F Time has been kind to Union Grove

irst, it brought in the kind of settler who stayed and put down roots, rather than the kind who grabbed up land for speculation, and then raced off with his profits to newer settlements. Starting in the early 1840s, former New Englanders came here, naming the settlement, “Union Grove” for the large grove of burr oak trees which covered the countryside, and for the one-room Union School, located at what is now the intersection of Highway 45 and 11. Tradesmen were attracted to the tiny settlement along the old Indian trail leading to Lake Michigan because it was about one day out, by loaded grain wagon, from the Port of Racine. The heavily laden wagons moved slowly over the rutted trails. There were frequent broken axles. Erastmus Cadwell set up his blacksmith shop on what is now Old Settlers Park on the west edge of Union Grove. William Reid had a small general store nearby from which he sold supplies to travelers and to neighboring farmers. A Mr. Beer constructed an inn of homemade brick on the north side of the Indian trail. The log building housing the Union School was erected in 1846. It served as a school, church and community hall until 1850 when members of the Congregational Church erected their first house of worship on what is now Martin’s used car lot at the corner of Highway 11 and Vine Street. By 1850, all the essentials of community life were located along the Burlington-Racine trail, including homes, church, school, inn,

store and smithy. All aboard Around 1853, agents from the Racine, Janesville and Mississippi Railroad Company started buying up right-of-way land north of the grove of burr oak trees. Land prices in the area jumped from $6 to $45 per acre. Dr. Ammon P. Adams, Union Grove’s first physician, and eleven other area settlers incorporated the Union Grove Land Company. They proceeded at once to lay out a village, with the railroad tracks running through the middle of their land. They persuaded the railroad company to build a station on the south side of the tracks and the Land Company erected a hotel north of the tracks. The first train arrived in Union Grove on Thursday, June 19, 1856. First lot sold William Reid purchased the first lot from the Land Company, just south of the railroad station. During the winter of 1855, Reid moved his log cabin, which housed his general store, from its Old Settlers Park location to his new lot. The move was made by placing skids under the cabin and pulling it with oxen over the frozen ground. Reid promptly re-opened his store and began selling provisions to the railroad workers as well as to area farmers. Through the years, time has moved slowly and easily here in Union Grove. The village never became a flashy kind of place – that’s been all to Union Grove’s good,

giving it stability, character and a legacy of lovely homes and legends of neighborly generosity and helpfulness. Today, Union Grove is on the threshold of what is expected to be a bright and rewarding future. Union Grove is growing. It expects continued, steady growth as it becomes interwoven to a greater degree in the growing urban complex blanketing southeastern Wisconsin. However, Union Grove seems to have its own way with time – and that’s partly what makes it tick! Source: American Legion Auxiliary’s Community History files.

Fourth of July PARADE

T

he Fourth of July is a very patriotic day in Union Grove. A parade has been sponsored for more than 20 years by the Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce and Bixby-Hansen American Legion Post 171, with the cooperation of the Village of Union Grove. Many veterans’ organizations march or ride in the parade, including several buses carrying residents of the nearby Wisconsin Veterans Home. Children sitting on the curb receive a small American flag to wave during the parade. The committee chooses a different theme each year, but a patriotic theme is also encouraged, and the floats are judged for ribbons and cash prizes. Stilt walkers dressed as Uncle Sam and the Statue of Liberty are a big hit. The parade starts at 9:15 a.m. at the Racine County Fairgrounds on Highway 11 and travels to the parking lot of Union Grove Union High School on Highway 45. In addition, children decorate their trikes, bikes, scooters, or wagons and participate in a Kiddie Parade, which travels for two blocks on Main Street ahead of the main parade. After the parade, many families gather for a picnic and a relaxing holiday.

Have a Super

SATURDAY! Super Saturday is an opportunity for businesses, local service organizations and community members to connect with a day filled with fun and activities centered in Union Grove. Super Saturday takes place on the first Saturday in September, and is held in downtown Union Grove – in and around Village Square. Local businesses hold sidewalk sales and local vendors are encouraged to participate. Super Saturday is an all-day event (10 a.m. to midnight) with a wide variety of things to do, see and eat throughout the day. Super Saturday will also feature four main attractions.

BattlefieldLIVE Wisconsin – Laser Tag Presented by: Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce Start Super Saturday off right! Grab a handful of friends and get ready to battle on the streets of Union Grove! Of course it’s all for fun. The Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce is proud and excited to offer the latest event addition to Super Saturday – Laser Tag! BattlefieldLIVE is the perfect adrenaline rush without the pain, the mess, or the fear of injury from flying projectiles. Unlike indoor laser tag these guns are infrared, like a TV remote control, and are completely eye-safe. Since there are no projectiles there’s no bruising, which means there’s no need for a mask to impair your vision or cumbersome safety gear. BattlefieldLIVE is old fashion fun with a modern, 21st Century high-tech twist.

Union Grove’s Got Talent – Talent Competition Presented by: Union Grove Piggly Wiggly Union Grove’s Got Talent, presented by Union Grove Piggly Wiggly, begins at Village Square Park in Union Grove. There is no age requirement or entry fee, and individuals and groups are all invited to participate. The stage and sound system will be provided for all of the contestants. Entry spaces for the event are first come, first serve! Please register early.

5K – Superhero Family Fun Run/Walk Presented by: Community State Bank Superheroes unite! Grab your running/ walking shoes, cape, mask and wrist guards and join in the annual Super Saturday 5K Superhero Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by Community State Bank. On Saturday afternoon, ordinary citizens and superheroes will join forces to run and walk side by side down the historic streets of Union Grove. You don’t need to be as fast as the Flash! This untimed event is less about your 10-minute mile and more about having fun with your family and friends – and releasing your inner hero!

Fall Harvest Days

Fall Harvest Days are hosted by the Southeastern Wisconsin Antique Power and Collectables Society. The club hosts a working farm equipment show every September at the Racine County Fairgrounds in Union Grove. In 2014, the club is featuring Allis Chalmers Agriculture and in 2015 they are featuring the Regional Garden Tractors Collection during this event. The event attracts vendors and visitors from around the Midwest and around the world with varied interests, including tractors and farm equipment, farm toys, crafts, cars and trucks, etc. Admission to the fall show is $5. Attendance is more than 4,500 people for teh show, which now fills the entire fairgrounds plus the adjacent Old Settlers Park. Exhibitors and vendors provide activities for the entire family, including an antique tractor pulll. The annual tractor raffle has become a major highlight for all who attend. In 2016 the club will cohost the 27th annual Red Power Round Up from June 16-18, also at the fairgrounds. For more information, visit www.fallharvestdays.com or contact Randy at (262) 878-0486.

If you only go to one event in Union Grove this year, it should be The Great Pumpkin Fest! For nearly two decades, The Great Pumpkin Fest held on the last Saturday in October, has been a Union Grove Halloween tradition. Whether newborn or 90, there is something for everyone to enjoy. What really makes this event “Great” is each year this event has grown to include new contests and activities. The biggest and most recent addition to Pumpkin Fest and perhaps the greatest is the Pumpkin Chuckin competition. That’s right, as seen on TV, teams build and enter either a trebuchet, catapult, or sling shot to win a cash prize and bragging rights as the Greatest Chuckers at the Fest! The costume parade is a favorite each year with awards for the best costume in several different age brackets (including adults)! Enter your jack-o-lantern, your favorite chili, or your best pumpkin dessert recipe to see who will be judged the best at the fest. Our four-legged friends also have a place at The Great Pumpkin Fest when photos of them in costume are entered into competition, as well. Don’t forget to bring your appetite, there is plenty of food or pick up some goodies to take home. The event offers activities galore, such as coloring contests, games like pumpkin bowling and corn hole, pie eating contests and hours of amusement. There is always a live entertainment act, as well. For more information visit the Chamber website at www.uniongrovechamber.org or call (262) 878-4606. Hope to see you there!

RACINE COUNTY FAIR T

12

he Racine County Fair brings urban and rural together for five days during summer in an environment that is both fun and educational. The Racine County Fair started in 1922 and there has been a fair every year since. 2014 and 2015 will be the fair’s 92nd and 93rd years respectively. Since 2007 the fair has grown in attendance from about 45,000 visitors to just under 90,000. In 2013 the attendance was 86,900! The fair enjoys about 1,000 youth exhibitors, 500 open class and senior exhibitors, with over 1,500 animals shown at the fair. Photography is the largest exhibit in both youth and open class. Exhibitors enter everything from quilting to home furnishings, foods, antiques, culinary contests, a chocolate dessert contest and even a pie contest and auction. The fair also has more than 150 vendors that participate each year. It has everything from food to ATV’s, snowplows, and an Antique Tractor display. Let’s not forget all the entertainment the fair has to offer. There is the Runzheimer International Stage, which has continuous free entertainment all five days of the fair. We also have five small acts throughout the grounds and the ever-popular petting pen. In addition to these are the Grandstand acts, which include Truck and Tractor Pulls, Combine Demo Derby, Lawn Mower Racing, Garden Tractor Pulls, music acts and the crowd favorite Demo Derby! With the exception of the music acts in the Grandstand on Thursday and Saturday, entertainment is free. There really is something for everyone at the Racine County Fair! In addition to the judging that occurs everyday of the fair, on Wednesday we have the crowning of the Little King and Queen, and the Fairest of the Fair. The semi finals of the Fair Idol competition also take place on Wednesday. Thursday is the popular Children’s Day, which has free activities for children, a kiddie tractor pull and new for 2013 was a Children’s Cream Puff eating contest. Friday has the Fair Idol finals and Saturday is the large animal auction. Sunday features the Fur and Feather auction, cake decorating for 4 and 5 year olds and the chain saw carving auction. Over the past 10 years the fair has been able to make some great improvements to the grounds. The grandstand can accommodate 6,000 visitors and there is not a bad seat in the house! The Fair has also added new exhibit buildings in the following areas: youth, commercial, rabbit, poultry and even added a maintenance building. If you have not been to the fair – make plans to join us, you will be glad you did! greater union grove area chamber of commerce

CHRISTMAS Comes to Union Grove Christmas is a magical time of year and Union Grove kicks off the season right with two days of family fun and hometown traditions. Our annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Village Square is held on the Thursday after Thanksgiving from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Come and enjoy carolers, hot chocolate and cookies until the lighting of the tree, which signals the arrival of Santa Claus. He and his happy elf arrive on a bright red fire engine, with flashing lights and sirens down Main Street. Christmas stockings are handed out to all children younger than 11, compliments of the Union Grove Lions Club. While waiting for your turn to see Santa, visitors will enjoy Christmas music, which starts that night and is played throughout the Christmas Season. Adults can enter a drawing to win prizes donated from local businesses. Don’t forget to stop by the nostalgic Kiwanis Christmas Tree stand, kitty corner from the park. Feel free to warm your hands by the fire and maybe go home with a fresh cut Christmas tree. The Kiwanis tree sale is open for two weekends and the night of the tree lighting. The fun continues on the first Saturday in December, beginning with Breakfast with Santa. During this limited seating event, children young and old enjoy a delicious breakfast served by some of Santa’s best elves. Before and after breakfast children can spend some time creating crafts in the workshop or getting their picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Don’t wait to get your tickets for this event because there are none available at the door. Contact the Chamber for ticket sale dates. Join in the fun and go on a Cookie Walk to the area businesses where you will get a unique cookie to put in that year’s tin. Don’t forget to check out the many great deals being offered throughout town during the Cookie Walk. In addition, you will have the opportunity to sign up for a chance to win a Chamber gift certificate good at all member businesses! During your walk don’t forget to stop by the Union Grove Model Railroad’s open house at 1010 Vine Street. Lastly more than 100 vendors are waiting for you at the Holiday Gift and Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Union Grove Elementary School. For more information about any of these events check out the events calendar on our website at www.uniongrovechamber.org.

UNION GROVE FARMERS’ MARKET Since its beginning in the fall of 2011, the Union Grove Farmers Market has been “growing” (pun intended). The season runs from early June to midOctober. The Farmers Market is open every Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine, cold or hot. The location is the Village Square on Highway 45 at 10th Avenue and Main Street. Our vendors have offered all kinds of garden produce in season; plus honey, apples and cider, blueberries, cherries and

blackberries, seasoned chips and salsa, spice blends and cooking mixes, homemade chocolate candies, kettle corn popped on site, birdhouses and other country crafts. A weekly Bake Sale is a tasty new addition to the market, and is a fundraising opportunity for area non-profit organizations. Whenever possible, singers and musicians will showcase their talent at 4 p.m. at this local venue. The public is invited to bring a lawn chair to sit and enjoy

a relaxing hour in the park before or after shopping at the Farmers Market. The Union Grove Farmers Market is a joint project of the Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Union Grove Community Development Authority (CDA). Please visit www.uniongrovechamber.org or www.uniongrove.net to access the vendor application and bake sale registration, or to request a date on the entertainment schedule.

‘Back to the Past’ car show The “Back to the Past” car show is an event that engulfs the entire Village of Union Grove. Attracting people from all over southeastern Wisconsin, it showcases the newly renovated streets, sidewalks and businesses while providing a day of fun for the entire family. At this annual event, the second Saturday of August, Main Street comes to life with the sounds of 50s and 60s music, the roar and rumble of Hot Rods, muscle cars, motorcycles, trucks and tractors. Dash Plaques are given to the first 200 entries. Brought to you by Maximum Security Systems and the Village of Union Grove. Southern Wisconsin Center Campus N

earby in the Town of Dover, veterans have found a great place to call home with the establishment in 2002 of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove on the Southern Center Campus. The original buildings on the campus were built for Southern Wisconsin Center for the Developmentally Disabled (current name) in 1919. At its peak in 1959 SWC was home for 1,595 people. As of January 2008, SWC cared for 206 people from 18 counties. The Center provides a wide

variety of programs and services designed to assist and prepare individuals to live successfully in the setting that best meets their needs. Fairchild Hall and Shemanske Hall were the first two SWC buildings converted for the Wisconsin Veterans Home. It was followed by the construction of Gates Hall for assisted living; Boland Hall, 120-bed skilled nursing facility; and Maurer Hall, activity center. Also on the campus is a VA Clinic to provide outpatient medical care services, including pharmacy support. A Veteran’s

Assistance Program helps homeless vets with vocational training, education and life skills in a structured living environment. The adjacent Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery was dedicated in 1998. It encompasses 35 acres of scenic countryside and has another 70 acres for expansion. The Department of Corrections opened the Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center on the campus in 1989. The minimum and medium security institution readies women inmates for a return to the community.

Town of Yorkville The Town of Yorkville is a rural area of homes, farmland and businesses with a population of more than 3,300 residents located in the south central part of Racine County. The town has 52 miles of roads that are cleared and maintained by Racine County Public Works Department. The post offices of Union Grove 53182, Sturtevant 53177, and Franksville 53126 serve the area. The town is the home of the Racine County Fair held in July. The Modine-Benstead Observatory on the corner of Highway A and 63rd Drive has public night open houses. The Ives Grove Golf Links just west of Interstate 94 on Highway 20 is a 27-hole link-style course. Learn more about these attractions by visiting www.townofyorkville.com and clicking on the link provided under that menu choice. Yorkville’s history The Town of Yorkville was organized by the Wisconsin State Legislature on Feb. 7, 1842, and included what are now parts of the Towns of Raymond, Norway and Dover. In 1846, the Town of Yorkville was incorporated with 36 sections with borders of Two Mile Road, Interstate 94, County Line Road and Raynor Avenue. By 1893, the area known as Union Grove filed for incorporation and left the township.

Town of Paris

Paris is located in Kenosha County, south of Union Grove. There has been a long tradition of trade, commerce and social interaction between the two communities. In the early days most of the businesses were located in Paris Corners, (Highway 45 and Highway 142). The Town of Paris is also well known for two items of historical interest; the Town Hall lights the Civil War Monument every night. Dedicated in 1866, it was the first Civil War monument erected in the State of Wisconsin. The Schaefer Mammoth, on display at the Kenosha Public Museum, was excavated from the Schaefer Farm in the Town of Paris in 1993-94. Present day businesses are scattered throughout the Town of Paris which borders Interstate 94. Mars Cheese Castle and Bobby Nelson’s Cheese Market attract many visitors. Cars have been racing at Great Lakes Dragaway, located on Highway KR, since 1955. Kenosha Beef International celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2011. Pheasant Run, operated by Waste Management, is the largest landfill in the area.

The Village of Union Grove welcomes you to our community. Union Grove is ideally located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 45 and Wisconsin Highway 11, only five miles west of Interstate 94. Putting it plainly, the Village of Union Grove is a great place to live. Our schools are top-notch, our people are friendly and we always have something interesting going on in the community. Our summers feature incredible car shows, the street dance, a wonderful Fourth of July Parade and we’re the proud host of the Racine County Fair. Check out our Farmers Market in the Village Square or join one of our recreational leagues. No matter where you are in town, you’re within minutes of a grocery store, pharmacy, church of your choice and several establishments serving up great food. Residents enjoy the safety and friendliness of small-town living, with easy access to major-league sports and entertainment in the nearby cities of Milwaukee and Chicago. Many families move here because of the quality of the schools. We invite you to browse our site (www.uniongrove.net) and learn more about Union Grove – a growing community with small town charm. WINTER Recreation The Grove SnoHawk Snowmobile Club is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to supporting and promoting the sport of snowmobiling in Racine County for nearly 40 years. Along with the annual installation and maintenance of approximately 50 miles of some of the best riding trails in southeastern Wisconsin, the SnoHawks take pride in giving back to their community. For nearly as long as the club has been in existence, they’ve provided safety education to more than 1,600 snowmobilers through a Department of Natural Resources certified snowmobile safety course held annually in late November. Along with the many opportunities to volunteer on the club’s trail committee, there are several social events sponsored by the SnoHawks. Whether it’s the Spring Fling fundraiser, the annual “club trip” up north, or the impromptu ride on SnoHawk trails, there are ample possibilities to connect with others who love the sport of snowmobiling by being a member of the club. For more information on joining the Grove SnoHawk Snowmobile club, or to register for the DNR safety course, contact Dan Schauer at dschauer2@wi.rr.com.

The Modine Benstead Observatory includes two domed observatories as part of the facility, which house a 16-inch and a 14-inch telescope. Public night open house events are held monthly from April through October and there is no charge for admission or parking. They have the observatory telescopes open and many of the club’s members will have their telescopes available to view through. RELAY T

for Life

he American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life has been described as a “huge compassionate support group” – a place where friends, family and loved ones join to celebrate and to honor those who have lost the battle. Relay For Life involves teams of up to 15 people who take turns walking or running around a track/path over a 14-hour period. A party-like atmosphere prevails as team members enjoy music, food, a silent auction, entertainment and other fun activities while building camaraderie with fellow teammates and participants. Money is raised through team and individual fundraising, Relay For Life of Union Grove is typically held on the last Friday in May, where hundreds of team members walk the grounds at the Racine County Fairgrounds, celebrating and remembering. In the 17 years that Union Grove has participated in Relay For Life, our community has raised more than $725,000 towards the fight against cancer. But Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser. It’s a lifechanging experience. Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Please help us FINISH THE FIGHT! For information, call Nancy Suhr at (262) 939-2990, or visit the Relay For Life of Union Grove website at www.relayforlife.org/ uniongrove.wi.
