[6043 Nashua ave, Orlando,FL] [32809] [Jennie.m.rivera@gmail.com] [407-716-3217] Journalism plays a big part of my life. My whole life has been set on pursuing something that is going to make me a better person. Something that is going to make me happy and Journalism does just that. I have always had a strong hand for graphic designing but I began expressing it my freshman year while working on a project about Nelson Mandela. I spent weeks on my power point. While I was editing my project I was noticed for my skill in graphic design by one of my close friends. She was also the Copy Editor of the Oak Ridge High School Pathfinder Yearbook. She spoke to me about my skill in design and how it could help them in the yearbook. She told me I was very talented and just to think about joining the staff. I decided to sign up and was recruited my Sophomore year. My first year on the yearbook staff was amazing. I met so many people who relate so much to what I am trying to pursue with my career. My skill on Graphic Design became more advanced and I grew a huge admiration for Photography. I won 7 awards for my pictures my Sophomore year and was promoted to the Photography Editor my Junior year. Being the Photo Editor was definitely a big step for me. I had to face plenty of hardships like making sure my staff was on task and maintaining my own work while still teaching students who weren’t on track. I Also need to give information well enough so everyone comprehends, and Maintaining positive behavior with my staff to show them that even when things get hard we can still have fun and enjoy journalism. I have contributed in journalism in many ways, such as my time and effort because Journalism is my favorite class, I use a lot of my after school time and free time to work on it. I enjoy getting new people to join because it shows that I am doing my job correctly. People see me as someone always happy, friendly and with a camera and thats what kind of person I tend to grow old to be. Photography and Graphics are my strongest skills but I also contribute in writing as well, Checking Spread Stories, Grammar, etc. I want to continue to advance my skills and grow to show people how amazing and important photography is and continuing my dream of being a photojournalist.

I have learned many things my 3 years in Journalism 1-4, such as dedication, communication, teamwork, advertising, deadlines and more. But I will explain how these things helped me learn in Journalism. “Dedication- the quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose.” Everyone in journalism enters the room with dedication, we learn how to express it in Journalism. that’s why it was marked as first in what I have learned. Journalism is a very fun and productive class but without dedication we would not be the amazing class or family that we are. Journalism takes a lot of dedication because things get very stressful and people will start to break down. People who give up easily can not be found for more than a week in journalism. Dedication is basically mandatory. Dedication is something you must walk through the door of Journalism with, you may not express at first but if journalism is something you love or something that means a lot to you, you will soon find yourself having dedication. “Communication- the successful conveying or sharing of ideas and feelings.” Journalism can not stand on its two feet without the help of communication. Communication is the source to every spread, story, photo, etc. Communication gives what you create the emotion people feel when seeing your design. Inside the Journalism room people are very independent. If one student is lost and does not know what to do. He uses communication to get his peers to give him the information he needs. “Advertising- the activity or profession of producing advertisements for commercial products or services.” Advertising is also another big part of what we do in Journalism. Advertising gives us the skill of communicating with others and the responsibility of managing money. “Teamwork- the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient.” Teamwork plays another big role in our class. We learn together and work together so that our creations are perfect. Teamwork helps us get our work done quicker and easier.

What is your purpose? My purpose of this piece was to make a poll that was organized, different but still nice to look at. Something that give just enough information and gives you an easier way of understanding the topic. Was this piece difficult or easy to create? This piece was not so much difficult to create but it took a lot of thinking and organization to put everything in place to create a clean, professional look. How did your work evolve from first piece to published piece? First, I was thinking of going off from my inspiration. I wanted it to look almost the same but after a while of moving things around I set off with a new mentality of creating something that would fit the topic I was trying to get across. It ended up becoming exactly what I wanted and the switch up gave the piece its own originality.

Why do you think this piece needs more help? This picture was taken my sophomore year during one of the first swimming matches. While editing the picture I realized it was very blue because I did not white balance while being in a dierent setting and that caused the overcoloring of blue that could not be completely fixed when color balancing. What couldve made this picture better? I feel like this picture couldve used more work by white balancing my camera twice to make sure the color was correct because after shooting this picture and seeing it blue, I knew I couldnt fix it and that I just missed an amazing chance to catch this photo.

RIVERA I am proud of these 3 pictures because just by looking at these pictures you feel a lot of emotion. It puts you in a place where it feels like you are actually there as it is happening and the angles are very sharp and that’s how I want my pictures feelings to present themselves through their colors, settings and emotion.
Photo One You feel the heat and pressure on the young boys face because of the lighting beaming off of his face, along with the sweat or water dripping off his chin and his mouth. His mouth was have open which helps picture the boy heavy breathing or focused on something very important.
Photo Two In this picture you take a gasp of air looking at the exhausted boy exiting the water has he opens his mouth his mouth wide to breathe. You can feel a cold breeze by looking at the icey blue color of the water behind him and highlighting his skin and also dripping off him as he hits the cold air coming out of the water.
Photo Three Looking at this picture you feel the vibe of competitiveness in the young girl in the front. You can see she is using full strength by the way she tugs the rope with her mouth clentched and her fist balled up. You can also see the second girl gives off more rapture with her big smile.

What are some of your hardships that went on throughtout the year?
Some hardships I faced were keeping my sta on task. Some students would get stressed and slack by talking and distracting others from their work. I also faced people who try to achieve something, fail once and gave up. I had to tie all of my team members together to show them that we can get through the year and be able to practice new things that can help us in our future careers and years ahead of us in Journalism and even help people find their careers. I faced work loads on deadlines and managed to stay patient and get it done with the other editors. We faced people who pick fights and stop working but we pushed them to continue working till the end of the deadline by using full determination. I faced hardships within myself such as motivation to go to class, and controling myself from being easily distracted. I also had some hardships in design where I couldve done better in some of my projects.

RIVERA What were some of your weaknesses that were pointed out to you and how did you improve throughout the year? Be specific.
I had problems with going to all of my classes. I would focus more on classes that I struggled in and leave the classes that I was okay in behind but I realized that I was not getting most of the information that i needed for tests and finals in those classes. I always mantained a good grade in all of my classes but I was not getting the information to actually understand the subject of those classes. That was a big problem not only in Journalism but overall in my academics. I was losing motivation and I was slowly giving up on school, my work, and attendance. It started showing to my teachers and my peers. My teachers would try to push me to come their classes and my friends would start asking about my grades and how I was doing in other classes. Thats when I realized I was too close to finishing to fail and give up. I began going to all my classes and making time for each classes by dividing the time properly. I also have a problem with getting distracted very easily. I tend to move from one topic to another quickly and leave things unfinished for a while. I have lots of ideas and I can also be very unpatient which causes me to moves rapidly to dierent things continuiously. That goes for when I am designing a spread, drawing things, to even talking about ideas. Even though these problems have caused critical change in my life Throughout these 3 years I still managed to get through all of my assignments and classes and I have overcome those problems well enought by not missing classes and focusing more on what is going on in class. Also focusing more my projects and my sta members so I can be able to help others with Journalism.

Starting in Journalism my sophomore year I feel I have overcome a lot of things and have grown in spots that I would have never thought I would be able to grow in. I was very use to creating clip art to make a piece come alive but now I can create anything using abstracts such as shapes and patterns and colors and I feel like I have grown very far from where I started. I learned ways to make a spread blend. I also picked up new skills like Photoshop, Indesign Cs6, and Google Chrome Docs + Drive. I also learned many skills that have made a huge impact of my life like better communication skill, Advertising skills and Leadership Skills. Being the Photo Editor caused me to have to grow and help others learn the skills that I learned from my previous years. I managed to help kids older and younger than myself understand the ways of Journalism. Ive grown in my photography by learning how to use and hold a camera properly. I learned the basics of white balancing, Color Balancing, formating and Resizing a photo. I have grown so much as a person by learning to handle situations more professionally. Also learning to maintain a postive attitude.
