INDUSTRY NEWS Each month we want to keep you up to date with what is going on in the technology and creative industries. We will give the most important updates to keep you informed.

T

he proposed merger of Penguin and Random House publishers has been giving the go ahead by the European Commissioner. The merger means that the business will become the world’s largest book publisher. However it will still face strong competitors from the world’s other largest publishing groups, which are Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster. Random House’s German parent firm, Bertelsmann, will own 53% of the new venture, with Pearson, Penguin’s owner, controlling the remaining 47%. The merger was announced last October and US competition authorities had already cleared the deal in February. The merger is expected to be completed in the second half of this year, and the business will simply be called Penguin Random House.

M

otion-control company, Leap Motion, has announced a deal to embed its technology within HP computers. The controller is able accurately to detect the movement of 10 fingers at once, allowing for intricate gesture-based controls. Initially, the product will be aimed at consumers as a gaming and entertainment

device. But the firm’s president Andy Miller said partnerships with car and medical industries would be announced soon. The product is similar in function to the popular Microsoft Kinect gaming peripheral, but is designed to be used at much closer range, and can detect more intricate movements.

T

he official chart company will continue to be played on Radio 1 after it signed a four-year deal with the BBC. The new contract will run out in 2016. Radio 1 has hosted the Official Charts on Sundays since 1967.

H

ilco, a specialist-restructuring firm, in a £50 million deal, has saved HMV, BRITAIN’s last remaining music retailer. The deal has seen 2500 jobs and 141 stores remain open. In January this year it was announced that the chain went into administration. This caused a stir amongst fans of the store and businesses alike. It was feared that all the stores would be closed resulting in thousands of jobs being made redundant. However in a massive turn around, the store has been saved.

T

he creative industries have been given a further £25 million to help contribute to economic growth it has been announced. The industry will receive a further £5 million a year to support skills development in the country. A further £15m has been committed to the design and launch of a new competition, led by the Technology Strategy Board. This will invite consortia bids to support digital content production through partnerships with industry, including specialist SMEs, educational research facilities and training providers.

omen in business, it’s a controversial subject. It’s usually the men you see powering around in their 3 piece suits. To see women in such a dominating positions can frighten some men. They say it makes

recognition as men. What is it going to take and will we ever see equality in the work place? The fight for equality has gone on for many years. Women’s rights were becoming increasingly prominent in the 1850’s as some women in higher social spheres refused to obey

‘Women just have to accept that men will always be the more powerful sex’ them feel less masculine. But it’s time they got used to it. Us women are here to stay; we are strong, ambitious and have every right to fight for the career and salary we deserve. There is still an on-going debate on the subject of pay and recognition. Why is it that women don’t get the same treatment as their male counterpart? Surely it should not matter what gender you are but how you perform on the job? In this era surely we should be over the barrier that keeps women from getting the same

the strict gender roles dedicated to them. Feminists fought for the right to sue their ex-husbands after divorce and the right for married women to own property. Eventually these rights were achieved in the late 1800’s. The women’s suffrage began around this time but protests were halted due the outbreak of world war one. However this didn’t stop these angry women from lobbying around in public places fighting for the right to vote. Women wanted the right

Why is it that fre m g t e h d t e h o women don’t get the same recognition as men? a m h t o u o p c p f e Don’t mistake this article for something that iviliz ation men but not onl on suggests women don’t get high-end careers; y o of th o it’s simply questioning why there is such a big e wo f the onw f rld gap in pay and recognition. In 2012 it looked ar Anth ony ’ – Mary d like women really were making a mark on the world S. completely within major companies like Yahoo! Marissa Mayer, IBM’s Ginni Rometty and Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg. However, if you take a look at the figures, the numbers tell a different story. Females held only 14.3 percent of executive officer positions at Fortune 500 companies in 2012, a smidge more than in 2011, according to 2012 Catalyst Census, a report from nonprofit Catalyst, which promotes women in business. Women at these companies also only held less than 1 in 5 board of director positions, at 16.6 percent—reflecting only half a percentage point of growth over 2011. And more than one-quarter of Fortune 500 companies had no women executive officers. To add to insult, these women who run successful companies face hate mail from chairmen. It gets so bad that they wonder why they are doing it and want to quit.

We did some research and asked both men and women their views on the subject of equality in the workplace. There was a mix of opinions amongst the group and surprisingly some men think that women do need to fight because they work hard and deserve to be treated the same as if they were male. Tom from HarperCollins said ‘I work in an office where the male to female radio is probably 1:3; I see how hard my fellow colleagues work and some of the best editors here are female. I do think it is unfair to expect the women to work the same as us men but get less pay and recognition. There needs to be a change in the workplace but sadly it seems that it may never happen’ However David from Mercury Records has a very different, strong view on the subject. He says ‘Women just have to accept that men will always be the more powerful sex, we just look more dominating and frankly can achieve better deals in the work place. I don’t think there will ever be equality. Sorry.’ We have two

13 SOGNO DONE!!!!- JENNIFER CAMPBELL FMP newest.indd 14-15

different views on the subject from men. It shows that not all men think the same but unfortunately t h e r e are many men like David out there who feel that women don’t deserve the recognition. It’s time that the workplace has a shake-up, times are changing. The average age of the workforce is rising steadily and women now make up nearly half of the workforce in the UK, double the numbers of 25 years ago. So almost half of the working population is female, why are we still in this situation? It’s a tough time for everyone in the economic state that we are in as a country so how can we help change the issue when times are so bad? Some companies and organisations are trying to bring equality into their workplaces. CBS San Francisco have announced The Gender Equality Challenge by their Department on the Status of Women which encourages businesses to seek best practices to engender fairness for both men and women in the workplace. The best practices, which advance principles such as equal pay for women and employees’ work-life balance, will then be showcased in a January 2014 forum. Pam, an executive at Coca Cola tells us ‘I have a great position within the company, I work hard to achieve targets set by my bosses. I’m female and in a great position in my career. Being an executive has its good points but at the same time there are some bad points to what I do. Mostly these are the attitudes I get from some of my male colleagues. It seems that although I get support from many colleagues of both sexes, I still feel there is a stigma attached because I am a female executive. It’s almost like they fell less of a man because a woman is above them on the career chain. With the introduction to The Gender Equality Challenge in San Francisco, perhaps we may start to see a change in the

workplace over the coming years. If 2012 was a year of chatter but little movement, 2013 is shaping up to offer some glimmers of hope, if only because women's place in the workplace, and especially in business, has become the topic of such widespread attention. With women in business and technology like Marissa Mayer’s controversial ban of working from home making headlines, perhaps we are going to see the rise of women in power hitting the headlights and shining in the media more often. As women we should learn from the women who fought for us. If it wasn’t for the Women Suffrage fighting and some dying for our right to vote we may not be in the positions we’re in just now. We should take a page from their book and fight for equality. We work hard just like our male colleagues so why can’t we just be treated the same.

S

heryl Sandberg recently released a book ‘Lean In’ in which she discusses why some women don’t make it to the top in their companies and how they can achieve it. In the book there are discussions on the gender gap to chauvinism and corporate obstacles but also women who don’t aggressively pursue opportunities. She writes ‘We hold ourselves back in ways both big and small, by lacking self-confidence, by not raising our hands, and by pulling back when we should be leaning in. We internalize the negative messages we get throughout our lives, the messages that say it’s wrong to be outspoken, aggressive, more powerful than men. We lower our own expectations of what we can achieve. We continue to do the majority of the housework and childcare. We compromise our career goals to make room for partners and children who may not even exist yet.’ A McKinsey survey published in April found that 36 percent of male e m ployees at major companies aspired to be top executives, compared with 18 percent of the women. A study of Carnegie Mellon M.B.A graduates in 2003 found that 57 percent of the men, but only 7 percent of the women, tried to negotiate a higher initial salary offer.

world, in interviews she acknowledges that she has harbored much insecurity, sometimes shedding tears at the office, as well as doubts about her juggling of work and family. When she joined Facebook as its No. 2, she was initially willing to accept the first offer from Mark Zuckerberg, the founder. She writes that her husband and brotherin-law hounded her to demand more, so she did — and got a better deal. “I am hoping that each woman will set her own goals and reach for them with gusto,” Sandberg writes. “And I am hoping that each man will do his part to support women in the workplace and in the home, also with gusto.” Is it a case that Sheryl is blaming women for not being assertive in their positions? I’m not sure that she is. She simply explores the idea why woman aren’t as forward as men and how they can achieve it. In today’s society, jobs seem aimed at fathers rather than mothers. With tight deadlines and long hours it can sometimes be impossible for the mother to keep up with all the duties live throws at her. But it can be done. Sheryl Sandberg famously leaves the office at 5:30 most days to be with her kids, but not many women (or men) would dare try that.

Sheryl Sandberg, is one of the most prominent women in corporate America and is not known as a shrinking violet. In her book she confesses that when she was in elementary school, she trained her younger brother and sister to follow her around, listen to her give speeches and periodically shout: “RIGHT!” Although she is one of the powerful women in the

Some people believe that women are more nurturing bosses, or that they offer more support to women below them but women can be bossy as much if not more as men. We need more women in leadership positions for another reason: evidence suggests that more diverse groups reach better decisions. Corporations should promote women not just out of fairness, but also because it helps them perform better and women deserve the same recognition. So, yes, like Sheryl Sandberg writes, let’s encourage young women to “lean in,” but let’s also change the workplace so that when they do lean in and assert themselves, we’re directly behind them shouting: “RIGHT”

he prospect of growing up and leaving student life behind to go out in the big bad world on your own can be a scary thought. There come lots of worries and a responsibility that you may feel uncertain of facing but the plus side is that you have a whole new world waiting for you and can literally do anything you wish. The first 5 years after university are the times you have to find who and where you want to be. You can make mistakes and learn from them. You have many routes you can choose from; you can take some time out to find yourself and go travelling. You may go job hunting or if you’re lucky you may already have a job waiting for you. Whichever you path

you decide on, you need to go out there and walk it confidently. We spoke to some recent graduates who have been out of university for about 5 years to see what experiences they have had after student life. Let’s say you want to take the career path, where do you start? Have you got a portfolio of work and an appealing CV? If not then this is your starting place, you need to make sure it is up-to-date and that it sells you as a person and employee. Depending on what industry you are going into, you need to be prepared and know what is expected of you. For the creative industries it is a good idea to have an imaginative approach that is creative and shows off your skills. For the technology industries you need a similar CV but concentrate on the design aspect showing you can use certain technology and so on.

12/05/2013 19:23

A good example of a well-thought CV, a man got an interview at Google and so he designed his like a search page of Google. This is exactly the kind of thing you want to aim for, get creative and make your CV stand out and be memorable. Prepare a good cover letter to send along side it, you don’t want to make a general one that you send to multiple companies. It has to be adjusted to fit with the job and company you are applying to. Mentioned before was a portfolio of work, this is appropriate when applying to more creative industries or any industry that requires it. For instance if you are applying for a job at a magazine it would be good to have a portfolio of written and art work that can show your skills for the job. Searching and applying for the job takes hard work and dedication. You need to be prepared to spend some

until you succeed. It’s a tough market out there at the moment with the economic state but if you are determined and ambitious this will show and someone will give you the job. We spoke to Helen from London who told us about how she got her career rolling by doing work experience and working for free before she was offered a fulltime position at a well-known PR company in London. ‘I graduated 3 years ago and it took some time for me to realise what my ideal career would be. I had work experience at a magazine, a modelling agency and a PR company before I decided exactly what it was I wanted to do. I did my final work placement at a PR company and it opened my eyes to see that this was the career for me. I have spent the past 6 months learning the ins and outs of the company and have been given a

‘My advice for anyone coming out of university is that you have to work hard and do it with a smile on your face’ of your days trolling the internet for job vacancies. A good idea is to make a wish list of companies you would like a job within then find out everything you need to know about the company, do your research and be prepared. Often large organisations take applications months in advance especially for work experience. You may need to prepare yourself to work for free for a little while, that is why it is essential you network and get placements whilst you are still a student. It is vital to know people and like they say ‘It’s not what you know but who you know that matters’. A tip is to remember the word ‘networking’ and apply it to your life daily and you will soon see your contact list grow. You need to show determination and be ambitious and you can be sure you will achieve. However, if you do opt for the career path, it’s important to be prepared for rejection and have the attitude that you will continue

19 SOGNO DONE!!!!- JENNIFER CAMPBELL FMP newest.indd 20-21

promotion. My advice for anyone coming out of university is that you have to work hard and do it with a smile on your face even if you hate what you are doing. Commitment and hard work does not go unnoticed and you will be thankful when the company gives you a shining recommendation that may just land you the career you want.’ A career path is an excellent choice after all you have studied for years to get the qualification in your chosen field of interest. Getting your foot in the door straight after university is a wise idea as you can get experience and really chase the career you want from day one. However, if you chose the other path of taking some time out to decide what you want from life then this is also a great choice. You can enhance your life and

really find out what you want from life and there are many options you can take. Whether that be a round the world trip, volunteering or simply just relaxing, it is a good idea to plan well and be prepared. It’s exciting to try something new and explore the world. Whilst this is good and you should always know how to keep safe and secure on your adventures. Always check that your source is from a reputable place and any agencies that require travel are backed up with ATOL and ABTA as well as ensuring that you have the correct insurance that will cover you in all cases. Most of all be safe and use your instincts to judge whether something is good or not, it is usually right. That aside, let’s get talking about all the exciting things you can do in a year out from the responsibilities life can bring.

Have you ever thought about experiencing a new culture first hand, learning the traditions and living like the citizens? If you like children and have some experience with them (babysitting a sibling is fine) then a good way of soaking up a culture is to Au Pair. You can do this all over the world and there are many agencies that work with families and are fully checked so you are sure you will be safe and have the time of your life. If America is the culture you’re interested in then Au Pair in America is a very experienced and trusted agency that have been helping young women have a year of a lifetime for over 25 years. The process is thorough and safe so you know that you are well looked after. You sign up online and begin payments (which are very little for what you get) then you are matched to families who meet your requirements. You then spend some time getting to know some families who contact you before making a decision on who you are going to live with for the year. During your time in America you are giving an orientation in New York before you fly to your family and begin a year of a lifetime. You take care of the family’s children and get pocket money of roughly $200 per week which is yours to do as you wish as the family take care of all your food and bills. Someone who knows all about spending time out is Emily from Sussex. She took a year out in 2008 to do Au Pair in America. It was an exciting time for her and a decision she has never looked back on. Emily began

‘I had the time of my life’

If you chose to travel then you have a whole world to explore. Perhaps you always wanted to go to America and do Route 66 or dip your feet in the Pacific Ocean or Indian Ocean whilst soaking up the sun in Australia. How about a ride on an elephant or being a wildlife care taker where your days are looking after kangaroos or swimming with dolphins? Sounds amazing right? Whatever you chose to do you can be sure that it will give you a whole new perspective on life. You will grow as a person and discover what you really want from life. There are many companies who can help you plan and organise your year out such as Bunac, Trek America and PGL.

20 12/05/2013 19:23

her journey on August 4th 2008; she boarded a plane to New York where she would spend 3 days on orientation before heading to Atlanta Georgia for her year of a lifetime. She got the chance to live with an American family and was treated like an older sister to the kids she looked after. She had her own apartment in the basement of a luxurious house in a picturesque neighbourhood and loved every minute of her time there. Emily told us ‘If someone is looking to gain independence and experience a new culture then this is the perfect way to do it. I had the time of my life there and would highly recommend anyone thinking of doing a similar thing to grab it with both hands.’ This is just one of a thousand options you can take on your year out. The world is your oyster and you can choose to explore it in your very own unique way. So if you are thinking of taking time out to travel you should investigate all of your options. The same applies to that of volunteering; there are many companies that deal with opportunities to volunteer either here in the UK or abroad. As will the career path, you also need to be prepared that things won’t always go to plan and sometimes situations may arise which may lead you in a different direction. You need to be wise and have

your wits about you especially if you are going half way across the world on your own and you don’t know the culture. Remember every country is different and although the UK and the USA have similarities, the cultures are very different and the way the Americans do things can be very different and you may find yourself in dangerous situations. So always do your research and do the best planning you can to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable adventure. This is an exciting time in your life, you are taking a large step from being a student to being a grown up. You should take it with both hands and go running into your chosen path. The road may be smooth but most likely you will run into potholes or come up against dead ends but do not give up. Life is a journey and we learn the most when times get tough and they make us stronger. It is good to have ambition and that drive to succeed; it’s what is going to make you great. Plan, prepare and do your research. You will achieve great things if you do this. Graduation is just the beginning of a long road to achieving the life goals you want and if you let it, it will be a fantastic adventure.

THE POWER OF A MELODY JOIN US FOR THE NEXT TEN OR SO MINUTES AS SOGNO AND YOU, PRESENT THE ESSENTIAL SONGS TO GET YOU THROUGH LIVES MOST DIFFICULT TIMES.

M

usic always helps, no matter what you’re going through. Whether you’re going through a really bad break-up or just miss someone so much it hurts, there is always something out there that will get you through it. We as woman can sometimes be more emotionally attached to something and a lot of that is to do with our hormones. Therefore it is always a good thing when we find some kind of music that helps us through those particular moments in our life. A recent online survey proved this theory, where 80% of you who took part agreed that music got you through life events and even changed or saved some of your lives. The thing about music is that it doesn’t care what age you are or what background you come from, it will always be there to help and inspire if you let it. The other 20% were unsure that it had the power to save but believe it can change their mood instantly. There is something powerful within the melodies and lyrics in a song that can do something to your emotions. It is almost like we as humans cannot help but be moved by rhythm and beats of the music we listen to. Notice that even your feet cannot help but tap to the beat of just about every melodic moment. Look out for it; your feet will be dancing away without you even noticing. It is amazing how musicians and the music they create can tug on our heartstrings, everyone reacts differently and we all have that one song that may remind us of someone special or of a big change we went through in our lives.

‘I cannot tell you how many times in the 6 year period of severe depression I felt hopeless and that there was nothing to live for in this world. I thought about killing myself numerous times, sad to say. But the one thing that always stopped me from wanting to die was music. I knew that I'd always have it and that if I left this world I would not be able to listen to the beauty of it anymore and that is how music saved my life.’- Anonymous 23 SOGNO DONE!!!!- JENNIFER CAMPBELL FMP newest.indd 24-25

So, Why do we respond the way we do to music? Rachel Verney the Director of Music at Nordoff Robbins said “We are hardwired to respond to music. It can affect our feelings, make our bodies move, change the way we think and – when we make music with others – offer a way of communicating and connecting with people in a way that doesn’t rely on words, but which can be very powerful.” We can’t help it, as humans it is in our blood and as woman we can use this excuse to plug in our earphones when that certain someone may be annoying at you. This is why music is used just about everywhere, people know it can affect your attitude and mood making you feel inspired or uplifted. We hear music when we are doing our shopping, or when we go

‘The mu featu sic re liter ally d my l saved ife.’ out for a meal at our favourite restaurant. Even flicking on the TV you are guaranteed some sort of music through-out every show whether it’s the opening theme credits or songs during scenes, it is always present. It stirs emotions within our hearts so that we can empathise with the situation on screen. A show that has used music as a tool to connect with viewers is One Tree Hill. The successful series spans nine seasons and through-out the show it has had many musicians take part, making the show a success. Mark Schwahn the creator of the show has a close connection with music and the titles of the episodes are mostly from songs, bands or albums. Some of the bands that featured on the show included My Chemical Romance, Wakey Wakey, Angels and Airwaves and Fall Out Boy. One fan wrote “I was suicidal in 8th grade and just really depressed. Then I watched the school shooting episode of One Tree Hill. The music featured literally saved my life.” – Anonymous www.othforums.com Music is featured almost everywhere, we can even go as far as saying that we each have our individual soundtracks to our lives. And as each year passes and we go through a little more we add to it and even when you’re dead, those songs that once helped you are playing as you make your exit from this world. We all remember the songs we listened to from our first to our last loves, the songs we listened to during our school years and of course those songs that remind you of a loved one who may still be with us or not. Music is like a fingerprint, each of us is different and unique in our particular styles and what gets our hearts pounding with an array of emotions. One of the women who answered the question what does music do for you? From the survey said “It gives me a rush

24 12/05/2013 19:23

‘Music is like a fingerprint, each of us is different’

and can completely change my mood. It also gives me confidence in life”. Another of you said “Songs can hold strong memories, so even if the music seems to be in the background it makes a huge difference to the setting and mood of a situation or memory”. It is evident to see from the above comments that music is helpful to many people in a variety of situations. It doesn’t just stop with helping people through emotional times in life but music can also be used as therapy to those who are disadvantaged in life. The work of one charity in particular is phenomenal, Nordoff Robbins. They work as a music therapy based charity who works with a wide range of people from all ages, disabilities and illnesses. They particularly work with people who are very isolated or cannot communicate verbally. As with everyone music therapy needs to be adapted to suit each individual, there isn’t just a one trick wonder that will cure everyone instantly. The charity begins by working with the individual and making music with them until they recognise what they respond to then build from that. Often they help people who used to be able and very independent but due to a sudden and unfortunate life event have suffered from isolation. Speaking with the Director of Music she shared this story in confidence, so he is anonymous. One man in particular lost his receptive and expressive language abilities following a stroke. He felt isolated, cut off and extremely depressed. He began taking music therapy on his own then his wife started joining him in the sessions, there was something magical about what she was witnessing. It went from his wife taking care of him, to them becoming partners again through the power of music. Another organisation you may be familiar with is Samaritans, the work with people in confidence who are in extremely low places emotionally.

Just recently there was a CD release called ‘Songs to Save a Life’ in aid of Samaritans. It featured many artists including James Morrison, KT Tunstall, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and The Overtones who donated their time to a cause they feel strongly about and they each chose a song of significant meaning. KT Tunstall, multi-platinum singer and songwriter, on recording the album: “I’ve always had huge admiration for Samaritans; their existence is so vital to aid those in desperate need of someone to talk to. And music too can be a route out of places too dark to stay.” Catherine Johnstone, Samaritans Chief Executive, on the album itself: “All the profits from the album will fund our essential 24-hour helpline service to support anyone feeling suicidal or with nowhere else to turn. We’re extremely grateful to all the artists and to the Songs to Save a Life production team for helping to make it happen. By buying this album, you could help us to save lives.” The Songs to Save a Life album was named after the production company behind the project. Two music-industry experts, Richard Cardwell, musician/producer and musical director and Phil Armorgie, who has 20 years’ experience in the music industry, approached the Samaritans out of a desire to ‘put something back’ from an industry that had served them both well over the years and their mutual respect for such an incredible organisation. Every year, Samaritans receives 5 million calls for help – that’s one every 5 seconds and every 60 seconds, the charity answers a call from someone feeling suicidal. The Songs to Save a Life is an album that can help Samaritans help others. It just goes to show us, that no matter what situation we are in, whether it is a break up or a life altering event such as a stroke, music can do wonders for us. It can save us and bring us back to the life we love. By Jennifer Campbell

TWITTER free. Twitter was so pleased with the design of its iPad app, it influenced the company's relaunch of its main website. For good reason too: Twitter on iPad is quick and slick to use, and maybe even the best device for tweeting.

EBAY FOR IPAD free. Why use eBay on an iPad if you have a laptop or computer nearby? The online auction service has been redesigned with a focus on bigger images and a touchscreen interface, making it the perfect way to browse from the sofa.

SKYPE free. Skype on iPad retains the features that have made the internet-calling service so popular on computers, including voice calls and instant messaging. It's the fullscreen video calls that make the iPad version an essential, though. Perfect for video-calling those friends and family who don’t own an apple device.

GOOGLE EARTH free. Want to explore planet earth? Google's planet-mapping service was born to be on touchscreen tablets, getting you to swipe and pinch-zoom your way around the world. It's an impressive showcase for iPad's computing power, particularly the iPad 2.

FLIPBOARD free. Flipboard wants to be your personalised, digital magazine, and does a great job of serving up articles that your Facebook and Twitter contacts have been linking to, as well as stories from your favourite websites.

AUTO TRADER free. Auto Trader's official iPad app aims to make the grind of scanning used car listings a whole lot more visual, with grids of thumbnail photos of cars with their prices, and simple filters to make sense of them.

We’re living in a world where technology is constantly changing. It can be hard to keep up with to next best thing and that’s where we come in.

The gameplay may now be familiar but it remains addictive. RIGHTMOVE FOR IPAD free. The house-hunting process can be a grind, even on the best websites. Rightmove's iPad app simplifies (but improves) the interface, and like eBay and Amazon it makes a feature of larger photos as you browse.

IMOVIE £2.99. It's available on iPhone too, but Apple's video-editing app is at its best on the iPad's larger screen, where the process of turning your clips into short films with soundtracks is far less fiddly.

123D SCULPT free This is a digital sculpting app: you pinch and rub the screen to mould virtual clay, buying in-app theme packs for 69p each including “Medieval” and “Transportation”. A tactile and creative delight.

PAPERCUT £3.99 Papercut is an innovative attempt to find a new format for books that moves away from the idea of turning pages. You scroll through three short stories, with animation, sound and interactivity triggered as you go.

HOW TO GET YOU’RE DREAM CAREER From those who already have theirs!

You sit and dream of the day your sitting at the top of your game. But what does it really take to get there and is it realistic to have such big dreams? We had a chat with several women who are already there. They’ve worked hard and had up’s and down’s on their journeys to get to the top. We asked each woman to give one piece of advice for anyone wanting success.

H

azel Beevers an account executive at a top PR company says ‘I love my job. It’s exactly what I always imagined myself doing. To get my job you have to be willing to start at the bottom of the chain making teas, sorting the newspapers, and running errands. It’s sometimes tough when you get sent out in the rain to find 20 pairs of flip-flops for a photo-shoot that you don’t even get to attend. But if you want to succeed you need to do it. It will pay off when someone notices your hard work and you are offered a position then you can work your way up. My one piece of advice – Be driven.’

L

auren Glucksman a music manager says ‘the music industry is a tough industry; it can either make or break you. For me I have had many bad moments but the good ones, well they outweigh the bad. For anyone wanting to make it in the industry they need to develop a tough skin. If you want to be a manager you need to prepare for long days and nights. It’s tough when you have a band you believe so much in but are finding it hard to catch them a break. Not only do you need to help them in their professional lives, their personal lives quickly become part of your job. You need to be on call pretty much 24/7. However, I love my job, there is many rewards like when you band gets signed, award shows, events and freebies. My one piece of advice – Stay positive and sleep when you can’

N

ikki Lee a senior editor at top publishers says ‘my job is great. Where else do you get paid to read a book? Obviously it’s a lot more work than that but when you get the manuscript in your hands and it’s a good one, excitement takes over. You may well be reading something that isn’t great but when you begin reading something amazing it could be the next best seller. To get a job as an editor you should have a journalism or English degree and be willing to do work placements for free before landing a job. It can be hard work when it comes to creating the work but it also very rewarding. My one piece of advice – make a good impression’

T

hese women have given you a small glimpse of their road to success and who knows you could be next. There is pattern forming from each, they all say it takes hard work and starting from the bottom to succeed. You will learn a lot if you begin from interning to working up the ladder in your chosen industry. Getting that career you always wanted is gong to take some hard work. That’s what makes it exciting, you set out to achieve something and embark on an adventure. Life is a journey you will come up against things that will get you down but don’t let it break you. If you set out with ambition and show true passion to the people you work for then you will get noticed and soon work your way up to your dream career.

AN INTERVIEW WITH

GINNI ROMETTY

On January 1st 2012, Ginni Rometty became tech giant IBM’s first female CEO and President. Then in October of the same year she became Chairman of the Board of Directors. For the female population this is a big break through and a step in the right direction of female power in the business industries.

G

inni Rometty studied at Northwestern University and came out with high honors in computer science and electrical engineering. She then began her career with IBM in 1981, and since then has held a series of leadership positions within the company. Her most recent positions include Senior Vice President and Group Executive, IBM sales, Marketing and Strategy. All this brings her career with IBM to over 30 years. In 2006 she received the Carl Sloane Award for her work with PricewaterhouseCoopers consulting arm in IBM. Ginni Rometty tells us ‘It has taken me 30+ years to become the first female CEO at the company. It wasn’t an easy ride, I worked hard and never let my fears of failure stand in the way’ She is outstanding at her job and is very ambitious with what she wants to achieve for the company. We caught up with this career driven woman who tells us how she climbed the career ladder and what you can do to be successful in your chosen field.

33 SOGNO DONE!!!!- JENNIFER CAMPBELL FMP newest.indd 34-35

What advice do you have for our readers who are starting out in their careers? Good question. I always advise people to take risks. Don’t be afraid to push for what you believe in and be confident of your own abilities. If you feel the task or position is above you, stop, you need to take the risk and be prepared for what it’s going to throw at you.

How long has it taken you to get to where you are at in your career? Well, 30 years. It’s been a long road but it’s worth it. Anyone who goes into a career expecting to climb to the top by running then they are going to fall with such force they wont know what’s hit them. You need to be willing to start at the bottom of the ladder and take it step by step. That’s what I did, I started small and over the years I got promotions until 30 years later here I am, at the top of my game.

34 12/05/2013 19:23

What's the worst mistake you've made in your career? Well, I've made lots of mistakes. Probably the worst one, I would say they tie. It's either when I didn't move fast enough on something, or I didn't take a big enough risk. And I can think of multiple times -- I mean, the worst mistakes to me, though, is you don't learn from your mistake. There is no greater sin than to not learn from it. And so I would say that has been the worst mistakes. When there have been times, either it's a market or something we were building or creating that I either was slow or that for some reason the way I didn't take enough risk on it. So, that's always sort of in the forefront of my mind. The recommendations when I’m mentoring folks, I always tell them, take a risk. Or the almost mistakes are when I didn't take a big enough risk.

One of the big markets we think out there is around chief marketing officers. As an example, with the future here and what I call cognitive computing, it's about -big data is one thing, you'll never be able to get through it all. It's going to be a whole era that's going to help you get through this. And everybody's job in a front office, chief marketing officer, a mayor, chief if police -- their jobs are going to be redefined by this. These are the kinds of markets we want people testing, try them, and move them. And that would be my biggest recommendation on that.

What advice do you have for our readers who are starting out in their careers?

You say take risks, but it's interesting in a company of your size, how do you know people are taking those risks? And then how do you reward and recognize them for doing so? Yeah. That is a great question because the biggest -here's my biggest piece of advice on that: I think one of the most valuable things anybody can do in reinvention is make markets. And this idea of getting the team to make markets and test them, fail fast, or move on, right? And so you reward people for -- even if it failed, what did you learn? What did you move on? And so that idea, making, fail fast, go forward is I think one of the biggest ways we've been able to advance that.

35

You talk about cognitive computing; can you explain what you mean?

Yes. I think this is critical for everyone. So, in a nutshell, you and I in our lifetimes, this would be the third era of computing. The first is machines that just tabulated and counted. The second is programs, get this, do that -- everything you guys -- everything we use today to get machines to do it faster. The third era is because in this world of huge and big data, you won't be able to program machines -- you'll never be able to program them for everything that they should know, and data will be uncertain out there. These machines will have to learn. They will have to be able to learn what is right, what is wrong, what are the patterns. They learn. That is cognitive, a machine that learns.

Any last thoughts? I would leave this thought with the readers. Whatever you do in life, you should be passionate and enjoy it. Keep your feet grounded but set out to achieve the very best you can.

With those answers from one of the most successful woman in the world you can take her advice and go out there, take risks and succeed.

WORKING FROM HOME: THE DEBATE By Jennifer Campbell

In February this year, Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, banned working from home from Yahoo! Meaning that all staff must pack up and relocate to their nearest office by June. The memo sent out read: ‘To become the

absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo! and that starts with physically being together.’

T

his caused outrage amongst businesses worldwide. However, a male CEO made a similar decision, Hubert Joly CEO of Best Buy, and it caused no fuss. Is there a reason why, if females make such decisions it causes an outrage but if the male counterpart does then nothing happens? Is it really a bad thing to work in your company’s office environment? There is now a worldwide debate on the subject. There are opinions forming both for and against Marissa Mayer’s decision. Google’s CFO, Patrick Pichette spoke about the decision ‘Yes, it could be argued that Yahoo’s decision is a step in the wrong direction towards a more rigid working culture. However, I don’t see working in the office as a restrictive experience but in fact feel quite the opposite.’ Working from home has many pros and cons. It can be useful to the working mother who can continue to work from home whilst attending to her motherly duties. Having the power to work from home can be liberating, you can do so in the comfort of your home office, which could spur on your work. However, it could also do the opposite where you feel too comfortable and end up not getting a lot of work done.

37 SOGNO DONE!!!!- JENNIFER CAMPBELL FMP newest.indd 38-39

Marissa Mayer’s reason for the decision was that it would help increase productivity and a more connected company culture. It seems that her reasoning is a fair assessment as working as part of a team in an office will help creativity to grow and new ideas blossom through meetings and over coffee in the cafeteria. Working in a group often has better results and so the company will benefit. So why has it become such a debate? Should we have the right to choose whether we work from home or do the organisations we work for have the right to say what we do? Surely the organisation, as the employer, has most of the say in how their employees work? Marissa Mayer is only trying to improve the work place and help it grow and become a better place so why is she being criticized? Some women feel that Marissa Mayer is going totally against women and giving them less chance of success if they cannot get the option to work from home. New mothers often use the flexi working to keep their jobs going after a baby arrives. They work from home as it is a convenient way to look after the baby and still get their work done. Many companies are taking a different approach to the working rules for example The O2 have introduced a new flexi working program which encourages staff to work from home since the London Olympics last year

38 12/05/2013 19:23

Increased which has been very successful. absenteeism It depends on the company – companies that and what works best for them, facilitated employees it’s all about trial and error. Yahoo! obviously has sparked to work from home discussions all over the world reduced unscheduled by ruling out the right to work from home. David Cameron absences by 63% (American is even jumping on the bandwagon and proposing a Management new legislation. It allows UK Association 2012) workers the statuary right to

choose whether they work from home or not. This does automatically give them the right to but employers have to take there right and reasons into consideration. NDK Learning employee Ciara says ‘Since the 1970s the technology industry and specifically Silicon Valley has been at the forefront of developing innovative workplace practices. Some of the most popular trends adopted across multiple industries Decreased employee include casual work attire, retention – 54% of 24/7 workspaces and global businesses agreed working remotely. For me, that the memo signals a step flexible working practices back to a more bureaucratic and rigid working culture. are a key talent retention The premise of the memo tool (2010 survey by the was to improve the Society for Human company culture when Resource it could have the opposite effect.’ Ciara is against the idea however her co-worker Jess is for the change and feels it is a good thing. Jess adds, ‘I have to admit that when I first read Marissa Mayer’s memo I immediately jumped to criticise her decision and dismiss her comments as unfair and old fashioned. However, despite being stranded at home myself not too long ago as a result of the bad winter weather and yet still managing to have an incredibly productive day, I can’t help but feel that working away from the office can come at a huge social and learning cost.

It is true that being in the office can hinder the amount of work you get done. In fact, a study by the New York Times found that the average worker works only 3 days a week as a result of meetings Demotivated and other admin tasks. But I employees – find it really inspiring and motivational to come in to 64% of global businesses agreed work every day at NKD. From the cheery ‘good that flexible working morning’ I get every day helped staff feel more from my colleagues to asking my desk neighbor to help me energized and motivated (Regus, with a problem, I love being able to come into a space 2012) where I can be social and learn Reduced from productivity – my peers.

a 2011 Stanford

So whilst advances in University survey found technology may mean that that people people no longer need to who worked from home be chained to their desks were 13% more from nine to five and work productive than people can become more flexible, I would gladly choose the working in an office NKD office over working from home any day. Where’s the fun in sitting at home alone, corresponding with my workmates over email instead of sharing and contributing to ideas as and when they arise? According to The Washington Post, I already spend over a quarter of my day reading, writing and responding to emails – and that’s when I’m actually in the office! I have to say, despite my initial jump to defend working at home, I am with Marissa Mayer on this one…Who else is with me?’ It seems there is always going to be an argument both for and against flexi working. Some staff may take advantage of the flexi working rules that could make it harder for genuine staff that really needs the flexibility. There is going to be divided opinions across the world but in the end the company will do what they feel is best for it’s staff and company.

FILM

Safe Haven

Originally a novel by Nicholas Sparks, this movie stays true to the book and tugs at the heartstrings. Josh Duhamel plays a father of two children who is left to bring up the kids after his wife, Cobie Smulders, passed away. Julianne Hough plays a woman on the run from her ex-husband and somehow ends up building a new life for herself. The story is great and is well executed in the film. This romantic film is perfect when you need a good cry.

Cinema is an expensive experience at times but there’s nothing quite like watching a film for the first time in front of a huge screen. Each month we aim to give you the latest reviews on what to watch and what to avoid.

Oz the great and powerful

Ok so the original movie is an iconic film, everyone has heard of it and the music that goes along with it. However, nothing will beat it. No amount of extravagant sound and visual effects could make this movie even come close to the original. The poorly done black and white to colour like the original and the bad acting were just some of the problems facing this blockbuster. The graphics were too over the top. Mila Kunis is usually commended for her roles, but somehow she just could not pull of the wicked witch of the west. Her voice is not powerful enough and therefore she comes across screeching and it’s painful. This is Oz and the not so great and powerful.

IRON MAN 3

Back for it’s third instalment and what a come back it is. Robert Downy Junior slips back into the infamous suit for a film, which is arguably the best one yet. No wonder it is raking in millions at the box office and is breaking records in the film industry. With Gwyneth Paltrow, who has recently been voted the worlds best looking woman, back at Iron Mans side, the film is inviting and sucks you into the fantasy world. If you like superhero films and the past two films then this is definitely a must see.

Finely slice the potatoes in the processor, then tip into the medium pan and cover with boiling water and the lid • Peel the onions, finely slice in the processor, then tip into the roasting tray with 2 tablespoons of oil, crumble in the stock cube and season with salt and pepper • Tear in the sage leaves and stir regularly, adding a splash of water if they start to catch

For the sides

2 mixed-colour peppers 4 spring onions 8 small wholewheat tortillas 1 tablespoon Lingham's chilli sauce 250g low-fat cottage cheese optional: pickled red cabbage

Method Ingredients out • Food processor (bowl blade) • Large frying pan, medium heat • Griddle pan, high heat

START COOKING
Drain the beans and chickpeas and put them into the processor • Finely grate in the lemon zest, then add For the salsa a pinch of salt and pepper, the harissa, allspice, flour 1 big handful mixed-col- and coriander stalks (reserving the leaves) • Blitz until our ripe tomatoes smooth, scraping down the sides of the processor if ½ –1 fresh red chilli needed • Scrape out the mixture and use clean, wet ½ clove of garlic hands to quickly divide and shape it into 8 patties about 1 lime 1.5cm thick • Put 1 tablespoon of oil into the frying pan and add the falafels, turning when golden and crisp

Rip the seeds and stalks out of the peppers, tear each one into bite-sized chunks and put on the griddle pan with the trimmed and halved spring onions and a pinch of salt and pepper, turning when charred • Put the tomatoes, chilli and half the coriander leaves into the processor • Squash in the unpeeled garlic through a garlic crusher, squeeze in the lime juice, whiz until fine, then season to taste and pour into a serving dish

Pop the tortillas into the microwave (800W) for 45 seconds while you marble the chilli sauce into the cottage cheese • Squeeze the juice of half the zested lemon over the charred veggies, then take with the falafels to the table, scattering everything with the rest of the coriander • Let everyone assemble their own wraps, and serve with pickled red cabbage, if you like

On a large sheet of greaseproof paper, toss the chicken with salt, pepper and the rosemary leaves, then fold the paper over and bash and flatten the chicken to 1.5cm thick with a rolling pin • Put into the frying pan with 1 tablespoon of oil, turning after 3 or 4 minutes, until golden and cooked through • Drain the potatoes well in a colander, then tip into the onion pan, stir together and arrange in a flat layer • Pour over the cream, then finely grate over the Parmesan and pop under the grill on the top shelf

Halve the leeks lengthways, rinse under the tap, then finely slice • Put into the empty lidded pan on a high heat with 1 tablespoon of oil, stirring often • Finely slice the bacon and add to the chicken pan, tossing regularly • Stir the spinach and peas into the leeks and once the spinach has wilted and the peas are tender, pile on a board or platter with the chicken and bacon on top • Serve with the gratin

What we do every day of our lives has an effect on not only ourselves but also the people we surround ourselves with daily. These people could be your friends, family or even a stranger. Words and actions are powerful and we should be careful how we use them. A small act whether in kindness or bitterness can have a ripple effect on the people’s lives we touch. As we go about our day we should consider how we could affect someone else’s. This world is full of good and bad and it may sound cliché but the choices we make matter, we matter, you matter. You have had an impact on many people’s lives so far, and will continue to do so as you go on your journey through life. Someone may be having a tough day but put a smile on their face and go about their business. It only takes one person to make a remark and that can push them over the edge. What we say matters and sometimes we use words forgetting just how powerful they are. You are also able to change someone’s life whether for the good or the bad. A simple gesture or act of kindness can really make someone’s day. Whether what you do is at work, on the street or at home it doesn’t matter because wherever you are you leave a footprint or a handprint and it impacts someone’s life. Have you ever looked at a photograph and noticed the people in the background? Have you ever wondered how many people have you in the background of their photographs and memories? It could be staggering to think that hundreds of photos could be circling around with you there not even knowing it. Think about what you could be doing at the moment captured. Do you want to be remembered for the good or the bad?

‘THOUGHT OF THE MONTH’

Next time you make a nasty remark to a stranger or a friend, remember that words are powerful and your moment may just be captured forever.
