of our products meet or exceed the safety standards set forth by this organization.

U.S. CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has created guidelines for both public playground and home playground equipment. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook presents safety information for public playground equipment in the form of guidelines. The guidelines were first published in 1981 with revisions in 1991, 1994, 1997, 2008, and 2010. All of our products meet or exceed the safety standards set forth by this organization.
