Locals Love! WHAT THE

A Little Bit of Nashville in Jefferson County

You don’t need to go all the way to Tennessee to enjoy live country music and mason-jar cocktails. Local Waters in Watertown is a Nashville-inspired bar, bringing patrons all the comforts of the south through country music, country drinks, and country atmosphere. There’s often live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. Grab your favorite beer, or enjoy a craft-cocktail made with Ole Smoky Moonshine or Whiskey. Represent your favorite new hangout by purchasing some Local Waters merchandise. The pub also has an outdoor patio for those warm weather evenings. Don’t miss Local’s “Blocktoberfest,” held outdoors in October.

Ripley Park: A Beautiful Park with Something for Everyone!

Bring your family and friends to Ripley Park in Cambridge and enjoy a day at the beach. The 18-acre, privately owned park is home to two tennis and pickleball courts, a basketball court, a children’s play structure, a 9-hole disc golf course, volleyball courts, 500-feet of sandy beachfront and much more. The park also has shelters for rent that can accommodate large groups of people for birthdays and other celebrations. You’ll also find a variety of grills available throughout the park and a concession stand that is open daily with a great variety of sweet treats and food options.

Ripley Park, owned by the Cambridge Foundation and managed by the Cambridge Community Activities Program, is open seasonally from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. Admission is only $5 for adults and $2 for children, or get the season pass for $35 which covers the whole carload each time you enter!

Clean up Fido’s Act for a Cause!

Every summer, volunteers at Tyranena Brewing Company wash dirty dogs to help raise money for the Humane Society of Jefferson County. The Lake Mills Veterinary Clinic is also on hand offering nail trims. And if watching someone else convince your pampered pooch that baths are a good thing isn’t enough, you can do it with a beer in your hand courtesy of Tyranena (one free beverage comes with each paid wash). Now that’s doggone good!

Take a Hike at Dorothy Carnes Park

Just outside of Fort Atkinson you’ll find a beautiful, peaceful park with prairies, woods, and wetlands. Wildflowers, butterflies, and birds abound. It’s the perfect getaway to clear your mind, have a picnic, birdwatch, cross country ski, or walk your dog, and it’s close enough to town that you can easily take a walk on your lunch break or after work. With over 500 acres, you can keep coming back and discovering new paths, views, and places to take photos or relax. The park surrounds Rose Lake Marsh and features many significant geological formations and archaeological sites.

Let it Flow!

Whitewater’s natural spring well is located in a picturesque park, on tree-dotted farmland just outside the city. It’s a perfect place for a picnic, some rest and relaxation, or maybe just a cool drink in the summer heat. Hand dug in 1895 by Adam Channing to an original depth of 55 feet, the well has been flowing steadily to this day. The water in Artesian wells flow from underground aquifers where water is filtered through a natural process involving pressure and miles of sand. This well is located along the Clover Valley segment of the Ice Age Trail and is a favorite destination for hikers, bikers, and locals alike. The water coming from this underground spring is fresh, clean, and unprocessed – a true gift from nature. It will become your favorite water around and a must do when visiting Whitewater.

Hit the Rock River!

With the Rock River flowing through Downtown Jefferson, there are lots of outdoor activities to experience our community! Drop in your kayak, canoe, or paddle board at River Front Park, Rotary Park, or another area boat launch and explore the area by paddle. After a day out on the water, catch a concert or relax at Rotary Park. Need to refuel your energy? Stop by one of the area restaurants for a bite to eat and a drink.

Hop back on the river and ,at the intersection of the Rock and Crawfish Rivers just below the dam, find Goat Island! This island is the summer home to a herd of goats. Since 2017, the Friends of Goat Island have placed 3-5 goats there from June through September to eradicate invasive plant species. The goats love when visitors stop by for company, photos, or to feed them from the available vending machine. You can stop by the island at any point while the goats are there, but if you really want the full goat experience, join us for Goat Fest on August 5th!

Read and Walk

Why read inside? Enjoy the beauty of nature and read a fun book with your family as you walk along a story trail! On story trails, pages of a picture book are mounted on weather-proof signs and spaced along an easy walking trail. There are five story paths sponsored and maintained by local libraries in Jefferson County; some meander through wooded areas while others are close to playgrounds so the kids can play after they’ve finished the book. You can find local story trails at Cambridge Community Library, Ralph Park in Fort Atkinson, the Meadow Springs Conservancy in Jefferson, Wallace Park in Lake Mills, and Brandt Quirk Park in Watertown. Happy reading!

Rural Side

Jefferson County’s rich agricultural history is vibrantly seen throughout the County through such well-known brands as Jones Dairy Farm & Jones Market (Fort Atkinson), Pickle-In-A-Pouch (Waterloo), Kraemer Wisconsin Cheese, (Watertown), and Crystal Farms (Lake Mills). All organizations have rich histories and connections to their communities, that sustain their reputations as industry leaders as well as major employers.

Jefferson County is also made up of local farms that help sustain some of the area’s premier farm-to-table experiences, including, Sprouting Acres and Cambridge Market Cafe in Cambridge, Brickhaus Café and Edgewater Supper Club in Jefferson. Don’t miss the unique dinner events at Milford Hills in Johnson Creek, where the chefs go out of their way to offer one-of-a-kind wild game menu options you won’t find anywhere else.

One of the ways Jefferson County showcases their proud agricultural heritage is by providing a multi-purpose event facility. The Jefferson County Fair Park is home to a variety of animal events each year including livestock shows, equestrian shows, the Jefferson County Fair and the Jefferson County Dairy Breakfast.

Fun on the Farm

Guests come to the farm to hand milk a cow and observe the herd of 230 cows being milked using the latest technology in dairy farming… robots! Enjoy a wagon ride in the fields and stroll through the barnyard to pet, hold, and feed farm animals. Group and school rates available.

A fun, safe atmosphere for kids and adults alike to learn and experience the joy of animals, by feeding, petting and holding some furry and feathered friends. Explore a corn maze, a pumpkin patch, a sunflower field, obstacle courses, 3-story elevator slides, and more!

Glacier Rock Farms teach children about life on the farm. Be it a day trip with the family or a bus trip with students and facility, they offer a beautiful setting to enjoy their petting zoo. Experience the farm and animals weekdays for schools and Sundays for the public.

Farms and Farmers Markets

Most of our communities offer markets where local farmers and artisans assemble to sell their fresh produce, plants, honey, baked goods and much more. Whether it’s a taste of the town or a unique piece of art, do indulge in what we have to offer. Check out times of operation on the next page and on our website at enjoyjeffersoncounty.com

Sometimes the best way to get to know farm life, is to check in with a farm family. Dettmann Dairy Farm in Johnson Creek has a large Facebook following and shares what it’s like living and working on a dairy farm. They were also a featured farm in the awardwinning exhibition, The Lands We Share, which showcases Wisconsin farm life and history and was curated by UW-Whitewater, UWMilwaukee, UW-Oshkosh, and UW-Madison.

Many local farms offer tours, such as Hoard’s Dairyman Farm in Fort Atkinson (which is the birthplace of the national Hoard’s Dairyman Magazine), Busy Barns Adventure Farm in Fort Atkinson, Hinchley’s Dairy Farm in Cambridge and Jelli’s Market in Helenville, where you can pick your own strawberries!

Landscaping Connections and Events

Ebert’s Greenhouse in Ixonia has packed greenhouses and offers tips and ideas on how to care for all your gardens year-round! They even have an amazing winter wonderland during the holidays.

Some of the County’s most creative landscapers can be found on Goat Island in Jefferson (located below the Rock River Dam). Several goats are seasonally brought to the downtown Jefferson island to help keep the grasses and weeds from overgrowing. They have become such a sought-after attraction for Jefferson, that they have developed an annual Goat Fest event in early August.

You’ll find over 70 exhibits at the annual Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival, in September at the Fair Park, including fiber arts classes, sheep shows, shearing demos, the Crook and Whistle Stock Dog Trial, newborn lambs, fleece shows, and sales. Plus educational clinics and workshops for shepherds of any age and experience. wisconsinsheepandwoolfestival.com

We hope you’ll find the many agritourism and agritainment options in Jefferson County worthwhile and tasty! We can’t wait to see you! Be sure to visit enjoyjeffersoncounty.com for the most up-to-date schedules on all events.

Jefferson County is home to a network of parks, wildlife and natural areas, historic and cultural sites, waterways and preserves all connected by trails throughout the County. Our County Parks system has over 19 miles of hiking trails, 35 miles of off- and on-road bicycle/pedestrian trails along the Glacial River Trail and Interurban Trail, and 224 miles of snowmobile trails. Bicycle routes have been designated on lightly traveled roads. A variety of outdoor activities from hiking, picnicking, bicycle riding, rustic camping, a large dog park, mountain biking, historic sites, Frisbee golf, boating, fishing, enjoying nature, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and snowmobiling draws park users from throughout the County and beyond.

THE INTERURBAN RECREATION TRAIL

The off-road 10.9 mile Interurban Recreation Trail travels east/west through Jefferson County’s natural areas, connecting the communities of Watertown, Ixonia, and Oconomowoc. The trail offers numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation activities to include walking, bicycle riding, in-line skating, bird watching, site seeing, and simply relaxing in the midst of nature. While the final segment of the trail is still under design and construction, 7-miles of the trail is currently open from Watertown to County Highway F.

GLACIAL DRUMLIN STATE TRAIL

Developed in 1986, the trail starts in Cottage Grove (just east of Madison) and heads East for 52 miles where it connects with other trails in the Fox River Sanctuary in Waukesha. The trail is open to cyclists, walkers, joggers, roller bladers (Waukesha County), and snowmobilers. A pass is required before using the trail and is valid on all other state trails. Annual fee: $25; daily fee: $5. No pass is required for hikers or children under 16. glacialdrumlin.com

GLACIAL RIVER BIKE TRAIL

This 31.5-mile trail extends the full length (North to South) of Jefferson County, seamlessly into Rock and Dodge Counties, and is connected by an on-road portion of the Wild Goose Trail in Dodge County. A portion of the Glacial River Trail from downtown Fort Atkinson to the Jefferson/ Rock County line is set on a former rail bed and features a covered bridge. The majority provides an asphalt paved, separated grade trail. It is a mix of trail and on-road connections from Fort Atkinson. This spectacular attraction features an archway, bronze sculptures, rest areas and fountains - making it a relaxing and scenic adventure.

Watertrails

Paddling and water sports continue to be one of the most popular activities in the State of Wisconsin, and Jefferson County provides plenty of opportunity. With seven rivers and nine lakes to choose from, including a section of the 320-mile Rock River National Water Trail, adventurers can paddle and boat the waterways of the County while accessing the various shops, restaurants, and events along its river banks. The best way to plan a paddling trip would be to check out the Glacial Heritage Area Watertrail map. With 70 designated put-in and take-out sites to choose from, and trip descriptions for each one, planning a trip is a breeze. Check them out at jeffersoncountywi.gov/parks

Emma Carlin Trail

The trail is comprised of three loops, with difficult sections covering nearly 40 miles of mountain biking. The west end of the Green Loop has a particularly tough uphill grind. For a total challenge, take the formidable Connector Trail south to the John Muir Trail in Palmyra.

Camrock Park

Located between Rockdale and Cambridge along the Koshkonong Creek, this 422-acre park has three areas with shelter facilities and play areas. The park has over 100 miles of hiking trails, cross-country skiing, and over 9 miles of some of the best mountain biking in the area. The park can be reached via several access points with connector trails to all parks, access points located trailhead adjacent to Westside Park on Water Street in downtown Cambridge, County Hwy B, and Highland Drive in the Village of Rockdale.
